Visiting the Dayton area and was told to come and visit. Straight away you knew it was the place because of the brick and bright sign. Walking in, you're greeted with savory smells and voices of people enjoying their dining experience. This places as soo many nook and crannies, you could get lost, but got a nice vibrant ambiance. Like most places that try to cater to different diets, you have some hits and some misses. I loved my dish. It wasn't salted which was fine for me, I prefer to salt my own stuff, this is great for anyone on a low sodium diet. They didn't skimp on the bacon and the flavor was there. I also liked that they had many options for GF and vegan diets. Some of the omelets my friends had weren't done right, but they said they were good enough I also got my parents the jackfruit rueben sandwich, but they were out of jackfruit so they did tofu. This is a Dayton hidden gem. The food is absolutely fantastic. The menu has so much to choose from. There is a feel inside that says, "I am in Dayton, Ohio. There is no doubt about it." I always do pick up. They always take 2.5x as long as the ETA suggests. I've ordered here numerous times over the years and the food is always extremely slow so it's definitely not the fault of any one person. I wouldn't mind if the website didn't always say that it would be ready sooner. Expensive for what it is, awkward seating. I ordered a basic breakfast sandwich with sausage, and it was served on untoasted bread with sausage links that kept rolling off. Who makes a sandwich with sausage links?? It's impossible to eat. It was low quality, barely cooked sausage, too, like the discount links you can find at the dollar store. I ended up eating the sandwich items separately. The eggs were like hotel eggs, flat and rubbery. And there wasn't any cheese on the sandwich! I missed this detail on the menu when I ordered, I just assumed there would be cheese. Who makes a sandwich without cheese?? Change my mind: cheese is the "glue" that holds a sandwich together! The potatoes were just golden potatoes cut in half and barely fried or seasoned, and a little raw in the center. Definitely rushed. The taste reminded me of potatoes you'd find in a stew; dinner potatoes, not ones you'd expect for breakfast. After waiting for 40 minutes, we were finally seated in essentially a closet at an awkwardly placed table about a foot away from another table, alone in a small room. There was no restaurant ambiance or music in this room, so it was awkward to say the least. We did not order any drinks or coffee and somehow the total came to $34 without a tip. If I'm going to spend $40 on brunch, I want to at least walk away feeling satisfied, but it wasn't enough food to accomplish that. Wholesome food, cozy atmosphere and feels like your about to get a home cooked meal from your grandma...you know, the awesome grandma that is with the times and make regular or vegan options! We had excellent service, our waitress was friendly, and made the experience very enjoyable. I had a nice cup of coffee with almond milk, some caramel and vanilla added. I enjoyed the tropical French toast and a side of bacon. The French toast was delicious but felt like it was missing something...maybe a piña colada syrup of some sort . Waited 2 hours total for frozen butter on burnt French toast, and oatmeal with a lake of honey at the bottom with an excessive amount of butter. The prices are average but the food is far below. Same with the organization, the staff is really disorganized. It's like high schoolers got the money to cook breakfast for a living . I never cease to be surprised by the hidden gems Dayton has to offer. I grew up in the area and moved away after high school, but still return often to visit family. As most visits home should, mine often include brunch, and as such, my parents and I recently paid a visit to Butter Café . Service: fabulous. The staff was helpful, thoughtful, knowledgeable about the food and ingredients, and offered excellent suggestions. Food: ALL the stars. I ordered the Overlord from the special menu, and although I would never have thought to combine spicy onion chutney with hummus, spread it on sourdough toast, and top it with raisins and cashews, I'm so glad the masterminds at Butter did. My side of fresh fruit was truly fresh, and I'm fairly certain contained an entire, perfectly ripe banana. My parents, who are legendarily picky about food, both enjoyed their dishes, and as we left started making plans to return. Without me. Which is sad, but speaks volumes to the quality of this quirky café. read more

I really wanted to like this place much more than I did. I met some friends for brunch here on Monday morning. We chose it because a lot of places downtown are not open on Mondays and this looked like a fun little place and we have heard positive things about it in the past. It was just okay. First impressions were that it needs a bit of sprucing up. Wall art missing, etc. I was seated quickly and got some coffee and water while I waited for my friends. My friends came, sat and we chatted for a bit. It was at least another 15 min before anyone came to take their drink orders or our food orders. We were right up front in the middle of everything, and they just kept walking by. We had to flag someone down. Everyone was very friendly, just seemed a bit overworked maybe-not their fault, but at least say something to us. The food was okay, nothing that I would say-I have got to go back there. I got the corn beef hash, which was a childhood favorite of mine. It was quite salty and the potatoes were cold. I am not sure if it sat for too long or they just weren't heated up very well in the first place. The coffee was also not very good, but I only got brewed coffee, so I can not say how their espresso drinks are. If someone asked me to meet them there, I would probably give them another chance, but with so many other places around, unless it is a Monday, I probably won't go back. read more

