Since the Indonesian food festival ended up being a bust (we tried three places--only to find all of them closed or out of stock; it felt like they could have done better with inventory management), we decided to eat at the nearby, recently opened 1931 Gallery Bistro (part of the Vancouver Art Gallery). I had been here before for an event (they host large groups), so I wanted to try their regular menu. Overall impression, the service could definitely be improved in terms of attentiveness, though I know they just recently started operating. We had to wait quite a while to place our order and to ask for the cheque. However, the food and coffee tasted pretty good and were reasonably priced. For our lunch, we decided to share the following three dishes--which, somehow, all ended up being vegetarian (though not on purpose): * Spring Vegetable Flatbread ($16): An unexpected favorite for me. It's a simple dish but wonderfully executed--perfect for hot weather. Crispy bread topped with zucchini, tomato, arugula, and goat cheese, served with a balsamic glaze. * Cauliflower Steak ($25): A classic dish I usually enjoy; however, the execution this time could be improved. The smaller florets were quite oily, and the cauliflower itself was rather bland. The ratio of bean purée and herb chimichurri felt off compared to the size of the cauliflower. * Mushroom & Pea Risotto ($23): This was definitely the prettiest dish, thanks to its bright green color. Such a cute little spot right in Robson Square! I had seen this place pop up on my Yelp page multiple times so I decided to finally check them out. Went there on a Sunday morning for quick bites. It was a bit hard at first to spot the place because it is literally in the middle of Robson Square. Their space is so cozy and bright with big windows. I loved their interiors! I decided to order their sides because I wasn't too hungry. :: Croissant with homemade jam - the croissant was crusty on the outside and soft the inside... LOVED IT! The jam was also delicious, I forgot to ask the server what jam it was but I'm guessing it was blackberry maybe? The butter and jam combo went really well together. :: Danish - they had a bunch of flavours in their danish but I chose the cherry danish and it was YUM! It had the right amount of custard and cherry mix. It was also very soft and melted in your mouth :: Falafel sliders - my main issue with falafel sandwiches in general is that it can become too dry but these were not! they had a lot of sauces in their which added flavour and made sure the slider wasn't dry. Weird response to a food allergy. I have a food allergy to only 3 things - corn, dairy and carrageenan. Everywhere else in Vancouver folks looked through their ingredients and told me what I could have. Here, they said for liability reasons they wouldn't feed me anything but a protein and a vegetable. Weirdest service ever. They wouldn't even let me have an oatmilk latte- which are always safe. If you have a food allergy don't go here as they are completely unwilling to work with customers. My server clearly misunderstood my allergy card but he decided he knew better and said for legal reasons I couldn't order anything but a protein and veggie. My food allergy isn't even deadly - it's really a good intolerance, but the server wasn't about to listen to me. This little bistro that's located inside the Vancouver Art Gallery is lovely for lunch. Inside used to be more cafeteria style, but they changed it to a sit and order type of place. In the summer, sit outside on the covered patio to enjoy your meal with drinks. Yes, they have alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. I had the kale Caesar salad and added steak. Food is mediocre and not as high end as you'd think it is. Tucked away in the art gallery and it was quite hard to find. Waitress didn't have too friendly of a demeanour so we were afraid to ask for more things. Food was solid, but wasn't fantastic for the price. Overall, it wasn't bad but the two star is because of the service. I really enjoyed the salmon risotto. Perfect texture and how I like it. Flavour was there. Duck breast was quite chewy and my least favourite. Tuna tartare and cauliflower were subpar, but bornhorrivl Maybe the waitress had a bad day? I met my parents here for brunch while they were visiting in September. It's located in the Art Gallery building, and can be accessed from the stairs outside, or by going in and taking the elevator if stairs are an issue. The weather was good and the patio was very nice, the inside is also very nicely designed as you would expect. I got the shrimp toast, which I thought was pretty good (looks like it's no longer on the menu though), and my parents enjoyed their food too. It was a long wait for our food and then another long wait to flag down a waiter for the bill. I wasn't actually watching the time so I can't give exact numbers. The wait staff was very friendly though. I wouldn't choose them for a quick bite, but for a leisurely dining experience I'd visit again. read more

