The food was not quite what we expected we got nachos to share they were the best part of the meal however they are more authentic than what we are use to We both ordered a taco expecting it to be small as it is a share item .. neither of us enjoyed them at all I had the grilled chicken one and it tasted very fishy hubby had the grilled beef and could barely chew it as it was very much like a jerky ! ( his words ) I gave my hubby the rest of my chicken one as he is a garbage bin for food and even he didn't like it so it was left 1/2 un eaten Unfortunately this will not be a revisited place for us it just wasn't our flavour !!

Located to offer outdoor diners an ocean view whilst still providing shelter from the elements, El Carbon has service and food to match. Even the indoor dining area is cool and fresh. I have eaten here three times and loved every visit. Great coffee, nice wine and a great variety of food. The place is owner managed and the food is authentic South American using fresh local produce. For example, the fresh oysters were accompanied by an amazing salza and the scallops were fresh not prefrozen . There are great vegetables, seafood and meat dishes.

The ocean views convinced us to be seated at this eatery and we were promptly shown to our table. It was reasonably crowded, but not too loud. Unfortunately we waited a very long time for a waiter to take our order, which they apologised for without our having to complain about it. They offered not to charge us for our first round of drinks as a way to compensate for this, which did offset this rather long wait. We ordered two entrees (garlic bread and the baked Cambert cheese) to share, both of which arrived reasonably soon after ordered and both were really good. I especially liked the Cambert cheese. For our mains, we ordered the Carnivore platter. Unfortunately, we had to wait about 45 minutes for this to be brought to our table. While the steak was really well prepared, the chicken was a let-down and seemed to have been prepared long before the steak. The chorizo sausages were honest and good as was the sweet potato chips. All and all not a bad meal for the price, but the wait time just too long to be excused. The staff was friendly, but I think they were just overwhelmed. I understand that restaurateurs want to limit the staff they employ to maximise profit, but if people don't go back to a venue because they waited too long for their food, this strategy will backfire when the business ultimately closes its doors. On the weekend, I suggest they employ more staff. Next time we will go one of the other restaurants on the Marina strip at Glenelg and see if their service time is better than El Carbon's.

I do feel like some elements were slightly lacking, salt is needed I think to enhance some of the flavours, perhaps they are taking the 'health' concept too far? Lol unlikely but damn I do love me some salt! The salsa is just so fresh and I loved the hint of coriander. No jar stuff here! Being new to the Food Truck Business and in such a busy place the services was a little slow. .. BUT... worth it. The Yucca (cassava) Chips were light and tasty served up with a little pot of salsa that made them even better. Then the burger, chicken pieces cooked in a South American mix of spices and CHOCOLATE served with some crisp lettuce. YUMMM is all I can say. They also usually have a vegetarian option. If you see the colourful truck, do yourself the favour and give them a go.

Personal hang-ups aside, I did try La Chiva at the Adelaide Night Market and I was pleasantly surprised. As is key with food trucks, they give friendly service, and as a nice point of difference they take your name as Señor/Señora ___ when you order, eg Señor Oscar. I ordered the Chivita de Chorizo with a side of Yucas (cassava fries) and I was pleasantly surprised (here I'll mention another hang-up; I don't often like burgers). The flavours worked really well together and no particular ingredient overpowered the others. The freshness of their ingredients is evident in the final product too, which is always nice. They have three menu options (plus the side of Yucas), including a vegetarian and gluten free option. The vegetarian option does have cheese but I'm sure vegans can request it be left out. After my experience I'm less reticent in trying some of the other Americas style food trucks and eateries around Adelaide and I have already recommended La Chiva to friends.

Although this did not hold my attention for the duration of the 1 hour & 45 minute wait before our meals were served. This is my first time eating at this place so i am not sure if this is a usual occurrence and am happy to give it the benefit of the doubt (hence the 3 stars) However i did notice that others were also experiencing long wait times and it was not all that busy. The meals tasted authentic and were enjoyable if not a little underwhelming. Definitely not the best i have had and were rather small in portion sizes than i have come to expect from other Mexican Restuarants. All in all a fine little place but the service and meals did not scrub up to other competitors out there and this really let it down for me. Perhaps this place is not trying to be more than what it is.
