It is bright, clean and invariably busy. That tells me a lot. Food? Oh yes, it is a home run. Biscuits and gravy did not disappoint. Light, fluffy biscuits held up to the creamy gravy, filled with sausage goodness. The service was quick but there was a fly who kept buzzing our heads (which was annoying, and odd since it was November). My husband's hash, eggs, and home fries were good but my buttermilk blueberry pancakes were not what I was expecting. There were very few blueberries and they lacked moisture or flavor. I've had much better Maine blueberry pancakes. So good we decided to visit twice in one weekend! We were in Camden for a wedding and were looking for somewhere to get a tasty breakfast and Buttermilk definitely delivered. The restaurant is small, but cute. There are a few tables out back that offer a great view of the harbor. The first day, I opted for the Market Scramble, while the second I got the Country Omelette with bacon. Both were extremely tasty and were good size portions with a large side of potatoes and your choice of bread. I tried their homemade blueberry basil jam - not exactly my taste, but it is nice that it is made in-house. Waitstaff was friendly and attentive, regularly refilling our coffees. The biscuit donuts and the cinnamon roll off the specials menu were both definitely worth it! read more

Pretty heavenly biscuit. The biscuit was buttery and flaky. I'm from Kentucky and know good grits-- these pimento cheese grits were for real. The restaurant has only been open for a short while and they've added some useful upgrades. This is a must stop if you're passing through Camden. That blueberry lavender latte was the best drink I have ever had. I've never had anything made from blueberry milk... but OMG it was to die for. I would drive from KY just for this latte. Took a few days off from my own busy restaurant to take a trip up to the Camden area today. I have been looking forward to tying Buttermilk Kitchen since I saw it featured on #Mainelife a bit ago! This place did not disappoint! We started with the biscuit donuts with a maple drizzle... YUM!!! I ordered the chicken biscuit. Fried chicken breast, red pepper jelly and buttermilk drop biscuit! It comes with house pickles... a nice touch. I added the cheesy pimento grits and 2 perfectly cooked over easy eggs (please don't judge... I wanted to try everything). Needless to say I had to take home a doggy bag! This was by far the best meal I have had out in years!! The host was excellent! The waitstaff was excellent!! The coffee was excellent. And the food? Yum! Yum! Yum! Best breakfast this morning. Sat at the bar and enjoyed a wonderful meal to start our day. Service was excellent. Fresh brewed coffee and iced tea. Pancake was fluffy and had wild Maine blueberries. Fried chicken was moist and crunchy. Grits were amazing, and my expectations were high as Texas is my home. Went curling in Belfast, and ended up eating 3 times at Buttermilk Kitchen! Great food, the staff is happy and attentive (the sign of a great place), and they have corned beef hash! Had the hash and eggs, the blueberry (what else in Maine?) pancakes, and the buttermilk donut holes, with some sort of ridiculous glaze. All served with a smile. Go! read more

What a pleasure to get to have breakfast here after following (on Instagram) the owner's journey to purchase, renovate and reimagine a longtime local favorite restaurant. She embraced the best of the old with a fresh new menu to create something very special. The place looks really beautiful -- authentically Maine, with eye catching artwork. And the food was scrumptious!!! The chicken biscuit had a kick of flavor from the pepper jelly that was perfection. This usually heavy entree somehow seemed light!!! And the chicken and grits had an unusual combo of spicy and sweet that was so delicious!! What a great addition to Camden, complete with a gorgeous view of the harbor on the back patio! We had the basic breakfast with homemade biscuits, homemade jam, homemade grits.. then the sausage patties were slender, deeply browned from a local supplier. The service was exceptional. Expectations were high as the waitress described a chef who knew their way around the kitchen, but no. The biscuits and gravy were probably the worst I have ever had. For starters the biscuits are drop-biscuits, not country biscuits, so do not lend themselves too much other than a side. Then there was the gravy. Too sweet, as if some kind of meat jam that had not set up yet. My wife's meal was little better with the omelette. The ingredients were not cooked together prior to putting them in the egg. So, their flavors could never develop. And pepper jelly should always have a complimentary fruit as the base, raspberry, peach, etc. not just pepper. Lastly, and this is not unique to the Buttermilk, value is just not there. $70 for two flat biscuits, four eggs, six slices of bacon. Five little potatoes, coffee and juice just seems like highway robbery. But then the juice was $6. So, this is the world we now live in... not sure how the locals can partake of these places. Guessing that is why there are so many McDonald's and Dunkin' Donuts on the outskirts of town. read more

The new dinning room is very nice and more relaxed. The food was basic. Drop biscuits are okay, the gravy was thick and mediocre. I would like it thinner and brighter flavor. I wish they could have been more creative and honor our local culinary heritage with their menu. The south is fine but Maine has its own flavor and should inspire the dishes in our iconic neighborhood of Camden with the addition of southern flair would be lovely. I had some fairly bland French toast, and gluey grits, the pimento cheese gives the grits a vomit like flavor. Not a fan of that at all. It's not very refined for the price. Little disappointed. We were looking for a quick lunch, something different from the seafood we have been eating daily for 2 weeks. They serve mostly breakfast foods, with a few sandwiches. For those who don't know, it's a southern themed restaurant with a New England twist. The owner is from Georgia. I'm a southern boy originally from Alabama. I had low expectations. And boy, was I shocked. This is biscuits and gravy topped with eggs and a side of pimento cheese grits. The meal was absolutely amazing. The biscuits were just right. The gravy was just right. The cheesy grits were out of this world, better than what my mama made. All of the flavor profiles were on point. The only complaint I had was I thought their coffee was weak. But the food itself is absolutely killer. The service was also very good. Our waitress was sweet and attentive even though they were busy. Everyone should give this place a try. I've had good maine food and i've had good southern food and this is neither. Small place, not comfortable to wait and not easy to get a table when its busy, but that's not their fault. Weird flavors in the food, like they used dirty cooking oil, eggs and hash were greasy, chicken biscuit was dense and dry. Service was fast and friendly to be fair. Unfortunately this replaced a beloved old fashioned local favorite that was for normal people and turned it into a kind of expensive "foodie" kind of place for tourists, things change nothing lasts forever but I did not enjoy the food left feeling gross. read more
