Had heard that this was the place to get the best sushi in town. Service was friendly and we were seated right away at our choice of tables in this small but quaint restaurant. Got a sake and beer to share and two rolls to start. Can't deny loving our two rolls being served on a little sushi boat. Decided to get one more roll. Saw on some reviews that the Lion King was a good option. TBH, we didn't love it. But they were kind enough to put the sauce on the side for us. I think the worst part was just before the final roll was delivered to our table, the restaurant became overwhelmed with the chemical smell of a cleaning product. It was super off putting and we couldn't wait to depart. A somewhat unfortunate way to end our first visit...may be the last.

Outdoor flora near their oh so sumptuous fire pit.

12/27/25 Iron man with soy paper, Crunchy roll, Chicken teriyaki roll with soy paper, and the J roll. Such an adventure in superb coastal sushi. 1/16/26 The Iron man with soy paper (again), the Lion King, and the Mixed Zone roll. We loved the Lion King and how all of the flavors marry so well with each other. The baked salmon, spicy may, the "secret" sweet sauce, tobiko, creamy crab and avocado. All sooo good. But my favorite was the mixed zone. It just tasted so fresh and so clean (big ups, Outkast). The inside has creamy crab, cucumber, and avocado and it was topped with spicy tuna, crunchies, spicy mayo, and sweet sauce. What a great way to round out our day of cycling!!

Good sushi. Good service. They were really crowded when we got there and we thought we might not be able to get a seat, but the wait staff was really nice and was able to find us something. The sushi came in these cool little boats -- I've never seen them before and they felt very unique to them. It seemed to be a well-frequented place, and everyone seemed happy there. Nice atmosphere, holiday vibe. My family enjoyed their meal.

9/10 Amazing sushi, fresh and enjoyable from start to finish. Starting with the sashimi, which was incredibly fresh and delicious. Every piece was well-prepared, with clean, precise cuts that really stood out. The Tekka maki rolls were also fresh and flavorful; however, some of the cuts weren't as precise, causing a few pieces to unravel. Still very good overall. Service was fast and efficient despite how busy the restaurant was. The seating is on the smaller side, with tables fairly close together, but it was still comfortable.

This is a good sushi spot, and everything that we ordered was good in terms of flavor. We ended up ordering 3 rolls and it was about enough for 2 decently hungry people. Service was great; even though the restaurant was fairly busy and a bit crowded, we were always able to get someone's attention. I will say, don't come expecting anything exceptionally fresh (even though it is located right by the sea) -- this is a pretty standard place. The taste is about equivalent to what you can find farther inland.

Waiters and other staff were very friendly and helpful! It was very comfortable and the decor and temperature was perfect. We got seated without delay around 530pm and glad we did as people had to wait after that. They do have a nice outdoor area with outdoor heaters and a fire table - to wait or to eat outside. Food was great, but Eel was slimy which we didn't know was regular or not. Went with 7 other people (party of 8).

Absolutely stunning! The food was so good. The calamari was fresh and plain udon my little got was so flavorful. As we were walking up to the restaurant this woman came running out yelling at a man that just left. As we got closer we heard her yelling "you forgot your card". So on first impressions - great customer service! She took great care of us and ensure my little got her food out first. It's a smaller more intimate space but very welcoming to families of littles. Also excellent music choice. When we are in the area again, we will be back!

Service was great! They look great care of us. We sat out front on the patio. Started with miso soup and steamed gyzoa. Both were delicious! We loved all our rolls. The lighthouse and the Iron Man were standouts.

Thickest pieces of sashimi I've ever had in a chirashi sushi.

