We went on a Saturday evening with a group of 7. It was a friendly welcome and then Carlos was our server. He made sure that our experience was top notch. There was never a time we didn't feel like we were the only customers in the whole place. He had great attention to detail making sure we had what we needed. The only reason I do not give five stars is because nowhere is perfect. However I'd love to give 4.5 stars if I could. This is my favorite place to eat when I visit Monterey. The food is awesome. Great quality, tastes amazing. All the employees are nice and welcoming, good service. I think the place used to be a Mexican restaurant but it's a neat setup inside and the patio is cool to enjoy the weather. I've been going here since 2021 when I come up for the motorcycle races, in fact I've told some of my racing friends about Sushi by the Bay. Came here for lunch, was sat quickly. It was busy, but the waitress was prompt to take my order. They have ample outdoor seating for the wonderful Monterey afternoons, but I decided to sit inside. They have high chairs for the kids, and the restroom was very clean. As for the food, I had the Agedashi Tofu, and a dragon crunch roll w/ iced tea. The sauce that came with the tofu was divine. No hyperbole... Probably top 10 sauces that I've had in my life. The 4 stars came from the preparation of the tofu. The tofu wasn't as firm as I like, and the chunks of tofu were too large. I didn't come here for fancy high end fish - I came for a homey Japanese/americano every day meal with the kids, and this place hit the spot. Staff was SUPER nice and efficient. We sat outside on the enclosed patio and they quickly set the table for us. Order of gyoza (kids inhaled it) and agedashi tofu (serviceable, no complaints) for the adults. Kids shared a chicken yakisoba (great flavor, plenty of chicken, cabbage, carrots, sautéed onions). I love me a combo bento box especially with the requisite iceberg salad, bowl of miso, orange wedge. Beef teriyaki had a nice pile of thinly sliced beef. Cali rolls tasted fresh. Grilled mackerel was cooked perfectly. Miso soup had just the right amount of seaweed and tofu. Everything was plated and garnished well, and at no point did anything feel stingy. Staff checked on us to make sure everything was good. Restaurant was clean. Bathroom was spacious and clean - no changing table but there was a medium sized low table that could be used as a changing table in a pinch. This is a tough rating to give. I feel like an accurate rating might be 4.3 stars. They have really good sushi. I would say it is in the top 5 in Monterey County. Their restaurant lacks climate control. The bathroom needs a remodel. The Orion beer they import is AMAZING, and it is awesome that they serve it with a chilled glass. The sushi is good, dont get me wrong. Their Green Muscles are overcooked, and they came out fast. Thats alarming to me as they are supposed to be baked. That said, I have had it done right elsewhere, so I am comparing it to a 5 star. The over cooked I prefer to undercooked lol. The sauce and toppings were authentic and very good. I keep coming back to the sushi. The quality is 5 star, but I feel the menu needs some serious tweeking. Maybe change up some rolls or add some rolls. Its just that feeling you get when you are somewhere you know can make what you want, but they don't have it. It's good. Please don't get me wrong, but there are areas that can be improved upon and I feel like maybe because no one is a stand out sushi star in the area they don't see an example of how. This is a go to place for me in Monterey. I work frequently close by at the Naval Postgraduate School, and stop in here for lunch more than any other place in Monterey. The service is always outstanding and their food, no matter what you order is always quality in both portions and taste. The ambiance inside reminds me of so many little mom & pop places in Yokosuka. I came in at 830p on a Tuesday to pick up my takeout order and the place was completely empty. I ordered a Monterey roll with salmon, cream cheese, cucumber, and fried salmon on the outer layer, plus 3 creamy sauces. Also got a more traditional eel avocado roll. In terms of quality, I was not disappointed at all. However, the Monterey roll was just too cheesy/creamy for my liking. I knew it was a gamble as I don't normally order rolls like this but just didn't have any redeeming qualities. Eel avocado is my go-to sushi, but I felt like the eel pieces in this roll were tiny. Tasted good, but was a bit disappointed with the portioning - the avocado and sauce dominated. We chose Sushi by the Bay over the other sushi restaurants nearby us in Monterey mostly because it was open fairly late (9:00 PM) and the menu listed an appetizer called the "heart attack" (deep fried jalapeños with cream cheese and spicy tuna). Their variety of rolls was intriguing and we liked that there were a lot of fresh rolls and a good number of the rolls did not contain shrimp tempura (we're not fans of it in our rolls). We rolled up around 8:20 and parked right in front on the street. It was dark out so the neighborhood looked a bit sketch with the other empty business parking lots around. We were the only people dining in, but a guy was there picking up a delivery order. Our server/hostess was friendly and efficient. Since we'd already perused the menu before we arrived, we ordered right away: heart attack appetizer, lion king roll, and the hot night roll. Our favorite was the hot night roll. The flavors all went together so well. We enjoyed the lion king but agreed it wasn't the best we've had. We expected the heart attack to be spicier. The concept was great (what's not to love about a lump of melty cream cheese?) but we just felt the two spicy components didn't pack as much heat as we wanted them to. Overall, we were satisfied with our restaurant and food choices. Would we come back here again? I'd say yes! read more
