It's really unfortunate that I have to write this about Butter because my friends and I have had really great memories and times here over the years. However, last night has soured us from going ever again. Our group was repeatedly sexually harassed by another patron throughout the night, which led to a confrontation at the end of the night by the girls in the group. The bar owner Vlad saw this, swooped in, and immediately started escalating the situation by aggressively grabbing and shoving us towards the exit. He continued to escalate the situation despite us asking him to calm down and to stop touching/pushing us. He refused to hear a word that came out of our mouths, calling us "belligerent drunks", even though we were all sober by that point and some of us barely drank. When a bouncer outside was asking us what the situation was and we tried to explain to him that we were harassed and that what Vlad was doing was unacceptable, he also started aggressing towards us and began yelling in our faces and even putting his hands on one of the girls to shove her out (despite her not showing any intention of aggression, drunkenness, etc). Another bouncer showed up and without a question, began waving his taser at us and buzzing it at us. While all this was happening, the patron who was sexually harassing us managed to slip away. Vlad continued to yell at our group while we were outside from inside the bar. He kept accusing us of being belligerent drunks and then slammed the door in our faces. From other reviews, it seems like the management and security here continue to let sexual harassers get away by dismissing the concerns of their female patrons and even throwing them out. It's really unfortunate that we had to experience this for ourselves last night. The excessive force we experienced last night was unacceptable. It is not safe place for patrons, especially female ones, so long as this management culture remains. I do want to insert a thank you here to the bartenders who served us the entire night, told us they believed us, and comforted us while all this was happening. Butter to the rescue! My past SF trip has got to be one of the most last minute, unplanned, spontaneous trips to date. Butter happened to be a bar that caught my best friend's attention because these guys spin hip hop among other music genres. It is the most intriguing place from their yellow buttery looking walls to the bras hanging on display on the other side of the bar right in front of their trailer serving food. Missed the food but picked on the drinks. They offered some Pride Juice to commemorate the happy and loved filled shindigs happening that weekend. It was good, sweet, but could've possibly been a creeper had I gotten more than I had! I'd been wanting to try butter for ages and finally got to. I guess while I adore the concept, the execution leaves a bit to be desired. I tried the tang-tini and it was...okay. The other drinks definitely matched the "cheap trailer park" theme but just didn't sound delicious. The food menu was fun but a little pricier than I'm used to paying for stuff like tater tots and the like. Also they were out of tots the night I was there so I went with a frito pie instead. It's probably one of the better deals on the menu as it's almost a meal for $6. I think they could be a little more inventive though. Where's the flaming Cheetos tacos? Or the bacon wrapped in sausage wrapped in bacon? It would be fun to see them do something more inventive with spaghettios than just serve them from a can. I do like that they have a theme, and the staff was all friendly. Service was quick. But, I'm just not sure there was anything on either menu to make me eager to come back. read more

At the end of every Yelp Community Manager Week we have a company party. And then when that ends where do we go? Butter. So this place is crowded and stuffy and just plain annoying. At first. Whenever I walk in I think, "oh lawd. Why am I here?" I inevitably fill with rage as I elbow my way through throngs of people to get to the bar where the line is forever long so I spend ages holding up a $20 in hopes of getting someone's attention. But then something magical happens. Someone hands me a jello shot. And then another. And then the bartender makes it over and takes my drink order (or someone next to me graciously lumps mine in with theirs so I can get a drink sooner) and I drink and I get tipsy (then full on drunk) and the people don't bother me, the faces are all awesome, the tunes rule and I get to spend some one one one time with folks I didn't get to chat with the week prior. And I feel warm and fuzzy and the tater tot cheese that ends up on my clothes doesn't bother me because I just LOVE EVERYONE. Thus is the magic of Butter. Every year I said, "no. I will not go." But then everyone goes and I want to see everyone so I go and then we end up having a great time. Drinks are expensive for a dive bar (for vodka and sunny D, anyway) and yes, the place is a dive. But it's fun! Hungry? They've got tots, cheesy tots, cheese sticks, corn dogs, Spaghettios (for real), cocktail franks and other delights like bacon shots and Twinkies (regular OR deep fried). Drinks vary from the aforementioned jello shots to the After School Special (odka & grape soda), Tang-Tini (Absolut Mandrin®, Triple Sec, OJ in a Tang® rimmed glass), and Tiki Trash (coconut rum and Hawaiian Punch). i could not stop hyping this place up to the group i was with group on new years and it was very difficult to get in :/ naturally, i expected to pay a cover charge because of the holiday. i also never expect that a bar will accept a card for the cover charge. however, the person at the front door accepting covers wasn't very straightforward about the entrance process. at first, they weren't accepting any new patrons. then, they just didn't accept card/ have an atm. finally, the cover price doubled and we were under the impression that if we didn't pay the original cover (that we budgeted for) then that we would have to pay the new cover upon return. the doorman did pointed us in the direction of the atm but by the time we returned the line was around the corner and we decided to go somewhere else. would probably come back but definitely not on a busy holiday where things can be more confusing. read more

