I have been taking my Miniature Schnauzer here since she was 7 weeks old. This place is THE BEST around and I'll NEVER take my girl anywhere else. It's often busy but they move quickly. They greet you as soon as you walk in the door and get you checked in. It's not a 'State of the Art' Vet Clinic and looks like an old country clinic which is fantastic to me because it is a comfortable atmosphere. When we moved to Burnet County ten years ago we were worried about finding the same caliber vet we used at Graef Vet in Taylor. It was a long drive from Round Rock and pretty much out of the question from here in Granite Shoals. We have used Dr McBride since we saw Yelp reviews about the kind of vet he is. It's all true. Dr. McBride is a Texas A&M graduate vet who has been in business since the 1970's. He is well known all over the area, excellent at his practice and people from miles around travel just to allow him to take care of their pets as well as livestock. He doesn't even need to be practicing any longer, but he loves animals so much that he continues on. The building he occupies needs help, but people overlook that aspect of the overall practice when they get the excellent treatment and pricing that Dr. McBride offers. Just be aware that the practice is always closed from noon till 1PM daily for lunch, no exceptions. read more

Dr. McBride may be rough, he talks to you plain that's for sure, but he is very good and knows what he's doing and he's the type of veterinarian a rancher needs. They work with ranches on livestock so that the cost is not tremendous. Other vet clinics charge at least three times more to see a farm animal. Keeping the cost low is what helps us ranchers be able to keep doing what we're doing. I really appreciate Dr. McBride, I've never had a complaint about the vets that work here or the staff. I don't know what we are going to do when Dr. McBride retires. I hope he can find a good replacement. read more

We were at our lake house in Buchanan dam. My 13 year King Cavalier after research was in stage 4 chronic heart failure Saturday morning. I called their office around 10 other vets around the area were closed and they were open until 12. The receptionist answered I explained that I thought my baby was dying no I'm so sorry nothing. Whats your name and phone number I'll have the vet call you. Dan McBride aka dr McBride I explain what going on and he tells me to say goodbyes and you will probably find her dead in a hallway. I said I don't want her to suffer and he informed me he had a meeting to go to and If I was bringing her in I needed to bring her now because I cannot miss my meeting and I did you a favor calling you back. I said I can't make this decision he said well I'm leaving at 1130 you need to leave now or call me right back. I hung up. My baby passed away early this morning on a pallet with her favorite blanket in her home surrounded by her family. This man was rude and unsympathetic. Took my Gdog in for vaccines. He is a 6 pound Yorkie. The Tech was so experienced he never flinched or made a sound even while completing his heartworm test. He also was very relaxed & calm like he knew he was safe there. They were very organized and friendly. Obviously the pets come first there! I am doing two reviews, one for those in a hurry and one for those who have a little time. #1 Review Dr. McBride is an excellent veterinarian, who has been taking care of animals since graduating from A&M in 1973! He is a smart, compassionate and affordable veterinarian! He will not take advantage of your ignorance or emotions. He takes his time with patients and takes the time to really educate pet owners on how to care for their animals. He has professional, polite staff and other vet/s that work at the clinic but since I have not used them I can not comment about them. Dr. McBride is a real gem and worth the drive to Burnet! #2 Review Q. Why would someone who lives in Austin drive an hour to Burnet to see a vet? A. Because this man is an amazing animal doctor who gives great care to animals and does NOT take advantage of their owners by overcharging them especially when their animals are in crisis!!! Our curious cat was bit by a Rattle snake but we didnt know this. After figuring out he had something major going on we took him to a popular Austin Pet Clinic not far from our home. We were told it wasnt a snake bite upfront but after two more hours and lots of expensive test, well guess what boys and girls, it WAS a snake bite, a Rattle snake! This diagnosis cost us almost 300 dollars. This is when it gets good. The vet goes on to tell us that treatment would cost between $1,500 to $2,000.00 on average. Cost could go higher and there is no guarantee that the cat will live after you have spent this sum of money. I was shocked asked if there was anything else that could be done and I was told no! The pressure is on, greedy and or stupid vet infront of me, dying cat and a child with tears running down her face beside me. I said I needed some time, paid the bill and left. We called several Austin pet hospitals and everyone confirmed the cost and they all wanted payment upfront, no payment plans cash or credit upfront today! Feeling scared and afraid for our cat we decided to call a vet who is rural and more likely to deal with rattle snake bites. We found Dr. McBride's clinic. We called and his office was closed. The message said all messages are forwarded to his cell but we really did not think he would call, we were wrong. Dr. McBride called us back, he listened to our problem and he told us what to do. After treating our cat and essentially saving his life we were billed an incredibly reasonable sum. A good bit of what he did to help us was free of charge! Even though this doctor had never treated our animals before he dealt with us fairly and compassionately. He has just become the vet for our cat and 2 dogs! read more

