Love this addition to Vienna. This place is located at the back of an industrial park and is right off of the W & OD bike trail. This place has a dual personality. On one hand you have the very chill bar and patio areas, and on the other you have the more sophisticated looking dining area that's spaced out so that it never really looks crowded. We've always had fantastic service here whether we were 2 of 5 or so people at the bar or 5 people back from it. As far as their beer, they've got a nice solid core group of beers including the Box Car Brown ale which is delightfully smooth. They also do a nice rye (Casey Jones) and a they usually have a seasonal or two on which are always worth trying. The only halfway negative thing I have to say about this place is that the parking is a nightmare. I believe that's more of the complex's fault rather than theirs though. I will say, be mindful of the space you find to park in. Some of their neighbors have time limits that only pertain to their business. I'm a fan of Caboose and look forward to many more visits. read more

The location is slightly off of the busy streets of downtown Vienna, and the interior of the place is very roomy but cozy. There is a lot of natural light and wooden walls and furniture, which I love. The staff is very friendly and attentive and the beers are great! I got the brewer's flight, which is a nice variety, in my opinion. We went on a Saturday at 1pm ish, so they were still serving brunch. I wish there were more appetizer options but I got the french toast, which was delicious. My friends and I would definitely go back soon. read more

I was disappointed for several reasons. My husband and I got there at 2:45 on a Sunday and were told that they just stopped seating people and wouldn't be seating again until 5pm. The hostess said that this was because they had to "prepare for dinner." I'm not sure what that means, since that's something that should be happening behind the scenes, in the kitchen. In terms of the tables, "getting ready for dinner" meant putting out place settings which took three minutes. The bar area was very crowded and standing-room only. We were told that ordering food was also cut off between 2:45 and 5pm, so the prospect of standing and having a beer on an empty stomach became even less appealing. It was very frustrating to see lots of open tables, more and more as the hour went on, and we were not allowed to sit anywhere. At one point a server walked past and asked if we had been helped, and I said, "Just kind of annoyed that we can't sit anywhere." He said, "Yeah..." and just walked away. The place markets itself as a brewery, but when you get there it seems like Caboose is trying to be a fancy restaurant. I don't see anything practical about not letting your customers sit down. We left after one drink, and I noticed that a couple other groups of people left quickly, too. I ordered the Citra Wheat beer, which was definitely not a wheat beer. I had expected something like Shock Top or Blue Moon, and this was hoppy and barely tasted of grapefruit at all. read more

I love Caboose Tavern for brunch. Nice and bright just along the bike path in Vienna is my favorite location. Definitely get the French toast sticks (drool!) and order coffee, they source from Caffe Amouri up the street. It's CA's Blue Ridge Blend that they're serving. So good. read more

My husband and I stopped in on a lark, looking for something new, and am so glad we did! There's a certain amount of shame associated with how much we ate, but it was that good. We also shared nearly everything! We had the duck and chicken liver pâtés, while duck had the edge; both were great. Loved the crackers, cornichon, and caperberry that came with, and the citrus/crab compote. Mmmm. The macaroni and cheese was pretty delicious, a nice single serving size. I liked the mini macaroni, and the bechâmel. The pork belly was incredible. The grits on which it was served were a bit glue-y, but that's a tepid complaint from me. I would have still licked the plate if I thought no one could see me. We ordered a second helping. Steak with marinated enoki mushrooms was very satisfying, I'd have eaten a plate of the mushrooms alone. Skip dessert, get beer. Everything we tasted was great; trying the flight was fun. I was happy to see a short/sweet wine list, too. Overall, service was great. The place is just cool, and we really enjoyed ourselves. We can't wait to go back! read more

