Super friendly, helpful, attentive without hovering. The food: My Reuben was okay. Solid. Extra kraut, check. The french fries were crispy outside, moist inside, very good! Twelve years later and they're still here! A long running diner that simply exists. They aren't always open but they are always serving breakfast and lunch. If you are visiting Swedish hospital for any reason you would be hard pressed to find a hospital employee that would give a recommendation. But back in the day, say, twenty - thirty years ago, it was aaaalright. The diner is, what it presently is. And they could use a good cleansing & update. There is ancient dirt in some areas. The dining room is in poor condition but they're doing what they can. How's the food? The one breakfast dish that won our hearts was the chorizo (fiesta) skillet. Eggs your way, diced chorizo, jalapeños, green peppers, onions.. It was good and with a side of fluffy pancakes, yum! We also ordered some sandwiches but they missed their mark. I came over to Hilltop while a family member was in surgery. It's a great quiet place to wait and enjoy a meal. Pretty standard diner food. Quick and spot on customer service. I got the lemon ginger tea and Reuben. The Reuben came with chicken noodle soup and fries. The soup was pretty bland. However, the Reuben was great and came out with the hot fries. Haven't been here in ages, but I stopped in for a quick lunch today. Note that the hours posted on the outside of the building are not the same as their current hours. Went on Sunday 11/12/23 at 8:00am. Not one customer in the entire restaurant. Asked for coffee and an egg, sausage and cheese on an English muffin. Sandwich came without the sausage. Returned the sandwich which came back 2 minutes later. Asked waitress if the sausage was properly cooked as 2 minutes on a grilled seemed too quick for pork sausage. Waitress replied that cook is a professional cook. To which I replied that a simple order without anyone else in the restaurant forgetting the sausage I doubt that "professional cook" applies. A very good traditional to Chicago restaurant. Even the menu is like they were when I was young (50 years ago.) It is right across the street from Swedish Covenent Hospital. I had a burger. It was a good half pound as advertised. It was also good. I liked the old traditional breakfast menu and when I go back for my procedure I will try the breakfast items. The waitress was quick and efficient. She also very friendly and pleasant. I missed these corner places and am glad to find one still around . My only complaint was that their deserts were cakes. This place used to be great, though that was at least 10 years ago. Now it is a sub-par, empty shell with food so bad that kids won't eat it the waffles or pancakes. The menu says the breakfast ham is "of the bone" and I even asked the server if the ham is "off the bone" then he lied, and that became obvious when my plate came with two perfect semicircles of thin tasteless meat. This place is crap. It's a block from Swedish Hospital on California, so it ought to do good business. But at 10am on a Wednesday there were few diners. It's a breakfast and lunch place (closes at 3pm) and the menu has abundant selections of such food. I love biscuits and gravy, so I always get that at a new place. My husband ordered French toast. The server was friendly and there wasn't a big lag time before the food arrived. I asked for scrambled eggs with the biscuits, but they came out over easy. I complained, so the server took the plate back to correct the error. It wasn't long before the corrected plate came back, but when it did, it wasn't worth waiting for. I like scrambled eggs fluffy but these weren't by a long shot. It was flat, more like a plain omelette, and very greasy. The flavor was poor, like the greasy hash browns. The so-called "biscuits" weren't like any I've ever had. They were more like small hamburger buns, toasted. The gravy was inedible to my taste; it tasted rancid, like an ingredient had turned. I left the plate with most of the food on it, untouched. My husband's French toast were wide (or thick) slices of bread, basically toasted. The flavor was unremarkable and the maple syrup was unauthentic, probably plain corn syrup. The only good thing I had was the cup of hot chocolate, with whipped cream. The prices were inflated for the food quality. Next time I have an appointment at Swedish, I'll be eating in the hospital cafeteria if I'm hungry. read more

I recently tried Hilltop for breakfast with a pal on a Saturday morning. We were involved deeply in conversation, longtime friends catching up at spot we had both driven past dozens of times, but never tried. The service was okay, but we both left most of our breakfasts on the plate. The menus had only skillets, so we each got one. Hash browns were burned, not golden and over crisp (I like those), these were slow burned to bitterness that can only come from a grill that needs a scrub. They overpowered everything else. The corned beef hash was the worst kind of flavorless canned mush and the rye toast stale. We nibbled, and chatted over coffee for a while, but agreed that Hilltop was not worth another visit. I recently stopped in to the Hilltop our neighborhood diner again for breakfast with my daughter after a doctor's appointment and had a very nice experience and realized I've never given them a proper review! The host was accommodating and friendly and our server was equally friendly and attentive, excited to go back for lunch, they have great patty melts and shakes. This is a fairly typical family diner that is seemingly the only restaurant near Swedish Covenant Hospital. The Greek-style dishes (moussaka, spinach pie) are the best here, while diner faves like meat loaf and turkey are serviceable. The portions are large enough, so you may walk out with a doggie bag. Pregnant woman HUNGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Need food nooooooow. That was clearly what my Dude got from the frantic, starving look in my eyes. We only had 26 minutes between our midwife appointment and our childbirth class, both at Swedish Covenant. So, we frantically ran over to Hilltop and burst in the door. We wanted soup. It was all we had time for. We sat down and without really looking at the menu ordered two bowls of chicken noodle soup... extra bread, please. The soup came quick. It was hot. It was delicious. The bread was a little stale but beggars can't be choosers. Both our waitress and the woman working the counter were super nice and friendly and seemed to understand we were in a hurry. In less than 20 minutes, I had soup, bread, water and some smiles from the waitstaff... and was able to function through our class that night. Thanks, Hilltop! We'll be back! read more

