Seeing the negative reviews on here surprised me as I have been finding myself returning to the Burgundy Restaurant again and again. I typically only get the breakfasts and every time they have been phenomenal, and reasonablly priced. The service is always top notch and so kind! The ambiance is that of a chill, laid back, 70's diner. Out of all the newer breakfast spots that pop up in the area this one has stood the test of time for an obvious reason, consistency and quality from your first visit. Let me be clear this is not the greatest breakfast in the world where every bite will blow your mind, but the food is good and in my 4+ visits now it has been good every time. The menu is simple but executed exceptionally well with classics being served the way they should be. This is a no-frills family diner where you can grab a steak, a skillet, or just a slice of pie and know you're in for a well-made meal/snack. I Highly recommend for breakfast if your in the area and I am looking forward to trying them out for dinner sometime soon! read more

Burgundy Restaurant is a diner located at the corner of Irving Park and Austin. My buddy had been there before, but I made my debut visit there on Sunday. We were going to eat lunch at another restaurant, but that place was not ready to open at its listed opening time. Since Burgundy is big on breakfast, we figured that this would be a sure thing to be open for our noon lunch. They were doing a brisk business, with many of its booths filled with mask-wearing customers. Our waitstaff were all prompt and courteous, and we appreciated that our beverage glasses were being filled without us asking. I tend to order meat loaf at diners, so here I go again. The soup that came with my meal (I chose cream of chicken rice, my bud went with chicken noodle) was filling but bland. The crackers did not help too much. The meat loaf came with mixed veggies, and I asked for hash brown-style potatoes. The meal was fine but not particularly memorable. My bud wolfed down his plate of mostaccioli and meatballs with little comment. Burgundy Restaurant was fine for our get-together lunch, but I would not select it as a first-choice place to go. read more

A craving for meatloaf took me to the Burgundy Restaurant on a Saturday afternoon. I haven't been to this place in about 40 years. This place is probably great for a weekend breakfast, but I was not impressed with the dinner. It was just okay. Golden Corral meatloaf is even better. Also, I can't figure out why the owner posted pictures of the food on the walls, just below the ceilings. It's tacky and makes it look more like a fast food restaurant. This place took me by surprise. When we were searching for diners and came across this restaurant I was skeptical cause of the pictures I saw but on getting there it was very different from my imagination. The ambiance was GREAT! This has got to be one of the worst efforts I've seen from a restaurant, we ordered a Turkey and gyros plate and it was literally the worst cooked meal I've had in a long time, I would've preferred fast food from the dollar menu over this. The gyros was burned to a crisp and looks like it had been re-heated and the turkey club had no bacon so when I called to ask why it didn't have bacon I was told that the one with bacon is the turkey clubhouse ?!?!? I live less than a block away and will never return to this place, not to mention the turkey seemed like it's been in the fridge for weeks. No pride in what they do here. read more

