Neighbourhood wine bar tucked in the heart of south granville - I love everything about the aesthetic of this restaurant. I used to live in the area and have been a few times. Recently I went for brunch with my family for Father's Day and we had a great time. We all ordered different brunches. My brother and dad got the French omelettes, my mom the quiche Lorraine, my sister the carbonara and myself the mushroom egg tart. We all really enjoyed our dishes. Mine was light, fluffy, flakey and bright with a perfectly cooked soft poached egg. It's a clean feeling breakfast. My sister's carbonara was a proper carbonara (made with egg yolks) it was really savoury and a touch too salty for me but I enjoyed a taste of it. We also ordered the basque cheesecake. I've noticed more and more basque cheesecakes on menus but very rarely do restos do it right. I was looking for a gooy-er lighter but full cheese flavoured basque and unfortunately this just doesn't hit the mark - it's a bit dense and lacks that rich cheese flavour. It was a miss but everything else was great including the service. We had many attentive waitresses from the bar staff to the floor staff and had some great convos with them. This is a staple for the neighborhood and I wish we had more places like this! read more

I live nearby so I have always wanted to love this bistro but it usually falls short. The food can be excellent or mid, depending on the day but the wait staff is always consistently rotten. They never listen, seem annoyed you're there, get orders wrong, bring cold food, ignore you, talk amongst themselves (usually about guests in French, oblivious to the fact that I'm fluent.) I have been made to feel so unwanted and uncomfortable at least a half dozen times. I was a server off and on for over twenty years in some of the best French restaurants in Toronto. It's a shame I never get the service I gave back in return. In my experience, you can forgive and remedy a bad meal but consistent bad service? Guests wont come back, including this one. read more

I absolutely hate rating a place badly. This place is farm to table, which I absolutely love. The food was mostly tasteless. We started with the artichoke dip, the truffle popcorn and the bread. The bread was just ok, the other two weren't great. For mains, the chicken Caesar was tasteless and the salmon was disappointing. My prawn spaghetti was pretty good. I didn't love that the prawns were chopped up, but I get it. Seems like more, and prices are sky high. Desserts were pretty good. The bartender started us off, and then the server started and took over. She was better. We heard her tell the special to the table that arrived after us, which we were never told. No biggie. We came to try out the restaurant for dinner for my husband's birthday. We LOVE the restaurant ... the setting, the ambience, the service and especially the food. We sat outside on the street patio with half a dozen other small parties under 2 big fir trees with string lights outside the restaurant on the ground floor of a small apartment building as the backdrop. We shared 4 dishes (carrots with white bean hummus, seared mackerel, seated halibut cheeks and strip loin) and they were all wonderfully delicious. Our refreshing coconut panna cotta perfectly rounded out our meal. We had a very lovely evening. read more

This is such a cute place! I had never heard of it but was getting my hair cut up the street and wanted to find a place near by for a drink and some food after! So glad we came here. They have a massive patio. We chose to sit inside the restaurant so we could get a feel for it and have a bit more of an intimate date. Which was awesome because almost every other person sat on the patio, it was like we had the restaurant to ourselves. We sat in this cute two person booth across from the bar and we loved the seat and being able to see everything. I ordered a custom cocktail. This is the only gripe I have, they don't have a cocktail menu. They have a feature cocktail daily (which was 14 dollars) and then they have a note that says we can make anything just ask. I asked for gin and elderflower, anything. Maybe that was my mistake. The drink was delicious a gin elderflower sour! Loved it! However when we got the bill it was 19 dollars! So a bit of sticker shock there, I would never order a cocktail that expensive usually. We also ordered a few beers, a charcuterie plate, the marinated olives and the blue cheese soufflé. All delicious, cute, well plated. Will absolutely come back to try more. The scotch egg especially is calling my name. The waitress we had was super nice and attentive without being over bearing. Really a 5 star experience just took one off for lack of cocktail menu. It would be perfect if they had even a curated selection of 4-5 to choose from with prices. read more

