I went with my boyfriend on a Thursday evening. I was surprised by the number of people who were there on a weeknight. When we first went in, the hostess was nice and seated us very quickly in a secluded spot and left us our menus. They have a great variety of foods. I was actually quite surprised by it. I had never been to a restaurant that specializes in desert before this, so I didn't really know what to expect. They have a sweet menu that lists all kinds of sweet deserts made with chocolate, a regular menus and a chocolate bar menu. We decided to share the bitter chocolate experience for 2. I strongly suggest it if it's your first time and you're not too sure what to pick, since it comes with a fondue, a grill (for marshmallows), fruits, hot chocolate and waffles. The food wasn't too sweet nor too bitter. They managed to make it just right. It was very rich though, so we ended up eating about half of our food and we were full. The portions don't seem that big, but you should never underestimate the richness! Our waiters didn't check in on us, but when we needed them they were very quick to come. I went to this location for a late night snack as they are conviniently open very late compared to many other places in the byward market. As for the service, Our orders were taken pretty fast and arrived shortly after (about 5-10 mins). Everything went smoothly and the waiter was very friendly. I ordered the choco nut waffle which comes with vanilla ice cream, bananas and strawberries and it was delicious. Even though it was definetely not a small portion, the whole thing wasnt too sweet or heavy. The price was ok, maybe a bit expensive. Would definitely come again. read more

The fact is that on an "on day" this Cacao 70 location can really nail you right in the sweet tooth (in a good way) with it's awesome dessert and food selection that ALSO comes with good service. (I said good, not great, and not excellent because I had never had "blow me away" service there). Unfortunately on an off day this location can also have slow, inattentive, and incompetent service. I once asked a staff member there if everything was alright as he looked particularly troubled and to my shock his answer was "no, it's very very busy tonight". Well, being a location right in the heart of Ottawa's Byward Market, this location *needs* to step up in terms of its preparedness for busy times. It was our first visit. We ordered the chocolate+caramel+walnut+alcohol fondue(single portion). It comes with two small plates of fruits, a decent slice of brownie and a few bite-size waffles. The waitress told us that they hadn't received the alcohol license but they can compensate by increasing the portion. So part of the reason that it didn't get 5 stars is because i felt that the chocolate was watered down though the fruits were fresh and the waffles were good. I was also disappointed because there wasn't a candle underneath the chocolate fondue to keep it warm. Came here on a weekend afternoon and there was no lineup. My friends and I ordered the Volcano, Milk Chocolate Milkshake, and the Banana Chocolate Milkshake. Having been to the Montreal Cacao70 several times I did have an expectation walking in. Fortunately, it didn't disappoint! I did find that the Volcano tasted a little different - in a good way. This is a perfect example of a place that is brilliant in idea and abhorrent in execution. Where to begin. I came with friends, looking for a brunch and the theme of chocolate and brunch seemed appealing. But it all went wrong. We arrived and the place was moderately but certainly not bursting-at-the-seam busy. Our waiter took our order for food and for drink. The concept of the luxury chocolate drinks is terrific - exotic chocolate melted and served in brandy glasses with hot chocolate in a side tin that you can pour into the glass melt the chocolate www further into a rich, warm beverage. Except of course it took 40 minutes for the drinks to arrive, and another 30 for the food. Maybe they call it Cacao 70 because that's how long it takes for you to get your food. When the food came it was cold, of course. My friend asked twice for sweetener with her coffee and did not get it eventually we flagged down a bus boy who got it, and frustratingly when she was found finished the drink our waiter finally arrived with the sweetener. The open face chicken breakfast sandwich was not as advertised. It more like an overly mayo-chicken salad on bread. The eggs were on the side. But of course none of that matters because as I mentioned earlier it came late and cold. By the time we got everything we were past the point of being hungry and the food was at that point so unappetizing that we didn't eat it. We basically having consumed nothing but melted chocolate. The shame of it is that the melted chocolate was actually tasty but it took so long to get everything, and the food once arrived was so unappealing - I love the bitter taste of chocolate but hated the bitter taste of this experience. With so many other options in the increasingly impressive food scene, I cannot recommend Cacao 70 to anyone until they fix their operations. read more

I visited to experience and indulgent dessert. I loved being able to roast my own marshmallows and have fun with dipping the fruit, graham crackers and waffles in the chocolate. The vanilla ice cream was a nice touch too. It's tasty and interactive for a fun desert destination. This location is in the Byward Market which can get busy. Service was quick taking our order, bringing drinks and delivering our sharing plate. We had to ask for utensils because our sever forgot to bring skewers. After we we're finished it took quite a while to get some attention for the bill. We still enjoyed it but they may have been understaffed for a Saturday night. read more

First time I try the Cacao 70 chain. I went in the Ottawa restaurant with my girlfriend for a little treat after our dinner. The waiters all seemed a bit confused. One of them handed me a burning hot glass for water- probably not the best/safest idea. We ordered the milk chocolate fondue for two. It came with plenty of fresh-ish fruits and little bites of brownies and waffles. The brownies was honestly disgusting, tasted like flour and oil. The chocolate, on the other hand, was pretty good although it was a bit liquidity. Overall we had a decent experience but I wouldn't go back there. There's other better options in Ottawa that will satisfy your sweet tooth. read more

Went on a Sunday, but have been told that orders take exceedingly long. You don't get served for at least 15 minutes. Asked for water twice and they forgot both times. When we asked for bills, it took her over 30 minutes and when she came she got our bills messed up. As for the food, it was good. Only complaint would be that they use too much whip cream. read more