Even though the waiter was sweet, Absolutely horrible experience. It took almost an hour for us to get our meal. By the time it came we were already late for work. The food was mediocre at beat. The hollandaise sauce was completely congealed in a cup. My friend's meal was awful. She actually ordered breakfast for lunch which included biscuits and gravy. The gravy was spiced very oddly and but it was so thick just it was one big solid lump and the biscuits were terrible. It's unfortunate because we want to support small local restaurants but when you get service like this you just don't ever want to go back. It's been several years since my last visit and it will be several more years before I ever think about trying again. It is such a shame. read more

Breakfast at Butter Café was delicious. We waited for a table for about 35 minutes on a Sunday morning, so plan accordingly. I ordered the spinach/garlic pesto/feta omelete and it was the perfect size and so savory and delicious.  What a great idea to add pesto!!   The blood orange mimosa was good, but not worth the price.  I've paid close to the same amount for unlimited refill mimosas in Milwaukee.   The breakfast potatoes were buttery, slightly herbed and so tender.  I could eat an entire plate of just the potatoes.  I'm drooling just thinking about them now. My husband enjoyed his chocolate milk and egg scramble, but he was a little disappointed that a side of bacon was only 2 pieces instead of 3, like most places. But it was good! Great service and amazing food. To drink I had the Lavender lemonade which was fantastic. Just the right amount of lavender flavoring. I also had the biscuits and gravy as well as the crab cake benedict. The hollandaise sauce on top of the benedict was delicious and there was a good amount of crab on it. Vegans have 'just egg' egg substitute, nutritional yeast, impossible sausage, vegan pancakes, and vegan biscuits and gravy (assume with impossible sausage) to choose from. We had a classic Reuben and a classic breakfast (2 eggs, meat, toast, side), both with breakfast potatoes. I found the breakfast potatoes very average - neither crispy nor soggy ... just in that middle ground of edible. No real flavor that some onions or garlic would grant - but very bland. While pleasing (come on, they are potatoes which means they are good) - they were lacking and I would not order them again. The food was all good and everything it should be but was not remarkably good and nothing 'crave-worthy'. I will give the team a shout out for turning out a wide variety of food from a tiny kitchen - but I simply prefer a different flavor profile overall. Really good food! My sister-in-law is vegan so we decided to try this place because they have many vegan options, as well as regular items. The potatoes has a garlic seasoning on them, very tasty! The bacon is perfectly cooked. My husband got the chocolate chip pancake, which I thought was a bit too sweet, but he loved it. I've been about four times and I've always enjoyed my meal. This time, I had the lavender lemonade. It was well balanced between lemon and lavender. I wish it was a small touch less sweet, but it was so drinkable! It would make an outstanding slushie/shaved ice flavor. I was really impressed with my first visit to Butter Cafe. The menu is pretty large, which I was expecting. My friends and I got there right around 9am so it was busy, but not super busy. Staff was great. Really friendly and patient. The food itself is delicious. So many great vegan options for my dietary restrictions. The place is pretty small so I imagine there can be a wait sometimes. I feel like the kitchen moves pretty fast so I don't think you'd wait all that long. Parking is another issues. The lot in the back and on the side is kinda confusing and tight. Even saying all that I'd be back. I'd just love if they could do a Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free french toast. Perhaps the menu has select items that excell in being made, but what I ordered was very awful, and too expensive for what it is. I had a breakfast burrito with added sausage and avocado. At first I thought they forgot to add the sausage because there was so little in the burrito, and for nearly 4$ extra. The avocado wasn't fresh. The side of potatoes the dish came with were not cooked all the way through and had a raw crunch to them. I originally wanted pancakes, and ordered one to satisfy that craving. It was difficult to eat, both flavor and consistency had me at only three small bites before my partner convinced me to just not force myself to eat it...but I felt awful for how expensive it was... The reviews and comments I read about it are decieving. The food has not settled well in my stomach at all. As