The food was fine, diner food. The ambiance is so dated but very nostalgic. The waitress was great very friendly.

First timer at Buttercup Pantry Resturant, and wow what an experience! The owners Tony & Sammi are so attentive to each guest/staff...it really shows that they're in the business of people. Felt welcome and cared for from the moment I came in the door! I didn't know what to order and was given great recommendations but decided to go with one of their most popular chicken, bacon, avocado melt sandwich with fries and a Coke Zero on the side! I loved the flavor and quality of the meat/produce definitely a perfect balance of both and such a great added touch with the Parmesan crusted bread...totally hits the spot! I also want to mention, they have the greatest decor in each nook and cranny...it awesome and definitely a sight to see! Highly recommend this place for any time of day. Entered the restaurant and though there were two waitresses near the front I was not greeted or acknowledged. I was the only one waiting. Finally after 3 minutes someone come to seat me. The pancakes were a little dry and the amount of syrup could fill a thimble. Maybe a little more since I'm paying for it? When I went up front to pay, two young women were there. They looked so tired and again, no greeting. Maybe in Placerville greeting is outlawed? It was only 830 am and half filled. I paid and left a decent tip but next time I'll try Mel's Diner next door. Their food is amazing!! All homemade. Their breakfast really is second to none, their burger options are excellent they even have alternative patties for the non meat eaters and those are also good. The Soup guy: his homemade soups in my opinion are legendary His chicken enchilada, to chicken gumbo, clam chowder, corn chowder, cheesy broccoli, to veggie soup!!!!! He hits it out the park!! Back in the early 90's Buttercup Pantry was a small chain of restaurants. I know this because I used to work in the Vacaville location. To the best of my knowledge, this is the last restaurant operating under this name. My how things have changed! The menu here offers much more than the old menu, and the decor and ambiance has changed significantly! This is a really fun place to stop with good food and pretty quick service. I ordered the Salty Dog (something that never would have made the old chain's menu) it's a giant beef frankfurter, wrapped in bacon, battered, and then deep fried, served on a garlic French roll with bbq sauce on the side. It comes with a dollop of potato salad, that was pretty tasty, and a bag of chips, which I upgraded to fries. This was worth trying once, but at my age I think I'll order something a little lighter next time. My daughter had clam chowder in a bread bowl and was quite happy with the soup. Our other girl has the smaller portion of fettuccine Alfredo and commented that it was very good. Her dinner salad that came ahead of the meal looked very nice with quite a number of toppings... Overall good experience. Drinks were not monitored very well, but other than that the service was pretty good. Next time we're in Placerville, we'll definitely consider visiting the Buttercup Pantry! read more

Stopped in for lunch with my dad on our way to Tahoe and were enchanted by the antique diner aesthetic. We were promptly greeted and seated in a booth. We knew pretty quickly what we wanted, and our server took our food and drink order at the same time. My dad's side salad came out quickly, and he was very happy with the freshness. The only note he made was that the onions were strong, but were pretty picky about onions so I wouldn't fault them for that. We did wait a while for our food, but we did order pretty quickly after sitting down and weren't in any hurry. The food came out VERY hot and fresh, which is always a great thing on the books for my chef father! His meatloaf and mashed potatoes had a great flavor, and the senior plate was a perfect serving size for him. My hot Ruben sandwich was wonderful and I could tell the fries were fresh and cut from whole potatoes. Overall a very pleasant experience and we will be happy to come back! read more

