Went for a birthday dinner with quite a hefty party (7 ppl; we had a reservation) we didn't realize the space would be that small and cozy... Nonetheless, we felt welcomed-- coats were taken upon arrival and we were promptly seated. The food itself lacked a "wow" factor. It was lovely, sure, but it just didn't leave any kind of impression on me. Being a Michelin star restaurant, I expected something a bit more unique from them! Overall, it was a nice experience, but I wouldn't come back again.

I rarely agree with Michelin's rating. In the case of Gary's, however, I concur- good cooking skills. Joined 2025 Dineout Vancouver for this experience at Gary's. Curious to see how a pared down version will do. For 65$/ person you and your dining accomplice get to share 5 modest courses. (We walked away 75% satiated. But if you are on a Japanese diet, it is sufficient. Canadian? probably not.) Every dish was meticulously prepared and tasted good. Hearty and earthy. Not as expected of French refinement cuisine. Nor are the dishes creative. Service is a mixed bag. Although our server is super friendly to our neighbours, she was icy and unremarkably non conversational to us. The place is served by the progressive left. If you are into that sort of thing. Lastly is ambience. Anytime restaurants serving high ticket menus, they need to care about sound attenuation. Sure I appreciate the minimalist look to the place, but damn every surface of the place except the acoustic ceiling tiles was hard and reflective. Difficult to eat in 80 db sound space. Final bill came to be 180$ with tips and taxes. It's a okay.

This restaurant was busy but we got seated right away with a reservation. It seemed trendy and lively, a little loud so not as romantic as some. The food was delicious and we did a tasting menu. All of the dishes interestingly had a tart flavor or acidic take on the dish.

Service is phenomenal - coats were taken upon entrance, our server was attentive with topping off water, dishes were explained to us as they were presented. Ambience is a bit dim and cozy but perfect for a date night or special occasion. I would prefer a little more space as the tables were fairly close to each other. Prices are reasonable for the quality of food. I loved the smoked trout and the hands on assembly component of it was fun at the table. The mushroom and cheese go so well together, and the toast was hearty but a tad heavy. The tartar was a flavour bomb though I wasn't a fan of the blue cheese. I found it a bit pungent and overwhelming. The schnitzel was beautifully cooked. It was crunchy in the outside but juicy inside. The sauerkraut brought a strong contrast of acid. Overall it was a satisfying meal though I would still have to say the French food in Montreal stole my heart.

Gary's is a newer addition to the neighbourhood. We came without a reservation on a Thursday and got a table right away. We got their daily special which was the house made mortadella with fried bread and pate on brioche. For a main we shared the pork cheek spatzle with chanterelles and for dessert chocolate mousse with bergamot cream and almonds. The mortadella was not bad but the fried bread was the star of the show. It was savoury. The outside was crunchy. Very addictive and moorish The pate on brioche was amazing. It was the perfect balance of sweet and savoury. The pate was super smooth and the brioche had a bit of a crunch to it. I hope they put this on the menu permanently as it was the star of our meal The pork cheek spatzle was our least favourite out of all the dishes. I just didn't feel like the pork cheek and the spatzle blended well together. Would pass on this dish next time The chocolate mousse was really good. The almonds gave it a nice crunch and the salt helped balance out the sweetness of the chocolate. The cream was a welcomed addition Overall - the service here was really good. The staff know what they are talking about and seem passionate about what they are selling. The food was not bad. Not show stopping good (except for the liver pate) but not bad. I would recommend you check them out and check out their daily specials

This is a small restaurant with reservations highly recommended. There is some bar seating, but that is also reserved and quite busy. There are quite a few options on the menu, which changes seasonally. There is also a $69/person chefs choice option which is what we did and I would recommend. We has the rolls, pickled, cured trout, chicory salad, catfish and beef pot au feu. The dessert was an eggnog creme caramel. Portions are good so you won't leave hungry if you do the Chef's choice. The roll with garlic butter was super yummy and the pickles are actually a mix of veggies, not just dill pickles. Good, but not outstanding to me were the beef and the creme caramel. Service was good and the staff came by to refill waters regularly and clear plates. The one thing I would say is that the drink list is overpriced. Some of the options are what I would consider mediocre, but the cheapest wine by bottle is $65, a 3x mark up for what you would buy the same bottle for. Otherwise, a great option for a nice night out.

