At approximately 6pm, we returned to the apartment and detected a strong smell of gas. We attempted to contact the emergency number provided, making repeated calls (15+) over a 24-hour period, but were unable to reach anyone. As no contact could be made, we arranged for an independent emergency gas service to attend. They arrived promptly and, as a precaution, shut off the boiler supplying four apartments after identifying a potential safety risk. We made further attempts to contact the company via phone, email, and social media, and provided multiple contact numbers (UK and US) to assist communication. We have retained records of these attempts. We did receive an email response after a delay; however, there was no immediate direct contact despite the nature of the issue. Given that this involved a potential gas leak, we would have expected the emergency contact process to function reliably and for communication to be more prompt. In our view, earlier engagement could have helped resolve the situation more quickly. We paid a total of $1,626.02 for the stay (around $406.50 per night). I felt a refund for one night would have been fair under the circumstances. After several emails, they first offered $210. I raised the issue again and mentioned I would consider a credit card chargeback, after which they added a further $162. While this brought the total refund to $372, it still fell short of what I believe was reasonable. After six emails, I decided not to pursue it further. Although the apartment looked lovely in the photos, in reality it was quite tired and worn, particularly the kitchen. Overall, based on both the condition of the property and the way our safety concerns were handled, I would not recommend this company.

Cheri is the new manager and she seems to know the SD market pricing well. Surfstyle makes sure your property is always inspected before and after each rental. This is one of the most important things as a vacation rental. They use a top notch cleaning company as well. We have a home in Winter Park, CO and we had issues with the local property management company. We asked Surfstyle to handle the property remotely and it has worked great. I hired our own cleaning company and inspector. If I had another vacation rental property I would use them again. I was surprised to see the negative reviews. Yes, they do vet guests to avoid the parties. Our home is in a quiet neighborhood and not a party atmosphere. I am happy they vet our guests. You guys are great Surfstyle!

Austen and Dani were so accommodating and welcoming, and took care of all of our needs quickly and completely. Denise, the owner, is so quick to respond to any email communication, and so very helpful. Ocean Beach, fondly known as "OB" offers so much, from Sunset Cliffs, shopping, easy walking, and such beauty. We love finding dinner at the Wednesday evening Farmers' Market, walking two blocks to the ocean from our cottage, and shopping downtown on Newport Avenue. It's great, not to mention unusual, to have a safe and secure parking spot off street, but BHC offers just that. And 20-30 minutes away by car: San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Coronado Island, Torrey Pines, Shelter Island, Little Italy, Gaslamp District, and more. We have already booked for next year!

It may not be the most updated hotel on the boardwalk, but it has everything you need. The staff is always welcoming, the house keeping staff are friendly and trustworthy, the parking lot is gated and secured by a guard throughout the day, the rooms are always clean the grounds are well maintained, and after all the years of being loyal visitors, we have yet to experience anything negative at this property. I love that the grounds are secure and you can allow your children to go into the courtyard area and play the provided games with peace of mind- knowing that they'll be safe. They provide tons of outdoor seating options and grills for tenants, which makes cooking a breeze. In order to enter from the beach/boardwalk, you must have a room key to enter the premises- another awesome perk. This keeps all the riff-raft out of the area. &At night, they also require a room key to enter through the front of the building- which is a newer feature, and much appreciated. You can leave your beach toys & chairs outside your room without worrying about someone coming to steal it. We have locked our bikes up downstairs in the courtyard area & nobody messes with them. This is such a great place to stay & an amazing tradition that our family has. We look forward to our visit every May!

Less than a month before my stay Jeff and a co-host, Sisco cancelled my reservation saying they had to "redo" something in the unit and had to start on it immediately. They then stated the unit would not be available during my dates. Doing further research the unit was available to book weeks before my date. Then after I was cancelled and given my refund the dates I chose became available for a price increase equaling over $3500 plus fees. They most likely took a $50 penalty on their end. I could not change my dates and booked months out for a reason. I had to scramble and find a new stay because these guys wanted to be greedy. They realized they had an error for the price I was given and decided they wanted to cancel me for more money. As a host all they have to do is tell Airbnb that they are "fixing" the unit, then able to cancel someone. If I cancel my trip I lose half or all of my money to a host. This is not ok and should not be allowed and although nothing can really be done potential clients need to know how these folks handle business. I have also stayed at this unit before with a group of friends which is why I was familiar with it. I would NEVER book with this realty group again or this host.

