Don't accept doordash orders if you are going to specifically push all of them to fulfill a catering order. I placed an order at 930am, and at 1130, I had rotated through three Doordashers who showed up, talked to the staff, and passed the order to someone else. The first dasher was told there is no ETA, asked again and was told 3 hours (this is on top of the two hours I already waited), and the second was told that they pushed all doordash orders for a catering order and didn't know when they'd be able to get around to the doordashers. I get it. You're busy. And I was sympathetic to that - for two hours. But either don't accept the orders if you aren't going to touch them, or cancel them when you realize you can't fulfill them - because I had to fight with doordash to get my money refunded since I was the one cancelling. Can't comment on food since I never got it, but I would never want to eat at a place that is so unprofessional, and were rude to the doordashers. read more

My wife and I had a late breakfast and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had the Paris omelet which was delicious with caramelized onions, mushrooms and goat cheese and the wheat toast and strawberry jam hit the spot. The only time we went there prior the service was slow and the food was cold so definitely worth another try they must have just had an off day it is still a bit overpriced for breakfast but it's a nice cute place. Butter Cafe has something for everyone, vegan or traditional. Certain days very busy, can be hectic. Restaurants flow is challenging and that does include parking, but their food is worth it. Myself Vegan so I always do Tofu scramble: it's somewhat bland however if I remember to add peppers, onions or whatever veggies they have available that helps a lot. I do love their potatoes. I've never left hungry and always satisfied. I wish they'll improve their furniture, Rocky tables and uncomfortable chairs. However, don't let that stop you from coming. Literally, just had the worst breakfast experience I've ever had. For Someone who's worked in the industry for a long time I'm usually very understanding about food, quality and service yet everything that I ordered was completely inedible. The potatoes tasted like they've been sitting out for days and the avocado that I paid 2.25 for was served black, totally not the server's fault she was very nice. Yes, she lacked a lot of the basic server skills that are needed. I usually hate posting negative reviews like this. Hi I do consider myself quite the foodie. I recently discovered Butter cafe and heard it was great but very pricey and not enough options. I tried myself j will say it is very pricey and even to add something to your potatoes that come with some dishes is even expensive. I understand they are on in a busy part of our city but I feel that they also consider having options giving a better experience and going above and beyond. I was excited to try this place: independent, quirky cafe with an inventive menu with lots of options. Server was friendly and attentive. Silverware and coffee cups were not clean. Front window looked like something had been spilled/splashed on it a long time ago and never cleaned. Potatoes were truly ice cold, rubbery, burnt side of omelette folded inside. Great breakfast place just South of downtown Dayton & just Northwest of UD campus on Brown Street. Scratch based food with an eclectic down home feel. Great service & a bright and cheerful setting. My boyfriend and I just went there for brunch he got an omelette and pancakes and I got the tofu scramble and avocado toast. It was delicious hot and we didn't have to wait too long. We were seated immediately. We went on a Saturday. They have new CBD coffee which was delicious. They also had a lot of vegan options! They serve lunch all day, and have a lot of options with tofu. Normally I don't like tofu but their is SO good. Super filling and reasonably priced! They have a lot of alcoholic breakfast beverages like mimosas (that I will for sure be trying next time!!) we have 3 boxes of leftovers!! I also recommend their gluten free toast!! Can't rave enough about this place!!! We were in Dayton for a quick overnight and wanted a quick but not fast food restaurant. Our kids got the fruit & yogurt parfait which had amazing fresh berries, pineapple, bananas, and crunchy granola. Topped with cinnamon and a large lemon poppy seed muffin! One order would've been enough to feed my two kids, so we gladly helped them finish. My husband and I shared the breakfast burrito that came with a butter smashed potato hash. So flavorful and so simple!!! The spinach tortilla held up well, and it was more than enough for me & the hubs to share. Coffee was smooth and flavorful, not bitter. Great vegetarian options for our family. I into wish we could have dined in, but with Covid we opted to do take out instead. Boring food, slow service, poor service. After being sat I had to go get my own menu as I was ignored. Eventually my order was taken and I was given beverages. It took over thirty minutes to get my breakfast. No one checked on me. No drinks were refilled and I was ignored. When my food did finally arrive, it did so without silverware. I had to flag someone down to ask for it. And for drinks. My table neighbor tried to ask me for sweetener but both of our tables were un-stocked. The steak and eggs was mediocre at best. Steak over cooked and under seasoned. Potato's fair. Eggs ok. Toast ok, but covered in fake butter. The place seamed understaffed. Used to be one of my favourite places to grab breakfast, but