I've been to Butter a few different times and it's pretty good. The service can be kind of slow, even during non peak times. I imagine it's because they have a small kitchen but wouldn't recommend it if you are crunched for time. They have seasonal specials and those are usually the group favorites. On my last visit I had their Cuban with roasted potatoes, while not a traditional Cuban, I really enjoyed it. The pork was juicy and it came with two large pieces of ham as well. My kiddos love their pancakes. My friend liked their chorizo scramble that was packed with jalapeños. read more

Was really excited to try this place as they had a good variety of vegan options, which isn't easy to find at brunch. The food was mediocre at best and the four of us tried a wide range of options. The service we had was absolutely terrible, orders forgotten, orders put in wrong, and then when corrected or informed of errors he acted like it was our fault or that we should have told him sooner so we could prove the order was wrong. When I asked if my vegan scramble had the vegan sausage in it he said of course it does it all comes in a bag. Gross, and not what you want to hear. Service was not great at all. I waited for someone to ask me what I wanted to drink for at least 20 minutes and then 15-20 minutes for water to be given to me! After people left the tables that were by me no one wiped them off or the chairs. My table was dirty as well, luckily I carry disinfectant wipes with me. When I received my food it was decent but cold! After waiting almost 45 minutes for food the food was cold! The utensils was dirty so I asked for plastic ware. Floors were dirty. I had to get my own to go box and walk to the front just for my check because no one ever came to give it to me. There was no social distancing what so ever. The entire restaurant was full. I was sad to see Dolcessa (the previous restaurant in this spot) leave, but once I visited Butter, I was pretty excited to try it out. The good: Butter serves lots of vegan and gluten free options. I'm not vegan but a lot of my family is, and I have 2 in our group that don't eat gluten. Butter is a great option for a group outing because they cater to the special dietary needs of a variety of people, and sometimes that is tricky to find. The reality: The first time we visited, my potatoes were kind of gross. Bland, too oily, cold. But the rest of my food was good, and the staff seemed friendly and enthusiastic. One talked to us about a vegan burrito night at another place. It was an okay experience and we were happy to bring friends and family to check it out, and talked it up to a few people. During various other visits, the service has been spotty, usually friendly but very slow. The furniture is flimsy and uncomfortable. The Ikea chairs feel like they are going to fall apart under you, and the last time we were there, one of our group who is less than 100 pounds tried to switch her chair thinking it was broken, only to find they are all that wobbly and flimsy. The cappucino is horrible. Undrinkable. The one time I ordered it, I left it sitting at our table completely full til the end of the meal and my server never asked if there was anything wrong with it. I told her it was not good, and she offered to bring me something else, but still charged us for it. The potatoes have gotten better, though they still aren't very good in texture. The bacon is very expensive for what you get. I had a great reuben the last time we were there. The mac n cheese ("best you ever had!" according to the menu) is bland and the texture is weird. I've ordered the Chai Tea French toast twice. It is supposed to be chai spiced - soaked in a spiced custard before frying, and served layered with mascarpone cheese. The first time I got it I thought the mascarpone was weird, then realized it was giant gobs of flavorless butter, that I had to scrape out from between the pieces. I thought maybe there had been a mistake, but I had been waiting a long time for my food, so I just ate it and didn't mention it. Today we visited: We were seated immediately at a tall table. I'm on the short side, so those usually hurt my legs, make my feet fall asleep, but since we were being seated immediately, I thought it would probably be okay. We had to wait about 30 minutes for our food, my legs were killing me by the time it got there. The coffee was okay, but my cup was chipped and cracked across one side, so I had to drink out of it using my left hand to avoid the gross broken side. Maybe it is just me, but I feel like chipped ceramic is porous and therefore not very clean. I ordered the chai French toast again. Again it came out, not perceptibly spiced, with big gobs of butter between each piece - 4 pieces, with approximately 1.5 tablespoons of butter between each of them. I scooped it off. No mascarpone again, and now I'm sure it isn't an oversight. The bits of french toast that weren't swimming in butter were dry and flavorless. Potatoes were well seasoned, but mushy - almost like oily mashed potatoes. Our waitress was rude and sourfaced. When she took my order she interrupted me to ask if I wanted anything else, rather than letting me tell her my order. She got our orders confused (probably because it had been so long since she had taken them) and when she brought out our food, she slapped the bill down on the table without asking how the food was, and never came back. Never refilled the water glasses, no more coffee, didn't pick up our bill and another staff member had to cash us out because we were tired of waiting. Didn't get a box for our food because we just wanted to leave. Breakfast for 2 was $33.00, did not include refills of beverages, and was served with a sneer. I really want to like Butter, it is in my neighborhood and seems like the perfect place for my family and friends to have brunch. We all love to support local businesses, especially those catering to underserved (in Dayton) vegetarians, etc, but today was really unpleasant. I cannot recommend it any longer. I used to love Butter Cafe but the last time I went there will be the last time I went there. The food took forever to come out. After being sat at a table our server almost never came back. And worst of all I found a bright blue hair in my food that, when I drew attention to it from the server, was not apologized for or offered to replace my potatoes (which was where I found the hair). Working in the food industry myself I know how you're supposed to respond to something like that and it isn't in the way my server did. Such a shame that a local business in a prime place can't give a shit about the locals who try to support it. read more

