I've eaten here a few times over the course of a few years and it has remained consistently good. On one of the occasions I've been here, we made a late reservation during one of the busiest weekends in Oakland: Pitt graduation. We were sat in the bar room which is intimate and beautifully decorated. I highly recommend requesting to sit in that room if you can. Everything we ordered was wonderfully prepared and delicious. The best part of the night was when we asked our server about their vinegar pie. None of us had ever heard of such a thing, to which the server promised we'd like it or he'd pay for it himself. Let me tell you, it's been a few years since and all of us are still talking about this pie. I know they offer other house made desserts but every time I keep going back to the vinegar pie. Butterjoint is not in downtown Pittsburgh but it is worth coming to the outskirts just try it. We were greeted by a very friendly host, who sat us outside with our dog. He also offered our dog a bowl of water, which I haven't seen at many other restaurants! The waiters were very friendly too and answered our questions. For food, we had the potato pierogis for appetizers. They were excellent and I recommend it. I liked how I asked the waiter to take off the onion off the pierogi and they were accommodating. The burgers were very good too. I had the fancy burger and it was filling. The bar menu is decent and I am sure you will be able to find a beverage on it. I had the Jamaican pulled goat sandwich with the side salad. It was pretty good (4/5) and is a unique item I haven't seen elsewhere. If you are looking forward to trying a Dutch Baby-this is 100% NOT the place for it. -A Dutch Baby rises up taller on the sides and curves up crispy. This version is similar to a crepe omelet. +We did LOVE the Crabcake Crumpet and the Brunch Burger. -We attended a large group with separate checks (I know that is annoying, it couldn't be avoided.) But it wasn't until the next day I noted a 20% Large Party tip added to my $73 check. I tipped $20 cash, so I'd say our server had a good bump to the day. All in all-definitely go to this place. My partner and I went here for brunch and we both really loved it! The ambience is really nice and we were lucky in that it wasn't too busy that day so we were really able to enjoy our time there. Our server was super friendly and on top of everything. My partner had the Crispy Chicken and Crumpets and I had the Brunch Sammie. We both really loved our meals and their crumpets are amazing! The pierogi are quite good! Vinegar pie is maybe the best pie I've ever had. Being a scratch kitchen, the homemade milk buns were a nice touch, but I would not say the burgers are much better than your standard gastropub fare. I'm a big believer in asking the staff at a restaurant what they love. Unless you run into the occasional vegan who doesn't eat anything they serve, you can usually get a few great recommendations. Our server here, Lydia, was no exception. She recommended several excellent items, including: 1. The "Mercy of the Bartender" cocktail option, which is a recommendation for taking the recommendation of the bartender, in essence. Meta. Also a good time, as I got a weird and wonderful cumin-tasting drink that I loved. 2. The Fancy Burger. Because we are clearly fancy people. And we enjoyed the hell out of this juicy burger stacked with gruyere, bacon, glass onion jam, lettuce, and house pickles. I can't say if it's the best burger in Pittsburgh (I haven't eaten enough here), but it's definitely the best burger I've had in Pittsburgh. 3. The Pickle Plate. I don't know how Lydia knew I loved fermented and pickled things, but she was right. I'll eat all the ginger-pickled carrots, beets, daikon, kimchi, and taqueria pickles you've got, and the miso egg is just a bonus. 4. The Raclette. While this was pretty good, I think raclette loses a little something when it sits; you want to eat it immediately after it's scraped off a wheel onto some other food. We also went off script and got the Sauerkraut Balls too, which are as awesome as you think they are. I'm a little mad at Lydia for not telling us about them, actually. Not really. Lydia, you're perfect, and the service was all-around excellent. I only wish we had room to add on the vinegar pie, as Lydia suggested. I like vinegar. I like pie. Next time. read more

I really like this place for a lot of reasons but also have my critiques... (+) : burgers and sandwiches are so delicious, raclette is yummy, pierogis are worthwhile, drinks are solid. (-) : vibes are just okay, kinda run down decoration and lighting is a bit dark. Desserts (chess pie) are just okay. Other dishes are fine but not super memorable. The shakshuka is worth the visit- so delicious with loads of peppers and onions in a piping hot cast iron dish. The eggs will set fast so cut into the yolks speedy quick and dip that fresh toasted crumpet into the runny yolk. Pure joy! Brunch burger was excellent as well. I wanted to give the good people at Butterjoint some praise and a huge "Thank You" for the meal that my wife and I enjoyed there on Saturday night (10/11/25). We were at the end of a very long day that included driving from PHL to PGH to visit a loved