I can't support them after seeing how they treat their employees. Summary: did not pay wages, terminated a spouse when I turned down a job offer due to feeling unwell (I had heart failure soon after). I was offered a job here after being recommended by my spouse. I initially accepted, but ultimately declined the offer due to feeling unwell enough to work consistently. I sent my apologies with that explanation and thanked them for their time. My spouse suffered for it. The rest of their shifts were removed from the schedule and they never heard back again. Butter didn't even offer the courtesy to terminate them. My spouse never received their earned wages. I had heart failure soon after and spent the rest of the year (6+ months) in the hospital with my heart working at 5% on life support. I guess I made the right call in telling them I was too ill to work. I'm just now settling in back home and now use a wheelchair, so wouldn't be able to work in the building anyways. Most of the serving staff were always very polite, so I wish them the best during this time, but I'll be finding somewhere else to support where the management and owners are not as callous. read more

Can't recommend this place enough. I come here whenever I'm in Dayton to visit my family. I (try) to eat vegan and this is the only place in town where both my folks and I can get a good meal. Had vegan sliders there once and would say it's one of the top ten vegan meals I've had at a restaurant. Also, the staff are always incredibly nice. I love my folks to death, but they are not the easiest on servers. Both are incredibly specific about their food and the staff is unbelievably patient with them. Butter used to be one of our favorite bfast or lunch spots. After having a horrible lunch there today, we will never go back. I believe Butter is under new management. We arrived at 1:30 they close at 2:00. Service was sub par. The coffee was Luke warm. They were out of almost everything's we ordered such as biscuits and gravy, the veggie Ruben, and best of all they were out of salsa for the bfast burrito we waited for for 15 minutes after everyone else got there food. The Ruben sandwich was burned on one side and soggy on the other, one of the orders of potatoes arrived fine while the other order of potatoes was clearly the dredges of the last of the potatoes bits that were burnt. I could go one but it is clear that the waitress and staff wanted to get out of there at exactly closing. It was an expensive meal as well. read more

I have been here several times. The first few fell between awesome & very good. The last few times were between barely acceptable to downright gross. I don't know what is happening that they are so inconsistent, but after having seen one of the cooks on one of my last visits, I have an idea they may have problems getting reliable help(?) I wonder if that's the reason for the wild divergence among raters, as well. Every breakfast dish I've gotten here has been at least edible. The place is kitschy-cute, a little divey, but in a good way. I like the fluffy lights. The front room can get cold. On my last visit (and it will truly be my last), I came in from the arctic zone to hopefully warm up with some hot comfort food. I sat in the frigid front room & ordered coffee and a pot pie. The coffee didn't come out until the meal did. The coffee was cold. This was very disappointing. The pot pie looked delicious, but was the worst I have ever had in my life. The top looked like a shortbread crust & was very promising. I took off the top & there was no steam coming off of the inside of the pie. The inside was cold as if it had been in the refrigerator without being reheated. Worse, the filling was not cooked. The vegetables were raw, the sauce was thin & seemed like it was nothing but milk. The server never came to check on me. It was clear they either didn't want my business &/or didn't care at all. I didn't finish my food, & was finally given the bill without anyone asking whether I had enjoyed the meal. This place needs some serious upgrades in quality control. After multiple visits here, we've previously enjoyed the food. Make to sure to ask questions about the menu before ordering because their descriptions do NOT match what you are served. "Black beans" could mean an entire black bean burger, scrambled does not always been scrambled, and I'm giving a little leeway with the pandemic, they were out of different things from beverages to bacon. My wife and I were visiting family in Dayton and always look to eat at local restaurants, however this time we wish we had just gone to Golden Nugget. The good: The menu lists local, free range and gluten free options. It's (trying to be) very cute, but the fact that everyone knows what isle the Ikea furniture came from and that remnants of the space's former life as a retail boutique (slat wall sections still in place) make it a tough sale as a truly darling little spot. The bad: 1. The kitchen exhaust fan (I guess) was so loud that it created a hum in the entire restaurant as well as vibrating the floor, and with no music playing while we were there it was very annoying. 2. Several of our cups and glasses were dirty and had a "film" on them that looked like they were using poor dish detergent. 3. The server was horrible. I'm not even going to go into it because I don't want to be mean, but trust me, she was "Horrible". 4. The mystery steps? Protruding into the dinning room was a 1/2 flight of unpainted pine steps that had a bed sheet hanging to block the view of another room. However the wind was blowing so hard through the place that the sheet flapped the entire time and every few minutes a different person would appear to try and tie them down somehow only to have them break loose a few seconds later. The REALLY bad: 1. The worst thing about the Butter Cafe is that the door opens directly into the dining area and the food pick up station. On the day that we were there it was 20 degrees outside with a wind chill of 10. So every time the door opened the entire dining room is BLASTED with cold air, as are the plates of food waiting to be picked up. Adding a vinyl outer curtain or door would be a major step in the right direction.. All of these minor fix issues are unfortunate and we really do hope that the owners will step in to correct them because we treasure local restaurants on our trips to Dayton. read more

