We stayed at the motel last summer. It was the worst hotel we have ever stayed at. The bathroom towels had giant brown stains on them, along with greasy hand prints on them. The furniture was old and broken and the combination sink/stove/refrigerator was disgusting. You could find better furniture in the trash than what was in the room. We stayed in a room that had been pictured on their website and it's pretty obvious the web pic was at least 30 years old. The front office also reeked of weed and the guy who checked us in was completely stoned. Spend a few more bucks and stay elsewhere! read more

I highly recommend this motel if you're in Durango looking for an affordable place to stay near the downtown area. The staff is polite and attentive. The grounds are well kept and the rooms are clean and comfortably cozy. The ice machine was right across the parking and there was a lovely outdoor seating area where guests could sit and enjoy the night air. Also if you're so inclined there is a mini game/arcade gazebo. All and all I think this is a definite rustic diamond in the rough! read more

This motel was like walking into a cozy cabin out in the mountains. From the rustic interior to the beautiful wood walls, we felt right at home. The staff was friendly, helpful, and had great vibes! The wifi was a little shaky (no biggie). Other than that, we would return to this motel in the future. BONUS.. the Durango Train Station is located only 5 miles down the road! read more

We loved staying here. Weston helped accommodate our pets. The room was large and bright and Adrian was always helpful and willing to bring us fresh towels. We loved the little fenced yard for our dogs. My husband, a musician, couldn't help but play the electric guitar in the common room. The property was quiet and we loved it. Heater kicked butt and helped warm our California blood in the Colorado snow. The only drawback, in my opinion, is that the bed was a little hard. Woof, this was rough. My family travelled to Durango for the week. We called and booked a room at the Caboose Motel, and asked the gentleman on the phone for a room with a kitchenette (we like to cook), and asked for a cot for my 7 year old son. He told us both requests were no problem, and we booked the room. When we arrived however, the lady working the front desk told us they don't have a cot and she didn't know why we were told that. She said we must have spoken to her husband, so she goes and gets him. He comes out looking super disheveled and is rude as hell. He said , and I quote, "we don't have a cot, I never told anyone that, so do you want a refund or what?" Literally his first sentence to us. Hadn't even checked in. Basically called my wife and liar and I wanted us gone. The wife shoo's him away and she tells us he's sick. Okay, fine. Maybe a reason he was so awful. We get to the room, and there's no kitchenette. So we really only needed two things for this trip- a cot for my son, and a kitchenette. We had already got groceries for the week and now we have no way to cook it. We figure there must be some mistake, so we go to talk to someone. Notice the broken down truck outside the door. Okay, this is fine. Another gentleman, who later told us he was the father of this family, meets us and we explain the situation. He agrees that is totally messed up, but there's no cot, and they rented the kitchenette to someone else. Wow, awesome. So he says they have a hot plate we can use. Trashy, but whatever, we're used to camping. He disappears and comes back, says someone else has the hot plate. Great. Cool. This is awesome. To his credit, he was polite, and went and bought us a hot plate to use. The first helpful person. We have no dishes, since there's no kitchenette, so he brings us a milk crate full of assorted dishes. They're all dirty. Don't worry, we can wash them for you in our bathroom sink, sir. He asks us if we'd be willing to move when the kitchenette room becomes open. Absolutely! We say. So we get settled. The room isn't super great. The bed was so uncomfortable. I had 3 nights of awful sleep. Partially because the bed is so hard, and partially because my 7 year old is kicking me because they don't have a bed for him, which they said they did. The heater didn't work and it was stormy, so the room was uncomfortable and cold. There was grout missing in the bathroom so we had to be careful walking on it. And guess what, the kitchenette room- who knows, we never heard back from anyone. Place was awful, service was awful, paid for a room we didn't get. It would be different if someone had come to offer us a discount, a free night, anything. But we saw no one the rest of the trip. Avoid this place at all costs. There's tons of motels within a mile of this place. I'm more tired from staying here on my vacation than before I came. Thanks for nothing, Caboose! read more

Dog poop all over the property - I think it's mostly the owner's large black lab. I had dogs with me and they have a great little fencedin yard. they also have a great firm, new mattress but that's where it stops. Yucky dirty looking random cups, glasses. Wouldn't have touched them. Also creepy towels from the 50s...think and creepy. One would think that if they are going to buy a great mattress (memory foam) and not spend a few dollars on towels and clean glasses. Won't be going back in Durango. read more

