It's one of the best plazas in Atlanta. You could spend weeks here, eating at a different place for lunch and dinner every day, and never eat at the same place twice. Every major city should have plazas like this. Atlanta is very fortunate to have the Asian Square.

Asian Square is an old Asian shopping center located on Buford Highway between Chamblee Tucker Rd…read more and I-285 in Doraville. My earliest memories of Asian Square are from Fall 2000, when I first moved to Atlanta. Back then (actually, since 1993), and up until circa 2010, Asian Square was home to a 99 Ranch Market, a popular Chinese supermarket chain from California. Times changed and bigger, newer Asian grocery stores opened in nicer, cleaner shopping complexes up north (e.g. Super H Mart, GreatWall, Assi), forcing 99 Ranch to close its only Georgia location. Asian Square was also home to restaurants such as Pho Hoa (Vietnamese noodle soup), Asiana Garden (Korean BBQ), a Thai restaurant, Fil-Am Star (one of metro Atlanta's only Filipino restaurants), and Hello Dau Hu (a Vietnamese snack shop which has since been absorbed into fellow Buford Highway competitor Viet Tofu ~Spring 2014). Those were just a handful of businesses that closed at Asian Square over approximately the past 15 years. These days, the main draws at Asian Square are undoubtedly Sweet Hut Bakery & Cafe (Asian pastries and bubble tea), Quoc Huong (Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches and pho), and, to a lesser extent, Ming's BBQ and BBQ Corner (Chinese, Cantonese food). Sweet Hut opened in April 2012 and became wildly successful. It brought people flocking back to Asian Square... Well, one tiny corner of it. Mamak, a Malaysian restaurant, opened September 2014 in the former Fil-Am space. Quoc Huong is considered by many to have the best banh mi sandwiches in Atlanta. I can't say I disagree. They are pretty darn good. Ming's BBQ has been around forever. Honestly, I'm surprised it's still around. Ming's is hidden towards the back of the shopping center, near the Shallowford Rd. entrance/exit. Ming's boasts quick and authentic plates of Cantonese-style street food, complete with fresh roasted pork on display and roasted duck hanging behind the storefront window. Ming's has a second, bigger, much newer location off of Pleasant Hill Rd. in Duluth (Gwinnett County). I ate at BBQ Corner several times in the early-to-mid 2000s. They served satisfying Chinese food and had dim sum service at one point too. In late 2013/early 2014, the restaurant temporarily closed and underwent a major renovation. As of 2014, BBQ Corner is back with a new storefront, a new dining room, and a new attitude. The four aforementioned restaurants presumably make up the bulk of Asian Square customer traffic today. Currently, I believe there are no more Korean-owned businesses at Asian Square. I think all of the businesses are owned or operated by either Chinese or Vietnamese people. King Maxim Nail Supply opened in a substantial space (I think part of the old 99 Ranch Market) in 2014. There are a lot of nail salon supply stores along Buford Highway and King Maxim adds another to the mix. Victoria Nail Supply is a smaller shop, also located at Asian Square. Other businesses include Bride & Fashion II (dresses), Kim Ngoc Jewelry, Eye Best / La Mejor Vision (optometrist's office and eyeglass frames store), Jimmy's Fine Jewelry, Vietnamese coffee shop Duy Long, Hair Capital (hair salon), The Gioi Am Nhac (Vietnamese video/music store I believe), Le Salon (another salon), ABF Travel (Chinese travel agency), Victoria Cosmetics, a dentist's office, a pediatric clinic, Asian herbal medicine shops, and more. Asian Square, as a functional shopping center, is simply outdated. It's not the cleanest shopping center nor is it modern or aesthetically pleasing. The storefronts and store spaces are worn and parking is a real issue here. The driveways are tight and the speed bumps are annoying, but necessary. It's been years and the void left by 99 Ranch's closure has yet to be filled. I heard from an Asian Square business owner that parking was one of the biggest challenges in trying to secure a tenant for that space. It makes sense when you look at other Asian shopping centers around town (and you don't have to look far). In the end, I am a fan of Asian Square. I've got several memories here. The place has character and it's a recognized "landmark" of sorts for the Asian community in Atlanta, especially those who have lived here a long time. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for this place. (Sweet Hut definitely helped!)