Hilltop is the type of Chicago breakfast and lunch place that used to be in every neighborhood in Chicago. Familiar offerings, lots of coffee, and a couple of tv's running quietly by the kitchen. The waitress didn't call me "hon," but hey, it is the 2010's. Hilltop is located across the street from Swedish Covenant Hospital and Health Center. I imagine they get a lot of business from hospital visitors like me. I had to do blood and a few other tests in the morning that required me to have an empty stomach. By the time my business in the hospital was completed, I was more than ready to fill my stomach up. There are typical entrees that this kind of restaurant should always do well. I ordered a vegetable omelet -- no cheese -- with hash brown potatoes. The omelet was cooked well, not burned at all. Omelets should not be hard and brown because they were left in the pan too long. This one was cooked appropriately. It was stuffed with vegetables; surprisingly, there were more mushrooms than peppers or onions. That's fine with me. In my mind, the egg part of the omelet exists only to hold the vegetables together. The hash browns could've stayed a little longer in the skillet. Parts were browned properly, but more parts were a little soggy. There wasn't much flavor in the omelet or the hash browns. I doused both considerably with Cholula hot sauce. The cup of coffee was bottomless. That's exactly as it should be. The few other customers at the time looked to be retirees, sitting back with massive servings, eating with one hand and holding their print newspapers with the other hand. That's one sign of a neighborhood place, friends. The old folks need to be comfortable here. Hilltop was okay. Would I go again? Sure. Would Hilltop be a destination place, the kind you tell your friends "OMG, it was SO GOOD, we have to go there!!" Not at all. It's basic, it's simple, it's unassuming. I even asked if I should go someplace else, considering how close it was to closing. I was informed by the very polite busboy that as I was in the restaurant, all customers would be served - the closing time was when they stopped admitting customers, but not service for those already here. The only reason for me to eat here is that it's between home and work, And I like diners. Or should I say, "family restaurants," as the full name of this establishment is Hilltop Family Restaurants. So I've stopped here a few times. Meh. Food ranges from okay to not great. Today was not great. Coffee, which should be a staple, was weak. Corned beef hash seemed to be from a can. Two eggs over easy came out looking more sunny side up, and had one broken yolk. Hash browns were barely beige. Toast was room temperature. There is only one way to have room temperature toast, and that is to not make it to order. How can you not make toast to order? Shove it in the toaster, hit the lever, you're done. There seem to be a lot of regulars here, which should indicate quality, Maybe they get better food than I do. The one cool thing about this place is the old-timey cigarette rack behind the cashier. Labeled "Winston," but filled with Marlboros. Hey, you can't smoke 'em here anyway, so what's the difference? read more

You know, I once saw a YouTube video where Kirk Cameron and someone that looked like post-op Chastity Bono talking about the miracles that are bananas. I might put that in the top 5 of strangest experiences ever for me. I also might put the fact that I liked this diner on that list too. I am not a "diner" person. They don't have them where I grew up and so I don't get the whole concept. I will go when the Midwesterners I am with are having a major jones, or if I am feeling poor or there is nothing else close by. So, even though I don't get the appeal, for some reason I kind of enjoy the Hilltop. Don't get me wrong, the pink decor, the clientele that is comprised of only people 95 years and up and the fact that beef liver is one of the offered entrees are not assets. But they do add to the overall entertainment of the joint. And if you order a "dinner" you will get so much goddamned food you will have enough for you, your dog and 3 homeless people because you get bread, a salad, a GIANT entree, and dessert. And all this costs something stupid like $8. I ate two bites of the entree (turkey and mashed potatoes) and was full, which made the waitress sad, but hey, thats what they invented "to go" boxes for. Oh there is also some guy that appears to be a regular there, who wears a giant, super-fake looking pompadour of a wig. Which is awesome and another reason to give 4 stars to the Hilltop. read more

I love pancakes. Sleep hates me. Thus there are many nights where I don't sleep and have cravings of early morning pancakes. So, I now have a semi-weekly meeting with a girlfriend to chat and have my fill of pancakes. This place is the perfect diner. It's décor is classic diner. The waitress calls you hon and starts to recognize faces after a few repeat visits. There's no fake sugar on the table. Food is fried in butter. It just doesn't get much better than this when it comes to diners. And if you don't like it just shut up and go somewhere else, b/c I love it and I'd like to keep it how it is. read more

Great diner option on the northside! We frequent Hilltop on Sundays for their yummy omlettes and gyro plate, which my fiance loves (and he's Greek, so he knows his gyros). The place is owned by Greeks, as are many Chicagoland diners, and for my fiance it brings back memories of the diner his father owned in Elmwood Park in the 80's. Very friendly service -- you can tell that it is family owned and operated. The food is your basic diner options, but everything we've had tat Hilltop has been fresh and prepared with care. Coffee is decent and replenished often. The menu is pretty huge, but I'd say stick to the basics -- egg dishes, gyro plate, club sandwiches, etc. Prices are reasonable. It's cash only, so don't forget your greenbacks. They do have a small parking lot in back, which is handy for the area. Street parking can be found as well. Since Augie's closed in Andersonville, this is one of the closest diner options for us, so when I'm hankering for some greasy eggs and coffee in a non frou-frou environment, I head here. read more
