I enjoyed the process of selecting and designing a cake, that I decided I wanted to do the same for myself. I went on Instagram and searched for custom cake designers in my area in Queens, and was in between 3 different bakers. Noa Custom Cakes was very responsive, very informative, and very transparent in the way she communicated with me about my potential cake design. Her cakes are a little pricey, but you're getting a guarantee of communication and transparency, as well as the opportunity to work with such a sweet lady. This waw the reason why I booked my 30th birthday cake with her. She accepts Zelle and Venmo, and pick up in Maspeth, Queens only. I was very straightforward in my design, as well as including inspiration pics for her to review. Noa then also shared pictures of her work, as well as telling me what she can do to set my expectations realistically! We agreed on: pink to white ombre buttercream, edible gold leaf flakes, Handpainted faultline in gold, ube cake with ube ganache, with a rose gold glitter customizable topper. Noa will check on you to make sure you're ready to pick up your cake. When we thought we were at her house to do a no contact pick up, the GPS told us to walk through houses to her address. Confused, I texted her to tell her exactly where we were, and she redirected me quickly. When I got to her place, she met me outside and put the cake on a chair where we did a social distancing pick up. We had to be super careful bringing the cake back home as the box was so tall! We also had a half hour bumpy ride back home with our pup in the back, so it was triple the obstacles to get home. Luckily we made it back OK, and played tetris to fit the cakes in our refrigerator. Came cake time, Noa told me to take it out 15 min before cutting. When we cut into it, we were very impressed by the ube ganache and cake flavors. The gold faultline was a citrus flavor, and the rest of the buttercream was American. I told Noa that personally, the buttercream was too sweet to us, but she apologized for it. She told me that all cakes are defaulted with American buttercream unless we specify what type we wanted. Noa is very sweet in explaining why the flavor was what it was, and we understood. Ask her questions because she's very sweet and patient in answering them all.

All of these vendors including Lael are are on the pricey side, $10 to $14+ a slice. Vegan Treats might start a little bit lower but their delivery fee to Brooklyn is about $300, so they could potentially price out as higher than the others. But after taking a look at the Lael Cakes website, I just fell in love with the cake designs. These are the most beautiful and wedding cakes I have ever seen. I actually recognized some of the cakes from Martha Stewart Weddings magazine. Emily of Lael Cakes was named one of the top 100 cake designers in the country by Martha Stewart Weddings Magazine, and she is probably the only one that specializes in vegan, gluten free, natural and organic wedding cakes. For our tasting, my fiance and I tried 4 flavors of cake and 4 flavors of icing. We thought the pumpkin and chocolate favors were delicious and far better than the vanilla and red velvet flavors. We decided on getting a two tiered cake. The bottom layer will be pumpkin with chocolate icing and the top layer will be chocolate with strawberry basil icing. Originally, as far as the exterior of the cake, we were going to go with a plain white cake, but later decided to order one with designs. I emailed Emily some ideas and she quickly got back to me with sketches of designs. I am certain the cake will come out beautifully. Firstly, it was very pricey, I know because it was my hubby and I who paid the bill as a gift for the soon to be mommy. To be honest I wouldn't have been upset about the price had the experience not turned out to be unprofessional and chaotic. Starting from the top of the list, my Sister in Law did order a detailed and aesthetically pleasing 2 tier cake. The flavor was supposed to be Tres Leches. It might as well have been zero leches because it was so dry and very disappointing. This was not the worst though. Besides the high price tag and poor quality of taste, the bakery uses HAZARDOUS MATERIALS to achieve the look of their cakes. What do I mean? Well raise your hand if you think putting STYROFOAM dipped in chocolate on an EDIBLE CAKE is smart and safe. I can understand using Styrofoam as a display example but it says a lot about a business when they are limited in their ability to design and create a cake using material that should NEVER be used. AND if they were going to use such, make sure the customer knows not to eat and remove before serving. Well long story made short- it was not told to us that there was an inedible objects on/in the cake other than the stems inside which were noted to be removed on the back of the receipt. So the cake was served to guest and the Styrofoam coated in chocolate to appear like cake pops was consumed by a kid! Who got ill, throwing up afterwards but luckily with a quick trip to urgent care was properly treated and nothing severe came about in the aftermath. WELL I was fuming about this and called the bakery to speak with the manager after that weekend. The manager Julissa made it very difficult to work through a solution. She asked me to come in person to speak about it mind you the bakery is 1 hour away from me. I told her that was out the question because I am not taking off to come into person to have a conversation that can be handled by phone. What would seeing me in person have done to resolve the matter? She then asked me to send an email so she had the complaint in writing which I did. It took almost a week for her to get back to me after I reached out to follow up only for her to notify me that they weren't responsible for the situation and the best they can do is offer me $100 store credit. Can you believe that? No, then how about this. When I told her that was not acceptable and I felt like she can reimburse me half of the order at least, they responded by sending me a screenshot of how Styrofoam is not toxic. Worst part, their screenshot was off a website from MISSOURI. It was obvious that they had to second guess the material they used only once they were faced with a very dangerous scenario that came about with the consumption of their food. Instead of taking accountability and displaying their sincere apologies by offering at least what was requested, they felt sending me their ridiculous google research was sufficient to validate how they weren't wrong. Moral of the story- not everything you see is as glamorous as it looks. Be careful if placing an order with this establishment if you care about your loved ones and/or looking to do business with a professional establishment. You won't get that here.
