We extended a trip over the hill for some downtime in gold country. We found this place driving by. It appeared to be a pretty nice place so we made reservations for the next night. We arrived bed on time and we were treated promptly. The inside is dark wood steakhouse vibe. They did have a full bar, which is a plus after drinking wine all day. We were seated on the patio which was covered with a n open air tent. The service was great. The cocktails were decent. My filet was just alright. The loaded potato was good. The pork chop had great flavor, but was fatty. This is the best you are going to get in Pville.

Recently visited for lunch with a group. We had reservations, but didn't really need since there was plenty of tables available. We were seated immediately once entering. We all ordered a round of drinks, some apps, and an entree. Their drinks were strong! Even with eating, we were feeling the buzz after one drink. The food was good. The turnip fries were different but tasty. We will definitely be back again.

I have been to The Independent many times, and I honestly can't remember a single bad meal!! everything is consistently so good. The menu always feels thoughtful and elevated without being pretentious, and it's one of those rare places where you can order confidently without overthinking it. The food is flavorful, beautifully presented, and clearly made with care. Whether I'm grabbing a casual meal or meeting friends, it always feels like a special experience. The cocktails and drinks are also on point, balanced, creative, and actually taste as good as they look. Service has always been warm and attentive, and the vibe is perfect for everything from date night to a relaxed dinner out. It's the kind of restaurant you recommend to out-of-town friends when you want to impress them with the local scene. If you're looking for a place that's consistently delicious and feels like a treat every time, The Independent is it.

On a cold Friday night in the middle of Apple Hill was this boisterous packed restaurant. We called ahead and made reservations. Even though its cold they have outdoor seating with heaters. The place was pavked. We started with drinks at the bar. Had yhe Naked and famous very smokey and strong with Mezcal and was perfection. Their cadillac Margarita is no joke and was well served and tasty. We then moved to our outdoor table and had the calamari, and the prawns. Every thing was delicious and served in a timely manner. Our server very attentive and nice. We had the salmon, filet mignon. The mashed potatoes decadent and creamy the broccolini cooked perfectly and we paired witj a glass of red wine. The drinks are more on the pricey side but served well. We had a great time and enjoyed every bite. A local favorite. Parking is a little difficult during peak hours.

Nice find. Live in EDH. Went to Placerville to get out of the recent fog and cold. Have heard and read about The Independent and eateries in the area. This choice did not disappoint. The seating was well protected from elements. Heaters throughout. Got to idea that pets were not allowed in the tent were the fireplace is. Although our area had plants and decorations for the holidays. Made reservations day before for patio seating with our dog. Seated immediately. Service was a little slow one both beginning and end. That was okay at the beginning because we chatted with other pet owners and enjoyed our cocktails. After plates where removed our server did return. Had to go inside to settle tab. Food was delicious. I had the ban mi. Great flavors and wonderful fresh sliced jalapeños. Other plate as chipotle grilled cheese with caramelized onions. Turnip fries......have never had. Though love them in roasts. As fries....the BOMB. Cocktail. Had the slow burn. Sounded good being cold. Did not disappoint. The rums and the nutmeg warm the cocktails and myself. Very pleasing. Three stars because of today's service.

What a find. Right on Main Street with a great atmosphere. The space feels classy without being quiet and they had a great playlist. Everyone was friendly and the patio was warm and comfortable with plenty of heaters. The food was a mix of traditional and creative and everything we tried was excellent. The cocktails were both familiar and unique and every drink was great. Our server Trevor was attentive and made the whole visit a pleasure. The manager or owner even checked in to make sure we were having a good night. This restaurant really impressed me and I highly recommend it!

Went here for dinner with a group of 12. Food and service was exceptional. They have indoor and outdoor seating available. We sat inside. Great food and wine options. We started off with a salad which was good, not over powering with dressing. Ahi tower was yum perfectly seasoned. Main dish we shared the Hawaiian ahi crust which was a deconstructed sushi on a plate. Concept was good and did not disappoint. Portion of meat vs sushi rice was good. Dessert bread pudding was yummy. Warm and not very sweet. Our server was awesome and fun. He had great recommendations on food and drinks.

this is my second time at the independent, and i will say that i love that they use fresh and local produce, and high quality meat and fish. it totally enhances the dining experience! so lets get into the details: FOOD if you're an app person, HIGHLY recommend the summer caprese salad. i believe it's seasonal, but wow.. those tomatoes were SO sweet with the perfect texture. i could've had a plate of those alone. the mozzarella with the fresh basil and maldon sea salt, topped with 12 year aged balsamic?! if your mouth isn't watering reading that, go ahead and read it again the caesar had the most amazing homemade croutons & the garlic chips are out of this world. the only reason i gave 4 stars is because my salmon was overcooked; it was pretty dry and $45, that's really unfortunate the steak was cooked perfect and the mashed potatoes were absolutely divine! SERVICE Jake was our server and took excellent care of us. everyone made sure our waters were never empty, and made sure we were all set throughout the night! SEATING lots of indoor and outdoor seating. great for small intimate couples or large parties! the outside seating area is pretty large, and was perfect for our evening. PARKING there's a small lot adjacent to the restaurant but plenty of street parking and a big lot nearby! overall, we'll absolutely be back, and crossing our fingers (& toes!) that the caprese is still around!