Why rent a room when you can rent a whole house just steps from the ocean? Our group did just that and made an exquisite beach house from Mission Sands Vacation Rental our home for our recent trip to paradise in Mission Beach, which spans nearly two miles of oceanfront. The property was everything we anticipated and more. It was full of charm and beautifully decorated! From the moment we walked in the door, we felt right at home. Our three-story ocean view townhouse featured 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, as well as a private rooftop patio. It sleeps up to 12 people, so we had plenty of space, along with everything we possibly could have wanted at our fingertips. The house was ideal for our needs, as it was very well-equipped with all of the essentials plus some. It offered all the comforts of home with the added benefits being on vacation. They even offer a concierge service to guests who want to walk into a fully stocked kitchen or want recommendations for activities and restaurants in the city during their stay. There's the convenience of three parking spots, a full kitchen, washer/dryer, grill, WIFI, bikes, and 3 balconies for guests to use during their stay, just to name a few! Aside from all of the amazing amenities, the location of our rental was phenomenal. A few steps out the front door and down the walkway and you're on the sand! We could walk and ride bikes all around Mission Bay on the Bayside Walk and cut over to the ocean easily. The unit had plenty of indoor and outdoor space for socializing as well as private spacious bedrooms and quiet sitting areas for anyone to go off on their own and have some alone time. Perhaps our favorite spot on the property belonged to the rooftop patio, where we loved spending the day taking in the ocean breeze and the evening underneath the stars. Side note: We highly recommend making s'mores on the rooftop and taking in the sunset! In our experience, the rental process with Mission Sands Vacation Rentals was very streamlined, which is appreciated by those who are new to vacationing here and unfamiliar with the location. Ocean Beach Park Units…read more Beautiful Location, Excellent Management -- But Long-Standing Safety and Maintenance Issues Need Addressing We've been coming to this unit at Ocean Beach for 5-6 years, and there is a lot we love about it. The view is fantastic, parking is secure, and the unit itself is spacious and consistently clean. Communication from the management company was excellent as always -- clear instructions on rules, security codes, and answers to questions before we even had to ask. That said, there are two issues we feel need to be raised, one inside the unit and one outside of it. Interior maintenance: None of the interior locks (bathrooms, bedrooms) function properly. This isn't new -- it's been an ongoing issue every time we've stayed here over the past several years. We understand things break, but a problem that persists for 5-6 years across multiple stays is a fixable maintenance item that shouldn't still be outstanding. Safety and enforcement in the surrounding area: This is the bigger concern, and the reason we're reconsidering how often we book here. Throughout our stay, we regularly encountered individuals in visible mental health crisis behaving in threatening or indecent ways near the building -- several instances of public indecent exposure, and unpredictable verbal outbursts directed at people who got within 40-60 yards. In addition, the public lot next to the building (between our building and the lifeguard station) has become a semi-permanent encampment of RVs and cars, with tents, BBQs, and debris that don't move for days at a time -- despite posted signage prohibiting parking from 2am-4am, which should give authorities the basis to enforce turnover. We regularly saw arguments, yelling, and thrown items from this same group. On our last morning, as we were checking out, five police cars and what appeared to be a sanitation crew arrived and began clearing the area. We had to leave before seeing the outcome, but the timing says it all: enforcement action came right as we were leaving, after being exposed to the underlying problem for our entire stay. This isn't a one-time thing -- it's a persistent condition of this stretch of Ocean Beach. It's had a real cost: we used to coordinate trips here with three other families, booking multiple units at once, and they've stopped coming because of what they were exposed to. We love this unit and we love Ocean Beach. But we're increasingly weighing what we're paying against what we're exposed to, and that comes down to a lack of consistent enforcement by the city and local businesses -- not anything within the unit or management company's control. If these two issues (locks, and the surrounding safety/enforcement situation) were addressed, this would easily be a 5-star stay every time.
