The ultimate score when my boyfriend brought me to this diner a few years ago!! The entire menu is delicious and cheap in price. I eat here about once a week and my boyfriend 3 to 4 times a week. The entire staff is friendly, including the cook who goes around to every table if there's a break in his day to make sure you are satisfied and to help clean tables. Now I tell everyone about it. DoorDash order I ordered the chopped sirloin and eggs; they gave me a greasy, unseasoned hamburger patty with soggy potatoes and moist toast on the side. My girlfriend ordered an omelette, which was bland and also came with their signature soggy potatoes. They even managed to ruin the biscuits and gravy, which may have been some of the worst I've ever had. Overall I couldn't finish anything they gave me, so even with the cheap price tag, it still wasn't worth it. After the night I had I needed something to forget that Nova does not function well before 9am. Having to a 10 hour drive staring me in the face we talked the night before about getting up early and hitting the road. This was after Nova had me driving all around Denver looking for this place. She dated a guy years ago who had friends who had a place in the RiNo district of Denver and they had taken her and Mr Wonderful to the Butcher Block and since her and I hooked up we've searched for this place the last 3 times we were in Denver but no luck and Nova couldn't remember the name. When we finally stumbled upon it you would have thought she had won the lottery she was so excited. I tried numerous times to wake her up when the alarm went off at 6am but was instead greeted with a barrage of course words that would have made Satan blush and promises of violent acts she planned for me if I didn't give her just a few more minutes. All I was doing was breathing which was to loud for her to tolerate. Does anyone know what the female equivilant of Satan is? We got to the Butcher Block pre church crowd, assuming that people in Denver do actually go to church. It's a dive and don't you know that drives are ALWAYS the best places to eat. Always. Butcher Block was no different and I owe them a debt of gratitude for turning on Nova's nice switch. I have a list of foods that I try whenever I try out a new restaurant, at least new to me. For example, if I try a new Mexican Restaurant I will always order a Chili Rellano because my philosophy is if they can't master the basics then they can't master the more complex like a molè. In the case of breakfast joints, my go to is chicken fried steak. I ordered the chicken fried steak with 2 eggs, basted and hash browns. You wanna know if a breakfast place is legit, order basted eggs. You'll be surprised how many cooks have no idea what this even means. Nova orders a #2 with sausage patties, not links cause she's a pain in the ass. Or meals arrived quicky and in gotta say it was one of the better breakfast I've had and as far as dives go it rivals Waveland Cafe in my beloved Des Moines. They nailed the basted eggs and the chicken fried steak was some of the best only surpassed by Granny Grunts that she used to make for me when I was a kid. It was spot on and when I asked the waiter to not skimp on the gravy, well they nailed that to. The only reason they did not get 5 stars was I didn't think that the hash browns we crisp enough. This no frills little diner on the outskirts of downtown is a Plain Jane for sure appearance wise. What you DO get is a very good meal for some of the cheapest prices in town. The huge, fully loaded breakfast burrito comes in at a whopping $6.25! The burrito is smothered in delicious mild green chili and you have the standard choices of ham, bacon or sausage to choose from. Secondly, the homemade cinnamon rolls ($2.50 each) are crazy "melt in your mouth" good. There are two seating areas (front diner and back room). It appeared that the regulars congregated in the back room, which on this cold morning was also a bit warmer than the front diner section. I don't even know where to begin...but we are hooked. It would be a go to breakfast place without question if it weren't so far away. BUT, just give me an excuse and I am there. Perhaps it's the nostalgic aura of this hole in the wall diner (in the middle of no where in an industrial area) with cafeteria like booths and random knick knacks throughout for decor or sale; fast, efficient, no frills service - server wasn't oozing friendly but he never let our coffee cup go dry; food came out remarkably fast, fresh and hot - overall A-Ok, not too greasy, diner food; owner comes out from behind the line and greets every table, checks if everything was ok, and sincerely thanks you for coming in. The total package is 5 star - not pretentious, able to serve a diverse group of loyal patrons. For the record, we tried some breakfast staples - a single order of steak and eggs (server told us a single is about a 5.5 oz steak and about twice that for a double order. My wife asked for the steak medium rare but it was more on the rare side but a surprisingly decent steak nonetheless. She wanted eggs poached which they don't do; however, she got basted instead and enjoyed them. I ordered bacon and eggs with rye toast; hashbrowns had that notable nice flat grill char and flavor - but not rancid like one would taste from a poorly kept grill. And then there's the cinnamon rolls. I won't say they are the best I have every had, but they are the best of their kind. They are not too dense, don't come drenched in icing, and are to die for with melted butter slathered all over it....need I say more? Breakfast is good. The best thing is the service! The cook came out and greeted us, asked how the food was, and genuinely cared. This is so refreshing compared to the typical restaurant experience. The cinnamon rolls will make you black out they're so good, if you never eat here (which you should) get one of those gooey hot buttery delicious things in your mouth before you die. And yes, I am on it. It looks like it's been around for a while but if you look closely everything is spotless, no ketchup stuck to the inside of the lid, salt and pepper tops sparkle, all the little things that would be dirty anywhere else are spotless here. The service is what you'd want in a quick diner, they say hello, bring you coffee, take your order, and move it along to the next table. Sometime you've gotta ask for a side of toast that was left behind, but honestly other than that it's perfection. The food is delicious, bacon is crispy, hash browns are seasoned well, everything we've ordered has been mouth wateringly tasty. I'm a personal fan of the half roundhouse (a delicious pile of hash browns, an egg, bacon, sausage, ham, and smothered in gravy) and my partner is a die hard fan of the french toast. Small and unassuming- one of these things is not like the other. Located right outside RINO, however Butcher Block is far from some of the other hipster restaurants in that area. I went with a friend on Sunday around 11. The little parking lot outside was stacked with cars, and some were parked along the side street as well. It was busy, and yet the service was quick and friendly, and the food was cheap and filling. My friend had the half meat plate, two eggs, half a serving of meat, hash browns and toast. She said everything was good, although she prefers her hash browns crispier than they were served. Not bad for a meal that was less than $7, especially in Denver. I had the cinnamon roll and a cup of coffee and paid 5 and some change for that. The cinnamon roll was a little overbaked and used butter rather than icing- would not recommend. The green chili wasn't very hot, but it had good flavor. My boyfriend got the green chili and cheese three egg omelet, and it was good, but, didn't actually look like a three egg omelet; it was smaller than I was expecting, given my very large two egg burrito. Definitely decent-sized, and the omelet came with a very large serving of hash browns and a choice of wheat or wheat toast. The hash browns were on the softer side. We also had coffee and a cinnamon roll. The cinnamon roll! The cinnamon roll comes with the option of butter on top, and we went for it--so delicious! Lots of cinnamon, nice and warm, and clearly homemade. The cinnamon roll tasted a lot like the time-consuming yeast ones that I make just once a year. And it was huge and only $1.95. Enjoyed an absolutely delicious breakfast here this morning! I had a cinnamon roll, coffee, and the "roundhouse" which is composed of eggs, sausage, bacon, and hash browns smothered in green chili. Green chili had just enough spice to it for me and the cinnamon rolls were soft and buttery. We were greeted warmly and told to seat ourselves. The waitresses were attentive and refilled my coffee frequently so I was never left with an empty cup. The food came very quickly, and it really seemed like everyone working there loved being there.
