Coming from out west where we have some out of this world Bass Pro Shops stores, we found Cabelas to be fairly small with a limited selection. That said, we found what we were looking for so no big deal. We had one employee that was not the nicest because my son was pulling toy guns off the shelf to look at them. I was right with him putting them back in a more orderly fashion than they were when we got there, but that didn't matter much to the man we encountered. Our experience with him docked a star. It was Father's Day so there were some additional activities the nice woman working returns told us about as we walked by. My wife and kids picked up a new YETI Roadie 48 for me, and we went outside for some free fishing and hot dogs. Overall a good experience, but I'd recommend the employee in the toy section to remember when he was a child and have some grace with the children. You don't know that the little boy holding a toy gun isn't going to have dad buy said gun. Ripping it out of his hands is a bit much, especially with Dad right there. read more

I've never been inside this store before and I was shocked on how many items this store has that I love. My favorite spot is the fish tank section because it's so relaxing and peaceful. I walked up and down every section of this store to see what all they have and the only downfall I noticed was my wife and I were never greeted by anyone. We walked by and stood next to employees and never got one hi or are you finding everything greet. The cashier was the first person who worked there that actually spoke to us. I was about to buy a hoodie, but decided to pass because of that reason. My wife was really loving this pink hoodie they had, so I bought that for her. I was loving items in there, but now I see what a lot of reviewers were meaning on here about the service. I hope they improve because I'd love to shop with them in the future. read more

I went to Cabela's a few weeks ago looking for a 9 mm handgun to purchase as I was in the process of getting my CCW. I hadn't shot a gun since I was about 8 years old (under adult supervision of course) way out in the desert in Nevada, so it had been decades since I'd shot or even seen a gun. In essence, I knew NOTHING. I expected the experienced sales people at Cabela's to use terms I didn't understand being a novice and perhaps get a chuckle or two out of my ignorance. I was honest in my circumstances, and explained to the best of my abilities what I was hoping to find in a firearm. I was lucky enough to be paired with Josh who was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, attentive, and encouraging ("You're still learning, you'll understand more with more experience.") Josh spent nearly an hour with me showing me different firearms and shared his experience and knowledge with me. He helped me find the perfect balance in quality with my budget and size expectations. He explained far more about the gun than he likely would have with an experienced gun-owner and was very kind in doing so. He didn't act annoyed or inconvenienced. In contrast, it's obvious he enjoys his job and takes pride in educating those of us who are still learning. Not only did Josh not use my lack of knowledge against me by trying to up-sell me on something that I wouldn't have any clue how to operate and wouldn't fit my expectations, but ALSO didn't want me to settle for lesser quality in exchange for a smaller price tag. For the record, their selection was amazing and there is something for every budget. Yesterday, I came back into Cabela's to find a holster after getting my CCW. Again, I was lucky enough to work with Josh who spent a considerable amount of time with me helping me look a holster that fit in my firearm and budget. During both interactions from initial purchase to looking at accessories, Josh was patient, suggested some research resources to help me identify exactly what I needed and wanted in a holster. He also recommended some cleaning kits for preventative maintenance for my caliber firearm but didn't push me to purchase. He educated me on what to look for, and demonstrated what I need to do to keep my gun clean and properly lubricated. What I appreciated was the fact that Josh was more interested in making sure every bit of my purchase worked for me rather than simply making the sale. I call that integrity in salesmanship and is an appreciated quality that will keep me coming back to Cabela's for years to come. read more

Second time at a Cabela's and the store hasn't changed. First time was on vacation and I happened to go there with my family because we didn't know what Cabela's was. I told our young daughter it was a museum because of all the huge stuff animals! Today I went to buy a backpack that I saw online. Very sad to see the Cabela's brand continue to go downhill. Product offerings are diminishing, along with quality. Worst of all is the poor customer service - a drastic change from the past. More than once, my requests for help at the gun counter have been met with apathy and laziness - employees are not even willing to check if an item is in stock. Two particular male employees made it quite obvious that a woman had no business in the gun section without a male relative to escort her. So I go into Cabela's to make a purchase of a $170 multi-tool. I approached the knife counter where another customer was being helped by the employee behind the counter with an item under the case. Their interaction ended very shortly after my arrival, and the customer thanked the employee for his help. Directly after that, the employee leaves the counter, and me along with it without as much as a simple acknowledgement. I did some searching to finally find that the item I was looking for was on a hook on the sales floor, and not behind the counter. This would have saved me a ton of time to have had this information shared with me. Now... checkout time... 2 cashiers, and 2 MEGA long lines. Finally another cashier arrived, so another customer, as well as myself peel off to get in the newly forming line. I was 2nd in this line that had formed of about 9 people. The guy ahead of me was buying 5 fishing lures, and a Mountain Dew. Long story, short- I don't think that the new cashier had ever been trained on the register, as this 6 item transaction took literally 33 minutes. At one point the care-Free manager came over to help, and promptly left after "solving" a reward card issue. I asked if there was anyone else to help, and was ignored. But I only recently decided to make an online purchase because the Columbus Ohio store has sold out of an item. As a result of their poor management of shipping, and their poor attitude toward Customer Service, I will no longer do business with Cabela. I am retired from amazon.com. Long-time customer, all the way back to the catalog days but not anymore. My last 3 visits to the store have been a nightmare. Spotty inventory, cranky employees, no more bargain cave, and most of all- long lines to check out. I mean like 12 people deep with only one lane open and an untrained cashier. A neat store that is very devoted to the outdoors theme. The exterior has a wooden log look, while the inside offers a variety of animals (stuffed) to see and learn about via a touch screen, while a nice sized aquarium showcases live native fish. There is a cafe, and in the back, near the fish, is a pick-up window, making it easy to get anything you order in online. So what to buy? They offer a huge variety of supplies, clothing, shoes, and more for most of your outdoor needs - camping, fishing, hunting, etc. There is a "clearance cave" in the back for treasure hunting for good finds too. Staff is friendly. The parking lot is large, which is good because this place always seems to be hopping when I go over there! read more