Honestly, such a cute little find and the service was amazing, however the food was lacking in flavor a bit. My family was driving up to Tahoe and stopped by for dinner. We did have our pup with us and asked if they would let us sit outside (knowing that they totally didn't have to accommodate us). It was a pretty hot day but we were totally willing to sit outside because of our dog and the waitress was SOOO sweet and said that it was too hot outside and we can just have a booth further away from the rest of the customers. We were so grateful because they totally did not have to do that for us. Everything we ordered came out pretty fast and the portions were LARGE...however the flavor was just lacking a litttttle bit. Usually my family thinks restaurant food can be too salty but we actually thought the food lacked salt ... However the pie we got was VERY delicious! Great diner to eat at on our way to Apple Hill. Right when you walk in you will see an eclectic country style decor all over. Old everything! Pretty neat. We ordered the Seafood platter, meat loaf & blueberry muffins. All meals come with soup or salad (not pictured). I got the soup (Chicken Tortilla) & my hubby got the house salad. This place is super cute! It is loaded with antique memorabilia that is tastefully displayed throughout the restaurant. Parking can be difficult as it has a small parking lot and is located downtown. It is a popular breakfast spot, so have patience on finding parking. Service was excellent and the menu has something for everyone. I enjoyed my coffee while perusing the menu. I went with the bacon/sausage egg breakfast with sourdough toast and hash browns. Everything was Apollo good! Honey had the French toast breakfast which he absolutely loved! The only ding is the orange juice. For some reason it was really bitter tasting, so neither of us finished it. We definitely would hit this place up again next time we visit the area. read more

On this Sunday afternoon, every restaurant on historic Main Street was loud, but we drove on to the end of the Main Street and found this charming place, tucked away, visibly but unexpected. The food was absolutely amazing. Large servings of really good food. The prices shockingly reasonable. The interior was very well decorated in nostalgia and fun to explore. The pies are to die for. Had to get one to take home. But best of all the service was unbeatable. I think our servers name was Cheyenne, and she was so great. Over the top wonderful. When you walk into the restaurant, the first thing you will notice is a lot of old-fashioned signs and billboards from very old products from the early 20th century, including an old Sears catalog and old-fashioned foam booth with original rotary dial pay telephone. I really enjoyed seeing all this nostalgic decorum. I ordered an omelette with a side of hashbrowns and an Arnold Palmer for drink. The food tasted fresh and was excellent! The weight staff was very attentive in making sure that I had enough to drink with my breakfast and that I was enjoying my breakfast. Took my family for breakfast. Hadn't been here since 2weeks. Sat down after a 20 min wait. Was seated near a party of 30. Waitress took order and waited. Food arrived warm but not hot. Gravy was terrible. Too much flower. It was lumpy and not warm. Pancakes were not warm and hard. Couldn't use my fork to cut into had to use a knife and hold down the pancake to cut the hotcakes. Told Waitress. Manager visited us and said the hot chocolate was removed. The manager saw we didn't eat the food. I had to insist he remove the Pancakes. I paid for the $55 breakfast and not returning. Too bad. Placerville had a great restaurant for breakfast 2 weeks prior. read more

This review isn't really based on the food, although it was excellent as usual! (We were there for opening day about 40 years ago and hundreds of times since.) It is based on their graciousness when I caught an error in the bill from a visit about 3 weeks ago. Anyway, someone had inadvertently combined our order with someone else's . Probably during a shift change and/or a computer glitch. End result, I saw we had been overcharged about $30 for two items we didn't order or receive. So I told our server and placed our order, prepared for the standard, "Oh, we're sorry. If only you'd said something . . ." Instead, one of the new owners/managers suddenly appeared, apologized profusely, and said that whatever we ordered would be on them. Wine, food, whatever! We, of course, didn't take advantage of that generous offer, having just hoped we would get credit for the $30. Done! Buttercup Pantry has therefore retained their coveted "Ben & Gigi Gay Seal of Approval"! And the meal was excellent! If you haven't been there recently, drop by. In days long past, every time I would pass through Placerville I would stop at one of the many restaurants that offered a Hangtown Fry. After returning to California from Arizona for 25 years I happened to be passing through Placerville and decided to partake of a Hangtown Fry. I was disappointed to find that only one restaurant still offered my beloved Hangtown Fry. It was NOT the Hangtown Fry that I remembered. It is awful!!! The biggest change they made that totally ruined it is substituting fresh oysters with canned smoked oysters. I did not finish it. It may be a good restaurant otherwise. Stay away from the Hangtown Fry advertised so prominently on their building. read more