Returned with a friend visiting from out of town and had another great experience. This time we started with some charcuterie (stilton, manchego, chorizo iberico) which was beautifully presented with pickled veggies, honey, mustard, dried fruit/nuts/seeds. We tried the grilled mackerel (a favorite), halibut cheeks (consistently good), asparagus with cured egg yolk, and gnocchi (yum). I came here for brunch a while ago as I had noticed this place while wandering on Granville some time ago. This is a very cute restaurant tucked away just off of South Granville. Interior and service were good and it is is a smaller more intimate restaurant. The food was very tasty - however, the portions were so small, especially for the price. I've been here before for brunch and this time I visited for a weekday lunch. They have a large patio on the road, as it is closed to traffic. They also still have a couple of tables on the outside on their usual patio for seating. Their menu is small, but uses quality ingredients. My friend and I shared a charcuterie and cheese board. There are different options for it to choose from with different sizes of boards. We went with the largest board, with 5 choices from the cheeses and meats. We went for the salted cod, salami, smoked speck, pleine lune, and iberico. They were served with some fruit, pickled vegetables, nuts and seeds, bread, and a chili jam. It was delicious. I loved the variety and it was the perfect item to share for a light lunch with a glass of wine. Service was very good. They were friendly and attentive. I've had this place bookmarked on my list of brunches to try, and last weekend, I finally made my way there. I liked how they had the option to reserve on OpenTable beforehand. There is some free neighbourhood parking available on this street and others near by. The decor is nice inside, very roomy. I think the table for 3-4 at the front would be a neat place to sit. At night, I can imagine it to be pretty romantic. Service is on the slower side despite the restaurant not being busy, and food was slightly slower than I'm used to for this type of food, but that was fine as it just gave us more time to enjoy the meal. Now on to the food! I had the Croque Madame with side salad ($16). It was a bit disappointing to hear that they no longer do the half salad and half potato latke as I saw in older pictures on Yelp. The option for a side of potatoes is $4. However, the salad was quite tasty and the portion was pretty perfect. I wasn't overly full, just satisfied. The bread was crunchy and there was a thick layer of bechamel sauce. The egg was a perfect topping to the dish. I also got to try the reuben tartine ($14). This dish came to about the same size as mine, but it was not as heavy. There was slightly too much mustard, though, which overwhelmed the dish. Honestly, I probably wouldn't go back here for brunch after this experience. It was totally okay but nothing special that would prompt me to come back. Cozy side street businesses are what make neighbourhoods IMO and this area has been decimated for culture and that sort of thing over the last decades. This is a great spot and the food was good, a bit pricey, but the quality and care matches that price.. I'm not a huge wine drinker but if you are, I think you'd love it. Here for girls brunch last weekend. You can make reservations but there really is no need to. I always though this was just a coffee shop when I walked by in the past because all you see from the outside is a small patio and the coffee section. But once you walk in, they have a nice small dining area. Here's a tip.. they only have an espresso machine so you can't order just a plain drip coffee. Fancy! Food: I ordered the shashuka which is a favourite brunch item of mine. They served it with 64 degree egg which I've never had the pleasure of trying until then. The tomato stew was delicious. Lots of flavour. The egg white was a bit running for me so I swirled it into my stew to cook a tiny more and it was great. My