The chicken was tattooed with grill marks sending subtle puffs of smoke within each crunch of the char. Basted in a sweet teriyaki, they don't overdue it. Let the sauce complement the meat, not drown it. The thin glaze is caramelized on the chicken skin leaving it slightly sticky, and all the more flavorful. The mac salad is superb. The best way to describe the flavor is soft. The creamy sauce glueing the mac to the celery and carrots just floats without doing too much. A bit of cream, a bit of richness, but still let the mac star the show. Some mac salads just taste like dollops of mayo, not at buzz's; superb! Staff is super friendly. Everyone was nice, collaborative, and even on a slow sunday afternoon, keeping busy helping one another out--always a pleasant sight at a small little shop. Oh, and it has a killer patio! We were on our annual road trip we do with a bunch of our friends and their families. We had arrived to our AirBNB too late to hit up barbecue spots, then something unbelievable showed up in our search results. A Hawaiian spot just around the corner? A Hawaiian spot not serving fake mainland poke, but plate lunch type stuff. And serving actual island-style poke??? It sounded too good to be true. We put in a big order, then walked over to pick it up. It took some time, but I understand it was a big order near the end of the day so my friend and I were happy to wait. My wife and I had to get the poke with rice and Mac salad, and it turned out really good! Maybe not as good as the poke from Hawaii (obviously) or Seattle, but still something I would order again if I was in the area. However, my friend's items were not as good. I'm reviewing from my experience, but the beef items they got were overcooked, and the musubi had a terrible rice to meat ratio. Also they had tocino musubi on the menu which got us excited, but it turned out to be just the tocino flavored Spam and not actual tocino. I think they also forgot an item, but it was too much hassle for us to try to hash it out since it was already late. I always have a hard time rating places that serve local-Hawaiian food because I was privileged enough to live on O'ahu, Maui, and the Big Island and I know EXPECTING true to taste in the Midwest is asking a lot .... BUT entering, there was like, no aloha spirit, the vibes were so off, the music selected wasn't even, at least modern Island reggae, and the lights were really dim. That is outside of the HUGE wait times of DoorDash orders coming through and stalling the people waiting in line to order. The staff were working HARD to get through the line, but they were just overworked. We got an order of garlic shrimp that came with rice, mac salad, and a pineapple slice for some reason. We also ordered the Poke Bomb Flight which is fried tofu skins filled with rice and topped with poke. The Poke Bomb Flight, or inari, was pretty good! I liked the flavor of the poke and it was a great one bite situation. The garlic shrimp however was small - like not even plate lunch servings. It was 5 pieces of shrimp, two small scoops of rice, and mayo heavy mac salad. I crave Hawaiian food often especially after having lived and worked in Honolulu for almost a year. So it's nice to have a good Hawaiian restaurant here in St. Louis besides Hawaiian Brothers, which is also very good but unlike that other place Buzz's has more authentic Hawaiian dishes such as the Loco Moco that I ordered, which is one of my favorite plate lunches in the Hawaiian islands. The Loco Moco has a thick burger on a bed of rice and brown gravy with an egg on top. For an appetizer I also ordered the spam musubi, which is very much like it is in Hawaii with grilled teriyaki spam and rice rolled in a seaweed wrapper that is very delicious. I joined friends next door for happy hour. Buzz's offers table service via QR code to the bar. The bar also carries a small cocktail menu as a nod to Hawaii. I would like to preface this review by saying that I lived in Hawaii for five years. I have always been a plate lunch enthusiast. I was happy to see that Buzz's menu offers everything you could want to make a delicious meal reminiscent of the islands. Traditionally, plate lunch includes two scoops of rice, a scoop of mac salad, and a protein. Sticky sweet teriyaki sauce on chicken or steak, or crispy chicken katsu, or maybe Kalua pork are all good options. I went with the kalbi ribs and garlic shrimp. The kalbi was done well. The garlic shrimp missed the mark for me. In fairness, my frame of reference is Giovanni's shrimp truck on the North Shore of Hawaii. This