I've driven / walked by this place many times, an older home remodeled as a restaurant. It required a few steps to climb. I was always curious about this restaurant, then a friend recommended this on social media. Then another friend posted a pic and said how much they enjoyed, so I had to check it out. I'm really glad I did! My friend had recommended the bento which she ordered again. It looked marvelous, generous portions of tempura and teriyaki salmon (there are several other choices) accompanied by a salad and a scoop of rice. There was enough for her to take home leftovers. I decided to try their chirashi sushi (I asked the server if she recommended it, of course she did, not my brightest inquiry). I've never had such thick pieces of sashimi! Quite tasty, served with a portion of seaweed salad and just enough warm rice (the way it should be). I was very satisfied, indeed! Service is outstanding, friendly and prompt. I'm so glad I checked out the old white house, looking forward to my next meal!

I've been to Zum Sushi twice now while visiting Pacific Grove. Both times I ordered takeout, and the experience was consistent--good, but not great. The sushi is fresh and reasonably priced, but nothing really stood out in terms of flavor or presentation. On the plus side, the packaging is solid and travel-friendly, which I appreciated. It's a convenient option if you're in the area, but next time I'll probably try another sushi spot nearby just to compare. Zum Sushi is decent, but I'm still looking for that standout sushi experience in Pacific Grove.

Sushi by the beach (ish) 5/5 stars because staff were super accommodating Pretty solid! I didn't have to wait too long on a Saturday around 3pm. It's a small restaurant with a good amount of street parking. * I got: - Salmon Lover Roll: this is as it. Having raw fish now inside the roll and outside is what I've been craving. Wish they carried mango sauce tho.. 5/5 stars - Tuna Onigiri: meh. The Tuna was flat. Not the freshest 2/5 stars The staff were wonderful! I don't eat dairy so they were able to swap out my cream cheese which was nice. I'd definitely come back!

I stopped in for a quick bite at the sushi bar after a three-hour drive from the Bay Area. It's a small restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, so plan accordingly if you're going on the weekend. The staff were all friendly and helpful. I trusted the sushi chef to recommend the freshest fish. The hamachi was amazing!! I also had an unusual roll that was served on a small boat. I would definitely go back the next time I'm in the area and craving sushi as the quality was excellent and the prices were reasonable.

I came here for dinner during a work trip with a coworker based on the good reviews. I had the Katsu and a lion king roll. I liked both and the gyoza were really good as well. The staff were friendly and the food came out quickly. They have both inside and outside seating areas. I recommend giving them a try!

This restaurant hasn't been on Doordash for weeks and I used to order from them all the time. It seems like they're closed almost every day now. New year less sushi? What's going on?

They did some interior mods for a few weeks and announced they were closed. They are now open again

Are there gluten free specified options on menu?

Is the patio open for dining? Hoping I can bring my dog.

The inside and patio are open for dining. Call or go by to verify their dog policy.

It is not dog friendly. No outside dining. Indoor dining only in an old house converted to a restaurant.

It was packing up as we were getting ready to leave. I put a lot of faith in our servers. When we go to sushi, we pick 2, then we usually say what we like, and then ask for them to surprise us. This is what they brought out, and we were not disappointed. Everything was awesome. This is a go-to when we stay in Pacific Grove. We will come back again when we visit town.

Servers were fast and effecient. The soups and salads came first and they were OK. We ordered the gyoza udon, chicken teriyaki, chiarshi and a tempura roll. First of all the udon offerings included kimchi udon which I've never seen in a Japanese restaurant. It's obviously some Korean-Japanses concoction. The udon included a couple of diced carrots and brocolli. So kinda an American-Japanese concoction. 1* The chicken teriyaki was chewy and flavorless. Tasted boiled, not grilled. Rice, salad ok but really kind of hard to screw up. 2* The chirashi and tempura roll were a little better. The tempura roll was at least edible but I noticed the pieces were not evenly cut. One was 1/3 the size of the others. If you know sushi, that's a cardinal sin. Also, no wasabi or ginger served iwth any of the dishes. 3* So if you're looking for something resembling real Japanese food Nura ain't it. Won't be back.