friends ordered the daily special of baked salted cod and it was yummy. Nice and creamy. Another ordered the eggs benny and she said it was good. A flatbread was ordered and I was disappointed with it. My friend gave me a slice to try and I couldn't cut thru it! Very overpriced average food. We had a set menu for a group of 8. The waitress asked if we had any food allergies and she would decide what to serve. We ended up with 20 or so tapas size plates of food that were not enough to go around. Hummus, green salad, chicken liver pate that any one can find at the local grocery store. Stepped in on their opening day as a website was mentioning this place. Took a friend with me to check out the digs and after circling the block for over 20 minutes I was able to find a parking spot and finally was able to get into this place. It's in an area of the Granville Street stretch that is busy, located less than half a block in on the West side of the street, the place from the outside has a very 'cool' 'hip' look, a nice place for a first date maybe, it's a casual place with a good look of class, something different to. We came in and were greeted right away and sat at a two seater booth pretty close to the bar, and the semi-open kitchen. We were presented two menu's, one would be the food they serve here, the other, the drink menu, also on the back wall was a big black chalkboard showing their wine's seperated from white to red, two bubbles, and on the bottom, some charcuterie and cheeses. We started out from the top of the menu ordering the lemon pepper cashews. When they came out, it was on a beautiful wooden board, looking like it was spilled from a glass jar. Talk about presentation, this thing just looked right, and then we decided to pick at it. My friend Jay was saying.. dude these are good, I went at it.. and in no time they just magically disappeared in our mouths, I think the next time I have these, I'm ordering a drink first. These roasted devils, were done perfectly, caramilized from the roasting, with a hint of sweetness in them, let's just say if they sold these in a jar at the front I might have taken one home.. and come back another day to get a refill! My buddy ordered the beer braised pulled pork on their savoury tart. This thing also came out on a big wooden slab. We are used to seeing pulled pork in little buns, well, think of pulled pork topped on a rectangular phyllo pastry. This was ok, as we found the pastry bottom, the corners a little thick, and tough. Next up was the charcuterie plate, where I chose 3 items for $15 (the breakdown is 1 for $7, 3 for $15, and 5 for $21) and we picked two meats and one cheese from the board. They support the local farms in BC with both their meats and cheeses and we ended up picking the catlaina chorizo, capicolla, and Holland Vintage gouda. Each was real good, and with drink in hand it just made my glass a little bit more empty each bite I took. If I could find that gouda... it would be sitting in my fridge! The drink of choice for tonight was the 'Tuxedo' which was a mixture of icewine, brandy, vermouth, orange bitters. It was good, not too stiff, easy drinking, something I definitely can recommend to order. I expect to be back to try more things, a 4.5 in my book (even though Yelp doesn't allow me to .5 anything.....) I had a great time here, and that was even after coming out and seeing my car getting ticketed (damn stupid meter maids who can't be real cops, bleep *&^*%%) so watch out when you park around here, but I'm glad they opened up a place like this. As I said, whether you have a date, or just want to chill out with a friend, this is the place to come to. The service is top notch, from our server who gave us a good time, and some comedy from the small talk, to one of the guys (who I believe maybe one of the owners) who asked us all the way through how things were. So this is an early review... but definitely recommended to come in here, have a seat, eat some nuts, have some drinks, and enjoy the night. read more