They charged me an exam fee when they refused to examine my dog because it isnt comfortable around people. I had a urine test run, and they charged me $140.00 to simply do that. The vet told me he thought my dog needed help right away (surgery and would need to stay overnight at least), but when he saw she was anxious around people, he refused to examine her (yet I was still charged), gave me antibiotics and said to call Monday if it wasnt better. He knew right away something was up, but sent me home anyway. I later in the day had to go to another vet for emergent surgery for my dog who could have died if this had gone on any longer. Worst experience with a vet so far. If you value your animals, do not send them here. read more

My dog had a Perianal Tumor and needed it removed along with being Neutered. I had never met Dr. McBride before, but decided to call and see if they could fit him in for surgery. Our previous vet said he didn't do those types of surgeries and recommended someone else. Seeing as this was an emergency, Dr. McBride fit him in the next day for a consult and surgery. He's very knowledgeable and a life saver, literally. He was booked solid but said he would have him ready by late afternoon. I haven't picked up my dog yet, but I'm positive he's okay now and healthy. read more

His staff is overworked in a good way in that they take in so many immediate emergencies from farms animals to domestic cases. His ONLY concern is your animal not your feelings. He is very old school with many decades of experience which I'll take over a rookie who just graduated and is going step by step out of a manual or to make a profit. I was quoted 4k in austin for my dog's procedure and was performed here for just over 1500. It was worth the 75 minute drive. I'll be back with all my animals until this man retires. Everytime I have called or tried to set up an appointment, a woman named Sue is rude, talks to me like I'm an idiot, is extremely sarcastic, always on the defense and never seems to give a crap what you're going through... it's not important to her! Wish they would fire her already, she is nothing but a pain and I've almost left the place because of her. She has been rude to me every time I've talked to her, even in person. Grew up going to see these folks. No lie, this is not a tall tale...I saw a dude bring his dog that got hit by a car in to Dr. McBride in a bag...dog was hanging on by a thread and Dr. McBride saved that dog! He has saved numerous cows, goats and dogs for us. Now, REAL TALK moment here: no, he's not the loving huggy feelings type, but you know what...I don't care because he cares about the animals. He will save your animals and save you money! He's old school and awesome. I've worked with Dr. Kyle a little bit and he is a bit more personable and has all the same fabulous skills. These folks know whats up and you are in good hands. I wish I didn't live so far away because I would TOTALLY take my animals there if I could. Unable to hold appointments. Did not take proper care of our animal. They are apparently overwhelmed. Did not even treat our animal by the time we picked him up 5pm after a 2pm scheduled appointment. I believe they have slipped in the last two years or so. Used to be our go to. We will not return. Receptionist is unprofessional and on several occasions very rude. Last thing you want to deal with when you are concerned for you family member. Unacceptable. Made me sad to write this because Dr. Mcbride is awesome, but might need to make some changes in staff asap. read more