shrimp was dry and was missing the garlic butter sauce. We also tried the lumpia, manapua, kalua sandwich, and an order of loaded fries. This is just a small portion of their amazing menu. I'm confident there is something for everyone. My favorite part of the meal were the signature Dole Whip. I was momentarily transported back to the Dole pineapple plantation! If you're more adventurous the lilikoi are absolutely amazing!! I'd give the food a 4/5. I got a katsu chicken hi-plate and the portion was good for what I paid. The slice of pineapple was also a nice surprise I wasn't expecting and was great for taking a bite in between the entree to reset my palate. I took a point off because the katsu was a little burnt and wouldve been perfect if it was done for a minute or so less. I like that they provide the house sauces on the side counter so you can add more katsu sauce if the dish is tasting a bit dry. There's seating both inside and outside so it makes for a scenic dinner if weather permits. Overall, I think I have to come back to give the katsu another chance or try something else! read more

I spent 5 1/2 years stationed on Oahu, Hawaii in the Navy from 1990 to 1995. I have longed for Hawaiian food ever since I left the island and when I found Buzz's Hawaiian Cafe here in St. Louis, MO the other day I was so excited! This is true Hawaiian food served up with love by Hawaiians! I love everything about Buzz's, and I'm so glad it's in STL and right next to my favorite bar. Buzz's has counter service and their own dining space, plus they're connected inside to the Tick Tock Tavern--you can order your food, take your little order number sign next door, and have your delectable dishes brought right to you! I like Buzz's Poke Bowl alongside a TTT Gin Rickey, but Buzz's serves plenty of non-alcoholic drinks, including tropical juices and such, if that's more your thing. The menu's rather long, but feel free to ask questions; I do that often & the staff is always gracious and patient. There's a noodle soup, teriyaki chicken, Spam musubi, and so much more I could recommend... and don't be put off by "macaroni salad" on the menu. This isn't the same stuff your auntie may have made for the church picnic, swimming in Miracle Whip... it's somehow well-dressed but still crisp and not too heavy. Worst meal of 2026 by a very large margin. I don't usually get mad for bad food, but I am mad, which tells you how bad it was. I had worked in Hawaii for a little while and was so excited to try out this place, thinking it would bring back some fine memories. How wrong. The fried wontons were overcooked. Burnt. My daughter spit it out. It was so bad she cried. The rice was undercooked. As in TOTALLY undercooked, so it was hard in the inside and watery outside. The mac was meh. The smoked pork was not fresh at all. I don't know how long it had sat but a large chunk of it was dry like jerky. The teriyaki steak was tough like leather. The pineapple fried rice was bland like hell, and it was just rice and some sauce. My 5 year old son sad it tasted terrible. We went to McDonalds after this torture because we could only take a few bites and we're still hungry. Not sure where all those positive reviews came from. First timers at Buzz's and I was pleasantly surprised. I tried Hawaiian bros once and did not enjoy the food, therefore I thought I would have the same experience here. I was wrong! The food is so flavorful and tastes homemade. Although not pictured the Kalua Pig was also very flavorful (could've use more sauce but they have a sauce area in the restaurant so not a problem at all). The sandwiches are more slider like, so do not expect a huge meaty sandwich but expect good flavor. For a $16 mixed plate, you get your moneys worth. The food was excellent (not a lot of veggies overall, but there are vegetarian options). The service in both establishments was friendly and casual (as one would expect in the Midwest!). Stopped in last Saturday afternoon, and left shocked they weren't packed to the rafters. I've eaten a lot of Hawaiian food around the country, and Buzz's is among the very best! We enjoyed the pork steamed buns immensely, especially with the wide array of sauces and seasonings...I thought the spicy pepper water (apologies for not recalling its proper title, but you'll know what I mean when you see it) was the best pairing for the fluffy, doughy goodness in those buns. I am a musubi connoisseur--these might have been my all time favorites; I got mine with egg and gochujang. Do that. Thank me later. My lady had the salmon poke...we've