I went to Cabelas for a gun sale in Nov 2012. I got there before store opened and the line was 30 deep. Once store opened about 8 of us went to the gun dept. I was 5th in line, so i thought. It would be about 15 more minutes before they actually started helping folks. There were 4 clerks behind the counter, 3 helped the first 3 in line, one wondered about. The line behind me was increasing. After about another 15 min the wandering clerk calls out a number. This was my first time in this store, had no idea they went on number order system. No one ever spoke up and said be sure and grab a number folks. The people that were served in front of me never had a number, but 2 of the 15 folks behind me did. So we all make a mad dash for this little number dispenser in the corner. I took it as a lesson learned because it was a good price for the weapons i wanted. For 45 more minutes i watched as they serviced 4 folks that got in front of me after the number fiasco. Finally, my turn, I tell him i want a rifle and a handgun listed in the sale paper and the guy tells me they are out of the handgun i wanted, it's been a busy morning. I told him i was watching all morning and of the 10 weapons purchased, only 3 were the handgun i wanted and none were the rifle. Actually come to find out he had no idea. Fortunately the wandering clerk overheard me and knew of one more of the handguns in back. (a total of 4 in stock for a big sale) So the first clerk began writing me up. He thought he was done with me. I said what about the rifle. Again he says he has know idea if it's in stock. Really i said, isn't it your job to go and find out or is that person not here today. So he reluctantly goes to look and when he returns he says they don't have any, must have sold out. It was the first day of the sale, i ended up being about the 12th person served and i never saw one brought out. I saw it was useless going any further with this guy. I finished the paper work at the counter. It was all the typical firearms paper work. I thought i was done. He tells me no, i have to go over to a second gun checkout area where you go and re-enter all the same info into their computer data base, which lead to another 45min wait after you finish entering your info. Fine i thought, good time to talk with the store mgr. I explain all that has happened. He tried to blow smoke u.m.a about there is a gun shortage and some other bull. After 10 min with him he "relectantly" offers me a raincheck on the rifle and will backorder it, says he can have in 7 to 10 days [heck of a shortage i thought]. So i asked him why someone in the gun dept couldn't do that 12 days ago to have some for the sale....no answer. Then he went in the back and miraculously found one of the rifles, said it was being held for someone picking it up in two weeks and he'd just replace it with mine when it came. Wait it gets better, so when i filled out the info in their data base it asked for my SSN and noted it as "optional", for those that don't know, you give your SSN in the previous paper work filled out for gov't. I chose not to give it because i did not want to have my SSN in one more store data base that is destined to be hacked. So after being there for about 2-1/2 hours, some kid finally calls me to the counter i can finally get my guns and go. He tells me they can't release the guns because i chose not to give my SSN in their system, i would have to wait another week until they can do a more thourough background check. I filled out all the required paper work the gov't required, showed my concealed weapons permit, and required ID just as i have for all other weapons purchased elsewhere, but that's not good enough for Cabelas? I just told him, son, you just keep those guns all $2000.00 worth, and i walked out. Sorry folks for such a long story, but i hope it saves you the gas and the 2-1/2 hours.