When I got it home and opened it, the pressed powder was broken. No big deal, MAC is great about standing behind their products. I went into the store and when I got there, the sales associate was on the phone. Being a frequent shopper, I'm friendly with the staff at MAC and on a first name basis with people at Sephora a few doors down. I casually got the bag out to point and indicate I'm here with an item I purchased and grabbing a replacement (trying to serve myself as much as I could, I wasn't demanding instant attention). She really abruptly and with a sharp tone said something like "HOLD ON JUST A MINUTE MA'AM" and went into the back. Then she talked to someone delivering something and signed off on it. Finally, she got to me. I explained the situation and she said "It's final sale. No exchanges." I said that certainly cannot be the case, it's damaged and I just want the exact same product. She got ruder and ruder while insisting that the register WOULD NOT EVEN LET HER exchange a damaged final sale product (which is an outright lie). I was like "Okay, so can you damage it out and give me another one." She laughed at me and said she wouldn't do that and I would need to PURCHASE another. I asked her "What's going on? You've had an attitude with me since I walked in the door." She insisted she did not and it was my problem. Her tone and absolute refusal to work with me say otherwise. She again insisted she could not exchange a damaged final sale item. I said I was going to call customer service and again, her tone was really rude as she offered to give me the number. "I'll give it to you myself!" I called the number and was waiting on hold. Another associate walked in and I thought maybe I could work with her. I started explaining the situation and Shari interjected loudly "SHE'S JUST A FREELANCER SHE CAN'T HELP YOU." At this point I'm really frustrated. I've been shopping at MAC since I was a teenager for 25+ years and I have never had someone treat me so rudely. Her whole attitude was "I refuse to help you, you're wrong about your assumptions, if you don't like it, call corporate." I know MAC's final sale policy does not apply to damaged items and that within 30 days the item can be replaced. I'm on hold with the 800 number. I describe what's going on. The rep says she can accept the exchange. I tell her so. Shari starts the exchange. She asks for my receipt. I aks her to please look it up under my rewards, I just got it yesterday. She either rolled her eyes and/or groaned, something that conveyed annoyance. At that point, she switches from a rude attitude to over the top, sarcastically polite. She finishes the transaction and says something like "NOW YOU JUST HAVE AN ABSOLUTELY BLESSED DAY, MISS SARAH." I said something to the effect of "You know it's free to not be rude" and she kept saying that blessed day sentence over and over again. I admit, on my way out I said I was calling corporate to which she responded "I'll be looking forward to it!" What the hell? Shari was the rudest, most uncooperative, most reactionary and escalatory salesperson I have EVER had and she'd be lucky to hold down a job at a fart factory.

I have worked retail - a lot of it at various different stages. It is not always fun. I'm sorry they hate working retail so much but that's not my fault and I was nothing but respectful to the both of them. I just wanted them to honor what I had already been told by customer service. This was an absurd and un professional way to treat anyone much less a customer and as a result I likely am no longer a MAC customer.

I was a manager at one of the locations, and most days I absolutely loved my job...Yes, it was retail, and yes, it was in the mall...But I got paid to give people make overs!!! Facials, Skin-Care Consultations, and Color...I was hooked! I was actually very good at selling cosmetics! It's not hard to sell the crap out of something that you absolutely love!!! I now sell softare, and lets just say...Although I'm great at my job, I dont really have the passion that I had for my ORIGINS products! I absolutely love the creative package, product names, & product quality. I was spoiled over the years, as I worked here during college...And now, I'm addicted to the stuff!! No more maybeline or Revlon for me!!! The ORIGINS product line is made from ingredients that are derived from the earth. They claim to not use any artificial colors, scents, or frangrances. I have never seen proof of this, but just knowing what I know about shelf-life...I dont think you could really consider it "all natural" Nonetheless...Women and men flock to these little cosmetics boutiques...Working here, I saw woman after woman lay down some serious cash-o-la for the likes of these products. It's definitely not a mainstream cosmetics line, but they definitely have their loyal customers. It's specialty cosmetics at their finest. And Yes, I am one of those loyal followers! Origins provides a full line of skin care, bath and body care, cosmetics, sensory therapy, hair care, and men's products. Men, I cannot stress this enough...Go here during Christmas and have the sales manager put together a special gift basket...This is not your typical Bath and Body store...Their specialty is gift giving, and their gift wrap is pretty extraordinary, special and free! When I was scanning in an app called Shopkick, which is designed to bring business into the store as well as reward customers who are buying certain supplements in the store, the female manager in a disagreeable manner told me that no scanning was allowed in the store per corporate policy. I knew this was not true as I had been in touch with Shopkick previously and they said that both the stores and the supplement companies participate. At this time the supplement pure encapsulations was on Shopkick so I was scanning that item. The manager, then removed all of the product from the shelves with a small sign saying to come to the front to get the product but left the barcodes. When I continued to scan the barcodes, she marked them out with magic marker so that they could not be scanned. The next time I came in the store there was no evidence that they were ever there and when I inquired if the store carried pure encapsulations, I was told that they had sold out by the employees that worked for the manager, but I told them that that was impossible because I saw how much stock they had before the manager removed them from the shelves. I have notified corporate Vitamin Shoppe, Pure Encapsulations, and shopkick of this strange behavior by the manager who has no problem telling her employees to lie to customers. I am an integrative holistic MD who used to refer people to this vitamin Shoppe for supplements. This vindictive behavior by the manager is something I honestly have never seen by any other employee or manager of any retail outlet that participates with Shopkick. Since many different brands participate with Shopkick at the Vitamin Shoppe, I am curious to see if she will remove all of the other brands when they have scans available in the app.