Broken hot water faucet on sink, been that way for a long time, the paint behind the faucet was wore off from people trying to make it work, shower curtain fell off a lot, no heat , room got down to 60 degrees, internet was crap, office was not attended and the door was locked , phone not answered when called for these problems . hotel poor condition. this place is double the price for what they provide. Rough on the outside, actually pretty impressive on the inside. Nice rooms and amenities for the price. HERES THE CATCH: you're in bad company. Paper thin walls, sketchy check in, weird guests who's conversations keep you up all night..The shower was not clean in my room, I honestly don't even wanna talk about what I discovered in there. I only recommend this hotel to those on a budget, staying only 1 night, who keep to themselves & sleep heavy. again, the room was super cute, fridge and microwave were in great condition. Wouldn't leave valuable items in my room. Basically feels like a hostel with more privacy... kinda.. OH & the room smelled overwhelmingly like maple syrup... a smell I can't stand. Staff was so great, helpful and courteous. The rooms themselves include a kitchen, fully equipped with stove, sink, fridge, dishes, silverware, the whole shebang. The bathroom is nice, soap, shampoo, conditioner and lots of towels ready. Flat screen tv with cable. Air conditioning. This place had everything I could ask for and more. Price is reasonable too, $100 a night in a busy tourist town. It looks a little rundown on the outside, but rooms are nice. I felt like I was at home. read more

We chose The Caboose because it has so many great reviews and we try our best to support family owned businesses. We original made reservations to stay 4 days, then added a day, then added yet another day making our stay 6 days. Every time we called to change our reservations they were very accommodating. Our check-in was very smooth, we were greeted by two friendly dogs Jada and Buddy. Weston checked us in and he was very pleasant and informative. We made visits to the office regularly to say hi to Buddy, Jada and Weston would always come out as well to talk to us and suggest places to visit. I loved this motel, very accommodating and friendly. You know they value their guests. I would definitely recommend The Caboose to anyone! I can't wait to go back to Durango because I know there is a great family owned business to stay at. read more

It looks like other Yelpers rated this motel highly because of the friendly and responsive staff, which is 100% true. The people are terrific. Unfortunately, the place is a bit old and missing some basics. There are no land lines in the rooms so if you need anything from the front desk you must walk down the hill to the office. The amenities I'm used to from Quality Inns and Best Western motels throughout the state were all missing: I had to go down to the office for an iron and ironing board and carry them back to my room. There is nothing in the bathroom but a bar of soap (no shampoo, lotion, etc) and the towels are thin and worn. Not much is provided other than the basic room. Bikers seem to be common guests so you may hear motorcycle engines in the early morning as they head out. On the plus side, the rooms have kitchenettes which include a stove, fridge, microwave, coffee maker and sink and are stocked with dishes and towels. There's a City Market supermarket close to the motel so you can buy basics and save some money on food. We stayed for two nights in June 2013 and were spread across three rooms. The manager turned on the air conditioners before we arrived so the rooms were all nice and cool (very thoughtful). As others said, the people running this place are top notch. As long as you know what you're getting in terms of amenities, you won't be disappointed! read more

On April 1,2022, I booked a room online. I received a confirmation number, which means the place accepted the request. That was 10:20 am. I called at 6:42 to tell them, I would be in around 8:00. The person I spoke to was a male. I gave him my name and told him we were on our way. He said to call when I got there. We arrived around 8:15pm. I called him and he said he be back in 3 min minutes. There was another couple there waiting too. He came up and just sat in his car and said the keys in the box. I looked and nothing there. I told him and he says , then something about we had no Reservation. He finally got out of this car and went inside to the computer. He said 'no you don't have one'. I showed him my email on my phone and he still says no. I told him you better not charge my card. The girl in the car started saying things about the card can't be charged. We left and looked for a room. Alot we're booked and full. This inconvenience had us to sleep in our truck. It was not too cold. But it was frustrating and rude. I did call the booking agent and they said the place accepted the reservation! This place needs to be honest. I know they had a room just too lazy to take care of it!!! read more

So months in advance of a Memorial Run this place offered a special group rate on rooms. They called repeatedly getting our group to secure rooms. From day one they never had it together. Some of us had to make our arrangements twice before they were locked in. We were given a good price. When my wife and I got to the office, we were greeted by a young man who insisted we were mistaken. Never checked with anyone else, nor was it written on any reservation. They charged us over twice the amount agreed on. We could've been stuck paying that price. We got lucky, found the last room at another motel. We spent just a few dollars more a night than our original "special price". I'm still floored that they prompted a good friend to solicit us from Texas, on his word. On top of that nearly ruined our chances at attending our great friends Memorial. Screw them. If I could give them negative stars I would. This isn't about the money, it's about principle. Not waste your time they do not keep their word, or have their stuff together. I wouldn't stay there now for free. If I could I'd give them negative stars. read more