Wednesday, August 28, 2024 After spending the morning at Apple Hill, we decided to stop in Placerville for a late lunch. We didn't really have a restaurant in mind, so we drove along Main Street. We spotted The Independent restaurant, and a memory of a good meal there in the past prompted us to stop. The small parking lot was full, but we were able to snag a parking spot directing in front of the restaurant. We arrived around 2:00, so most of the lunch crowd was gone. We were seated right away. Water was immediately delivered to our table, and then our server appeared to ask us if we wanted anything else to drink. We had just done a bit of wine tasting, so we skipped the cocktails this time, although the drink menu was intriguing. Next time, maybe... My husband and I ordered the cup of soup, which was a delicious potato and corn chowder. I also ordered the Pacific Salmon w/Balsamic Glaze, Herb Confit Marble Potatoes and Sautéed Seasonal Vegetables, which I split with my husband. I told him I was very hungry and wasn't sure I wanted to share, but when the plate came, there was plenty of food for the both of us. (We tend to eat lighter meals now.) The salmon was perfectly cooked, and the potatoes and sautéed broccoli were nice sides. Service was excellent, the ambiance is cozy and comfortable. It was a nice stop after a morning apples and wine.

When my wife and I are on the road the restaurants we choose are a key part of our stays. Placerville is one of the jump off points for the infamous Rubicon Trail and we picked in large part due to the great restaurants available to us. Our dinner before embarking on our adventure was at The Independent and we loved every minute of it. No cocktails or wine due to the early start the next day so our focus was purely on the food. We started with a shared salad, called the Summer Caprese. "Local Ray Yeung Heirloom Tomatoes, Fresh Mozzarella, Burrata Pesto, Garden Basil, Local Field Greens, Herb Vinaigrette, Maldon Sea Salt" and it was a great way to begin our meal. The tomatoes tasted like they must have been picked that day and delivered to the restaurant, as they were so fresh, juicy and sweet. The rest of salad was just as delicious and we were both sad to eat that last bite. However when the entrees arrived we returned to a state of bliss as we each devoured our choices. We both went with fish that night with my wife choosing pacific salmon which was grilled and served with a balsamic glaze and a side of herb confit marble potatoes and sautéed seasonal vegetables. So many restaurants overcook salmon, but this was done just right, warmed through but still somewhat translucent in the center with an incredible crust which delivered a crunch with every bite. The herbed potatoes were also very flavorful as were the vegetables. The balsamic glaze included capers cooked with lemons which just added a pop to every bite. I went with one of nights specials, ahi tuna served over a bed of orzo with broccolini and grilled polenta cheese . The tuna was raw in the middle with slightly seared edges and the the accompanying sides were equally as good. We sat outside which I would highly recommend. Very sweet patio setting with a fire in the fireplace and two two wall fountains. My only complaint was regarding the service. Our waiter, Jake was fantastic, really fun to talk to and he made you feel like you were the only customer in the place. But the bussing was annoying. We had barely put our forks on our plates after the last bite of salad and they were being whisked away. The same was true with our dinner plates and it made us feel a bit like we were being rushed out the door. Notwithstanding that fact we will be back the next time we are in this beautiful little town.

The Independent food was fabulous. I had the Calamari, Polenta, Seared Ahi, and Bread Pudding. Best overall dinner that I have had in a while. Our server, Trevor, was attentive and cordial - as well as his two other team members. The ambience was nice and sound level was moderate. Parking was readily available to the left of the restaurant. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

My daughter devoured her Flatbread and my husband really liked his Reuben Sandwich - I liked all of the toppings that came on my BOJ Burger, but the hamburger patty itself was not seasoned and it weirdly made the whole burger lack in flavor even though there was bacon, onion jam and gouda on it. Our friends also enjoyed their food as well! They offer a large beer menu and a fun cocktail list - I almost ordered one, but decided not to. I will have to next time! Overall, service was friendly and attentive - even when it started getting really busy. I was hesitate about visiting based off of the reviews, but we we all left full and satisifed. So if you like those Raiders of the Lost Ark vibes, then you would like sitting next to the mine for sure. It's roped off but you can hear the water dripping and it is naturally cool. The structure was originally built as a hotel in 1853 and has been well preserved. I ordered their Smith Flat House salad ($10) and the Jambalaya Risotto ($34) which consisted of Cajun-marinated prawns, lobster meat, Andouille sausage, grilled sweet corn with saffron chicken risotto. Definitely had a bit of a kick to it, the risotto was done well. My pet peeve is mushy risotto, it needs to have a slight bite to it which this one had thankfully. Love the fact that this place serves up local wines -- I couldn't recall the wine I had and they do not have their wine menu on their website. If you have the opportunity to visit, I'd recommend a glass of red from Starfield (winery up the road).