Came by for some drinks and some snacks. Parking is available in the side streets. The place is typical classy yuppie, with dim lighting but pale wooden furniture. The inside is quite small, but not cramped. Not sure how the place is horse themed, other than some horse tiles on the back wall. Because the place is small, groups size should be kept below 4, unless you are lucky and bag the long row of tables against the wall. Staff are professional, but the service was a bit lacking. We had to flag down the waiter a few times. Place is definitely quite pricey for what you get. I had 1/4 of a glass of wine and there were 2 charcuterie (literally a few pieces of bread and cheese, with a few slices of ham and some olives) boards shared between 6 people. Final bill was $25 per person. Yikes. Value is not what you'd find here. Sure the quality is there, but unfortunately I have trouble justifying a return visit. read more

Great place, slightly hidden on 13th off busy Granville street. We bought tickets to a musical, and was looking for a place for dinner before hand luckily I've had this place on my bookmarks. I called to make reservations. Highly recommend doing this gets busy during dinner time. Cute and cozy place. Small outside seating, bar seating and handful of tables. Walked in to a busy Friday night. I ordered one of their dinner specials braised beef cheeks. Tasty and very tender. Reminded me of really good corn beef. Came with mashed and veggies. My husband ordered the confit chicken thighs, I also tried it, it was good (I still preferred mine). The service was great, good selections of wine and drinks. Forever my favourite neighbourhood gem! I'm a big Stable House Fan, the wines, food, patio, service is everything you'd want. The Brussel sprouts with tahini, dates and lemon were outrageously good. I also tried the miso gnocchi and haven't stopped thinking about it...also the chicken liver Paté! I really want to try their brunch as that's the one thing I haven't been there for yet. This bistro restaurant is a great little place for friends to get together, have a drink and share some food. It is located on Granville Street and W. 13th Ave. I had to park on the street. The parking meter that I found was $2 for half an hour on Granville Street. My friends and I (3 of us) ordered and shared a featured flatbread with some beef sausages, lamb braised shrank and a mushroom puff pastry tart. The flatbread tasted a bit salty because of the beef/meat sausages but the texture of the flatbread was thin and crispy. It was quite unique. The mushroom puff pastry tart was the best! The lamb braised shrank was a bit dry that I wish the chef could add some sauce to the dish, but I still liked the dish as the lamb was not greasy. The service was great that our server was very polite and friendly. He let us know the special features of the day. He always followed up with us and made sure we were satisfied and/or if we needed anything. The pricing was reasonable overall. I wouldn't mind to come back to try other meals. read more

As you can see, I used to go to Stable House quite regularly! Once per week on brunch time. The main reasons why I used to go so often were the delicious croque madame (with salad and hash) and the great service from Nicky. Not sure what happened in that place but everything changed and not for the best. The croque now has a different taste and it is not as good as before; the salad that comes with it also is not as tasty as before; and that delicious hash disappeared although the price is still the same. Even the chocolate mousse has changed and the mushroom tart disappeared. Finally, Nicky is not there anymore. The nice vibe changed. Now Stable House seems to be a regular boring bistro with regular plain service that sells Mac-n-Cheese and Avocado Toast. I sometimes go back to have the Croque Madame, but the more I go, the less impressed I become with everything. Sorry, Stable House. I know that's not a good feedback. But I've followed this transition and I remember giving lots of feedback about the changes and things seem to keep changing not in a good way. I miss the old charming unique Stable House. That's all. --- Update on Jun 30, 2018 4 months after my previous update, I decided to give another chance to this place. My husband and I agree that my review above still makes a lot of sense. He had the croque madame and was again quite disappointed comparing with what the same dish used be last year and I tried the eggs benny which I was not impressed at all. Really bad service and overall experience! Super bummed cus they have such a cute outdoor area we came for happy hour and our waitress made it such a bad experience!!! She was so rude the entire time - not sure her name but she had a French type accent - she also took forEVER to come to our table every time! Wine was decent but the $28 charcuterie board was very lame!!!!! Too bad but won't be coming back and don't recommend coming here. Such a cute restaurant! It felt super cozy and warm inside. Although it is small, the use of the space was made very efficiently. I ordered the 5 item charcuterie. I sat outside on their new alley way patio which is a really fun addition to the restaurant! I got the medium charcuterie to share it was pretty good for the price but would probably order a bigger one next time! Also ordered some wine that was great, as they have a large wine selection! The atmosphere and the food were really great however the service was pretty poor. The charcuterie and wine made up for it though! We have twice found this neighbourhood bistro wanting. While comfortable and located in a great area, the dishes that we have had were uniformly bland and lacking in taste. The ingredients were undoubtedly fresh, but that only gets you so far. One couldn't even taste the listed ingredients, let alone the inspired touches that weren't listed (and, as it turns out, weren't there). The short wine list is quirky and, to our mind, on the pricy side, but not price-gouging. It doesn't have the wine of a wine bar, or the taste of a tapas bar. I suppose it is what I called it, a neighbourhood bistro. However, with a short menu (not a bad thing), each dish should have something to say besides "I'm fresh". Ours were mute and ascetic. Came for weekend brunch at 11:30am and restaurant was almost full but we got a seat no problem. Based on reviews, I ordered the mushroom gruyere tart and a eggs benny to share with my friend. I'm glad we shared so I could try more flavors! The mushroom tart was on a filo puff pastry with caramelized onion spread that gave it a sweetness I enjoyed. Topped with mushrooms and gruyere cheese, it was pretty tasty for a non-meat dish. Of course, I need my meat though which I got from the soppressata in the eggs benny. The waitress warned us that their eggs were sous vide and not poached so it would have runny egg whites. And yes, the egg whites were indeed runny but we didn't mind it and along with the hollandaise sauce, it provided good dip for the crispy soppressata and muffin. The hollandaise wasn't very memorable but everything came together to make a pretty good benny so must've been ok. The dishes came with a side of salad and a piece of potato latka. The salad was good but the latka was a bit under-seasoned. Solid brunch spot; just wish parking was easier to come by (20min of circling the block was making everyone hangry). If you've made efforts to drive/park here, might as well make a day of it and do some shopping on Granville St. Decor was clean, comfortable and service was friendly. read more