Went there last night. This brew pub is a work in progress. The bar is open and functional. The kitchen has yet to open, waiting final county approval. The bar room/dining area isn't fully finished. 1.) The management team is super friendly and engaged with the guests. We were there for just one pint and spent at least 5 minutes with 2 different managers who came by to tell us the "story" of the brewery and ask us for feedback on the brews. Both managers seemed to genuinely want feedback. Patrick was kind enough to tell us to expect bike racks (see below) and possible live entertainment. 2.) The facility itself isn't very big. It is in an industrial building shared with a Cross Fit and I think maybe a auto repair business. The dining/bar area doesn't have full seating yet, nor is it decorated. I know, they opened early to spread the word about the beer. The bathrooms have 1970's style New York City subway tagging-like murals. Please change this, not your fault, but subway art makes me think about the smells from NY subways and stations. I know you are in VA, but you might want to re-think that. 3.) Kind of an odd location, but it makes sense. We walked up the train trail from Vienna proper and there were hundreds and hundreds of walkers, power walkers and cyclists--and in the summer will probably want a beer. The front of the building doesn't appear to have very much parking options and it isn't clear where you can legally park--especially when there are so many auto repair and auto body repair businesses that have tow trucks. It would not be fun to make a parking mistake and get towed. Please put signage up indicating where it is OK and safe to park. 4.) I won't be too harsh on the beer, they just opened. I had the Rye Pale Ale which looked good, but had a grassy and soapy off flavor and needed some late edition "C" hops or dry hopping to go with the bittering hop. The stout had way too much vanilla, which overpowered the toasty and coffee notes. We would have bought more pints, but had to walk back to Vienna--down the trail before it got too dark. The pints were over $7, which is too too much for beers that have flaws or are in an experimental state. 5.) The clientele will probably like this place. Fairfax County has a lot of wanna be beer snobs that don't know the difference between a Cascade hop and Saaz hop. There were quite a few people with dirty and crusty growlers looking to fill them. Personally if I was a brewer I wouldn't fill a dirty growler because it would make my beer taste like whatever bacteria is in the dirty growler. Maybe offer to rinse the grolwer and cap in PBW to these folks and find a polite way to tell them it is best to come in with a clean growler? Maybe give them a free sample while the growler gets de-grossed. In closing, we will be back probably several times. Would like to see what the menu will be like. Can't wait to see what the finished bar/dining area will be like. Hope they tweak the flaws in the 2 beers we tried, because they were close to good. I would also hope they adjust their pricing to $5-$5.50 for a pint. I know Fairfax County is a very wealthy area and the wanna be beer snobs would probably shell out $15/pint to be seen at a hipster joint. But the quality that we tasted wasn't $7/pint, not yet. But thank you for opening and gicing us more craft brew options. Will be back in a few months and re-evaluate. $7/pint, ouch. read more

Their GoTab app to order wasn't working for my friend. A server came up and asked my friend to try again. Still wouldn't work so the server took his order manually. Then he tried to order beers for he and wife. It wouldn't work and my friend was so frustrated at this point that he nicely said forget the beers. No apologies from server and then I got my food way before my friend and his wife. The food was decent, not great. When I emailed them about the situation, I got no reply which has really added to my negative review. We had wanted separate checks but they said they weren't able to do that. Not sure why they can't get a system that will do that as I know other people request this as well. Have been there before but won't go back. read more

I road my bicycle from Alexandria just to visit Caboose Brewery. Sadly I don't think it was worth the 40 miles round trip ride! I had Caboose's Citra Session IPA. It was fine, but not very memorable. I also had brunch (I visited on a Sunday). I had their "Crispy Potato Hash" and a side of sage sausages. The sausages consisted of five or six (I forgot to count) slightly browned breakfast-style links. They were fine, but nothing special. The sausages cost $7, which I thought was fair. The potato hash was just home fries topped with a sunny-side up egg . It was topped with "truffle parmesan foam" and "wild ramp hollandaise". The egg yolk combined with the foam and hollandaise resulted in a lot of liquid and the hollandaise sauce also broke. I didn't detect any ramp flavor in the hollandaise. The potato hash cost $11, which I thought was high, considering it wasn't very large and was basically home fries with an egg on top. I sat at the bar. Service from the bartender was good, but my food took a long time to come out (I arrived shortly after they opened). Also, they served my sausages about 10 to 15 minutes before my potato hash. I thought it was strange that both items weren't served at the same time. My visit was on a nice Sunday in July 2016. It was reasonably busy and it was apparent that most customers road their bikes there (as I did). (Caboose is right along side the W&OD trail.) It's unfortunate Caboose doesn't provide better bike parking. Their bike "rack" is one of those low things that just hold your front or rear wheel. Since there's not a lot of metal or structure to the rack, there's really no way to properly lock your bike. Yelp defines two stars as "Meh. I've experienced better", which is a fair rating for my Caboose Brewing experience. read more