Yay! Our new favorite lunch place on Main Street!…read more We just stopped by last weekend, we've been wanting to try this place out but it just hadn't happened.... Last Monday we decided to have lunch there, one of our regular places is closed Mondays and this place was open so we checked it out...and we're SO SO glad we did! Atmosphere was nice and server was very friendly from the moment we walked in. First thing I noticed; $5 mimosas!! I asked if they did anything other than orange juice and yes, they had several other options so I had the cranberry version. Delicious! I went with their mac and cheese, my partner got the basic hamburger. Mac and Cheese -- definitely very bacon forward, much more than I prefer. That being said, I still liked it, it also had sour cream and green onion on top. Bacon lovers will LOOOVE this version, there is LOTS of it and every bite you can taste it. Normally I prefer my mac & cheese with no bacon or just a bit here and there, I prefer to taste more of the cheeses.....again, it still tasted good, its a good serving and I ate half and had enough to save for the next day at work. Creamy and well made, again I just prefer to taste more cheese than bacon. I wouldn't order this again but like I said, a bacon lover will LOVE this version. Now, my partner's burger was Incredible. We are PICKY with our burgers, and we both thought this one was fantastic. Big, and great ratio to the bun. He ordered it medium and asked for "a little char" and they made it perfectly. I took a bite and yeah, I'd order that for sure. The fries were great, too. Overall we were super happy with our lunch, I thought it was priced fairly as well. We will definitely be back!!

The pitfalls of the restaurant seem to be entirely the service. Most recently we went to Franny's on Mother's Day. We had reservations and walked in, on time. We were initially sat in a nice booth in the front of the restaurant. It was my wife and I plus our 2 kids, the table size seemed appropriate. After being sat, we sat without talking to a server for 10+ minutes, not even getting waters. Eventually, when someone did come, it was a waitress/hostess telling us that there had been a mix up, and we needed to move. We weren't excited on the idea, as we were happy where we were, but we moved to the back of the restaurant. This time we sat for 15 minutes without being acknowledged by any wait staff. At this point it is 9:25 and we've been seated for 25 minutes without even water. Finally a waitress comes, and takes our drink order, and our food order as we'd definitely had ample time to look over the menu. About 9:50 the food arrives. My wife and kids' food comes and is great. My food comes and looks off, and the waitress tells me that the kitchen accidentally made me a "veggie" scramble instead of the chorizo that I had ordered, but that she'd get me some bacon and all was well. I asked what was in the veggie scramble and was told it has mushrooms, which is a hard pass for me. She told me she could have what I had actually ordered made but it would "take a long time". I said O.K. - what else was I going to do? Finally it comes, and my wife is done eating, and the kids are close, so, I asked for it to be "boxed up". The waitress rolled her eyes and set to the task. I'm not a restaurant snob - but I really expected an apology or something to be "comp'd" due to the rough experience, but nope, full bill and no apology. Regrettably, despite Franny's being a local joint and having good food, we won't be back.

The sandwiches were a little underwhelming based on the reviews and the price point. I tried the char siu and meat lovers sandwiches which were both on nicely grilled Texas toast. The flavor of the char siu sandwich reminded me of cake noodle and beef broccoli because of the ramen noodles and the overall flavor of the sauce. I didn't get any of the bamboo shoots in the sandwich or maybe they were chopped really small? The char siu was decent, not super tender and not the typical char siu flavor but it wasn't bad. The meat lovers sandwich had a noticeable sweet flavor I'm assuming from the spaghetti sauce but it really lacked depth. It honestly reminded me of canned spaghetti and a sloppy joe. It also seemed like there was no ranch dressing even though it's part of the sandwiches name. I appreciate the creativity and whimsy they've put into their menu. I just don't think the execution and flavor profiles are where they should be.

My husband's steak was a beautiful cut of meat, cooked perfectly, but way over salted for my taste. The rolls were fresh out of the over and delish! The brussels sprouts yummy. The meals were served with what appeared to be frozen broccoli, which detracted a bit from the farm to fork vibe, but it was cooked well, so not reason to hate on it too much! We were super sad that we were too full to order dessert because they looked amazing!!