The Salmon (wild) Burger & Bison Burger were sooooooooooo tastay #souleater Side note - Bison is cooked medium to rare to avoid dryness which would totally wreck the burger! If you want it well done, be aware that it could mean your burger will end up tasting like dry cardboard = not fun! I'll admit I was weirded out by the black bun, but I got into it after my second bite. Dang ... after I ate my bison burger, I wanted to stretch out & lay down on the patio chair I was on. A very lovely place for lunch or brunch hidden away inside the Vancouver art gallery on the second floor. If the weather cooperates, get a table outside for a truly blissful experience. We had the bison burger and the salmon burger. You cant go wrong with either selection. Also they offer sparkling water as well as still, which is appreciated. Downside is that it's a little on the pricey end for a casual meal. Also do make reservations, so you can bypass the wait. If you're looking for casual upscale this is the place to eat, especially in the summer. read more

Found a new restaurant gem! Been hearing about 1931 Gallery Bistro recently and years ago, I recalled it used to be some kind of cafeteria style cafe. Am happy to report that they have seriously upgraded this place to a full restaurant with one of the best (and largest) outdoor patios in Downtown Vancouver. The 1931 Gallery Bistro has a wicked Happy Hour menu - we ordered a dozen oysters with premium toppings (+$5), potato coquette, miso cauliflower, pork belly tortillas, and salmon tartare. Really wanted the bison sliders but unfortunately, they ran out. Food was incredible! I loved how the oysters are on cold rocks, instead of ice, so that the rocks can be reused. Kudos to the restaurant for implementing such a great sustainable practice! The $5 premium toppings for the oysters is worth every penny and will last you for at least 2 dozen oysters. Potato coquette was perfectly cooked and I loved the taste of the miso cauliflower as it didn't taste overly salty, which a lot of miso dishes tend to be. Pork belly tortillas were a big portion considering they are $3 each, or 3 for $15 during Happy Hour. I saw the $11 charcuterie board and it looked AMAZING but unfortunately, my stomach could only fit in so much food. Ambiance of the patio really sold the place. Everything was spaciously laid out - there were high top tables to enjoy meals at plus some home style balcony furniture lounge sofas to chill and relax with friends. They also had live music from 6pm onwards!! The inside of the restaurant is also super cute. I think I've found a new date + hangout place. They also have a daily happy hour menu from 4-6pm. I booked our reso for 5:30 so we could enjoy some $1 oysters before our meal. From their Dine Out menu I tried: Salmon crudo with kettle chips Sake & soy sablefish with soba noodles Duck leg confit White chocolate & strawberry mousse Lavender panna cotta Each dish was delicious and beautifully plated. Just a heads up if you plan on trying this menu: while I liked the lavender panna cotta, it's not for everyone. The lavender flavour is strong and overpowering and my friend didn't like it at all. A few things could be improved: *The lighting was very weird. Right after happy hour ended, the room became really dark. * Drinks are reasonably priced, but I wasn't a fan of the wine glasses. They were stemless and my red wine came in an even smaller glass than my white wine. *They can work on their timing. There was a longer than needed break between each course and dinner lasted about 2.5 hours. They have a beautiful patio overlooking Robson Square. Thought their 2023 Dine Out menu would be a good opportunity to try their dinner service. Heard that some folks found the food to be average considering the price - this was not my experience! My friend and I shared each of our courses so I got to try a bit of most of the dishes. The portions were all good - no tiny fancy food here! I also felt effort was made into making the dishes and flavour profiles and textures unique. We ordered the tuna & potato leek soup for the first course; mushroom tartine and short rib for second; and maple cheesecake and profiterole for dessert. Both appetizers were excellent. The soup was flavourful and comforting and the tuna was fresh and the sauce it came with complimented it