Loved this place! My boyfriend and I were in the Dayton area for an event and didn't expect to find a plethora of vegan options... especially at a place with "butter" in the name. We were pleasantly surprised to see the vegan options clearly labeled on the menu here. I had the vegan breakfast burrito, and he had the veggie burger, and both were fantastic, as was my watermelon mimosa and the vegan buckeye cupcake we took to-go. The side of potatoes we both had with our dishes were really tasty and uniquely prepared; they seemed to be smashed, then pan fried, with some fresh herbs. Yum! The only negatives were (a) I don't think I received the vegan cheese in my burrito that was listed on the menu (although it was good enough that I didn't notice this until the end, and so didn't point it out to my server) and (b) it took quite a while to get our check. It was a busy Saturday, so I don't blame them, but it was quite a wait. Despite that, we'd definitely go back if we were in Dayton again!! read more

Butter cafe is my favorite places to have brunch on Brown Street. Their breakfast potatoes are a must. They have a diverse menu with something for anyone even if they are gluten free or vegan. I enjoy trying out their specials as well. My only critique of this place is that recently they opened a late night window. I do not think the late night food quality on par with Butter's food during the day. I hope that their quality goes up or they ditch the late night food window. read more

The staff was very friendly and prompt! My girls had the cinnamon sugar pancakes and ate every bite. I had the corned beef hash breakfast, and was pleasantly surprised that it was actual corned beef, cut up with bigger potatoes (not the mulled up looking canned stuff!). My wife and I decided to meet here for lunch as it was just a few doors down from an appointment she had. There were only a few other diners at the time and we ordered our food a couple of minutes after she arrived with plenty of time to make her appointment but after our food hadn't arrived 45 minutes later we had to arrange for her to get hers to go and when the food finally came I just had to eat my lunch quickly and alone in order to get back to work. I don't know how her food was since she had to leave with it and my scramble was just ok and the toast was cold. I understand when you have staffing issues, but you should inform your guests before they order that it is going to take an unusually long time for your food to be served. The manager gave me a 10% discount which is almost an insult considering the poor service we encountered. We will not be back. read more

I often read Yelp reviews, but this is my first time providing a review. I arrived when the restaurant was not very busy, so I was immediately seated. Getting food was a little slow, but I was understanding. The waiter, Brandon, was pretty good. He experienced a couple of issues beyond his control, but he was quick to apologize. I was EXTREMELY disappointed that I ordered a side of bacon for $3.50 and it consisted of ONLY 2 small slices of bacon...one of which was very close to being burnt...this is ridiculous! We are college parents and we took our student and roommate out for Sunday brunch. We put our names in and waited about 20 min for seating. The waitress was sweet and environment was inviting. We were excited just to be together and enjoy good dining. My daughter had eaten there a few times and loved it. We were seated by the door so unfortunately it was cold and I kept putting on and off my parka. I ordered the skinny b**** omelette. It arrived before anyone else's and it was cold. The potatoes to me are kinda weird because they are heavily seasoned but I tasted a strong flavor of dill. I like dill but I feel like on breakfast potatoes it's weird. My hub ordered the corn beef hash which he said was good but the corn beef was in huge pieces and he had to cut it up. He didn't think the potatoes tasted too strong of dill. His were piping hot. Also he asked for jelly for his toast and we had to remind them to bring it to the table. He ate most of his meal when the jelly arrived. My daughter ordered the breakfast burrito with avocado. They brought the burrito and didn't add the avocado. They just sliced it and put it on the side. The waitress apologized for it not being in there. Her roomie ordered the breakfast sandwich. When it came, the waitress said, we ran out of bacon...do you want sausage? Well the sandwich is supposed to have bacon in it...it's weird to not tell her that beforehand. Anyway, she can back with 3 sausage links 10 minutes later. (I had to remind her about the sausage) The roomie didn't quite know how to add it in Her sandwich. We helped her slice it and put it on. The cinnamon pancakes were recommended so we ordered them for the table. They came first. They were a little dense/doughy but pretty good. We still had a great time just to see our daughter and roommate but I think they could improve on food and service. Not sure if we will return. read more