Oh how I love me some Butter!!! Mmmmhmm :) This fun & quirky dive bar is an awesome place to hangout with friends for drinks and having a damn good time. They have delish cocktails to choose from. So far I've liked all of the ones I've tried: Tiki Trash, Prom Night Punch, Hubba Bubba, jello shots, and a Strawberry Whiskey one that I don't know what the name is. My favorite is the Tiki Trash because I love the hint of coconut. They also have a menu of yummy yet very unhealthy food to choose from like tatertots, fried twinkies, and lots more. But hey, you only live once, so live it up and just hit the gym the next day! So far I've been here twice. First time for St. Patty's and my second time was last night for Cinco de Mayo. Both very enjoyable times spent here with great company and great vibes. Sundays are their karaoke night so make sure to sign up early if you want to bust out your vocals to some tunes. Also, a shoutout to Jay for being such an awesome bartender! :) I think it's cash only at the place, but they do have a ATM machine in the corner in the back of the bar. Haha I don't even drink, but I love Butter. Why? Because I love to dance. And Butter is a nice place to dance. No, there's no real dance floor except in front of the bar and DJ, but the music does get going (at least on Thursday/Friday nights, not sure about others) and people do get moving. Butter is super cool! We had walked past numerous times to get to Safeway, but never stopped in. On the way back from an event at SoMa Streat Food Park (a block away) there was karaoke going on at Butter. This event is held on the first Wednesday of every month, and I think Butter's karaoke night (Roger Niner) seems to do it on the same schedule. We got there at about 9:30 and the place was completely empty, so we got into the karaoke lineup (a clipboard that gets passed around) and got right to work. Over the next hour, more and more people strolled in until the place felt pretty lively but not crowded. Sadly the kitchen was closed, so no deep fried junk food for us that time. Maybe next time! The space itself was super cool. From the giant lifted van at the front of the space to the projectors with the karaoke lyrics and all the wall decorations, it was one of the more unique places I've seen in SF. I was also really happy with the quality of the PA system. While it was loud, it also had a full bass extension and sounded great, and the DJ mixed the karaoke vocals and backing track for each performer so it always sounded good. I'd definitely recommend this place for karaoke, although I'm not positive on the schedule. I can't comment on the drinks, but the space itself is enthralling and I'll likely be back in the future. read more

Butter is an interesting place, to say the least. My immediate surroundings, walking into this bar on a Sunday night we're a bunch of people in fluffy bear suits twerking to a drunken rendition of a very vulgar song while Star Wars plays in the background. And I loved it. I'm going to file Butter under the category of "SF Places That Manage to Have An Aesthetic Without Being Super Pretentious". The theme is quite literally 'white trash', and as a girl who grew up in Glen Burnie, Maryland, they hit the nail on the freakin' head. For better or for worse, this place is so authentic it reminds me of my childhood. Their cocktails are all made with some sort of flavored vodka, and you can get Jell-O shots for like $3 (my favorite). They do a lot of karaoke, and they have a huge book of songs to pick from. This place is very clearly a super laid back bar with chill people who love to have a good time. I haven't tried the food yet, but I certainly will the next time I come here! read more