nicely. Short rib was not bad, pretty tender and felt decadent with the cheesy polenta. I thought the toasts and tartine were nice but the roast veggies were a little undercooked. Maple Cheesecake was delightful without being too heavy. Profiteroles weren't bad but not as memorable as the cheesecake. For downtown, I thought $35 for drink pairings per course was pretty good. Comparable to me buying two glasses of wine with my dinner. ATTENTION PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU COME HERE!! AS A TRUSTED REVIEWER WITH GOOD TASTE, I WOULD DEPICT THE DINEOUT OF THE RESTAURANT. Finally, i went here for the dineout experience of $55 - 3 course set menu. I was able to try all the dineout menu and i was able to tell the experience of the whole dining for this restaurant. A dineout experience should show the restaurant's best showcase and would be able to let the customers judge it. Course 1 - Pomelo Salad (VG/GF): The salad is just basic nothing special with this menu. Avoid this if you are here for the dineout. (1) - Tuna & Salmon Mosaic (GF): This dish is quite good so if you want to get a gluten free this is the choice. I would recommend this one. (4) - Steak & Mushroom: This is the best from all of the entree and the dineout from this restaurant. You should get this one for sure for the first course. (5) Course 2 - Crab Risotto: This dish is too salty and watery. I could barely even taste the risotto. As much as i love salty food, this is even too salty for me. Avoid this at all cost. (1) - Five Spice Duck: You should get this out of all the dishes in this course. This was quite exceptional. I could taste the duck and the skin really well. The seare of the duck should be take more into account so that the skin is more compeling and deliciouso and can get a full rating from me. (4) - Mapo Tofu (VG): The mapo tofu is quite bad. The tofu is chosen with the hard tofu. Mapo tofu should use medium tofu. I presumed that the chef scared of making the tofu disoriented. The taste was just so so since not the real mapo tofu flavour. (2) Course 3 - Carrot Cake (VG/GF): The carrot cake was the best option from all nonetheless they were all bad in my opinion. The presentation of this dish compared with other selections are better. Nothing much to say yet. (3) - Chocolate Ganache Bar: The presentation is awful. There is too much empty space. Mind using a smaller plate. The taste is not that good either (2) - Yuzu Tart: Same with the chocolate ganache bar, too many empty spot, so the presentation is awful. The taste was just okay as well. (2) Nonetheless, the dinout experience was just so so and not worth in my opinion. All these for $165 not worth it in my opinion. A lot of restaurants can do a better job. The asian just please avoid it. You may want to reconsider of serving asian food here. Moreover, the serving between each course takes too long. If it is longer than 15 minutes, it is too long. To prevent this, you may want to serve free bread while we wait for the next course. Furthermore, I paid for the bill of the table beside me. Luckily, i noticed and asked for a refund. It was weird that i did not drink any alcohol but was asked to pay for the PST. Fortunately, the server was great and apologise for the mistake. I was able to pay the right amount. Always being honest here and mention everything happened with the dining experience. Again, these are feedbacks for the restaurant and for the chef, so it is up to you how you want to take it. I just found out you get 10% off the food with your art gallery membership. Darn! I did not know that when I dined there previously. I had the halloumi galette which was delicious. It did not look that big but I was stuffed by the time I finished it. Regular coffee was refillable which was lovely. Menu is via the QR code. The bad thing about that is it only shows the current menu. So you have to go to the actual website if you want to know the dinner or happy hour menus. They look more interesting with more food items than the lunch/brunch menu. I will want to go back again for the desserts and happy hour items. We saw this place on Dished Vancouver's Instagram and were instantly in love!! Every weekend, we try our best to get on a hunt to search for new restaurants around our area to review! The service was amazing! Right from the bat, people already were very helpful and friendly! They even helped us out with food we were craving that they weren't serving anymore! 