    Meatloaf Entree
    Nick R.

Traditional diner with a big menu. Smaller space than I expected, the service was friendly. The entrees were plentiful, and included soup. My beef and barley soup was beautifully homey. My meatloaf was good as well, although the gravy was a bit strange. Orange/red tinged with a faint tomatoey taste. Everyone else enjoyed their food. Fresh squeezed OJ was a hot with some, as was the hot chocolate. Prices were great for the portions.

We came around 1pm on a Saturday without a reservation. The place was pretty full with only a few booths remaining. I ordered delivery from here before, but dining in is the way to go. The food comes hot. Alexander's skillet was delicious. My over easy eggs were done perfectly. I only wish there was a little bit more veggies like the green pepper. I also ordered a small fresh squeezed orange juice. Definitely tasted fresh squeezed, but the small cup is the smallest cup I've ever had. I don't recommend the small size. The large might be okay. I would come back to try the other skillets they have on the menu! The service is great here. They check on you often and make sure your water and coffee is never low.

Ordered eggs over easy and this is what I got. Not the first time unfortunately. Especially frustrating because I paid extra for a third egg.

Ended up here because Honeybear is basically impossible to get to but I'm so glad I ended up at Alexander's. Who needs Honeybear cafe and their 1+ hr wait when Alexander's is just a mile down the road and our wait was just 15 mins tops? They have a really great $11.11 deal where you get coffee, juice, pancakes, eggs, hash browns, and a meat of your choice. It's $1 for toppings but I only had 3 slices of strawberries BUT I'm not even mad because I got so much for $11.11. The service was so great and I enjoyed my time there. The music was great and I felt like I had a really nice diner experience. Loved it 10/10

The food here always slaps and the staff is always really nice. 10/10 perfect cozy diner.

Alexander's is a hidden gem that I discovered via Yelp. I was randomly searching for a new breakfast place and came across Alexander's. I can attest that the reviews for this place is warranted. The inside of the restaurant is large enough to accommodate multiple groups of four. They also have a lot of solo sitting at the countertop. During my initial visit I went during one of the busiest times in the morning and I didn't have to wait too long to be seated. Even if it is busy the staff are a well oiled machine in which they quickly get the food out, clear tables, and get out the to-go orders. It's impressive to witness because they are very busy. Our waitress was very friendly even though so was swamped with tables. I will say that due to Alexander's being so busy the staff has to wear many hats. Our waitress towards the end of our dining experience had to be flagged down to get our bill because she was wrapping silverware. I commend the staff for staying positive instead of getting frustrated. The pancakes are really tasty. I normally don't like a lot of pancakes from diners but they were surprisingly tasty. They didn't feel like pre-frozen pancakes. The skillet was jam packed with meat. At first I thought it was light on meat until I lifted the egg and realized the meat had mostly shifted to one side. The quality of the skillet wasn't anything to phone home about but they give you enough food to easily have two meals. I really liked the homemade orange juice, it was fresh tasting.

I stopped into this diner because of a recommendation from the shop a few doors down while I waited for them to finish on my car. The food was excellent. I got the $11.11 special in the window and man the pancakes were super fluffy and soft! I thought the bacon was a little too overdone but the sausage was great!! It's a cute diner with a homey no frills feel to it with friendly service. I will definitely be back!

    REUBEN HEAVEN!

I freaking LOVE Reuben sandwiches. LOVE. Tried one here. So good. Came out quickly, and made me very, very happy. Perfect proportions of kraut to meat AND 1000 island dressing. Buttery rye and gooey Swiss cheese. It was not one of those overdone, giant sandwiches that make you feel bloated after eating. This one was a nice size, but not too big - I am not a fan of overstuffed American plates. Comes with a pickle and a slice of tomato, just so you can get some plant matter in ya. BUT that Reuben! It was yummy. My BF had a Patty Melt, and it was also very tasty - done to order, medium rare. The stand out, though, was the Lentil soup! Usually lentil soup can be bland, but this was not! Slightly tangy, and a good sized bowl. I'd come back just for this. Fantastic, friendly staff. Said their food was made with love, and it shows. Simple interior, somewhat threadbare, but spotlessly clean and with a lot of character. Bathrooms spotlessly clean. Nice touch of a hand washing sink outside the toilet room - I always like that. Am anxiously awaiting their new outpost on Montrose, as it's closer to me. YAY! Will be back, though!

