I've lived about 5 minutes from this place for over a year now and have really been wanting to try it and finally got the chance today! We ordered carry out because the building is extremely small and especially with covid restrictions right now, just figured carry out was the best option. I ordered the corned beef hash, my friend ordered the spicy breakfast scramble, and an order of jelly donut pancakes to share. First let me say I wish we had ordered two orders of the pancakes because they were so good! Tasted just like a jelly donut with delicious raspberry filling I was most excited to try those and they did not disappoint!! My corned beef hash was pretty good, although the eggs were almost completely over hard, even though I ordered over medium and the actual corned beef was really good, but really salty. For a place that prides itself (and advertises itself) as being vegetarian/vegan friendly, this place fails terribly to meet certain expectations from non-meat eaters. I went a while back when it first opened: the vegan sausage was gone first of all. The only "vegan" thing I could get for brunch was a salad. The girl serving me didn't even know if certain breads they had that I could get with the salad were vegan or not. ???!!!! Then the salad came: and it had a big old piece of turkey in it! It somehow got mixed into the salad, and I made sure they knew I was vegan. When I asked the server girl what it was, she said, "I don't know." I said, "is this meat?" and she had to grab another server and she was like, "yeah that looks like meat." It makes me even wonder if they try to separate the grills for meat and "vegan meat-like" products in the back. Do they even change gloves so they don't touch vegetables after having made butter/meat/cheese products? I was disappointed. If a restaurant is going to specifically list itself as being vegan friendly, it should 1. have more vegan options, 2. train its workers better so they know what the ingredients are in what they serve, and 3. make non meat eaters feel safe eating there by not accidentally mixing in left over meat from another prep work into his/her salad. So many other better vegan places around. Olive that just opened up is one. read more

Loved the pancakes, the chai latte French toast and bagel. I was told the caramelized onion omelete was great. We were lucky to get the table in a separate room, with an amazing paper lamp, and some room for my kid to run around. Perfect table for 6 people (or in our case 3 adults and a toddler). This is a very small and very cute cafe! Don't come on the weekend unless you are prepared to wait for a while. But if you are patient and can wait your turn, you will be in for a treat! They have lots of fun flavors of pancakes and omelettes and even quite a few vegan options! They also serve lunch food, but I've only been for breakfast. Last time I was here I had an omelette with bacon, tomatoes, avocado, jalapeños, American cheese, and salsa. It was delicious! It also came with seasoned potatoes that had quite a bit of garlic on them! I also had a mimosa and a Bloody Mary, both of which are worth trying! I preferred the mimosa, but I'm also not a huge fan of tomato juice. read more

I really really, really appreciate that Butter is vegan friendly. But...I might have liked my meal a little more if my vegan breakfast burrito didn't taste like maple syrup. I'm guessing my food got mixed with something else that had a maple flavor? Dunno. It was edible but not so awesome. I got a Buckeye vegan cupcake to go, too. The person who rang me out promised "an explosion of flavor in my mouth," (direct quote) but what I got was a dried out cupcake. Oh well. I'd definitely check this place out again, though. It's helpful to know the place and as an outsider, I didn't know everything on the menu, but the staff was kind and funny and everything is online to refer to if you can't find everything you like on their menus! My food was great, the service was not. I expected to the food to take a little bit because it is a small kitchen and we had 5 in our group, but we were the only people in there for a time and we had to ask 2 and 3 times for thingss like more silverware and refills. Perhaps I'm projecting, but there was a distinct air of "better than you" towards our group, especially after the more obviously pierced and tattooed artsy looking types strolled in. But, like I said, the food and beverage selection was pretty nice and everything my table had turned out nicely. I had the vegan burrito and vegan sausage and was amazed by how flavorful it all was - nothing bland or tasteless about it. I think the only food based complaint at my table was that the regular breakfast burrito was a bit bland, but an extra helping of the delicious salsa fixed that up right quick. read more

The first time I split the french toast with my bestie and had had scrambled eggs with spinach and cheese with bacon... real regular, but it was sooo good. I tried my friend Paris omelet which had caramelized onions I believe, and guyere cheese...now that was good! My husband ordered the French toast kabobs with potatoes and sausage. The kabobs were supposed to have strawberries and pineapple. There was no pineapple and the potatoes came out 5 minutes after the rest of the meal. I ordered the traditional egg breakfast with a pancake and eggs scrambled. The pancake was slightly underdone, which can happen sometimes. The eggs were way overcooked, they were brown on the outside and rather rubbery. When the server asked how everything was I told her about the eggs. She took them to the chef, who she said was new, and the chef stated they looked fine and the next time I could ask for them cooked 'light'. They're eggs - you don't have to kill them! read more