1931 Gallery Bistro is the definition of elegance and good tasting food without sacrificing large portions! I came here for weekday brunch/lunch and was so impressed. Their patio has ample seating that is appropriately socially distanced, and the staff here were all so amazing. As I waited for my food, literally every plate that was carried over to another table looked like art. They have a signature bison burger with a charcoal bun that looked amazing, and the avocado toast was so pretty. We tried the salmon eggs Benedict and the croque madame. Let me just say that the croque madame brioche they use here is BIGGER THAN YOUR FACE. The bread melts in your mouth and is like eating cake - so good! I also loved the twist on potato croquettes, which were super rich and delicious too. I would recommend dining here at 1931 for a business lunch, get together with friends, or even romantic date. Great service and when they didn't have the oysters I wanted they were quick to offer alternative suggestions. Beautiful presentation of oysters where they sat atop white rocks, garnished with lemon and came accompanied with a whole sauce bar. Horseradish, ikura (fish roe), tobasco, jalapeno sauce... Murakami caesar was loaded with toppings, this might be my first one with smoked salmon. The booze wasn't entirely strong but it was $18 and a drink well made. Located in heart of downtown Vancouver, 1931 Gallary Bistro located in Vancover Art Gallery. This restaurant serves menu of West Coast fusion dishes. They are participating in the current Dine Out Vancouver Festival. My overall dining experience was pleasant. The dishes were either hit or miss. The highlight of the dishes was the Appetizer. I would recommend the Steak and Mushroom Maple, the onion soubise was the spotlight. The second highlight was the dessert; Chocolate Ganache Bar Crunchy. Cannot go wrong with Crunchy Chocolate bar! For the entrees, I would recommend the Five Spice Duck Fraser Valley. The pear and squash complement the red wine jus very well Since this is a Pan Asian restaurant, I found there are some eccentric dishes in their menu. The Mapo Tofu was served coconut rice with Risotto-like texture, but the mapo tofu were too firm and lacked of spices. Other than that, the carrot cake with spices was also peculiar to me. read more

We had brunch here today with a good friend on the Sunday before Christmas. We found the service very slow, mediocre and inattentive - it was not that busy. We ordered Steak 'frites' which is mislabelled. The 'frites' consisted of rather cold and soggy roasted potatoes. Steak frites implies shoestring French fries, not some excuse for home fries. The steaks were fine - very tasty and properly cooked. As far as ambience goes, the venue is noisy (please put rubber feet on the chairs!); the decor cold and bleak. Mimosas were delicious. a and i had made a reservation for this restaurant. we were a little early and we saw that they were setting up tables on one side of the patio area - turns out it was a cute little wedding reception so congrats to the couple! we made it for hh, once they cleaned our table up, and the patio was def packed - with social distancing ofc. i started off with my usual g&t - tho this time it was the nude gin soda with lemon. i had 2 of those so that obvsly tells you my opinion on that. a had an aperol spritz, which was made with wallflower gin. she found that drink to be on a sweeter side. for munchies, there was a buck a shuck on the menu so julia obvsly had to get some! the oysters that i had today were the creamiest ones that i've had - they were local bc oysters too! chef's creek oysters - which i found out afterwards - and i basically devoured those. i also had the potato croquettes, which were in cute little toast shapes. small but enough to satisfy that carb crave. a had the miso cauliflower bites (which i stole a bit of) and the charcuterie for one. btwn the two, a liked the charcuterie but there was a goat cheese spread that she was surprised with. i found the cauliflower to be flavourful but a was expecting them to have more of a crunch. i also ordered the tuna poke - WHICH YOU NEED TO GET - it was a perfect combo of sweet and savoury. the kettle chips that it came with adds a nice contrast with the softness of the tuna. a decided to skip dinner and order dessert at this point; i followed suit but with another drink to boot. i was torn btwn banksy on the rum and o'keefe's pimms (loving all the artist refs btw). ultimately got banksy on the rum, which was prbly a bad idea but wth. the drink was nice tho the cherries left a cough syrup aftertaste. a had the match brûlée tart - she loved everything abt it. i had the chocolate ganache bar, which was very rich considering the size of it. the coffee cream does cut a bit of the richiness but this is def something you should share with someone. i did like the cunchy feuilletine bottom. there were other items on the menu that i wanted to try - there was this beef short rib main that caught my eye. i guess that means i'll have to go back and try it! read more