for the Cafe itself, it's very crowded and can get very loud. Decided to try this spot because of the reviews. It was not what I expected. Our server was nice, but there was a lot going on. When we arrived, there were only 3 other tables seated, but we were the last to get our food of everyone that came in after us. We ordered the country scramble, the classic breakfast, and a pancake to share. The toast for both meals was barely toasted. It was still white and felt like it only had a little heat on it. The country scramble was supposed to come with gravy but didn't. I asked to bring a side of gravy, and by the time it came, we were ready for the check. The sausage in the scramble tasted different, and I couldn't place what it was. I think it would have been better with the gravy. The pancake was doughy in the middle. Our server had them cook another pancake for us to go, but it still wasn't ready by the time we were leaving, so I waited. Overall, it was ok, but I don't think I'll be back. He ordered a huevos rancheros, he said it was barely seasoned and left a lot to be desired. I had a gluten free waffle, eggs over easy, and bacon. A single gluten free waffle, of average size was 10$. Alone. By itself. With no topping other than butter and syrup. The taste was not pleasant. It was almost bitter. The eggs were fine. Bacon was over cooked. It cost us almost 60$ to eat there. For that price I feel like the food could have been better. Our server was good. She was very sweet. Great at her job. The restaurant is a little loud, which is to be expected. It's a small cafe in a college town. Very laid back. For sure don't go here if your in a hurry. Butter cafe has been a staple for delicious and eclectic brunch on Brown Street for many years. I have been here loads of times and each time has been exceptional. This time however, our experience was anything but. When we walked in we were seated immediately, given menus and our drink orders were taken by our extremely welcoming server. We chatted, our mimosas arrived and I thought to myself "this is a tried and true spot." I ordered the spinach and feta omelette and my friends all ordered the huevos rancheros. The omelette was delicious. The huevos rancheros however, were appalling. Seriously Butter Cafe? Google a photo of huevos rancheros and please attempt to convince me it's the same thing. This restaurant deserves a 0-star rating. Initially, I rely on Yelp reviews for choosing where to eat, but I can't control when others pick a spot (my sister this day). Despite reading reviews beforehand, I hoped the food gods would spare me from a disaster. Unfortunately, they let me down that day. What should have been an enjoyable family breakfast turned into a nightmare. Sloppy and chaotic service, an eyelash in my mimosa, and plastic in my black bean burger made it an awful experience. While my family ate, I couldn't because of disgust. My ordered food sat untouched. Complaining to an employee, I was assured the owner would be informed. Later, a woman with dark hair (the owner, I discovered) offered coffee and small talk. Shockingly, she didn't acknowledge the reported issues. At checkout, the burger remained on the bill, but two mimosas were removed. When we disputed the burger, the waitress removed it after a brief absence, presumably for approval. Approaching the owner, as I left, I expressed my frustration. How can you stand there without apologizing when serious issues were reported? Her demeanor and reaction to my concerns led me to believe she just doesn't know how to properly manage her own business. To the owner, it's time to step down and let someone else run this place. Maybe it's that I'm in that odd in-between age generation that doesn't quite know if they should be insulted by hipster jokes or make one, maybe I'm just not cool anymore and "don't get it" hehe but every time I have dined at The Butter Cafe I've left underwhelmed, disappointed and actually a bit red faced I've talked it up so much to my out of town guests whom until now, I have always treated to breakfast at this establishment. Folks I have brought my last guest to this place. The menu is well thought out, creatively fresh and exciting, and I like the variety of breakfast options. I can even appreciate the quirks that go along with it like the understated entry with its awkwardly too-close together wobbly tables and oddly confused atmosphere. What I can't seem to get past I guess, is that for the brilliance and work they put into coming up with such a neat menu and concept, the finished product that comes out, at least for me and my guests, has always seemed to evoke a certain aire of frugality where I hoped for (and was willing to pay for) hospitality, and uninspired plating that instead of saying "Yay! I'm a unicorn!" says something more akin to "If you don't like it go somewhere else." I am really quite hesitant to post this review because I know someone with a lot of love and passion must have put their heart into its creation! But sadly this has been my consistent experience here and I'm prepared to own it. The image just doesn't ever seem to reflect the experience. I do not doubt with a little life breathed into portions and presentation, and perhaps just a little more love put into tables that aren't perilous to full mugs of coffee and o'dark thirty pre-coffee clumsiness (that's me!!)
