Another tiny cupcake place on a quiet side street in the East Village (or maybe Alphabet City is more accurate). Contrary to the Yelp note that says it is temporarily closed, it actually is open as of today. The focus here is on those beautiful, giant, custom cakes, but they also make stuff for walk-ins, like cupcakes and other sweets, as well as a few savory options (though they are listed on the menu as being available after 10 AM, there was nothing ready at 12:30ish). They had samples out of some of their bars and cake pops, which were delicious, especially the Nutty Nutella Bar. Other than that though, you mostly have the cupcakes to choose from, which come in simple flavors, like red velvet, chocolate, vanilla, etc. ($3 each), or custom creations you can design yourself, or pick from among a list of 18 suggested combinations ($4.50 each). Stopped in here earlier today. This cute little cupcake and sweets shop is relatively new. Though, their cake designs from both online and in their windows are insanely impressive. A giant tiered Pokemon cake greeted me in the shop as well as a molded turkey and pumpkin cake. Cupcakes frosted to appear as boquets of flowers. Adorable idea for weddings. I tried a cappuccino, their cupcakes, and most importantly their cheese clouds. If you do anything when you visit this spot - coffee is discounted early in the mornings - get the cheese clouds! Fluffy biscuity buns covered with cheese and stuffed with cheese, prosciutto, rosemary, and sea salt. My friend went more decadent with her coffee and ordered an iced macchiatto with nutella and fresh cream. It was extremely decadent but the fresh cream on the coffee is luxurious. Cupcakes are made not too sickenly sweet which I like. Very buttery and creamy. Nice fillings. I would go with the peanut butter and jelly combo, birthday cake, or smores cake. Intrigued by what Gianduja is and would have to come back for that one. It's a 30% hazelnut to chocolate ratio made popular in the Napolean age. Had to google it out of curiosity. Cupcakes are around $3-5, pending on how customized you want to go and if you go crazy it can get more expensive but typical for a solid bakery. FYI - this review is solely based on my custom cake experience with Martina. This is an excellent establishment - amazing quality, quick service and reasonable prices. I had a perfect experience with Martina when I was ordering my custom cake, and when I mean perfect...I mean perfect. It was my first time ordering a custom cake and Martina was so kind and patient throughout the whole process, talking me through options and making recommendations to what she thought would be best for my needs even if the outcome was cheaper on her end. I was looking for a custom cake for my boyfriend's birthday and ordered the 8 inch cake, in the shape of a panda face (which I emailed her a few days prior). The cost was $75, a fantastic price for a custom cake in the city and I know this because I did the research!! I workshopped a custom flavor combo with her too - coconut frosting, chocolate cake and rasberry filling (I wanted to do something a little different). The outcome was amazing and I never received so many compliments on a cake. It was moist, flavorful and the texture on the frosting and filling was perfect. Martina executed everything flawlessly from the experience to the appearance to the flavor. I highly recommend this Grade A establishment and I wouldn't go anywhere else for my next custom cake. This fantastic bakery is on my block and I kinda thought they only did cupcakes and other little baked goods until they started displaying their carved cakes in the window. I knew then they would be making my ridiculous "roast pig" wedding cake for my Luau themed wedding party. Martina was instantly accommodating and so easy to plan and work with. We chatted via a email, she sent me a few sketches, we bounced ideas back and forth, and then they executed and delivered the perfect cake (also enormous) to my venue with no hassle AT ALL. I've been here a few times since the week they opened and each and every time I've been really happy with the quality of their baked goods and coffees. Prices recently also got adjusted so that's even more awesome, lol. Martina (owner and head baker) along with her assistant Christina are both really sweet and awesome. The space is small and welcoming with all their baked goods on display for the gawking. The cupcakes here are moist with perfect texture and all their frosting is housemade. Sugar Sketch's menu is also really diverse with a plethora of items that are sweet as well as savory - they even have gluten-free options too! Being more of a savory fan myself I am a HUGE fan of their cheese clouds. OOOOOOMG THEIR CHEESE CLOUDS YOU GUYS!! They come in classic rosemary cheese, prosciutto and cheese and their newest creation TRUFFLE CHEESE. Their classic was my favorite thing here but yesterday I tried their Truffle Cheese cloud and my life was forever changed. I also tried their Nutella Loaf yesterday and it's like a sweet bao bun cake stuffed with Nutella. I went NUTS over it! (Har, har - pun completely intended). I tasted these cupcakes at the NYC Taco Showdown, and they were delicious! I had the red velvet and the strawberry, and although I liked the former more, both frostings (if that's the right word for it) were very creamy and not too sweet, just the right consistency. The red velvet was a lot more moist though for the actual cake part, and the fillings in both were a pleasant surprise. Overall very good cupcakes, but I'm not sure whether I'd be willing to pay the price per cupcake in the store. read more

Dear Martina, I cannot thank you enough for the amazingly beautiful and delicious display you put together for Sofia's baptism. Everything you did was executed with absolute perfection! You truly transformed the whole room. You took such a weight off my shoulders. As Mike C. mentioned and Briana's review reinforces, their doors are currently open (and not just serving 'Custom Cakes' per the categories on the listing), but perhaps the business set their official/grand opening date as the 'closed until' (it's currently soft open with 20% off 9/15-9/18, so perhaps there's a hiatus after that to prep for the full launch)*. I stopped by the afternoon of the 16th and the woman presumably behind the operation was cheerily chatting up another woman who I sure hope was a friend/family member/press, because she not only ignored my presence, but blatantly stood in front of the displays and the register at the moments I needed each most, to the point where I almost walked out. The cupcakes are as small as or smaller than any I've seen, and priced at $3 normally. If you want to add a few mini marshmallows or something from their 'signature creations', tack on another $1.50 (judging by the very sad display of these, you shouldn't do that). I realize they're soft open, but this place is currently a damn mess everywhere besides where customers walk/sit, presumably illuminating their custom cakes roots. This place is AMAZING!! The cupcakes are the best ones I've ever had in this city. Try a "that's amore" with a coffee - it will change your life. The Italian cheese panini are amazing. The bread is perfectly salted and the prosciutto and cheese literally melt in your mouth. Not only is the food amazing - the chef/owner is the sweetest with a beautiful smile and cheerful disposition. She knows her stuff and is happy to share her story - which is delightful to hear while munching on a cupcake. This spot couldn't be a better place for this neighborhood. It's perfectly decorated inside - my fave is the Pokemon go on top :) the only sad part is that I no longer live in the neighborhood...
