I was introduced to this venue via a sober friend who likes to enjoy a chill bar with good music. Madrone delivers just that on Motown Mondays. The weekly event draws a very mixed crowd of friendly folks who appreciate smooth grooves and classics while respecting the space of those who like to dance or sit and vibe in the back. We came here on a Saturday night after dinner. It was one of the hot spots that my husband wanted to check out. We went there a bit early and they had a live band performing. We went in and kinda hoped they would have some dance music but it was more of a chill atmosphere. There was no line outside and the bouncer checked our ids quickly. The outside and interior had some unique decor. If I would've had more time I probably would've gone around to see all the art. The bartender was pretty friendly and after perusing the bar offerings, we settled on some shots/sips of Fortaleza (Reposado) and Siete Leguas (Anejo). Honestly, the backbar and menu was pretty extensive and the prices were reasonable--I've definitely paid more in Vegas on the Strip and this spot had better selections. There were few spots to sit (on a stool) or at a table, and people were just milling about. I have no doubt that this place gets packed the later it gets. Honestly, I'd wanna come back and check out this spot when it's a bit busier and different music because I bet it's a great spot for dancing and hanging out. All the times I have been here have been after the restaurant hours, when the club starts going. So I have never tried their food. But the drinks definitely leave to be desired when compared to similarly priced drinks in other venues. Don't even dare try a mocktail, you'll be paying for the same price of a drink for some soda with syrup. The space itself is nice and can be a good spot to dance a bit. If you arrive before the party starts (usually starts at 9pm), you don't have to pay the $10 entrance fee. read more

Cute little place with an eclectic, kinda gritty vibe. I've always enjoyed the art installations in the windows outside and appreciate what they're doing with the place altogether. I ordered a Black Manhattan and got served right away. A performer was playing jazz on the piano for a while which was a fun touch, even for a slow night in there. Cute bar, dimly lit inside, covered in art (rotating exhibits listed on their website). Was fairly empty on a Sunday early evening, and service was fast and friendly. We got the Operation Witchcraft, with a licoricey taste and just a hint of absinthe, and the Herbie Hancock, a delightful and refreshing cocktail which delivered on the watermelon flavor. I would definitely return just for this, but they have a good amount of other tasty-looking drinks on the menu as well. I'll also be back to experience live music here. Cool spot. read more

I went here for the bar's Motown Mondays. It was fine, but I won't be coming here again. The Motown music was exclusively Motown. The DJ played "Come Together" by the Beatles. Also, some Motown songs I had never heard of, but still they were pleasant. I got the Lola Mule, which was tasty. However, it was at least half ice. That was really frustrating. I came on a Saturday night and the music was okay, lots of R&B and rap throwbacks which I guess was catering to the older crowd. Pretty full when we got there a little before 12am, but it was emptying within an hour of getting there. By the time we left, the crowd was 90% dudes and some of them were being creepy and hovering around my friend and I. This place was heavily recommended by some of my friends, so maybe I was here on an off night? Still, it would probably take a lot to get me back here lol. read more

Too nice a night to stay home & stare at Netflix- time for a stroll down Divisadero, without a clue where we're going. Passing the corner of Fell & Divisadero we heard some Slavic style live music and the stars aligned. Got the last table, perfect view of the band & some guy having his own personal dance party. The bartenders are super friendly. The crowd was really diverse age wise, 20 somethings crowded around the bar- the grey hairs digging the music. There's a vintage half circle upholstered sofa in the corner that looked like someone's satellite living room. Three little dogs, people coming & going, their own personal Cheers. Madrone takes the dive bar concept to another level. It's arty, funky, and wouldn't scare off your sister from Indiana. An evening like this, falling into Madrones, is another reason why I love San Francisco- serendipity around every corner. read more

Dropped in while we were waiting for our reservation at a restaurant, nobody was outside checking IDs so we went in. While we were waiting to get drink a guy who was in a corner watching the game finally noticed us and came up to ask for our IDs. We gave them to him and each ID he was moving it around and looking up and down at us, like we were bothering him or giving him a fake. When he got to our friend who had a temporary, which we told him at the beginning, he literally kept flipping it over and shaking it like it was fake and he started getting aggressive with her and interrogating her. She proceeded to hold the temporary cause it literally seemed like he was gonna rip it. She explained that it was hers and she wanted it back. We were just going to leave and go somewhere else. He started to raise his voice with her, my friend and I had to step in and de-escalate the situation. We told him that it wasn't that serious we would just leave. Extremely unprofessional, he wasn't even at the door so we just went in. We weren't trying to sneak in. For a dive bar he was on an extremely power trip for someone not even doing their job. read more