I like the restaurant but had a disappointing evening this week. I ordered the scallops as a medium plate but it is no more than a starter. The cheese and charcuterie platter were also of extremely modest portions, given the price of $30. My companion had better luck with his "large plate". It was a busy Sat. and altho we didn't have a reso, we were given the booth which was a great place to sit. Our impression was positive from the start. We tried a few different entrees including the smoked salmon and braised pork which were a bit on the average side but still good; the real winners of the night were the mushroom and gruyere tarts and they were so tasty that a second was ordered at our table. Also ordered the apple crisp with caramel sauce and the chocolate raspberry mousse desserts which were pretty standard but absolutely delicious. The sommelier and his pleasant treatment made the place worthwhile. Altho service was a tad slow and the whole "French" theme is a bit done, it's certainly a welcome change to the 'hood. I've eaten here a few times and their menu is getting a bit broader so 5 stars it gets. I've had some salmon, shepherd's pie, duck and pork confit, and confit tart (duck and pork,). They were all VERY delicious. The shepherd's pie felt like it came out of a nuclear oven, it was scorching hot. The confit and duck l'orange were mouth wateringly awesome although as of last night, the confit tart replaced the confit so be prepared for the menu to change. They also might have some wines available that aren't up on the board so have fun and explore. I'm really enjoying this place! read more

Stable house is an intimate setting with phenomenal service. First off out server Mark was very personable, friendly and gave great recommendations and good tips on menu items. The wine menu is great with many options to suit any taste and preference. For my entree meal I had the chefs daily special which was halibut... The first of the season. It came with a beautiful chick pea salad and house pickled carrots which were a personal favourite of mine. For desert my girlfriend and I shared the salted chocolate mousse it was so delicious that we actually ordered a second one to share!! Seriously it was that delicious.... Came here for drinks last night with a group. It was after 10pm and the bistro was quite quiet. We ordered a bottle of wine and some cocktails. It is a nice place to pop in for drinks after dinner. I have high hopes for our bottle of wine, however it turned out to be ok. The bartender also didn't have much info to share so we went with what was described on the menu... A quaint gem off the South Granville strip! The first thing you notice about the SH is the hidden location and the surprisingly beautiful interior; clean, minimalist, and stylish. My wife and I went for brunch here and were impressed with the french flavours and plate presentation. Considering the location, the prices are definitely reasonable and worth it. The Gruyere tart was topped up with meaty mushrooms sitting on a flaky crust...so...good. The 63 Degree Eggs Benny was absolutely "not your usual eggs benny"...in a good way. I was pleasantly surprised with the flavour combo of soppressata on an eggs benny. The quality of the meat definitely shined through and made what would seemingly be a heavy duo a delicious combo (especially w/ the side salad). The special touch came with the option to split the sides 50/50. In this case it was a quality fresh salad and a nice potatoe latke. Can't wait to come here for a date night! read more