I had high hopes for this place. It has been here for as long as I can remember. As I am walking up 3 of Chicago's finest are walking out. Usually places where cops eat are good. If not a good value. Inside the place is a classic 70/80s restaurant. Nice breakfast bar for single patrons, old school sugar containers at each table. They also had an old school mechanical cash register. I was very excited. They even had biscuits and gravy on special! The seasoned staff failed to seat me, this was my fist indication that things may not be great. I think the owner eventually told me to sit wherever. I know places are short staffed and if there were more than 5 other people in the place I would totally give a pass on this as I appreciate how hard it is to be a server. It was dead though. I sat in a booth which needed seat repairs badly. The vinyl looked nice but the seat underneath was clearly broke. I ordered bng 2 eggs over easy. 2 sausage patties, coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice. The oj was by far The best part of my meal. The sausage patties were cisco but so was everything if I had to guess. At least these were ok, and what ended up being a majority of what I ate. The coffee was weak, the gravy was white with no seasoning and like 6 tiny pieces of sausage which were completley different tasing that the patties. This has to come from a can, if I had to guess. The biscuits were the thawed pre made pucks. They were server Luke warm and not toasted even. I have had the pucks taste pretty good when skillet warmed with some butter. Hell, even the eggs came out and were bland. Like no seasoning was used what so ever. The pancakes looked good but with everything else sucking so bad I can't see coming back. Fortunately, Burgundy offers "breakfast-all-day" option and it's open until 10pm from Mondays to Saturdays, and 9pm on Sundays. Breakfast is Rosa's favorite meal because it may be the only meal she can have in a peaceful, non-hectic setting. However, hubby and I wanted to grab a quick bite before heading to a friend's Halloween party. We ordered these following dishes: - tuna melt: it came with soup (navy bean soup was his choice) and fries, unless you ask for a special accommodation. Hubby munched it quickly before I had a chance to talk to him. I guess I was caught up with the soccer game playing on TV. - steak skillet: it came with a choice of toast (wheat in my case). Poached eggs were done impeccably! Those were really the highlights. Otherwise, the steak and hash browns were passable. Hubby also requested coffee, so the grand total came to $24 after tax. Credit cards are accepted, yet unsure about the minimum purchase. Like I have mentioned in the first paragraph, a diner like Burgundy is essential for a neighborhood. A great find with clean comfy booths, nice waitstaff and support, and dang good food ! Impromptu coffee and breakfast gathering randomly wound up at Burgundy. Insert gag about keeping it classy, I don't mind, Ron. Burgundy can handle a joke, a curveball, or, in our case, a boisterous five-top that was grateful to be here. It was only afterwards outside that I noticed one of their signs trumpeting the Ham off the Bone. Well, it caught my eye when it mattered - on the menu. Trust that the sign if you must, but they are signing the Truth. Cause, y'know? It was tasty. An unapologetic border of fat, that you could do with what you please, but most important: It was meaty and not too salty. It appeared in my Pancake Sandwich. Two eggs, Two pancakes and between the cakes rested the ham. I opted for poached, separately, and they were cooked just right -- without me specifically even asking. And yes, they came on the side. Always a good sign from the kitchen and the Staff. The meat scramble that someone else had looked awesome: full of meat and veggies. It was huge, so he had a lil somethin' somethin' for later. Another asked for fries ,if they were available at breakfast (this was before 10am). Again, no problem. I wish I knew of Burgundy Restaurant when I lived in Chicago. It's not my typical neighborhood, and that's what makes it that much cooler. You can come home again - and still find 'new' places. read more

First time going there so my review is basically on breakfast. I ordered an omelet with potatoes on the side and white bread my boyfriend ordered a chorizo skillet and white bread as well. I ordered a root beer float and my man ordered chocolate milk. The root beer float was my favorite! Personally I thought there was a good balance between the root beer and ice cream portion. My omelette was in good portion and my potatoes were nice and crispy on the outside but soft in the inside. My boyfriends enjoyed his skillet and thought there was a good amount of flavor. Sunday Brunch. How I love thee! My boyfriend and his family love coming here to have brunch and he was talking about it all week. I was starting to get a bit jealous because I wanted to try this place out too. Luckily we all decided to go there for a quick brunch. WIN! Cute little place. Lots of seating. It's def an older diner and nothing too fancy. We parked on the street and my boyfriend's mom told me that there are some free spots but mostly metered parking. The staff at The Burgundy informed us that you can actually park across the street at the bank on the weekends. DOUBLE WIN! We were sat promptly and we placed our orders. I ordered the HOMEMADE corned beef hash with 2 eggs. My boyfriend had the scrambled eggs with bacon and sausage. Both of our meals came with fluffy pancakes. Both of our meals went off without a hitch! Both of them were absolutely delicious. My BF also ordered some orange juice. This ain't from concentrate either, fresh squeezed, baby! It was a nice added touch to a fantastic brunch. I believe that this place would be best for breakfast and lunch. I am looking forward to my next visit to The Burgundy. read more