This is an okay bar. When going to a bar, I'm interested in the drinks and the ambience. 1. Drinks The drinks have to taste good. I'm a sucker for cocktails. The Herbie Hancock was good but the other drinks were meh. 2. Ambience The bar decor was nice and there was music playing. That's awesome. My bf and I ended up stopping here on accident. We had plans to hit 2 other spots but parked right outside this bar and stopped in for a drink and never left. They have live music so often they have a calendar posted with all their different events. It's a dive bar with bartenders that are actually nice to you. I've only tried a couple of the cocktails they have on the wall, but if that's not your thing they'll make your requested drink since they have a full bar and they also offer beer! The music is so good every time I've gone. By 9:30 there's a line to get in, they usually have a cover. The drinks are fair priced and they have an outdoor area as well. Inside gets super hot when it gets packed later in the night. If you're feeling hungry you can order food to the bar, just make sure you have a stamp so you can get back in. Check out the calendar, they have music for everyone. If you're not into a dark, crowded room just go a little earlier. read more

Hard not to love this spot, if you know you know, am I right? These folks been keeping the same vibe for as long as I've been in town. I used to hop between here and the Boom Boom Room 8 years ago when both places were hot. Now, boom boom is only going patter patter but you can still see plenty of great people here on Sat-Mon. The bar is summed up by two things: decent drinks, better DJs. The place is essentially one medium sized dance hall, with the bar attached. Since pandemic they added an outside area I think is pretty decent, but tbh it kinda made it so people aren't all stuck inside which has the side effect of spreading people out. Madrone shines when everyone is packed in, dancing, sweating, getting their vibe on. Unlike a lot of other places if you were here on a good day they'd be playing some killer 90s bangers, and nobody would be giving a fuck who they were dancing with/on. The crowd is still there, which if you a single somebody in the neighborhood, the trendy and cool people fuck with this spot, you'll definitely meet people worth meeting and/or girls worth "meeting". Lol the covers aren't as bad as mission now, so they still coming under the norm price wise. If you a gangster you lock down the only real table in the place at the end. You need about 4-5 people to really lock it down but if you snag it you the prince of the place all night. read more

The best part of Madrone was the bouncer! I bet that's something you've never heard about a bar -- but I'm serious. We waited in line for about 30 minutes to get in, and the bouncer at the door was quite friendly and made sure our group all got in together. Cover was $10. They take Venmo, which was nice. But that's about $1 for each minute we stayed. It was so crowded inside, we could barely make our way to the one bar. We left after 10 minutes. VIBE: Divey bar that wants to be a nightclub. Way too crowded on a Saturday night with limited ventilation. Not really much art to speak of, despite the name. A few people were trying to dance, but too crowded. MUSIC: Varies by DJ, but usually something fairly basic / throwback. AUDIO/ACOUSTICS: College frat house level audio quality. DRINKS: Beer, wine, generic mixed drinks. Cocktail menu did not impress. About $12 each for mixed drinks. FOOD: None. COVER: $10 on Sat nights. read more

Good place to get strong drinks. Madrone has a row a paintings on one wall and various sculptures from the ceiling. The effect is somewhat ruined by the four televisions they have about the bar, but it's understandable that they want to cater to the sports crowd. I tried my wife's cocktail and ordered a beer for myself. Her cocktail was quite strong which could be a theme for this bar. The music was fairly loud as well, but that's not surprising for this type of bar. Overall, I think this bar is an interesting visit and would subsequently recommend it. read more

I just stumbled upon this beautiful artsy bar when I ditched emporium sf for the first time. As an artist who appreciates paintings and music, this bar provides you everything (and maybe better). The vibe is amazing and they have live piano music every Friday. It starts as a live music bar and turns into a dance bar and both aspects of it after lit.
