Pretty average diner. We like it because it's close and they always give my son whipped creme for his pancakes. It's not the best breakfast food I've ever had but I will say they serve the most perfect poached eggs I've ever seen. They are cooked to such perfection that they almost look fake. We live in the area so we wanted to try this place out. We sat down right away the bus boy brought us water and coffee. My husband went to drink the water and when he placed the cup down he noticed the other side had old lipstick on it still. To top that off it took over 15 minutes before a waiter decided to approach us. By then my husband was already mad and disgusted so we left. Poor service. So I feel like most of those stars are what my family would give this place. We go here often on the weekends just cause it's one of those friendly places with a simple menu and you know what to expect. I personally am not excited about the food, never really have been, which my mom and I debate about, so to each his own. But recently we went and enjoyed lunch. We stayed a while chatting over coffee (good coffee) and it dawned on me that the service here is on point, absolutely on point every time. Even when they are busy everyone is attentive, quick and friendly. And I want to end this review by giving a HUGE shout out to the one bus boy that's been working here for years. I am updating this neighborhood diner to five stars, based on two particular things. Obvious improvements, whatever they may be, in the kitchen and the server that identified herself as Misty. Both of these have contributed to making this provider of simple, honest food, in the tradition of the Chicago diner, upgraded from 4 to 5 stars. My major complaint in the past was breakfast was great but lunch/dinner sporadically good. Problem solved. AND Misty and her near telepathic bus-person have upgraded the service from good to great. You can get anything from eggs and toast to full chicken dinners here. This Americana diner has been here as long as I can remember. One of my favorites to get here is the chopped steak. It comes with Greek bread and sides. Their coffee is excellent and it is a favorite stop for Chgo. Policemen also. read more

It's a throwback diner. The food is pretty good. A huge menu to choose from and if you want a beer with your meatloaf dinner it's available.

What can I say? The Burgundy was my Mom and sister's best kept secret from me until my sis moved to a northern suburb. I move into the area and my Mom takes me here. Perfect day for a burger, fries...chili...ordered the Burgundy burger and it was unbelievable! Grilled green peppers, onions, crispy fries...nice 1/2 lb tasty meat on frickn' rye bread! Good coffee and a waitress that was almost too friendly( I can only take being called 'Honey' three times in a day). Will definitely be back for the chicken kabob! I'm not giving 5 stars because I'm still not sure I been to a diner in the city that deserves 100% on score but that's just me. To date though, it is my favorite diner in the city. Cozy old school diner feel! The people were friendly and the food was good. We got their gyro plate which was fantastic, it came with homemade fries (amazing) and a cup of soup that was ok, typical chicken noodle soup. Overall good place to go for a home cooked meal. read more

My boyfriend and I have been stopping in from time to time over the years. Never had a bad experience until just now. First, he ordered the chicken parm. It came out and it was what looked like boneless wings made into a kind of chicken parm dish. It was early in the morning so I understand if the cutlets had not been prepped, but some communication from our server would have been nice. ("We don't have cutlets ready, we can make it for you like this or would you like to order something else?") That can be overlooked. My boyfriend has a bad habit of handing the server his card without looking at the bill. I saw that the total had come out to $41 as the server was walking away to close us out. When he returned, I saw that the price for my short stack of French toast had been changed to $11. It said $6.99 on the menu.. and you could see that there was originally a 6 written with an 11 over top. He normally just hands the server his card without looking whenever we stop in so I have no idea if this is the first time it's happened. And don't know if the price was adjusted on anything else that we ordered. We usually tip really well too. I noticed the cook was the one who wrote up our bill. Pretty disappointed but we didn't make a fuss about it. Obviously they need it if they're willing to steal from their patrons. Wont be returning. read more

I used to go here when I lived in Portage Park many years ago. I moved to the burbs for ten years and now I'm back in Chicago. We went here last Saturday for breakfast. The waitress was outstanding and the food was even better. Priced very well I'm glad I tried the Burgundy again on a whim. They have a new customer again. I can't wait to try lunch and dinner. Came here with my family for lunch. It's an old spot. First the tables were leaning a little. Really to update the bathrooms really cheap soap and 30yrs old dryer. My food came and I thought it had a hair in it and Cheap bacon. Pretty good for a neighborhood diner. I've seen it around so I was curious. The wait staff was friendly although they did bounce me around a couple tables. I was okay with it though because it was Father's Day they wanted to maximize the space for their tables and I was waiting on my party so it was fine. Typical diner fare, but the food was pretty good. My husband had a corned beef hash which was really tasty and had a bit of a kick (not spicy just flavorful) that was memorable. I am kind of high maintenance when it comes to ordering, because I like everything a certain way, i.e. bacon crispy, omelette well-done, spinach fresh, not canned. I just like what I like. Anyway, I have three words about the Burgundy: HOMEMADE CORN BEEF HASH, okay four really. I am not southern, but I love homemade corn beef hash. I have not found it anywhere in Chicago, and believe me, I always ask. It is delicious. Along with the corn beef hash, they have great coffee, fresh OJ, great omelettes, pancakes excellent. I have not had a bad meal or bad service there. I even take out-of-towners here, and they love it. As far as breakfast goes in Chicago, this place is worth the drive west. read more

Called on mother's day to order for pick up at 830am and was told to call back in 5 mins so I waited and called back and was left on hold for 20 mins, no big deal I figured since they were prolly busy but no one came back to the line so since I wasn't far I drove over and notice 2 guys Waiting outside for thier order and I called again, was left on hold for another 20 mins and then hung up on, so I went to the window, still not upset trying to be understanding and told the guy I called 3 times and was hung up on, he explained they were busy and asked if I needed a menu, I said no I know what I want and he said hold on and went to the back... 30 mins later he still hadn't came back until he had one of the guys that was waiting order, at that time I asked if I could place my order and he said they were not taking any more orders and refused me and it was only 930am at this time. We still give this place 5 stars especially for this area. Atmosphere is always friendly and inviting. Food quality is continuously good. Portions are pretty decent. Wait staff - there is a high turnover rate but they are all friendly. Owners are almost always there and talk with everyone. If there is a true problem with the food - not a case of you just not liking it - they remedy it rapidly. They always have 3 different homemade soups on hand. Not the best I've had but not bad either. And pretty much any meal except for breakfast comes with a bowl - not a cup- of soup. This is a diner type place. It's not a steakhouse so don't expect that quality of steak but you aren't paying that kind of price either. This is an all American diner type fare. read more

It has been a long time since I have been here (and I live one block away). I am generously giving it 3 stars simply for it's relaxed atmosphere. The food is easily forgotten, the service only decent and the decor is, well, non-existent. But it was comfortable and relaxed inside. No one was in a rush, or rude. They didn't mind my husband and I just sitting and talking for an extra hour. So, for that it was nice. Perhaps the dish I ordered wasn't one of their best, or the drink I tasted was mixed incorrectly....
