We split the steak, carrots, and fingerling potatoes with an amazing sauce! There was enough for us to split it into two. The wine was amazing from local wineries, the waitress was sweet and friendly and had grear service. Everyone was dressed super nice & when we asked for recommendations of wine with our dinner, they had a great pairing. We wish we could've checked outside, but there was a wedding going on. Unique restaurant in a historic area that serves up traditional American fare. The main seating area is actually downstairs - there is one room that my friend calls the "cave" room, it opens up to an actual mine that was used. So if you like those Raiders of the Lost Ark vibes, then you would like sitting next to the mine for sure. It's roped off but you can hear the water dripping and it is naturally cool. The structure was originally built as a hotel in 1853 and has been well preserved. I ordered their Smith Flat House salad ($10) and the Jambalaya Risotto ($34) which consisted of Cajun-marinated prawns, lobster meat, Andouille sausage, grilled sweet corn with saffron chicken risotto. Definitely had a bit of a kick to it, the risotto was done well. My pet peeve is mushy risotto, it needs to have a slight bite to it which this one had thankfully. Love the fact that this place serves up local wines -- I couldn't recall the wine I had and they do not have their wine menu on their website. If you have the opportunity to visit, I'd recommend a glass of red from Starfield (winery up the road). read more

They built their restaurant around an old miner's tunnel. You can peer inside and see it. Very rustic and authentic. Our server was this sweet older lady. (I don't get her name unfortunately). Service was quick. We ordered the following: - Tuscan Roasted Garlic pizza - Marmellata pizza (probably my favorite pizza. The flavor was so good. Usually I have ranch with my pizza, don't even need it for this one). - Turkey bacon avocado sando - blue cheese mushroom burger Portions were pretty good. Everything tasted good. Our first time visiting this place. We ordered wings, bread and pork belly with scallop, all were really delicious. The ranch & butter was home made. The beginning food was made fast. Our main dishes were: choice chef fish, black & white and bacon cheddar cheeseburger. The main dishes took way longer to prepare, it was almost closing time at that. They messed up on the cheeseburger and made the patty charcoal. But they remade it within 10 minutes. Ordered some desert as well but it was decent. The waiter was kind, excellent service they provided. I wish the food was provided faster than waiting for an hour. The music was decent as well! Very lovely voice. We cannot thank Mason, Shelby, Maria, Chef Scott, and the entire Smith Flat House team enough for going above and beyond for our wedding. Smith Flat catered our 130-person wedding at Lake + Wood, less than 10 minutes from their restaurant, and the entire experience was exceptional from start to finish. In April, they hosted a bridal tasting event (our wedding was in September), where we sampled a wide variety of their menu. Maria and Chef Scott worked closely with us to customize the buffet to our tastes, and the final menu completely exceeded our expectations. Wedding food is rarely memorable, but the pistachio-crusted white fish stole the show--and the prime rib carving station was a huge hit as well. We received countless compliments from our guests! Beyond the food, their bartenders were phenomenal--fast, friendly, and able to accommodate last-minute requests without a hitch. The team also handled umbrella and table rentals, and their setup crew and wait staff brought such great energy to the day. Everyone seemed genuinely happy to be there, which made the experience even better. At the end of the night, they even gathered up all of our things and brought them back to the restaurant for us, so we could simply pick them up the next day. We didn't have to worry about a single part of the clean-up, which was such a gift. The night before, we hosted our pre-wedding happy hour under the restaurant's outdoor gazebo. What could have been a simple beer-and-pizza gathering was transformed into something elevated and special thanks to their thoughtful presentation and care. We stopped by this place around 11:30 AM on our way to Apple Hill and were directed to the lovely outdoor courtyard. It's dog-friendly, and they even brought our pup a bowl of water, which was a nice touch. My wife ordered the Caprese Salad, but she thought it was just okay. She felt it needed a little something extra--maybe more balsamic vinegar would've made a difference. I went for the bacon cheddar burger, along with potato leek soup and a side of French fries. The