I order a "classic" and according to there menu the "classic" is a classic fondue but instead i received a "classic chocolate crepe(exactly how its written on the menu) and was argued with that i ordered wrong. Then the two workers were talking a different language and the parts i could understand they were talking about how i made a mistake and kept saying the word classic. They also dont fill there chocolate all the way up in the containers and once i was given my correct order it was rudely thrown on the counter and he walked away. Went here tonight for dessert after dinner with family. The restaurant environment was very noisy and hectic - it felt like a busy fast food restaurant. Stressful and I felt I almost had to yell to talk. Once we were seated, it took us a very long time to get our menus. They were short on menus so we had to share, which meant we took a long time to order because there were 3 menus to look through! I asked for another menu he didn't really want to help. I asked for another and he pretty much said that if I didn't want a French menu that if have to just share. Get some more menus folks, your menus can take a looooong time to go through! You should have enough for each chair in the restaurant! The server came to ask for our orders, and we barely had time to say we weren't ready - he had noticed that and practically run off to attend to another table. We got our desserts at different times. I must say, the actual dessert is incredibly delicious. Great flavours and very decadent! I wish the service were at least mediocre. I would love to go back here for dessert, but as long as the service is bad I'm afraid I won't. It's so disappointing as I was really looking forward to my first experience here :( if you're willing to tough it out through the dodgy service, you will LOVE what you get to drink/eat! The food was good, but the service was horrendous. My fiancée and I ate there at around noon a few days ago...now, I understand that mistakes and mix ups happen. But 45min after ordering we hadn't even received our drinks! During that time no one ever came to ask is us if we had ordered or if we needed anything. We had to ask them about it before they even noticed the oversight. One waitress even promised a 50% but it ended up being closer to 17%. I really love this place and have gone many times. Their desserts are fantastic. I think I've only had one or two things that I didn't like and I've tried almost their whole menu at this point. Unfortunately the restaurant itself is far too small for how busy it gets and not set up well so it's quite loud. The wait usually isn't too long, but the staff are often careless about sitting people and don't make note of who comes in first or even ask before seating people, so people who come in later sometimes get seated first. On that note, the staff are also pretty bad, they're often unfriendly and forgetful/lazy (dirty utensils, forgetting water, not checking on tables for ages, etc.) And they are definitely on the pricey side, I personally feel that most of the menu is worth the price, but I can understand why others wouldn't. read more

Having been to Cacao 70 numerous times in Montreal, I figured it would be a safe bet for a chocolate craving in Ottawa too but sadly I was mistaken. We (group of 4) arrived around 3pm on a Saturday and were seated within a feat minutes (the place was packed to the brim). While waiting to be seated, I noticed that the restaurant space itself looked tired. The kitchen looked sad, the containers of pre-made hot chocolates looked depressing, and the entire vibe of the restaurant felt stuffy and old. Once we were seated, it took a good 10 minutes to get someme menus. We went for two single fondue plates and two hot chocolates as soon as someone came to take our order about 15 minutes later. Again, the food was .... SAD. I have no other words to describe what was brought out to us - it felt deflated. The hot chocolates were not good by any means (tasted like powdered cocoa in water) and the fondue dishes were stingy (small portion of chocolate, small portion of fruit that didn't even look fresh). In addition to the fruit, there was also a small portion of waffles and a brownie. The brownie tasted like it was baked a week prior and was suoer dry - neither one of us went past the first bite of it. To make matters worse, along from the subpar food came basically zero service. Our glasses of water were never filled during our almost 2 hour visit, we were never checked on after they brought us our orders, and it took forever to get anyone's attention to pay so that we could just leave that weird depressing twilight zone and go back out into the world. Overall a pretty negative experience - can't believe the night and day difference between the Montreal and Ottawa branches! Wouldn't recommend unfortunately! read more

Yup, I'm a fan. It's a place full of chocolate. What is not to love? We were served quickly. I ordered the grilled marshmallows, a.k.a. SMORES! Who doesn't love smores? They even bring a flame to your table. Amazing! Also the melted peanut butter was a nice touch. They aren't overpriced either. The place can get a little loud but it isn't too bad. My only complaint is that the server felt like he was rushing us out a bit. He kept trying to take our plates away when we were just taking a break, not finished. Hands down one of the worst brunches that I have had over the past couple of years. Was wondering around in the Market and by bad luck, passed by this place. The restaurant has a cool and hip look from outside, so I thought they should offer nice breakfast as well. So decided to check it out. At entry, noted that there are few empty seats. but not sure what happened that I needed to wait for just short of 5 min to be seated. Menu was nice: omelettes, crepes, frittatas. not the usual breakfast menu. I ordered a frittata with chorizos and a coffee with excitement. It took about 5 minutes for coffee to arrive in the smallest coffee cup that you can imagine for your breakfast. Well, there is always refill, so who cares!! Then waited for another 20 minutes for the food. Now I am super hungry and ready to enjoy....oh, no..... the frittata is essentially only two eggs....where are the rest of ingredients? the chorizo? I really had to search for the 4-5 pea size pieces of chorizo!!! well, probably the taste is great..... but not. absolutely no taste. none! nada!! Well, as I started to try to swallow my egg (and my pride), I asked for another coffee which took 10 min to arrive. and surprise surprise!!! it costs another 2 dollars!!!! This place has so much potential! I have been a regular customer since they first opened in Ottawa in 2014. However they disappoint me each and every time with their terrible service. The menu has delicious options, but the place is always too loud, has a problem with AC/heat depending on the season, and always too loud. We said ok, however it was almost an hour until we got one food item and longer for the full meal. When we got our food it was sub-par at best, and was not presented to be visually-appealing.