Visited the renovated/reopened/new 1931 Gallery Bistro at the Vancouver Art Gallery yesterday for the 2020 Hot Chocolate Festival! I had been once before they closed and it was more of a casual eatery, but now the interior is very chic and minimalist, and it feels very posh. It was pretty quiet when my friend and I went around 3:45 on Sunday. We ordered one each of their hot chocolate offerings ($8.95 each): I got the "Velvety Chocolate Overhol" which was a blend of dark chocolate, banana, and cardamom. My friend got the "Must-Have for Gustav" which was a white hot chocolate with black pepper and yuzu notes. Both were quite tasty and I could taste all the featured flavours in mine which was nice! Each hot chocolate came with a little treat too! Mine with a banana and espresso tartlet, and my friend's had a trio of house-made (I'd assume so, anyways) coconut dusted jellies. All in all the presentation was nice but at the price point, I wish the serving size was a bit bigger. I also ordered off their Happy Hour menu (3-6 p.m.) which was a pleasant surprise to see, but the "Small Bite" Fig & Brie Rye Crisp ($3.95) I ordered was rather disappointing. Plus it took a long time to come out, despite being pretty quiet. The cheese was a bit hard around the edges, probably from being prepped and set in the fridge all day. I think after coming here a second time, I preferred my earlier visit before the remodel. There was more of a friendly vibe to the place and it didn't feel as high brow. All of the servers were nice, but the atmosphere and expensive eats just felt a bit too fancy for me to return any time soon. read more

I ordered the ham benny on DD and it arrived ice cold. It took 2 hours to get me my food and the dasher was waiting for them so it was the restaurant's fault not the driver. The salad that came with it tastes terrible. Not sure what was up with the dressing but it was quite bad, offensive even, like nutritional yeast or cheap margarine or something artificial-tasting. It was awful, and I couldn't eat it and had to throw it out. The benny and the bread it was on was not bad, and the eggs were poached right--only redeeming qualities--but I was not able to enjoy it because it was cold and the salad dressing was so bad I had to throw out the salad. The potatoes and Hollondaise were bland. Overall a very disappointing eggs benny breakfast order. I'm not sure why another reviewer would say that the brunch was good, I'm wondering if we ate from the same place or maybe the quality is inconsistent. I would be quite reluctant to order from them again. Perhaps if I had dined in, it would've been a more positive experience, but after that salad dressing, I'm really not sure that would be a good idea. read more

Their food is mostly fusion, I ordered the dishes that had Japanese inspiration behind them and I was not at all offended by the chefs take on the dishes. We came here on an impromptu brunch date and was surprised with the ambiance and service that was provided throughout. Buck-a-shuck was on and yes! They were amazing. It was served on top of some salt rocks that provided the cold touch to the oysters the entire time we ate. Joined their high tea during the Fleur de Villes event, where a portion of the proceeds went to Breast Cancer Research. Their patio is pretty busy, we arrived around noon so we got a table inside. There was a selection of teas to choose from, and the high tea was presented on three tiers, savoury and sweet items. I very much enjoyed their savoury items which included smoked salmon on cucumber, a croissant sandwich, tenderloin, cauliflower and a mini burger. All were so tasty, and the tenderloin was very tender! The scone was lavender flavoured which was also delicious. I really wanted to try out their dine outside 2020 set menu and their happy hour for buck a shuck oysters (4-6pm) so we made reservations at 5:30pm and sat on the patio. The space is super nice with a great view of robson ice rink and the fairmont. Happy hour Buck a shuck oysters - got 12 (6 each) oysters and it came with 3 sauces, chunky mignonette, salsa verde, and soy sesame. The oysters were surprisingly big but creamy. So worth!! 