burger was massive and packed with flavor, plus you could tell the ingredients were fresh. The fries and soup also tasted homemade, which was great! The only hiccup was that the soup arrived a bit cold, but when I mentioned it to our server, she quickly took care of it. After checking in on Yelp, we got a complimentary chocolate bread pudding to share, and there was even enough left for us to take home--definitely a sweet bonus! The service was super friendly, and everything came out in a reasonable time. I really enjoyed my food and left feeling pleasantly stuffed (maybe too stuffed, haha!). Overall a nice restaurant to have dinner in the Placerville area. The ambiance is really nice and it felt like we were having dinner in a cave or mine if you are seated inside. Service was really good as well. As for the food, we may have ordered the wrong items. Since we had a late lunch and wasn't really hungry yet for dinner, we order "lighter" entrees which was just okay. We ordered pasta dishes and the risotto. My husband and I just got married last night (1.10.2026), and the very first thing we wanted to do this morning was share our incredible experience with Smith Flat House. We found this venue on a whim and immediately fell in love with the Glasshouse for our ceremony. If you are even thinking twice about booking this venue--don't. They will make your day more than you could ever imagine. Because we planned our wedding in only six weeks, we opted for their coordination services, which was the best decision we could have made. Shelby, the lead coordinator, is a total shooting star. She handled every detail perfectly and also did our flowers, which were absolutely stunning. Between Shelby and Maria, the venue coordinator, the communication was seamless. Maria ensured every question was answered and every invoice was clear, making the entire process stress-free. The service and food were truly out of this world. We chose the plated service instead of a buffet for our small, intimate wedding, and it was incredible. I have been to so many weddings where the food is subpar, but Smith Flat House knocked it out of the park. Even our cake, which was made in-house, was adorable and tasted amazing! What stood out most was the exceptional level of professionalism from the entire staff. They genuinely cared about our experience from the moment we signed the contract. On the morning of the wedding, the attentiveness was unmatched; two young men helped us with refreshments, set up heaters since the doors were open, and even offered to set up music for us. That level of care remained consistent until the very end of the night. We are still in shock, not only by how beautiful our day was but by the heart and dedication shown by everyone at Smith Flat House. This is a great option for anyone looking for a nicer date night or dinner with family. We showed up on a busy Saturday night with no reservation, and they were able to seat us with little wait. My husband and I were celebrating my birthday, so we splurged on wine, salads, and two incredible staple entrees; the lamb shank and the cioppino. I am a bit of a cioppino connoisseur... if cioppino is on the menu, I have to try it wherever we go. I was not expecting it when we got there, and so the $66 price tag really hit me in the gut. But, alas, a tradition is a tradition. I am only writing this review because I need to tell you, dear reader, that the $66 price tag is worth it - a HUGE portion of live Mediterranean mussels, Manila clams, snow crab legs, marinated prawns and North Atlantic lobster meat served in a classic tomato-fennel cioppino broth with grilled house-made Italian bread. Could easily be split between two. In all my cioppino tasting (and cooking) ventures, never have I had lobster included, and let me tell you, it was a game changer. If you love seafood, this is a great dish. Now, I will share that while the food was delicious, the service was a bit challenging on the night we went. Our server (bless his heart) was struggling to remember orders and deliver on our asks: when we ordered wine, he said "got it!" and then returned 10 minutes later asking if we wanted to order wine. 15 minutes after that, we ordered salads, and my husband kindly asked for an ingredient to be omitted (pickled onions), and he said "no problem!" - when the salads arrived, mine was wrong and his had those darned pickled onions. We were the first customers to arrive for lunch and we were prominently greeted by Mateo, their Australian shepherd dog. What a sweet and friendly dog! Since it was a nice day, we sat outside in the courtyard and Mateo stayed underneath our table the majority of the time. We were both craving pizza, so that's what we ordered. I got the small