A cherished neighborhood eatery that makes the trip worthwhile even if it's not your own neighborhood. Mediterranean and American food (whatever "American food" means anymore) fills the blue and creme colored handpainted menu board that looms over the cooks' station boasting favorites such as Gyros, Souvlaki, Shwarma, Burgers, Falafel and array of salads and side orders. The spit of gyros meat hypnotically takes center stage in the 80sq foot kitchen palace next to the dais that supports a meat slicer and the deep fryer. The place smells of fried food, grilled meats and onions -- intoxicatingly comforting at times. The only true "home made" food that their menu proclaims may be the salads or soups. There is no home made pita or potato chips, but my meals have always carried loads of flavor and generous portions. The service is quick and the staff are genuine. A fellow diner raved about the burger when I was last there. I love the chunky chicken Greek salad. Delicious! Thanks Yelp for advising on this place. Swung by here before taking an out of towner to the zoo. Their air conditioning was out, which didn't bother us. You order at the counter and pay after you eat (if you want). The place is a big dingy, nothing glamorous, but, the food is delicious the staff is friendly and sincere, and it's in a good location for pre-zoo eats that are cheap. I had the chicken shawarma which had tender fresh chicken and super awesome tahini sauce (a bit too much but, that's okay). My buddy had the Byblos special with gyros meat, rice, and amazing hummus. The gyros meat was some of the best I've ever had, totally delicious and I was stealing off my friends plate for the duration of lunch. Great food, great prices! read more

Delicious, authentic, house-made Greek-Lebanese food with friendly and attentive service. I attended an Anniversary dinner here with about 10 guests and the host and chef were so accommodating. First, they stayed open late to give us private use of the patio in front of the restaurant. Second, they let us decorate the place the way the bride and groom wanted to - and bring booze. Third, the food was plentiful and delicious. We started with a huge Greek salad with delicious fresh feta cheese and olives. We also had dolmades (grape leaves) that immediately transported me to a vacation in Greece 20 years ago. This was followed by a giant platter of sizzling falafel that was brown and crunchy on the outside and green and moist but firm on the inside the way a good falafel should be. The entire platter disappeared immediately into our bellies. We requested another platter. The falafels disappeared immediately again. Life-changing baba ghanoush (no exaggeration) was served which tasted like it had been prepared in a smokehouse! Also delicious house-made hummus and tzatziki served with cucumber and pita slices. The main course was chicken skewers and lamb and beef kofta with braised cauliflower and seasoned rice. All perfect. Dessert was baklava that was so sweet, flaky and delicious I almost wish I didn't know about this place! Fortunately it was cut into pieces which were about the size of two fingers and so I was able to limit myself to just one and walk away without gaining 10lbs! They keep it real here. Stopped by to stuff our faces after a day at the Zoo. It was late afternoon and we saw this place come up on Yelp. The two guys inside were very nice to us. There was a daily special that they offered at a really good price. There are a few seats inside and a patio area outside. The food we got was fresh and tasty. Service was pretty quick too. Having seen the great reviews online, I was really looking forward to trying out Byblos, and unfortunately I was very dissapointed. First of all, prices seem to have increased 20-25%. While this is understandable (although I would say they are now priced higher than similar, higher quality restaurants), these prices are only reflected in the restaurant (Grubhub, Uber Eats and online menu still have other prices), which is quite misleading. The food itself was mediocre, at best. Gyro was incredibly underwhelming (chewy, full of fat). Furthermore, for those concerned about Covid related precautions, the individual preparing all the food was wearing a mask without covering their nose. I had really looked forward to trying Byblos, and unfortunately found myself dissapointed on multiple fronts. read more