I have had my first and last experience with Cabela's at this Cabela's. I needed to register my kayak, so I called to confirm they would be able to get that taken care of for me. They said absolutely, just bring in you paperwork and they could get it done. So I drove over. I get there and I'm told, they can't register my kayak because they are out the stickers. Seriously?!?! That would have been vital information to mention on the phone when I called to ask if they could register my kayak. When I pointed that out, I got a flippant, "Sorry, Field & Stream might have some stickers." Luckily, they were right about Field & Stream. Field & Stream was able to actually help me. Even the gentleman at Field & Stream, that was actually helpful, seems miffed by the situation. If they can screw up something so basic, can you trust them with anything else? My advise, don't waste your time with Cabela's, just go straight to Field & Stream or anywhere else. You'll probably end up somewhere anyway, so save yourself the time and hassle. read more

This is a hunting and camping paradise. There are lots of good deals and sales going on. One can spend hours just looking at all of the neat things they have to offer. I love the nature mountain in the back of the store. This would be a fun place to take kids to see all the different wild animals (stuffed animals). read more

The customer service is apathetic, and sometimes downright grumpy (I'm talking about you, gun counter guys), the store is understaffed and the shelves are half-full in places, often with items without price tags. Checkout is a consistent nightmare. The last 3 times I've been there (I know, I'm torturing myself) there was one lane open. Today, that one lane had 9 people in front of me, many with carts full of stuff. I left the $300 of ammo that I was going to buy behind and went to Field & Stream, across the street, bought my ammo and checked out in 30 seconds. I like shopping at Cabela's at Polaris. They do a good job at providing quality assistance in the store. They also will have great close-out specials. I bought my fish finder at an extreme discount. Online they have really good resources for finding the right fishing equipment for the type of fishing that you want to do. I'm new to the fishing sport so this was a big help. So I stopped by to find a good product for fishing local creeks. The guy there was really excited to help. I tried his recommendation and we caught several smallmouth bass within an hour or so. Last time I went out I didn't get a bite. I went to field and stream first, but there wasn't even a specialist in the fishing department. We had a lot of fun catching the fish. Cabela's made the day again. Before heading out to Lake Erie for Walleye fishing I stopped by to see what I could buy. Towing the boat I needed a large parking lot that some of the smaller fishing stores done have. One of the staff members is a walleye tournament fisher, so he was quick to show me what to buy and how to catch the fish. On the lake I was able to quickly setup the tackle and the fish were coming in the boat before I could get all the rods out. We caught a "Fish Ohio Trophy" size walleye at 30 inches on the rig and info from Cabela's. I can't wait to go back and fish more. read more

So I had a $2350 gun sent to cabelas for an ffl transfer. Called before I had it sent there to make sure I could have it transferred. Pay $85 in shipping, $60 for 2 day and $25 for insurance. It gets to cabelas and when I get there to pick it up they say they return shipped the firearm back to the dealer, which is all the way in Idaho! Didn't call me to make sure that's what I wanted to do, I could have had it sent somewhere else local that could have done the transfer but nope. Oh and they won't compensate me for the $85 in shipping I spent either. Last time I spend money here. read more

This Cabelas was a pretty sizable store with tons of clothing and equipment like usual. These places are typically over priced but definitely nice to get your hands on some things that you wouldn't be able to at a mom and pop style store. I'll probably always be a Cabelas customer. read more