I was happy with Burnet Vet Clinic until my last visit with my senior chihuahua. Her good eye was bothering her to the extent that she was keeping it closed all the time. I adopted her about a year ago with knowing that she had only one good eye. The clinic was able to fit me in. We had discussed her eye and that another vet she had seen thinks she may have glaucoma and we needed to watch out for that. She was prescribed neopolydex eye drops. When the neopolydex wasn't working after seven days, I called back up to the clinic and they said I could pick up the glaucoma drops for her. After a few days on these drops, she still wasn't getting relief. I called up to the clinic and asked how long it would take for the glaucoma drops to start working. They said "at least a week". That didn't sound right to me so I made an appointment for her with an eye specialist. I'm glad I listened to my gut. I learned that she doesn't have glaucoma and that the drops should have not been prescribed to her by Burnet Vet Clinic without testing the eye pressure first. I also learned that if she had glaucoma, she would have seen relief within 24 hours of using the drops that were prescribed, not "almost a week" which is what I was told by Burnet Vet Clinic. She had an ulcerated cornea that was infected. This was very apparent after her eye was stained by the eye specialist (which Burnet Vet Clinic did not do). Thankfully, she is on the right medications and has improved dramatically. I am very disappointed with Burnet Vet Clinic and feel that there was not enough diagnostic work done during the exam to ensure that she was on the correct meds and that they prescribed glaucoma meds without testing her eye pressure. The vet just looked at it for a few seconds before prescribing the wrong meds. Not only did she suffer with this for two weeks because they had given her the wrong meds, she could have lost the only good eye that she has if I had not listened to my gut and got her into a clinic that actually knew what they were doing. read more

Dr. Dan McBride is an Angel on this earth. He and his staff have been caring for my son's dogs for 15 years and we've never been disappointed in their care. Dr. McBride saved my son's (Jamie's) dog's life, literally. After a horrible accident where Tia, my son's Border Collie/Lab mix, was run over by a pickup hauling a boat, we were given the horrible news that Tia probably wouldn't make it due to a severely shattered right front leg, crushed pelvic bones and possible internal injuries. Given the extensive surgeries and care she would need, my son told Dr. Atkinson at 8:30 the next morning that he couldn't afford to pay for this due to his being on disability and having no other income. Having already made cremation arrangements with Dr. Atkinson, Jamie was startled when Dr. McBride called to tell him he couldn't put Tia down. "This dog wants to live," he told Jamie. "She's looking at me and smiling and wagging her tail like she's saying 'Please don't.' Dr. McBride then told him what had happened. He said he went into the exam room with the euthanasia syringe in his shirt pocket. When he bent over the table to pet Tia, the syringe fell out of his shirt and shattered on the concrete floor. Dr. McBride's phone rang, he answered it and went back to his office for another syringe. When he came back once again to administer the shot, his nurse looked at him and said, "You know why that fell out of your shirt, don't you?" That's when he saw Tia looking up at him, and when he called Jamie at 4:00 in the afternoon. Shocked because he thought Tia had already been put down, with tears in his eyes, Jamie once again said "I can't afford her care, doctor." That Angel of a man told my son, "It won't cost you anything. I'm doing this because I know she loves you and you love her." That man did everything in his power to save Tia's shattered front leg and stabilize her pelvic bones. After a month of tireless, amazing care it was decided that Tia's leg wasn't healing and must come off. Again, Dr. McBride told Jamie, "She loves you and I know how much you love her." Today, almost 4 months after her horrible ordeal, Tia is a joyful 3-legged fur baby loving on her Daddy and gleefully running in her huge fenced back yard. Dr. McBride is indeed a wonderful, knowledgeable, loving man who has surrounded himself with a team of amazingly competent and loving staff members. Everyone who came into contact with Tia and Jamie were supportive and caring. How we can ever thank Dr. McBride for his kindness, care and love is beyond my capacity to comprehend. Something that Dr. McBride was never told is that Jamie is a brain tumor survivor who suffered both emotional and physical damage from its removal 26 years ago. He was only given a 5-year possibility of survival after his surgery but, praise God, he is still with us and, thanks to Dr. McBride, so is his Tia. We're forever in your debt, Dr. Dan McBride! read more