I will start by saying I am super grateful for the abundance of vegan options! That can sometimes be tricky to find while on the road, but a good portion of menu had a vegan version, which is great! The only real limitation we encountered was almond milk being the only dairy-free milk option for our coffee. Since the vegan options were plentiful, we wound up trying a few different dishes, one of which being the "vegan classic breakfast". The eggs & Impossible sausage were delicious, but the food wasn't hot when it arrived and we were a bit surprised by the "house-made potatoes" being boiled potatoes that lacked seasoning/flavor entirely. The next dish we got was the "vegan cinnamon toast crunch french toast" which was literally just toast with cinnamon dusted on it. Decent portion size (4 pc), but we wound up having to ask for a side of fruit to spruce it up a bit. My husband is from the South, so he always jumps at the opportunity to get vegan biscuits & gravy, so we tried that as well. We got the half-sized portion which only came with ONE biscuit and a plentiful amount of gravy, which unfortunately tasted a bit like soap to me. Three women walk into Butter Cafe. All from Chicago, two out of three- brand new residents of Ohio. It was a Sunday- Father's Day to be exact. You know you're at the right place when you are instantly greeted by the friendly staff and have the option of entertaining your hungry eyeballs with cupcakes by the cashier while you wait for your seat. I split the Paris Omelette & Almond Joy pancakes with a friend which were both really good. The chevre cheese, mushrooms and onions in my omelette were all very fresh- simple ingredients done right. And the Almond Joy pancakes? Let's just say that whoever invented that bad boy is brilliant and deserves a high five AND bear hug the moment he/she steps foot into Butter Cafe. I am a big fan of the fact that they support free range / organic products and are Vegan/Vegetarian friendly. Their coffee was so smooth and full of flavor I had to ask the waitress what kind it was- apparently they started grounding their own coffee which made me smile! Note that the last time I asked the waitress what kind of coffee they served was at a Southern brunch place (Big Jones) In Chicago which served Cafe du Monde coffee- so yes, my standards are kind of high. Sunday, Dan and I went and got breakfast/lunch at Butter Cafe on Brown Street located by the University Of Dayton. It was a really nice warm & sunny day. For this reason, everyone was out and about so we had to wait to be seated here. It's in an old smallish house. It was packed inside. We gave our name to the host, was told it would be about thirty minutes and we left and walked across the street to Second Time Around for a little while we waited. We returned and sat inside on a small bench for about ten minutes until we were finally seated. Just know if you come here and you have to wait, you're going to have to wait outside unless the small bench that holds four people is open inside the door. We were sat in the back at two seater table by an old non-working fireplace. There was a hole in the floor next to me that I could see down into the basement. While we were waiting for our server to come take our order these are the things I was noticing. Everything the restaurant is decorated in is either vintage/thrift looking things or from IKEA. It looked very worn down, everything was covered in dust. It was cutely decorated but made me feel dirty, cleanliness wise. I ordered the Banana Foster Pancakes and Dan ordered a Ham & Cheese Omelet. My pancakes were pretty good. The whipped cream that came on the plate was pretty disappointing. Dan said he would give his omelet three and a half stars out of five. He said his cheese wasn't melted. Other things to mention is that they have Deeper Roots Coffee from Cincy. They also have a case when you walk in the door of cupcakes. Besides regular cupcakes, they also had vegan ones. Which is really cool. I grabbed a Red Velvet Cupcake is it was pretty good. Our service from the hostess to our server, they were both extremely nice despite how busy they were. I appreciated that throughout the dining. I need everyone to know that they have an amazing Butter Burger. I got it on gluten free toast and it changed my life. I'm pretty sure everyone expects phenomenal breakfast food, and yeah, they kill the breakfast game, but this burger is one of the best things I've ever had! When you can't have buns, you learn to eat it with lettuce, or a really dry and crumbly gf bun, or just no bun at all. It was such a pleasant surprise to be able to eat a burger like a melt! Instead, the waitress kept talking to the patron about her classes and other school related topics. While I waited. Very rude, very rude.