Spacious interior and a separate room for private party. Agedashi tofu and the sushi rolls (Aspen, Sun and Whole-Hearted) were delicious and I'd highly recommend for a good variety. I appreciated the freshness of the fish, rice to fish ratio and creativity of each roll. They also have vegan rolls. After lunch at Sand Dabs, we stumbled across this really cute café, and it ended up being the perfect stop. When we walked in, the first thing we noticed was that they were making fresh taiyaki, those sweet, fish-shaped pastries. The fillings offered were red bean, Nutella, and Oreo. There's a small discount if you order two, so we started with the red bean and Nutella, and honestly, they were so good that wished we ordered the Oreo too...warm, freshly made, and really delicious. I'll admit, I've had Taiyaki desserts before and was never a huge fan, sometimes they're bland or overly sweet. These were different. Even my friend said the same thing, we were both pleasantly surprised by how good they were. We both ordered hot teas, which felt perfect for the rainy weather, and I was totally intrigued by their ramen vending machines. You pick your ramen, choose your toppings, place it in the machine, and it fills with hot water and cooks right there. A few minutes later, your bowl is ready. It felt very Asia-inspired and not something you see very often around here, especially in a café setting. This spot is the café version of their main restaurant, which I believe is on Alvarado Street (I haven't been there yet). The service was genuinely great. The guys working were friendly, patient, and took the time to explain everything to us without rushing. You could tell they enjoyed what they were doing. Because it was raining, it wasn't crowded at all, which made the experience even better. We ended up hanging out for about an hour, just chatting, sipping tea, enjoying dessert, and looking out at the water. They also carry Marianne's Ice Cream, so I'm already planning a return visit on a warmer day. And honestly, next time I'll probably try the ramen too, if only for the fun of it and all the topping choices. Parking around the wharf is paid. We parked in a nearby lot and walked over, which was pretty easy, just something to keep in mind. Overall, the vibe was fun, cozy, and relaxed. Great desserts, a unique experience, kind staff, and a really nice place to spend a rainy afternoon by the water. I'll definitely be back.

I ordered the mango matcha latte, which was a whopping $8.75 ($9.55 after tax). I gulped pressing the "pay" button; part of me wanted to swallow the doubt and see if it was any good. TLDR: it was bad. I'm not sure what the mango is made out of, but it is not smooth like a mango jam or puree. The texture is like blended up unripened mango meat. I will say, matcha taste is there, but the entire drink was just extremely sweet and there was little to no mango taste, besides chewing on the chunks in each sip. It's as if the drink was purposely made extremely sweet to hide the quality of the matcha and fruit. I tried finishing the drink since I paid nearly $10 for it but I couldn't, and had to throw the rest away. However, the worker who made my drink was kind and seems very friendly. The interior is very simple and cute, and there is a nice view of the ocean from the outside seating. I just wouldn't recommend the matcha here. Especially for what I paid for, I am pretty disappointed! :(

Parking was only mildly challenging, as a space opened up after only a single lap around the block. Order up at the self-serve order kiosks, tap in your table/counter number, and they bring out your order in a couple of minutes. We had six of us in our party, and most of us kept it simple by ordering the default Tonkatsu Ramen with different customizable options. Most all of the ingredients in this order were on point - The Chasu Pork Belly was tender, thick and delicious, ramen noodles nothing special, but generally stil on point, as were the bamboo shoots. However, the co-star/centerpiece of the Tonkatsu Ramen other than the Chasu Pork slab should be the broth, but sadly the broth was far far TOO salty which overpowered the other flavors in the broth. Chasu Pork 4.8/5, Tonkatsu Ramen 3.1/5. Service was good as everyone was hustling hard in the kitchen, along with attentive bussers/waitstaff to quickly turn tables. They take good care in wiping down the tables here. If I return, I'll just get the Paitan Ramen like I did in years past, as that seemed less salty. Then again the Paitan soup base begins with the same chicken+pork soup base as the Tonkatsu Ramen. I hope Toribashi will step back up to their former glory.