Pony tail guy) seemed a little put off and wasn't too stoked to see anyone, though he told me to have a nice day when I left. Pretty short with customers though. Rest of the staff was nice. Tried to order the byblos special, but they were out of kibbeh at noon already so no dice. Decided to just get the shawarma and a side order of falafel. Falafel is $0.85 a piece for about a half dollar sized piece, which seemed a little expensive. The falafel itself was dry and not especially flavorful either. Would not repeat. Shawarma was a little undersized compared to offerings elsewhere, but not bad for the price. The wrap was dry, the chicken was ridiculously dry and generally underseasoned, and the fillings were lacking. Would've preferred to just make it at home myself. I ordered two shawarma and a side order of falafel and only got one small container of hummus too, which seemed stingy. I work in the area and go to Byblos at least once a week. I always get the Greek salad with chicken. The most amazing salad! They load the salad with perfectly seasoned and cooked chicken. My co workers and I joke that we could actually drink their homemade house dressing (kidding)(but really). The guys there are always nice and remember my order every time too. First impression of this place was that it was kind of run down. My wife and I both had the chicken swarma which turned out to be some hunks of overcooked chicken brest in a pita with a LOT of sauce. The taste was okay but it quickly fell apart because of the sauce. I asked for two cups of water and they had to rinse out a coffee cup and a glass for it. Apparently no paper or plastic cups. This place is a gem in Cleveland Park. Their food is quick, cheap and damn good. I had the Falafel platter for dinner and it was fantastic. My boyfriend frequents this place and always gets the chicken platter. Both of the platters were about $23 together and with drinks included. The owner is also super nice! Tried this for the first time, got a gyro with fries. People were pleasant and nice, service was quick and efficient. The food, underwhelming. The gyro is not even a gyro, it fell apart immediately and couldn't even be picked up or held as a gyro should be. The pita was super thin and the meat while well seasoned was the only stand out. I don't think the onions made it into the wrap, but hey. The fries had not a pinch of salt, whatsoever. Unfortunately, the food wasn't as good as it was the last time...I got the gyro again but this time it was so greasy and the pita was covered in grease so I tried to wipe it off, there also wasn't as much meat in it as there was last time and was not filling. I also tasted tiny hard things in my gyro sandwich which was weird....kind of looked like hardened rice My boyfriend got the Byblos special again and it tasted just about the same, but his gyro meat was also a lot greasier and the hummus did not taste as fresh. Had an absolutely fantastic lunch here - 3 key points: 1. This was actually the third place we tried to eat - Tackle Box does not do lunch and theRed Hook place only had pre-made sandwiches. 2. I've eaten a lot of wraps but this restaurant holds a special place in my dark heart. The place is not fancy or eye-catching in anyway. It's as common as the next establishment. But your appetite isn't sated by the decor, hell no! It's the food that is paramount. What separates this place from other places (besides the taste) is the Chicken Shawarma on their menu. Here's a fun activity to do, kiddies: Go to your local gyro shop and take a good look at the menu. Chances are they won't have this dish. That's very good odds. These are the sort of odds you would gamble away your child's college money for. I love their Chicken Shawarma because the meat is marinated in some weird garlic mixture. Long after the meal, there's this lingering aftertaste you can only get rid off with mints or gurgling with acid. Besides gyros and such, they also prepare burgers and fries. Nice little neighborhood joint. I wanted to like the food more than I did, especially since Byblos seems one of a few neighborhood places that are highly esteemed by local patrons. I had the gyro, which had both beef and lamb. The beef turned out to be in a patty-like form, and the lamb was a bit sparse. The gyro got a bit soggy, but that may have been because I waited for my friends' orders to come out before digging in. Taste-wise, the gyro was fine, but with so many awesome middle eastern options around, I probably wouldn't go out of my way for a gyro. I am interested, however, in trying out the other options that seem more popular (chicken shwarma or byblos special, perhaps?), as well as a piece of baklava that I've found myself craving lately. The biggest saving grace of Byblos, IMO, is the reasonable prices and friendly service. We sat around for hours until closing time, and they were very accommodating! read more

Byblos is one of the best casual Lebanese restaurants I've ever been to. I live in the neighborhood, so I've had the chance to experience it in pretty much every condition - swarmed busy, dead empty, snowpocalypse, even once at 8:30 in the morning well before opening when I was starving. Chef/Owner Marco obviously cares a lot about his restaurant and his customers; he knows all the locals either by name or by face. He recognizes me through the window every time (though he never remembered my name). When I come in, he instantly remembers how I like my shawarma, what I want on my hot dogs, etc. On 90% of days, I can't knock the service. The other 10% of the time, it's a bit of a drag. Marco doesn't always hear everything you say, and you're going to end up repeating the toppings at least twice. Just get used to it, it's a small price to pay for the food. The gyro meat is juicy and rich, just the right amount of fat, and finished off on the grill to integrate any veggie toppings you put on it. Marco makes his own garlic spread fresh daily, and applies it liberally -- yum (but maybe not date food). The pitas are thin and stuffed with a huge amount of food, not the thick American-style pitas you find at junky gyro places. It lets you really focus on the meat. American classics like steak and cheese or hot dogs are also pretty good here. Nothing stands out, except maybe the hotdog special - the toasted bun and cheap price give it a bit of a boost compared to anything else in the area. The kafta is well spiced, the chicken shawarma is incredibly juicy (might not want to eat it over your lap). The falafel is SUPER crispy on the outside, and very light and fluffy on the inside - just divine. I've heard at least a dozen people say the Greek Chicken is the best they've ever had, though I've never ordered it. The simple olive oil/lemon/herbs/garlic presentation is very appealing though for my next dinner. I wouldn't recommend it for a date place - garlic doesn't go well with that, and honestly the place is drab. Decor is NOT this location's strong spot. But if you're looking for a good dinner after a matinee at the Uptown, or just want some good lebanese food without the hassle of a more upscale place like Lebanese Taverna, I coudn't recommend it more. read more

Got the Byblos Special with gyro meat. For 9-some bucks, it was a ton of food, and the gyro is up there with the best I've ever had. The hummus was great, as well. Friendly staff, too. edit: Received a request for more information... there's not a lot to say about the gyro itself, because a gyro's a gyro, but the meat itself was tender, and then it got deliciously crispy after it was thrown on the grill. It came with a perfectly sauteed 1/4th of an onion, hummus, some tzatsiki that was honestly a little low on cucumber flavor, and a side of pita. Girlfriend got the chicken schwarma wrap, which I thought was great from the one bite I had. She thought it had too much hummus in it. Byblos is one of the places I stop by after work when I'm too lazy to make anything myself. Pitas are a great way to end any work day. They also have awesome falafel and dolmas here. Um, could this menu be any longer? They have just about everything you'd expect or want from a Greek/Lebanese/whatever restaurant. If you're like me, and often eat the same things over and over again, this food will be a nice change of pace. They also put a boatload of veggies on the sandwiches here, so they definitely know what's up. I don't like lamb, it makes me feel weak in the knees, but other lamb-eating people in my life have enjoyed the gyro here. I don't understand the reviews for this place. It's expensive, it's just ok, and after I ate here, I seriously wanted to find a city health inspector. I mean really. If you ever check out a noir detective novel from the library down the street, this place will give you a good sense of what to expect when the author writes, "patina of grime".