Smith Flat Combo for $16 - Pepperoni, Italian sausage, olives, caramelized onions, mushrooms, mozzarella cheese, and house-made marinara. It came with approx 8 small slices. It's made in a brick often, and it was phenomenal! Hubby got the small Tuscan Roasted Garlic for $15 - Grilled chicken breast, red onion, imported Tuscan Pecorino, fresh herbs, mozzarella, and creamy roasted garlic sauce. Fine dining in Placerville? You bet! Smith Flat House is off the beaten path but locals know it well so you'll need a reservation. The first thing you see is a renovated building from the late 1800's. They have outdoor dining but we were led to the basement area where it was cozy and you can still see old mine shafts from long gone days. Staff were very friendly and attentive, you felt like you were invited into their home. Our party of 5 were very comfortable and started with glasses of Zin. The soup of the day was a hearty stew made with stout beer. I didn't try it but it looked good and I was told that it was very tasty. We ordered the house salad and asked for it to be split so it could be shared. They obliged and brought out two servings that looked amazing. Good portions even though it was a split plate. Entrees included the Jambalaya Risotto. Exceptional! A mouth full of flavor and a hearty portion. I'm told that ALL the risotto's are a sure bet here. The Lamb Shank was perfectly cooked and fell off the bone. Accompanied by asparagus and mashed potatoes. One of their signature dishes. My entree choice was the Bourbon Chicken. A++! Large chicken breast coated with a pecan crust, mashed potatoes and grilled veggies. The best part was the bourbon sauce! I wish I could have taken a pint home! We also had the Wild Mushroom Bordelaise. The red wine Demi Marsala sauce was another "to die for" sauce. Amazingly delicious. Dessert was the chocolate chip bread pudding. Yum Yum! Why they sit children and babies in this small very enclosed space is unknown. At beginning of our dinner had a toddler that kept dropping stuff and screaming. Which I get they need to eat, but sit them in a more open space. Food quality/taste was very good, plating on entrees appears messy. Interesting history of this place and worth a stop. We arrived for lunch on a Saturday. There was only one other couple out on the very large patio. It's a nice setup and really caters to the outdoor dining experience, with a big structure to cover a portion of the outdoors and the remaining scattered tables have umbrellas. Nice. The house itself is old 'gold country' kitchy, with the farmhouse/depot style and décor. Upstairs you will find some tables and a bar. Downstairs is another space with a bar area and tables. This space is below grade with stone floor and walls, and a low ceiling. Pretty cool space. Our lunch was good, but I think the Sunday brunch would be better based on the menu we saw. Our server was super friendly and attentive. We enjoyed the caprese salad and a Smith Flatt pizza. Both were good, maybe the heirlooms could have been more ripe, that's all. What a lovely place! When we moved up here a year ago, and the previous owner of our house recommended Smith Flat for dinner. It only took us a year, but it was our 33 anniversary, and we wanted something nice, that we hadn't tried yet. Winner winner on this place! The outside seating is charming and feels like your at a family backyard party. The live music was exactly what we'd hoped for with Frank Sinatra type renditions. The lighting was romantic. The service, we had Shelby, was awesome! She recommended the risotto, which was generously filled with tender lobster and some shrimp! Delightful! My husband got the lamb stand and was very happy. The Valentine's Day experience was awful. Without even getting into the food and drink, which was marginally edible at best, the ambiance was that of a backyard wedding reception put together at the last minute. We were seated at rickety folding chairs that felt like they would collapse at any minute. The round table was so small it could barely hold our plates. Silverware fell off them more than once. The tables were also plastic I think - a table next to us was so wobbly the wait staff was trying to shove napkins under it to stabilize it before finally moving the couple. Ok, the food. The spinach and artichoke dip was less a dip and more a casserole. There was one tiny piece of lobster in the bisque. The medium filet was well done and the medium rare was medium. The carrots that came with the filet were not much more cooked than the raw carrots that came with the not-a-dip dip. Thank heavens I didn't make this reservation as I'm pretty sure I would have spent the night on the couch after for having forgotten it was Valentine's Day. read more