First restaurant we've ever walked out of after being served. Waitress acted less than thrilled to be waiting on us. We ordered with only one request, that our hash browns be a little crispy. When our meals arrived, not only were they only cooked on one side and raw but the waitress had the audacity to tell us that the restaurant is busy and the cooks are being rushed. We love this restaurant and if you have never been there you must give it a try. Food is excellent and the service is top notch. Krystal was so attentive and made our stay extra special. I was so excited to get a morning date out of my husband, and picked Buttercup Pantry to eat. It had been a while, but we have eaten here before. It was busy when we walked in, as expected. We were told there was a 15 minute wait- no problem, we can wait. After about 20 minutes we noticed names of people who arrived after us were being seated. The gentleman at the front also must have noticed (or overheard us asking each other if we were being skipped) and told us he would find us a table. Perfect. We were seated in and placed our order. About 40 minutes later, as we discussed just going ahead and going somewhere else to eat, our waitress finally brought our food. Then, after about another 5 minutes, she brought us silverware so we could eat it. My French toast was cold and was burned on the bottom and each bite had the burn aftertaste. My husband said his sauce on his food had barely any flavor and his hash browns were barely cooked. I won't be asking for a date here any time soon. read more

Been wanting to try this place for YEARS. For whatever reason we are at Mel's and Carrows when it was there but never this place. So glad I finally did try it out. My great aunt moved there recently and wanted to see her so going to breakfast was perfect. This place is super cute(yes, I said cute lol) with lots of old things around the place. I noticed the glass case with all of the pies they sell, looked sooooo good. Service was very nice and attentive. She ordered French toast and bacon. I ordered the skillet with gravy on top and my dad got a Denver omelette. Food was GOOD. All of us enjoyed our food very much and all of us ate more than expected. Lol I got a coffee and put some cream in it and it was curdled so they brought me a new coffee and cream. Problem solved. We already said when we do breakfast again we will be coming back here. This is now my number 1 go to spot for breakfast! My husband and I came in on a Sunday around 11-11:30 AM. There was packed and there was a very short wait (5 min?). The hostess was a super nice and sweet. Our waitress was also very friendly, funny, and super attentive. Once sat, our waitress greeted us and got us coffee and water. I decided on the "crabby in the morning" benedict. But instead of scrambled eggs, I asked for poached eggs to make it a true benedict. This was delicious! We are Bay Area transplants and the breakfast was reminiscent of Bills Cafe. High Quality food and ingredients. The crab cakes were so good and so tasty. Hollandaise sauce was perfect and the eggs were also poached perfectly. My husband ordered the Belgian waffle combo with a side of hash browns. Everything was cooked perfect for his meal. He's normally very picky about this waffles, but this one passed the test! Light, fluffy, and the perfect amount of crunch. My husband and I love to get breakfast on Sundays and this is now our new go to spot. Absolutely amazing! read more

In town being touristy, almost didn't check Buttercup Pantry out due to their yelp reviews, but .... Well, they seemed to be the best option in town later in the evening. They have lots of delicious desserts as you walk in the door. We were seated promptly, our drinks arrived quickly. Service was excellent throughout our entire experience. Very prompt on refilling beverages and checking in on us. The BLAST (BLT with avocado & Swiss) was pretty great! The bacon seemed freshly cooked, not too crunchy but perfect for a sandwich. We shared fried zucchini, which was also delicious. And finally, we shared a peach dessert that tasted pretty good. My only complaint was that the peaches seemed canned - they were really sweet and just had a canned texture to them. Great experience & good food! read more

We were in town for a meeting. DW saw the truck and decided to pull in. OMG, what a wonderful surprise. The staff is amazing, friendly, welcoming and really efficient - without feeling rushed. The place is spotless. I've been to restaurants with Michelin stars that were not this clean. The food is good. Really, really good! The portions are huge. As good as it was, and it was, neither of us could finish. On the day we were there, they had a large group that was seated just before us. Sad to say this place was very disappointing. It's a spot for old people with no taste buds. My husband and I had the turkey croissant sandwich with sweet potato fries and the steak and eggs. The sandwich was a cold sando and the fries came with no seasoning slightly cold too. The steak reminded us of sizzlers, the hash browns were soaked in oil and not cooked all the way through. Service was bare minimum not once asked us how the food was tasting. Probably because they know it's lame. Ambience wasn't any better, the woman bathroom was so dirty I couldn't use it because the toilet seat had poop and the floors were gross and the sink to wash your hands looked like it hasn't been cleaned since the gold rush. read more