So gigantic it's hard to believe this is their first "scaled-down" location. This store has, to my understanding, half the square footage of floor space of the typical Cabela's. It is a pilot store, opened in Columbus because such a large percentage of Cabela's online orders are shipped to this area. If this store is successful, they have plans to open similar-sized stores in six or so of the other top online-ordering locations. The store was packed. People were lined up, wrapping through the aisles waiting in line to buy guns. Kinda scary. With the exception of the guns and overabundance of fishing poles, I didn't really find anything here to be that much more special than stuff you could get at a Dicks or any other similar themed store. The kayaks were certainly of the same quality at a Dicks - i.e. not great. There was an archery range on site. Don't see that every day. I also touched a $13,000 rifle. The creek scene with all the stuffed and/or fake animals was pretty bizarre and unnecessary. I tried to capture a picture of this bozo holding his newborn (literally looked like it popped out of the womb days earlier) up over his head beside this stuffed beaver so his equally unfit-to-parent wife could snap a photo, but couldn't get my camera open in time. Sorry. Two stars with a plus one for the sheer impressiveness of the gun library and the cinnamon baked nuts they were preparing on site. Oh, I also found the staff to be pleasant. read more

First: what is up with all the haters whining about the clientele or the taxidermied animals? Do you go into a BBQ joint an complain that the music isn't classical and there's no sushi or vegan dishes on the menu? While we're on the topic of annoying clientele, some tree-hugger approached me whining about the rainbow trout in the aquarium, telling me he thinks they'd be happier in a river. I told him they're probably happier in the aquarium than on my dinner plate. But the clientele isn't what I'm reviewing, I'm reviewing the store. So that out of the way, here goes. I've been to the Cabela's in Wheeling, WV and the one outside of Rapid City, SD. I've also been to the Bass Pro Shops outside of Cinci, and the generic Dicks and other run of the mill sporting goods stores, so I have some perspective. This store is about half the size if the other two Cabela's I've been to and a quarter the size of Bass Pro Shops. (Then again, Bass Pro Shops sells boats. Big boats.) This didn't seem to detract from the selection of most things, however. Plenty of bows, crossbows, shotguns, rods & reels, and camping gear. The fly fishing section alone is bigger than the entire fishing lure section at Dick's. The clothing selection is about what you would expect: private-label, some Columbia and the other usual suspects, patterned in everything from camo to tan to the normal "outdoor" colors. The staff is knowledgable, courteous, and helpful. Of course, as other reviewers pointed out, they have basically no ammo that's not for a shotgun, but neither does anyone else right now. If you're looking for ARs or accessories for your AR, they don't have much of that either. But then again they're not trying to outfit Joe Bob Tactical either. I didn't come in expecting a whole department of SWAT gear, so I didn't leave disappointed. Cabela's niche is hunting, fishing, and camping for people who are serious about these things. If your idea of going fishing is going to Antrim Lake, go to Dick's. If your idea of camping is going to the campgrounds at Alum Creek, go to Dick's. But if you are serious about the outdoors, if you're going fishing on Lake Erie or are fly fishing in Wyoming or Idaho, or if a lungful of damp leaves-infused fall air puts a smile on your face as you're sitting in a tree stand or hitting a trail for a 25-mile trek... go to Cabela's. read more

I purchased a S&W Performance Center revolver from Cabela's. Cabela's does not allow you to dry fire their pistols and all firearm sales are final. When I got it home it was not smooth like other Performance Center pistols. I also noticed that the front sight had a kink on it, and that the internal foam in the box had a tear along the middle. I figured I would take it to the range to see if it had any other issues. After shooting it, the trigger got better but not smooth so I opened the revolver to take a look inside. I was shocked to find out that it had rust residue in the internals, as well as, rust and pitting marks on the frame. Additionally the barrel has jagged edges on the crown. If I had been able to dry fire this pistol I would have passed on this pistol. Long story short, you are better off going to Vance Outdoors where the selection is larger, and you can actually dry fire the pistol you want to purchase. It was foolish on my part to assume that the pistol was in good working order when I could not operate any of the actions. It's like purchasing a vehicle and not being able to test drive it. It's your money, if they will not let you dry fire it go elsewhere. There are lots more firearm shops that are truly interested in customer satisfaction. Cabela's is not one of them. read more

First off, anyone who gives Cabela's a 1 star rating because traffic was bad during their Grand Opening, and it kept that person from going to Costco, is CLUELESS! There's a reason why they call it a "Grand Opening." Not being able to go to Costco, must have been the worst day of your life. Before you give a review, maybe you should visit the establishment first. Now for the true 5 star rating. This store is utterly amazing. It literally has everything you want for that outdoors person. Just way too much to list. I don't want to give out too much info, I wouldn't want to ruin the surprise for you. The Cabela's staff was more than professional. They were nice, courteous and very helpful in every way. Will definitely be back, and hopefully backing up traffic. The quality and service of this store is fading fast. I tried to shop here today but failed to make a purchase after 2 attempts. I am a black card member and tried to use their coupon but they couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work in their system. After standing at the register and customer service, the manager just stood there and shrugged his shoulders as I said " forget it. I don't want any of it."