Not horrible by any means, but not the greatest diner either. The menu is overwhelming and has near everything you can think of, which to me, usually means that the food is "just okay." My friend and I stopped there for a light bite to eat while taking a walk through my neighborhood. It was a Saturday night and the place was DEAD. I think there was one other party there, which is okay, and typically doesn't alert me, except that half the lights were off in the restaurant. That made us feel rushed. My friend had breakfast: eggs, bacon, pancakes. The pancakes rocked. I had spinach pie that the waitress recommended. It was really good and not greasy like some of them can be. It came with a fruit plate. I wish the fruit was fresh. You can't really get a fruit plate wrong unless you serve old, mushy fruit which is what I got. Old watermelon and mushy grapes. I started writing this review right after I first went...but the experience was so lackluster that I couldn't bring myself to post it. It reminded in my "Unfinished" reviews list for months and months. Today I got a "Write More" compliment and decided to post it...so here it is.... A while back, I led a friend on a wild goose chase around the Northwest side of the city. I claimed I wanted to go to Super Cup diner. Well, Super Cup Diner was out of business, so then we kept driving. After making a stop at Eli's Cheese Cake world, we were starving. We drove down Harlem and made it to some little Italian conclave. We tried stopping at Capones for pizza and pasta, but they were closed for a private party. On to drive some more, we finally spied Burgundy Restaurant and went in. Meh...the food was boring, The waitress was very slow to get to us to take our order and very fast to complete it, so I ended up forgetting to ask for cheese on my veggie omelet. The rye toast ended up as white and everything was just palatable. It's standard diner food, and at least it's not closed like everything else in the vacinity. read more

Came here with my girlfriend. Our waitress' section was not at all busy but it took nearly 20 minutes for her to take our order (with attitude). After serving our food she ignored us while tending to every table around us. My meal came with soup but was never given. When we asked for it we were again ignored. I had the country fried steak and it was bland and soggy. And I was thirsty. I still remember that thirst. Why won't she refill our drinks? The only thing The Burgundy is serving is disappointment. Wouldn't recommend going out of your way for here. If it wasn't for the fact my last few visits I took my chances and ordered some traditional Greek items that surprised me, I think I would give this place one star. This is the rare diner where for whatever reason, I have no idea why they can't get breakfast items right. Heck, it makes the mediocre pancake dish I got at Elly's Jeff Park almost good in comparison. If it wasn't for the fact my friends infrequently come here and that I sometimes go along to give them company, I'd never come back. Honestly if you're don't know the diners out on this part of town well, I'd suggest going to Lucky Grill instead. Heck, I have an odd feeling you might have a better experience going to Big Top(open 24/7 IIRC, and at least is open just as late if they now only do 24 hours on weekends by some chance), or A's instead(northeast corner of Irving/Naragansett, and too bad it doesn't stay open past 5pm). I have to start by saying I love breakfast places! I have been to this one twice before and it was always "nice", never stood out. I had a veggie omelet with feta, substituted hash browns for mashed potatoes since they didn't have grits. The veggie omelet was fairly good. Not mind blowing amazing, but not dry, well cooked on the inside, lots of veggies, and the feta was not too chunky. Yum. The gravy that came with the potato was unexpectedly flavorful (where did yoooou come from?) Now this is where the true stars are earned and I felt compelled to jump on Yelp. The waitress was attentive and very nice. My mother asked if they had cheese blintzes (God, mom, aren't you full?! I'll have to help you eat that, obviously, help you from yourself.) Apparently they didn't since she went back and checked...BUT then came back and said they could try to make them. They used cottage cheese in the middle and they were...AWESOME. My mother being a huge fan of them declared them the best she has ever had and I concur. SO, points to them for accommodating our craving and fulfilling it so nicely.