one in the hospital and were in need of some relaxed, comforting food and vibes. Butterjoint provided that on every level. The food was excellent. My wife and I split the Baba Ghanoush as a starter. It was really good with a perfect, delicious amount of smokey flavor. My wife got the salmon and I got the moulles frites and both were great. In addition to the good food, we enjoyed excellent drinks. My wife LOVED the "pickle-tini". I was guided to the Verdeca wine as a pairing with the moulles by our amazing server Alyssa, who described herself as a "wine geek". She also directed my wife to the Tempranillo, which was a big hit. For dessert, we enjoyed a delicious piece of Chocolate Truffle cake and my wife had an after dinner bourbon. We also enjoyed a nice chat with Alyssa about wines from the Finger Lakes and Arizona, which was a perfect way to complete the great vibes that we needed. I had 2 and i would have ordered a third if it was not so early. We started with the falafel and pickled shrimp. For main course I had the burger and my buddy the crispy chicken sandwich. I've been dreaming about Vinegar Pie since I first tried it at Pie for Breakfast four years ago. I was so excited to try it again at the sister restaurant Butterjoint! My family and I had a wonderful time at this restaurant for lunch--we were one of only three tables for lunch service, and so it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. Our waitress Sandy was an absolute delight! She had great recommendations and was very accommodating as well. The music at the restaurant was quite eclectic, ranging from metal to soothing harp music. Definitely strange! The food was top notch. Don't pass up the raclette, which comes perfectly melted and a little crispy on the bottom too. The fancy burger and pulled goat sandwich were both quite tasty--I thought the fries were a tad bland (maybe I got my hopes up too high since I usually love fries cooked in tallow). We ended the meal with the Vinegar Pie, and if you haven't tried it yet... you're missing out! It has a perfect flaky crust, a delicious caramelized top, and a perfectly gooey filling. Had my first experience with pierogies on a recent visit to Butterjoint! I met 2 family members who live in Pittsburgh for dinner here and had a great experience. We started with kielbasa pierogies which were delicious. Lots of drink options, and we had the range from beer to wine to cocktails. Everything was delicious! For entrees, I chose the Fancy Burger with fries. It was huge, and I was really only able to eat about half. Another person had their soup of the day, along with a kale salad topped with grilled chicken. The third member of our party had the chicken sandwich. Everyone was happy with their meal. I'd rate Butterjoint four and a half stars. I've been meaning to come here for over a decade the stars finally aligned for me and my wife last night. After a late flight and a bit of a wait for the 28x, we managed to check in at the Butterjoint before their kitchen closed at 10. Very good selection of beers with a focus on local and craft beers. I had the Forest and Main House Lager and then the Troegs Nugget Nectar. For food, we started with the kale ceasar salad. This isn't your typical healthy kale salad. Generous dressing with large anchovies and plenty of olives. A salty food lovers delight. For the main course, I had the Butterjoint burger and my wife had the Jamaican goat sandwich. The burger was cooked to medium. It's a thinner patty, but still juicy and delicious. Topped with house sauce, cheese, lettuce, and pickles in between a perfect brioche bun. Both sandwiches were good but I found the ingredients falling out consistently. The sandwiches came with a heaping of fries. Possibly the biggest serving of fries in Oakland since the O closed. For dessert, we shared the vinegar pie and I had a small pour of Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel. Nice variety of whiskey, yet the menu was approachable. I liked the pie and appreciated them putting it on the menu as I hadn't heard of it before. Service was friendly, helpful, and attentive. Our waiter helped make the experience wonderful. This place was a great find on my work trip. I walked a mile to get here and it was worth it. The atmosphere is very nice and I chose to sit at the bar. The service was quick and friendly. I ordered more than I could eat just to try a few things. The pierogies are fantastic. I tried the fancy burger and it was great. They serve it with a huge pile of fries which were equally good. Everything tasted fresh. They have a full bar and specialized cocktails. I like that they also serve nonalcoholic wines, beers and cocktails. The only thing I would ask is either leaving a bottle of ketchup/mayo or using bigger (non paper) cups. Just a minor thing. I would love to return. read more

And pita with falafel..And tahini sauce in one of those accordion style paper cups used for ketchup in cafeterias? make it a little more generour and something nice - ceramic bowl, or something. My only complaint about the food we did have was the vanilla ice cream desert - the chance for a kitchen to shine on something very basic done perfectly, was icy, watery and not much vanilla flavor.