After having an awesome Friday night at Butter filled with strong R.V.s, great company, and throwbacks, I experienced that dreaded feeling... the one where you reach in your pocket and realize that your phone and/or wallet are missing. We searched the front and back and it looked like sadly it was a goner, thankfully the Butter team came to save the day! They promised to keep an eye out and the next morning I woke up to a message on Facebook from the owner, Vlad, saying his team had found and recovered my phone and wallet!! Vlad was able to help coordinate picking up my items and I was able to stop by the bar the next day when they opened. The bartender on staff, Jay, was super helpful and was able to get my items and made sure I was all set. My favorite dive bar! For sure! The whole set up is very much of a trailer park trash thing (just look at the cocktail names) and the decorations are made of trailer trucks. They have amazing drinks. I ordered four; the tangtini if you like vodka, the bitchin camaro if you like rum, and my favorite two the tiki trash and the latchkey tea. Also when you check in you get two free hugs from anyone which made me and my friend laugh. There's also free popcorn. Cheap strong drinks in a low-key atmosphere. Are you looking to get drunk off of one drink? Do you squeal at the sight of jello shots? Then this is your bar. It's outright down and dirty, but it is a ton of fun. The hoity toity San Franciscan drink establishments aren't really my scene. I may talk a big talk, but give me a choice between craft cocktails or a dive bar and 9/10 I'll choose the dive bar (this may also be because I'm incredibly stingy and spending $15 on a cocktail hurts my soul). I may not have gotten the normal Butter experience, since my work colleagues essentially took over this bar, but the experience I had was fantastic. The drink I got was basically alcoholic Dr. Pepper. It was so alcoholic that I couldn't finish it all (although the super alcoholic jello shots might have had something to do with that). After spending a couple days drinking lovingly crafted cocktails, this Dr. Pepper drink was a jolt to my system. It tasted like something I would make in college. Was it exquisite? No, but it got the job done. Butter has perfected the art of making jello shots as alcoholic as possible while still gelling together. Bravo, Butter. The atmosphere is dark and super low key. 4 Stars because somehow I didn't get an STD from spending a few hours at this bar. And that's a flippin' miracle. As you've noticed from previous reviews, this spot is divey as hell. I had the pleasure of arriving earlyish and leaving before 1am, so I may have gotten a toned down version of Butter. And I'm ok with that. It goes without saying, this place is dirty and grimy in exactly the way you need a dive bar to be dirty and grimy. Meaning, the floor is sticky as hell (info on why below), and the "decor" hasn't seen a dust rag in its lifetime. A surprising plus? The bathroom was actually alright. It looked rough, but the toilets themselves were clean and in good order. Again, I left before 1am, so take this with a grain of salt. Or Clorox bleach. The sticky floors are undoubtedly due to the many spilled drinks and Jell-O shots. The drinks aren't cheap, for a dive bar, but they are potent. I got one that was mostly alcohol with a squirt of some sickly sweet soda and I expected no less. Friends walked around handing out the Jell-O shots and despite warnings from friends (who also asked me to remind them to forgo the gelatinous shooters), I gulped down one or two. Heads-up: they are strong and just as sweet as you'd fear. I felt GREEEAAAT the next morning. /s Overall, no cover, quick drinks, exactly the atmosphere you'd expect, and plenty of ubers nearby to pick you and your drunk friends up. read more

Call it what it is guys. This is every one of your trailer park fantasies (well, maybe not EVERY one), all rolled up in to an SF appropriate package and put out there for all to admire and enjoy! If you're a city boy, this is where you go to experience life on the other side of the tracks. Divey as hell, you can safely bask in its trailerific atmosphere under the glow of some tinted yellow porch lights, while surrounded by shells of Winnebagos, and getting absolutely hammered on high octane jello shots (by the dozen) and sloppily mixed well drinks all night long! Did I forget to mention the 90's and 2000's tunes cranking out of the jukebox? Butter is all that and the bag of chips (which you can buy from the defunt kitchen trailer at the back of the bar)! You've gotta see it to believe it. Listen, this is a very YMMV kinda place. Don't come here solo, a post work happy hour or a sophisticated ladies night out. Real talk: you do not leave Butter the same way you walk in. Why? Maybe its the music, maybe its the jello shots, or maybe its the infectious atmosphere created by partying it up with 80+ coworkers and friends. There's a lot of hype around Butter, as this is a spot where my coworkers gather yearly to celebrate a week of learning. Now that I've survived an evening at butter, I understand the hype and excitement around this place. This white trash bar is fun at its finest. It is no frills- they serve 40s in paper bags to give you an idea of what you're getting into here. I'm not sure where else you can enjoy white trash themed libations while downing Jello Shots. Speaking of those Jello Shots - you know they're a bad idea, but Butter tempts you since they're so cheap and you may or may not turn to find someone holding a tray of them. You know you shouldn't but you grab one (or two) anyways. There's also food here. Did I have any of this college-style microwave and fried heaven? No. Was that a wise choice? Again, prob not. The place is pretty small, but in my opinion dive bars are best enjoyed when you have to weave through the crowds. Beware: this spot may bring out your inner Ke$ha - the drinks remind me of things you would concoct in college and the atmosphere is def one that encourages a good time. TiK ToK until next year. The hangover earned at butter rivaled my best, but it was worth it. Jello shots and 40s served in brown bags? That's the norm at butter, but I was classing it the hell up with some vodka sodas, though I thought it would be rude if I didn't do at least four jello shots while I was here.