10oz pilsner beer - $6, I suggest to get the $8 16oz beers, it's more worth it. Cauliflower - very mediocre cauliflower that tasted boiled. Not bad but not great, wouldn't get again. Entree Beef - braised short rib with greens and mashed potatoes. So tender and had a really good gravy. The potatoes and greens were not bad either. Dine Outside 2020 unfortunately only had one choice for each other course, would've love to see more options. Fig and chevre salad - SO GOOD!! The honey poached figs were so soft and not overly sweet and complemented nicely with the goat cheese and greens. My only complaint would be that ours had a bit too much dressing for my liking that made it feel oily. Red curry halibut - this was a let down since the curry sauce wasn't very flavourful and the halibut was bland and only lightly fried, nothing special. Peach gateau - this was one of the best desserts I've had in awhile!!! It took a bit of time to prepare it but definitely so worth it. The cake was so moist and wasn't overly sweet at all and had fresh and poached peaches. The whipped cream was tart like yogurt. The gateau made up for our underwhelming entree. Overall, I think generally their food is really good and especially beautifully plated but there was just a few misses that could've made it better. Our total wasn't very expensive either, $124 with tip for two people for all that food! I would love to come back for their happy hour and maybe try other regular menu items in the future. read more

This was an amazing brunch! I had a spinach & feta quiche with side salad, and my boyfriend had the whiskey bacon french toast. Great service and great coffee, too. No reservations but if you go early you'll have no problem getting a seat on the patio. A little pricey but I think worth it was the location and vibes. Can't wait to go back! read more

Monday's is a BOGO entree day and they've significantly upped their food game. it's well plated elegant food. only 4 stars as the server struggled that day and food was missed on all tables that were present and the pacing across the board was off (food didnt arrive or arrived after everyone had finished), but the server was pleasant and took it in stride I will definitely come back. you could get 2 sablefish entrees for $38 total on a Monday in a lovely city patio setting. read more

If you're looking for a beautiful and quiet spot in the Summer time, this is it! I discovered this hidden patio through my friend as she saw a video on TikTok (of course). It is a bit tricky to locate the bistro as it is behind the museum and have to walk all the way around the building. Look for signs or follow the crowd! We were greeted right away by the hostess and directed to our spot. Thankfully, we were in the shade as it was extremely hot outside. The server was friendly and approached us right away. He wasn't too knowledgeable of the menu as he had mentioned the happy hour was Sauvignon Blanc than quickly remembered it was Chardonnay but no problem! Our reservation was at 5:45 and he reminded us it was happy hour until 6:00 so we were able to surprisingly catch happy hour which is definitely a plus. Happy hour portions are small but the prices are great! You can't beat $1 oysters. However, our main courses were not worth the money spent. My caeser salad did not have much flavour and it was awkward having to cut my own piece of romaine lettuce. No where on the menu mentioned it was not already cut. The salmon was cooked well and flavourful but the risotto was disappointing. The sauce was almost like soup and the rice was drowning in it. Normally the sauce is quite thick which makes the rice more thick. Nothing special in the food category. I enjoyed my happy hour Chardonnay. Sadly the server did not know the type/ brand of wine but alcohol is alcohol during happy hour. The aperol spritz was presented nicely and it was a very refreshing! Drinks were a win! Overall, I would recommend coming for happy hour for the food and drinks but only because of the great deals and the environment! I would come again but only for happy hour food and drinks. In all, I would give the 1931 Gallery Bistro a 3/5. read more

I didn't know of this place until recently. Me and my boyfriend came for lunch. Nice patio space for a sunny day. European vibes. Pretty small menu. I ordered the Tomato and Mozzarella Sandwich. I give that 10/10 it was really good. My boyfriend ordered the chicken bowl. It was good but chicken was greasy because it was cooked like a Thai bowl. Small portion compared to other things in the menu. We did see the brunch plates and looked really good and big portions. We wanna come again for the brunch. I love this place, definitely a new favourite spot. Everything was plated so beautifully and the portion sizes were good. The tuna poké bowl really exceeded my expectations. I have zero complaints about the service, the staff were super friendly and professional. We also got a pitcher of sangria to share between 2, probably one of the best sangria's I've ever had if not the best.