There are some tables outside which will b nice on a sunny day. All beers are rich and robust, and made on premises. Staff is nice and attentive. They have a few bar food items. We tried fries that came with mustard and tomato sauce. And the pub cheese was nice with beer but needed more crackers. I was looking for a pretzel but none. I got a cocktail with egg whites which was yummy and tasted like butter beer and a charcuterie board but the thing that bugged me is that the board came with really unappetizing crackers. Walking in the brewery had a nice appearance inside and out. As soon as the host sat us at 4pm on a Sunday some confusing, unnecessary and cumbersome process of arranging if we were to stay in the dining room past 5:15. Apparently we needed reservations or something but they had open tables past 6pm. Also the kitchen was closed or something till 5:15pm. I ordered a beer, it was not good, I couldn't finish it. Let's just simplify some things. You're a brewery, make good beer. You're a restaurant, make food. You're either all open or all closed. You either have open seats or you don't. Complicated things are fine during the week or while I'm at work, but aside from that the complicated limitations of your facility was entirely unnecessary. I'm good with never returning again. Usually that warrants one star, but because your brewery gave the appearance of a nice evening there you'll get a second star for wishful thinking. read more

I love that the food is all local. Even the hush puppies were made of locally ground corn meal. It's a little pricey, but what isn't expensive in the DC area. Parking is a royal pain in the butt for happy hours. There simply isn't enough parking nearby. Parking becomes more available after about 8 PM. Bar food menu is a little weird, for example offering smoked trout with pickled onions in a small jar. Who eats pickled onions these days? Who even uses it as a garnish? Ugh. The crackers served with them have a weird after taste. Very unappetizing. The beer choices are great if you like IPA types. I've been there twice and neither time did they have all their beer choices available. If you like lagers or pilsners your choices are far fewer despite all the offerings on the board. Between the pain in the butt parking, weird food, and limited beer choices, I am in no hurry to return to this place. read more

The booming micro/nano craft brewery scene in Northern Virginia is a welcome sight. Due to the antiquated Virginia alcohol laws, places in the state that serve beer/wine/hard liquor must make at least 60% revenue on food in order to serve hard liquor. So that's why you constantly have servers sticking menus in your faces the minute you sit at the bar at Coastal Flats, Artie's, Sweetwater, etc. (not to pick on the Great American chain....) But I digress. Caboose and other "boutique" style breweries (micro or nano) only serve beer. Caboose has a kitchen and they create some wonderful farm to table things here, which other reviewers here have raved about. The beer is varied - more so than Aslin in Herndon. The location literally a few steps away from the W&OD trail means lots of riders in full regalia show up at the bar. I've been here several times and find the staff, and the other patrons, to be a notch above the boring "foodies" you find at the aforementioned joints. Give them a try! read more

Very nice brewery with a fairly good selection of beers. We've been multiple times and during warmer weather it's always packed! Other times on a cold Wednesday evening it won't be as busy in the off season. I love all of the food I have tried there, including the Mac and cheese, wings (but you should really give the option to serve them with blue cheese :) ) , chicken pot pie, Brussels sprouts, and probably others. Only complaint would be the small portion size in relation to some of the prices ($10 for a tiny skillet of Mac and cheese. Delicious, yes, but not ideal for the pocket) The bartenders are generally friendly and it's a nice spot if you want to get away from the newly opened and usually crowded Caboose Commons in Merrifield. They have happy hour too, which is an added bonus. I would recommend if you like good beer and food! read more

Avoid the Heirloom popcorn! Caboose Tavern is a great Vienna VA destination with excellent draft choices and interesting and usually tasty, very enjoyable food. Some of the best french fries I have eaten were at Caboose Tavern the first year it opened. I am in my 70s and have eaten many a french fry. Usually I would award 5 stars to Caboose, for many reasons. Our family visited for drafts and snacks one unseasonably warm afternoon in late December 2019 when we joined other patrons outside, thanks to fossil fuel induced global warming. We ordered Heirloom popcorn. It is dressed with duck fat and Korean chili, but we did not expect to find its pungency unpleasant and offensive for all 5 of us. Even though we were outside, we moved the unfinished bowl of popcorn from our table so that we didn't have to smell it. read more