I took my 19+ yr old cat in today for a urinary tract infection (UTI) as a walk in. She is normally in excellent health and had exact symptoms 3 yrs ago so I had a good idea what was wrong. I had never been to the Clinic before. We had to wait less than an hour even though we did not have an appt and based on her signs and symptoms, Dr. Kyle diagnosed and treated her for a UTI. She and I were so happy that I did not have to leave her there for additional testing. She is already responding to the antibiotic and her appetite has returned. I am so appreciative the patient's age and emotional impact are considered when providing treatment. Last time she had these symptoms, the vet bill was triple that what I paid today and I got lectured about not brushing my 17 y.o cat's teeth.... I highly recommend this Clinic. read more

I was very disappointed with my experience with Burnet Veterinary Clinic. I recently moved to the area and needed to connect with a vet for my three dogs. Due to covid (not their fault) the process was difficult, but manageable. We sat in the car and the assistant came out to get the dogs. I had all of their old charts, along with a written sheet of what I needed. The vet never even poked his head out of the door. We were informed that they all needed new heartworm tests, which I thought was reasonable. They told us they recommended a specific kind of heartworm medication was needed, which we agreed to, and we also requested an oral flea and tick medication. They didn't carry the Bravecto that the dogs had, but I accepted their recommendation. At this point, the told us that they were out of stock of all of the medications. I asked them if they would then write a prescription for the dogs, and we would fill it at Costco or Pet meds. They told us that they charged $10 extra per dog for a written prescription. This seemed odd, considering that they couldn't provide the medication. All in all, I got no warm fuzzies, had no idea who the vet was as he apparently didn't even have time to poke his head out. Additionally, they told us that because we were going to fill our prescriptions online, we would need to pay for heartworm tests again next year as they couldn't monitor whether we had given it to them. It seems if you can't provide the medication, you are simply gouging the clients for more money, and seems very wrong. read more

We found this clinic through a vet tech from another clinic when we brought in a feral cat that has lived in our backyard since birth, about 11 months. Someone decided to use him as target practice with a .22. He had been shot in the leg. Unfortunately his leg had to be amputated. Dr. McBride tried to save his leg by using a pin but the bone was too badly damaged. We are very grateful for his efforts and the awesome job! The dedication he and his staff showed to our cat was nothing short of outstanding! I can only imagine the care they show their other animals must be just as awesome. The clinic kept him for 4 days until they felt he had recovered enough before allowing him to come home. We are happy he is now home. I had a terrific experience with Dr. Dan McBride at the Burnet Veterinary Clinic. I called Dr. McBride because my dog, Poco, had some swelling around her face (I hadcalled the Vet I normally go to, and they said they were too busy to see Poco that day). I described Poco's symptoms to the vet technician, and she put Dr. McBride on the phone. I recited the symptoms to him, and he said you need to get here right now. I headed off to Burnet immediately. When we got to his office, Dr. McBride saw us immediately. Apparently Poco had been stung by a wasp or a bee, and had a fairly severe allergic reaction. Dr. McBride and his entire staff were very caring, and knew just what to do. I felt extremely well taken care of, and Poco is feeling much better. Needless to say, we will be going to Dr. McBride from now on for both of our dogs. read more

I called Burnet Vet Clinic on Sept 21st, 2015 to see about a vet coming to look at my Llama who was limping. Dr. McBride returned my call the same day and I explained how difficult it had been to find a vet who'd work on a llama. He said he would be happy to do it, and would call me on the 28th to get my address and would be there on the 29th. I didn't get a call on the 28th, so I called his mobile. No answer. I call the 29th. No answer. I left a voicemail and still haven't heard a word back. I took me almost an entire month to locate another vet who was skilled with llamas. A different vet came out today and said there's not much that can be done because the injury healed improperly. I'm convinced that had Dr. McBride come out when he said he would, something would have been done to ensure my llama doesn't limp for the rest of his life.