This is my first time eating at this restaurant and I definitely recommend. The portions are large so be prepared to eat or put some away for later. We ordered via food delivery and my child got the pancakes and bacon. We got a side of hash brown potatoes and a build your own skillet with some raisin toast. Again the portions were enough for 2-3 people to eat off the skillet with seconds on the side of potatoes. The food was delicious and we recommend this restaurant.

(Sides were a tiny cup of cole slaw and a tiny cup of sliced bananas and strawberries.) I know all about food inflation, but that's simply unacceptable. The wait staff is friendly, and it's not their fault, but the cooks seem to get the orders wrong a lot. On my first try, they gave me a grilled cheese with avocado and forgot the tomato. When I pointed this out, the cook simply peeled back the tiny sandwich and added some sad looking cold tomato slices. Ridiculous. I explained to the server (again, not her fault) that the flavor comes from the tomato being grilled WITH the sandwich. Never going back to this place.

I ordered the daily special French toast, added fruit and pecans, plus a side of bacon. The French toast was absolutely massive and could easily be shared. My only complaint was the $3.75 charge for pecans, which felt a little steep for the amount included. Overall, the food was good, the diner atmosphere was exactly what I was hoping for, and there's something special about dining in such a historic Chicago institution. I would assume a place where the newest thing since the 1980s is the security camera would have vinyl with more cracks and patina than my trusty old leather jacket! But no, it's in fantastic shape. Especially given that, the vibe in here is awesome! It's like stepping through a time-portal. For food, I ordered an old favorite: Pigs in Blankets. The food came out fast, though, to be fair, there was only one other person dining in at the time. The sausage links were crisp, and the pancakes were lightly sweet and fluffy. All in all, great! While perhaps not enough to summon the Michelin Guide inspectors, it was better than the average greasy spoon. Finally, I really appreciate that the prices are reasonable, and that there is parking! Final verdict: I've had a small handful of spectacular breakfasts. I've also had criminal breakfasts, where two unsalted eggs, two bacon strips, and a tablespoon of potatoes costs $14.95. Golden House Restaurant & Pancake House finds itself in that sweet spot in between - it is neither a spectacular spot (often have prices to boot), nor is it an overpriced, underwhelming greasy spoon that stays in business thanks to regulars who have been coming for decades and don't want anything better.

Vibes inside are excellent and drinks are (very) boozy with a variety of booths, tables, and bar seating available. Burger with Egg and Bacon (4.25/5): Look, this is a great burger. Bacon is melt in your mouth and the egg adds a bit of creamy richness on top of the fatty, salty beef and cheese combo. The bread bun is pillowy, but I wouldn't wait in a line for hours for this. Bone Marrow (10/5): Now I would wait in line for hours for this bone marrow dish that absolutely changed my life. This comes with 4 HUGE pieces of bone marrow that you spread over fluffy, perfectly toasted Texas toast and pair with a beef cheek marmalade that exactly rides the line between sweet and savory. If you come here without ordering this, you're missing out big time. Green Salad (4/5): Nice, fresh and I needed some fiber. Nothing mind blowing, but a good change of pace. Crispy Fries (4/5): Very lightly crispy fries (reminiscent of light well for the west coasters), but the sauces are where this shines. Garlic aioli and mornay sauce (think white gravy) were rich, thick, and excellent! Key Lime Pie (4.25/5): Whipped cream on this INCREDIBLE, wish you could just order a bowl of that. I think they serve it slightly warmer than fridge temp (cool not cold) and it just melts on the tongue with really strong vanilla flavor. Pie itself is also good; nice strong tartness with the buttery and salty crust. Mille-Feuille (4.5/5): Chocolate sauce has a nice depth of flavor with the shattering crisp of the pastry. Pastry cream was a lot thicker than I expected, but super rich and delicious. Definitely a dessert to share.
