I found this really good sushi place in Monterey. There's many choices to pick from, but I went with the sashimi combo. I needed some green light, Thinsulin approved food to lower my insulin level. This place didn't disappoint. You order the food, pick up free tea or water, and wait for your food. The sashimi wasn't the freshest I have eaten. It's decent, but not amazing. Way overpriced for what you get, both in food and experience. The menu is overwhelming and confusing and tries to squeeze in too many options on just one sheet and therefore leaves information out. For example, one roll we ordered didn't list shrimp as one of the ingredients, but when we mentioned this after the plate was set down, they claimed the mention of tempura in the description meant shrimp. The chairs are really uncomfortable and they provide the cheapest chopsticks that splinter. Also, just a heads up, this isn't a table-side service restaurant. You have to order at the register. This place just isn't worth it, in my opinion. If they lowered prices to match the level of service and ambiance, then maybe it would be worth it. read more

They have so many food and dish options --from fresh fish to fried dishes to sushi rolls to rice bowls. I ordered the Sushi and Sashimi Combo (#3), and I loved that I got to choose the type of fish for both. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the portion size was perfect -- not too little, not too much. We were fortunate to arrive at just the right time and snag a table before the lunch crowd. The food came out fairly quickly overall. My husband's dish arrived a good 10-15 minutes before the rest of ours. It would've been nice if the dishes came out together, but not a dealbreaker. They have self-serve water and hot tea. The service was warm and accommodating. The workers noticed we were traveling with a baby and immediately offered a high chair, along with a dish and spoon for him. He ended up wanting to nap, so he ended up in his stroller. They have a bathroom on the side(?) of the store. We didn't notice a parking lot, but there is street parking available. Very friendly ambiance, every few minutes a familiar local would walk in and be warmly greeted with a note of remembrance. I felt at home. It's been over three years since we had last been here and didn't realize we'd order just about the same items (red snapper bowl instead of the red snapper bento box and then the rainbow row) but wow the consistency after this many years is great.... This time we ate indoors instead of taking to go and the service was fast--I like the restaurant's attention to detail. They tasted very much like the futomaki and inari sushi that both of my Issei grandmothers made when I was growing up. My husband said the sushi combo tasted okay. Not the freshest. The two California rolls were a bit disappointing. They had chunks of the imitation crab. I had the chirashi (a variety of sushi atop a bed of rice), and my husband had the curry udon. Very different but we were both able to get what we were craving. We also got some onigiri (rice balls) to go to enjoy for later. I appreciated that they had hot and iced green tea for you to enjoy while you eat (and water)! Oh how I love Japanese food and culture, so finding Ocean Sushi Deli on Yelp while visiting Monterey had my heart pumping! The place is small, they get busy at dinner time (I assume lunch too), the menu is absolutely overwhelming and you'll be faced with even more options when you walk in, so I suggest reviewing it ahead of time and knowing what you want when you get there. I ordered a chirashi and it truly had a delightful bit of everything on it! Fresh hamachi, salmon, octopus, unagi, ika and even ikura and a delicious mix of crab and masago filled the beautiful bowl and left me fat and happy! I also sampled the salmon onigiri, which was a decent example of this classic Japanese rice ball snack. I like these at restaurant/delis like this one because they're freshly made, the rice is warm, and they usually have a bit more of the delicious filling too, which was exactly the case here! My family tried a set that included some other maki rolls, and they were good too, with a nice ratio of fish to rice and solid presentation. I enjoyed the chirashi deluxe, and at $25 it was good value. The other sushi was less impressive to me and with the menu being diverse, I think I'd choose to go with a hot plate next time. The vibe is down home, which I like, but with prices that aren't a lot less than other sushi in the area, I might opt for more atmosphere next time. Had the Sunday special-- chicken teriyaki-- lightly seasoned, not drowning in goopy sauce, sashimi, miso soup w/ lots of goodies inside (potato, squash, wakame seaweed, tofu). Great deal for $18 I think? Another of us got the special chicken karaage (fried chicken) special. Good, but better yesterday. Youngest got the soba and natto (fermented soybeans) sushi. Came here on a Saturday for an early dinner. We pushed two tables together for our party of 6. No high chair. Pay at the counter and they bring out the food. No service. They did take a photo for us which was nice. The price point here is a lot higher than we expected for fast casual. We ordered two bowls of udon, two cans of soda, and one rice roll.