I went there with a friend on a Wednesday morning. The place was not crowded. There were about 4 other tables there. We were seated and brought waters, but no one came to take our drink order for approximately 15 minutes. The table of three that was seated after us had put in food orders and were eating before our food arrived. Our waitress seemed to have just our table when we were seated, but was not around much. I had to ask another waiter for a coffee refill and he jokingly stated he only served his own tables but poured me a cup anyway from the pot in his hand. The food was not as good as I recalled. This was a place I used to enjoy coming to. The fried potatoes used to be delicious. At this visit, they were just lumps of overly cooked and slightly peeled potatoes--no taste or crispiness. I ordered an omelet which is supposed to be made of 3 eggs--well, those must have been bird eggs because the omelet was TINY! My friend got the jelly donut pancakes. They did not have much jelly filling. several bites were completely dry- just two bland pancakes on top of each other. I used to be a fan, but will not be going back. read more

I have been here a couple times, all pleasant experiences. Small, hipster type cafe that uses organic/vegan/natural/local ingredients whenever possible. Omelets are awesome with very fresh and hearty ingredients (I recommend the turkey sausage) and AMAZING potatoes on the side. However, they are probably best known for their pancakes and french toast (all options are good). My friends have had the breakfast burrito multiple times and they all rave about it. Prices are decent for what you're getting and the service is fine--including a waitress who does all orders by memory without fault...so far. read more

So here's my personal rundown of this place. So the people are super super nice. The cupcake we tried (chocolate non-vegan) was super dry like it was there from the day before. The latte with almond milk was okay but I had to ask for raw sugar. The mimosas were fantastic. I ordered the crab cake and they looked amazing and it also came with a hair in it. The staff were very sorry and removed the dish off our tab. The staff is so friendly! I hope you have a better experience than me! Enjoy! read more

Went here for breakfast, and I will definitely go back!!! The environment reminds me of a hipster, quaint restaurant you'd find in a city like Chicago or New York. Also, if you like organic/free range you'll want to eat here. They even reference the book Skinny Bitch when naming a veggie omelet. Speaking of omelets, I had the spring omelet and it was AWESOME! My boyfriend had the burrito and it was disappointing. His friend had the blueberry pancakes and they were very good. We all had potatoes, they were a little under cooked, but not bad. I came here on a Wednesday morning with 14 other people I work with. We called when we were on the way and they had the table ready for us when we got here. It is much larger than it seems from outside and the decor is adorable. Waitresses were personable and attentive and all of the food was amazing. Our table got everything from corned beef hash, to pancakes, to omelets, and everything was delicious. They keep the coffee coming, which is also delicious. They have a case up front with various cupcakes that all look very tasty, but we were too full by the time we finished eating to even think about them. I wish I was from Ohio so I could come here more often! read more

I ordered food for pick up. They said it would be 10-15 minutes so I go in to wait after 12 minutes. I'm standing there for 15-20 additional minutes while they do just about everything but help me. They have my drink on the counter but my food is nowhere to be seen and an employee comes out of the back not wearing a mask in the restaurant. It's hanging around his neck. That was the last straw for me but then I get the food and it's not even that great. The sausage was delicious but nothing else was outstanding. I have been to Butter Cafe several times. The first time I went, I just thought it was good. I've never thought anymore highly of it other than "good". The next couple of times I went, I wondered why I kept wasting my money. Many of the menu items just feel like things I could whip up at home, which is not what I like to pay for when I go out to eat. I also find their food to be very inconsistent as far as taste goes. The service is just meh as well. Not bad, but also not good. I think that this location is great and I hope they improve their food because if not, Butter Cafe won't last much longer on Brown Street. read more

I remember going to this café when it first opened. I thought the place was cute and hoped they would continue to thrive in Dayton and here they still are in 2015! I visited the area a weekend ago and was so happy to see the place stuffed full of people. moving on -- it's a great little local restaurant that is very veggie and vegan friendly. I'm a pescatarian and was impressed to see a lox bagel breakfast option. my friend ordered some pancakes that looked absolutely delicious too. I was also excited that there was white and green tea options other than the normal black and chamomile options most restaurants carry. after working in a tea shop a bit, I learned that green and white teas can be more expensive and harder to obtain, so point for Butter Café. the only thing I didn't like was the coffee. it was the first time I had Butter's coffee and it was absolutely awful. I like to drink very dark coffee with nothing added and there was just something weird about their coffee, even when I tried to add a little cream or sugar, which I would never normally do. it tasted sour or perhaps like some soap or sanitizer residue was still in my cup when the coffee was poured? anyway, this was the only problem I had and would still highly recommend Butter to friends. read more

The food and service were pretty good. The coffee was hot and strong just the way I like it. The cafe' is super cute and seating isn't smashed together which makes for a better experience. I enjoyed my breakfast, but had asked for eggs poached hard and they came runny. Everything could have used a bit more seasoning, but was delicious none the less. Big plus for having RedHot instead of Tabasco. I would definitely go back. The pancake and french toast options sounded incredible. Probably should have ordered some of those instead.