I was seated quickly into a cramped table, and the waitress took 10+ minutes to acknowledge my presence. I placed an order for 2 eggs, 2 pieces of bacon, and a waffle. After 30 plus minutes I got my food. The bacon was Burned, and the waffle tasted like a soggy dumpling noodle. I'm not sure why Butter Cafe doesn't have higher reviews. This is my go-to breakfast place in Dayton. It's cute inside and has a cozy feel. The menu is extensive with lots of options and they always offer seasonal food and drinks. They have great, strong coffee and they keep it coming. Service has always been good for me. They have daily baked-fresh desserts which I would highly recommend. They also offer GF and Vegan options. Lastly, they have a small parking lot on the side, other spots around back. Loved our breakfast at Butter Cafe! I had the Mean Green Omelette. It was a delicious new flavor combo (bacon, spinach, and a garlic pesto - YUM) and the potatoes on the side were perfect. Sadly...I was not overly impressed. I had such high hopes for this place. I envisioned a trendy little hole in the wall, hipster kind of place. Not what I got. This dinky little restaurant could be so cute but it completely lacks decor and personality. The staff is genuinely nice and that's pretty much the high point of the establishment. Food was basically "ok". I had an egg white omelette which was ok. There was nothing too exciting about it but then again I ordered an egg white omelette so what did I expect? The fresh fruit that it came with was pretty awesome. It had cherries in it which for some reason was very exciting to me. Delicious! My other half had an order of jelly donut pancakes which were delightful but saccharin sweet. A few bites was plenty. He also dined on the traditional breakfast which was...well...rather traditional. No surprises there. Mom had the almond joy pancakes which were pretty anticlimactic. Boring chocolate chip pancakes with a few sprinkles of coconut and almonds. Not sure what I expected but somehow it was more than that. I topped with off with a warm mimosa. Yuck! Not at all the case Food and coffee are mediocre at best With the prices presented they can't boast value either. their champagne and sorbet brunch cocktail should be avoided. $9-10 gets you the tiniest flute half full of sorbet and the cheapest champagne (bud light would have tasted better). I ate hear again yesterday after multiple visits and decided it was finally time to let everyone know what a little gem this place is!! The decor is super cute, cozy and inviting. The menu is unique and fun with a lot of variety that you can't normally find in this hood. My favs are the many different types of pancakes they offer as well as the stuffed peppers which are gone for the winter but I've been told will arrive again with Spring!!! I'm so happy this little cafe has arrived in Dayton and look forward to my next visit. read more

The food is fantastic. The service is not. You'll see the staff through the dining room window smoking more than you will at your table. My last trip I searched the dining room for a coffee pot and refilled my cup myself. This is a shame, because the food really is as good as the reviews say, and if you're a vegan it's just amazing, but it's seriously ruined by horrible service. A great vision for a Breakfast/Luncheon place, with organic meats and healthier options instead of the tired and usual Bob Evans fare. The free-range breakfast sausages are the best I have ever tasted, cooked perfectly and not over done. We were treated with very friendly and engaging service. Wow! We came up to Dayton to find something to eat after a long morning of hiking in Yellow Springs. I follow a plant based diet, so I did a search of options in the Dayton area and The Butter Café was one of the results. After scanning the menu, we thought it looked pretty good and decided that's where we would go. My boyfriend called ahead and they gave us a ten-ish minute wait time. No problem for us as we weren't in town yet. We got there, walked in and were absolutely charmed by the ambience. A cute, sleepy little café with a small town feel. We had no idea that they had vegan baked goods, but the salted caramel cupcake and chocolate raspberry cupcake caught our eye. Of course we had to get one of each! For lunch, I decided on the tofu reuben and my boyfriend got the vegan burger. OH. MY. GOD! My reuben was probably the best sandwich I've ever had. I had the house potatoes on the side and they were wonderful. The tofu was cut just right, it was the perfect amount of sauerkraut and the thousand island was delicious. I tried a bite of my boyfriend's burger and I can say with 100% certainty that I've never tasted a vegan burger that so closely resembles the real thing. We shared the cupcakes for dessert and were blown away! They were moist, light and packed with flavor. We are not in the Dayton area often as we live in Cincinnati, but this place has us wanting to come back. Thank you, Butter! read more

Best. Pancakes. Ever. ...from a restaurant, anyway. Sarah makes the best in the world, but these were so dope, I ate till I was sick! I guess I do that a lot. The 'cakes were PACKED with fresh blueberries, and perfectly fluffy. The coffee was strong enough, and the free range bacon was thick, and cooked as well as you can expect from any restaurant. Excellent home fries, which is very rare these days, especially in the Midwest. Aaaaaaand we made it through a massive breakfast feast without even breaking $30. If I have one complaint, it's that there was so much delicious food that I lost control of myself and gorged until I thought I might die of pancake overdose. read more

This new place is a great addition to the restaurant area near campus. They have a few kinks to work out being new--no tater tots even though the menu says so :(, my boyfriend's grilled cheese wasn't all the way melted, and a mediocre tea selection--but I will definitely be back! The food was fresh and delicious. I had a BLT with really great bacon and fresh veggies and great bread. Great service and I LOVE that there's water on the table! The best part for me was the CUPCAKE. I'm not even big on sweets and I'm still having dreams about the chocolate cupcake with pink icing.