struggled to find good poke in the Midwest, but Buzz came through in spades! My loco moco was near perfect...I felt the gravy needed a teensy bit more salt, but that was easily adjusted. It's decorated with a Hawaiian theme, which was fun. As for the food, they had all my Hawaiian favorites. You place your order at the counter then when it's ready they bring it to you. I had the Kalua pork plate, which came with rice and macaroni salad. I really enjoyed the food. They also had some juices and things from Hawaii, which I also enjoyed. My favorite is the guava nectar, but anything with guava or lilikoi (passion fruit) is good. They also have a variety of sauces to put on your food. I went to Buzz's with a friend for "Hawaii Day" on August 8th (808 is the area code). They were serving up $1 Spam Musubi (usually $3) with a 10 limit. We each got ten for packing away for later and also ordered lumpia ($3), dumplings ($3), juices, and ube cookies ($3) to snack on while we waited. Soooo glad we came early because we ordered at 4:50 and only got the Spam Musubi at 6:05! Totally understandable with the massive lines of orders and it seemed like everyone ordered the limit of 10. They are large portions of spam Musubi and more than worth the regular $3. The quality of the food is so good and we could not believe the prices. Gosh the food here is SOOO GOOOD!! Everything I ate was delicious!! For starters lumpia and shumai. My main meal was the teri fries and teriyaki steak sandwich. Highly recommend getting one of the AlohaMaid juices for the full experience. (Pass-O-Guava nectar is my favorite) The lumpia was crispy and flavorful, using the sweet chili sauce. I really enjoyed my experience at Buzz's Hawaiian Grill! They have friendly staff and great service along indoor and cozy outdoor seating. You can order your food at Buzz's and have your food delivered at the Tick Tock tavern next door while you enjoy a beverage. I highly recommend the spam Musubi along with the Surf Plate because you can try three different proteins in one entree. We tried the Katsu Tofu, Chicken Yakitori, and Teriyaki Steak on our Surf Plate. The Chicken Yakitori was delicious and flavorful. There's a "sauce bar" inside where you can select additional sauces to enhance your meal. Today I had the Lumpia Spring Rolls (veg) & the Katsu Chicken Plate. Both were simply amazing. The taste and value for the meal were both perfect. This was my first time visiting this restaurant. I'm ALWAYS observing how the staff handle my food whenever eating out. The staff seemed very mindful of cleanliness which made me feel good about my visit. The young lady at the register suggested the Katsu Chicken Plate and she was absolutely right. My Spring Rolls were a good start - really good and the suggested Katsu Chicken Plate was a very good choice. The MAC salad...Wow - so awesome (I just wish I had placed an extra order as a separate side). The rice was seasoned with good flavor. The chicken was crispy on the outside but juicy on the inside with great flavor. The pineapple wedge topped the meal off. This will now be high on my list of eateries for future visits to St L. Randomly search Yelp and found this place to eat today. My boyfriend and I went here around noon. There are patio seatings in front of the place and in the back. There are also some seats available inside, plenty of seats to pick from. We brought our dog with us so we picked the patio seats in front of the restaurant. Our dog, Chloe even got a dog treat from someone I assume is the restaurant manager/owner. It was very tasty since Chloe ate the treat all in two bites. OH MY GOD. Full disclosure: my grandparents live in Hawaii and I've been eating Hawaiian food my whole life. It's in my top two types of food. The mesh of multiple cultures into one is so dreamy. It was the one type of food that I longed for when I moved to STL so I was SO HAPPY to see a spot open up, and so close to my house! Now, the food. My complaint is I WANTED TO TRY IT ALL. Another reason I'll be back! We ended up with the dumplings and the lumpia - both so good but if I had to pick, the crispy lumpia was to die for. I got the teriyaki steak for dinner and the preparation of the steak is JUST like Hawaii, they nailed it. The mac salad was also spot on. I was literally drooling the whole meal. My fiancé got a poke bowl, Hawaiian style, and he loved it. Said it was super flavorful. We stopped by Buzz's on the way to work one evening to enjoy a sit down dinner. When we arrived there was no line and we had our choice of seating in the dining room.