It's a small venue, reservation is best. We had the table menu and it was good value. $69/pers you get to try almost the entire menu. Some really good, some ok, some could do without. If going a la carte, definitely try the trout, chicken liver, creme caramel, and pot au feu. Tartare had blue cheese in it and chips were not crispy, I could have done without. Spatzle was bland. Chicoree, chicken, catfish, were good but nothing extraordinary. But for $69, we had a really good time, and recommend trying.

Beef tata blended well with blue cheese. Lingcod with mussel is amazing. Skipped desert for today's special, chicken liver and foie gras! Love it

I can't believe I haven't come across this neighbourhood gem earlier. Gary's is a small intimate restaurant celebrating its one year anniversary. On a Thurs evening, it was full house. We ordered the family style tasting menu for $69/ppl and added the daily special chicken liver & fois gras for $21. Food: -phyllis' pickles -rye rolls, seasonal butter - 5/5 - the rolls were warm and we liked the spicy flavoured butter. -gem lettuce, anchovy, hazelnut, caper vin, grana padano - 3/5- good and tasty and the hazelnut added a nice crunch. This was pretty standard Caesar salad. -kanpachi crudo, strawberry, sumac vinaigrette - 5/5 - nice flavors and this is suppose to be one of their highly rated dish on food reviews. -chicken liver & fois gras pate, butter maple waluts on toast - 5/5 - yummy -lingcod, shrimp, tomatoes, calabrian chile butter sauce - 5/5 - lingcod was perfectly cooked and paired well with the sauce. Argentinian shrimp was very good too. -beef cheek, marinated eggplant, peperonata - 5/5 - tender beef cheeks and the sauce was very nice. -chocolate mousse, bergamot cream, almonds - 3/5 - good. Service - top notch service. Overall - 5/5 - definitely recommend this restaurant and the tasting menu. I am looking forward to coming back for dinner again. Review Rating: 1 - Poor, 2 - OK, 3 - Good, 4 - Very Good, 5 - Excellent

My wife got us reservations for my birthday. You need to plan ahead to come because it books out. So great when a place lives up to the hype and expectations. Amazing service and incredibly well executed use of fresh, delicious local ingredients. I love the authentic British Columbianism of this establishment!!

The familiar restaurant spot at W12th and Granville. Wish the ventilation with the open kitchen is more effective as any customer will be overwhelmed by the strong kitchen smell sitting anywhere in the restaurant. Space is nice except the chairs were making rather loud noises rubbing on the concrete floor. Service very good. Wine prices on the higher side. Food didn't wow me as much as when I first went to the Mackenzie Room many years ago. I like the location but actually prefer food at the Collective Goods?

    Schnitzel and catfish

Wow. Totally recommend Gary's! We basically got the tasting menu but changed one of the apps to the bed tartare with bleu cheese (delicious). Great service and great food. The schnitzel and brats were outstanding, the catfish and potatoes and butter blanc were wonderful and the beef broth was incredible. Highly recommend.

The space is much nicer, with high ceilings and lots of light - great looking bistro. I ended up trying the following: - Mussels: Very good. Classic dish, but I really like the use of cream in the broth. - Bánh Mì Cay Hải Phòng (Spicy Baguette Sticks): Good. A nice little snack, although it would be easy to recreate at home. - Lamb Chops: Very good. Cooked just right, and the pepper sauce added extra flavour. - Fried Frog Legs: Very good. This was probably the surprise dish for me. They weren't just the legs, but the entire bottom of the frog, so the pieces were huge. The garlic, butter and chili flakes gave it a extra punch. I really enjoyed this one. - Pho Bo: Good. Not the best pho I've had, but it's good enough to stand on it's own. Service was quite good. Very cheerful and quite attentive. Overall a nice meal. It's a great space, the food is solid, and service to match. What I really like is having the variety of both French and Vietnamese dishes, without either of them suffering in quality. Only downside is that is it expensive for what you get.

The bone broth was good and the price for the mini version is good for a light lunch. We both enjoyed the spicy baguette stick with the pork pate. A pleasant surprise. However i find the escargot a bit pricey with the quantity and the way it was prepared. Slightly too oily to my personal prefence The iced vietnamese coffee we ordered tasted similar to a regular iced coffee, missing the sweet condensed milk flavor for a vietnamese coffee