Friends and I stopped by here for dinner after we heard about its grand opening the week before. The location is in a warehouse area, which is unsurprising given that they brew their own beer, but we certainly wouldn't have known about it if we had not looked up its location. Despite its location however, the ambiance of the restaurant was a very nice and lightly fancy environment. We had a little bit of a wait for a table of 7; it didn't look like there was a plentiful amount of seating indoors. There were tables outside for only drinking as there were signs that said no food was allowed outside. Parking could also be problematic since their lot wasn't too large. This restaurant is one that definitely emphasizes the local-grown, organic aspect of their food, with all the descriptors of their food having such words in the captions. That said, the portions of food were tiny. I got the bratwurst which was $10, but came out to be a tiny bratwurst that was about the size of a small hot-dog. While it did taste pretty good, I would definitely not have paid that much money again for that portion size. My friends and I also got some cured meats and cheeses (I don't really remember what they were), all of which were pretty tasty but again, it was expensive. The beer is the only reason I would come back. The Vanilla Bean Hobo Stout was delicious and went down smoothly. We also got the hops and malts sampler which had a good selection and all the beers were definitely very good. That said, the price of the samplers compared to other places is pretty expensive, as with the food. The money was worth it for the experience of eating tasty local-grown/sourced foods and pretty good beer, but I would not come back for more than the beer. As a food location, don't come here hungry because that's what we did and we ended up going to another place to buy more food just because we were so hungry. Long story short, expensive prices, decent to good food that was organic/local-grown, and good beer. read more

Delicious beer, mediocre small plates. I've got no complaints about the beer. Solid selection of classic, if slightly unadventurous, styles, well-executed. Tried the sampler and the guest tap; would drink again. I have some words on the food, though. If you're going to charge $10 for small plates, you've really gotta stick the landing, and only one of the four entrees I tried left me satisfied. The charred lettuce salad was nice in concept, but the lettuce came to the table utterly soggy, and the spoonful of foam on top didn't do much to help that impression. Flavors were fine, but the dish is in serious need of a textural overhaul. The sliders were, again, well-conceived, but the buns tasted dry and stale. Nice flavor profile overall, and the beef was very nicely cooked, but an unfortunate bread situation. The pommes frites were fine, though unsalted. The included spicy mustard worked well as a dip, but my wife and I found the house-made catsup to taste almost like unseasoned tomato sauce. The Mac and Cheese was nicely done. Good selection of cheeses and cooked just right. No complaints. Service was prompt and friendly. I'd heard rumors that Tim Ma was originally approached to design the menu, and I can only imagine how fantastic that might have been. As it stands, though, this is a far better place to grab a drink than to have a dinner. read more

As a recent transplant from Central Virginia and someone who dabbles in homebrewing I love drinking local brews and supporting local business. When I initially moved here I was looking for a place near by that would be a great spot to hang out and take friends and Caboose has become one of those regular spots. I love the atmosphere in the location, whether watching people park their bikes and come in to grab a beer or hanging outside the location is just a good combination of things. I've gone to eat at Caboose a few times and a few times just to grab a beer. The location is a great size. They have two floors with tables on both and a good standing area near the bar and outside. You can either ride your bike there on the W&OD Trail or drive to the location - although your first time driving there you might feel like you are lost. The food is all served in small "tapas" style dishes and I believe all sourced in Virginia. I regularly order the Mac & Cheese which is delicious. The beer is good and reasonably priced, they also sometimes carry beers from Central Virginia brewery James River Brewing. On Thursday you can also get $2 off your growler fill up. read more

Just moved back to the area and was pleased to find this new business in Vienna. Many brewpubs focus on the beer and the food is an afterthought. At Caboose the food is on par with the beer - - both excellent. My wife and I shared several of the small plates (the burger was exceptional! ) and she enjoyed her glass of wine while I had a flight of beer tasters. John, our waiter, did a great job explaining the beers and the farm-to-market menu. Great location just off the W & OD Trail. read more
