    Prefiterole double portion
    James A.

In the heart of downtown Nice, Café Nice serves up well executed French fare at very reasonable prices for huge portions. French food in the States tend to skew towards elevated dining with expensive ingredients, haute service, and the prices to match. Our plans for dinner on a Friday night fell through, so decided on this café based on them having mussels/fries on the menu. It's a big space, with covered outdoor seating, and two large indoor dining areas. It wasn't too crowded inside at around 7:15, and there was no wait. We were greeted warmly by the maitr'd, and seated to our choice, near a window. We got a complementary basket of crostini and olive tapenade, which was good. A basket of sliced baguettes was provide with our meal and constantly refilled (no butter or olive oil though). They have 3 different fixed price menu, the lowest being decouverte menu , (32,5€) with a choice of app, entrée, and dessert. My wife chose French onion soup, Butcher's choice steak (with potato and vegetable), and dessert of the day (which happened to be Prefiterole). I got my mussels and fries (Moules Marinieres for 18,5€). The soup came first and we shared that, both agreeing that it was very good. It was served warm, had plenty of sliced white onions with soaked bread and plenty of cheese. Then our main meal came. The steak was probably chuck, cut very thinly and served in a portion of 3. It was OK. It came with very heavy potato au gratin, and boiled green beans and carrots. As for my plate, I've never seen so many mussels on a plate in my life...there must have been close to 60 small to medium mussels in my dish...so many that the small ones self selected to the bottom. Many of them were too small to eat...surprised they harvested them so small. It was prepared simply with white wine, sliced onions, and parsley. It came with steak fries, expertly fried...addicting (wondering if they were deep fried in tallow). I asked for sauce, and they soon delivered a trio of ketchup, Dijon mustard, and mayonnaise (will only use mayo as a fry dip when in Europe). It took me a LONG time to eat the mussels, mainly to dig out the meat and make sure I didn't crack my teeth on any broken shells. It was very good, and an absolute bargain for around 20 dollars. I finally finished, at which point, they cleared out the dishes and asked me if I wanted dessert. We tried to tell them we would share the included dessert, but there was a misunderstanding and they gave us a double portion of the prefiterole. It was so good, basically a custard filled cream puff, on top of vanilla gelato, drizzled in chocolate sauce, and dusted with dark cocoa powder. Just wonderful, and the two of us finished it with no problem. It was a leisurely meal, and we paid at the table using a credit card. Tax and gratuity is included in the price, so the only extra was the second helping of dessert (8,5€) that the waiter gave us as a misunderstanding. We told the manager how much we enjoyed our meal, and started back to our hotel, ending a long sightseeing day.

This was one of my favorite meals I had during our time in Nice! Our server was very nice and our food came out quite quickly when we ordered. We chose to sit and have a longer meal and a few drinks which they had no problem with. The outdoor seating area was quite large and comfortable. The food was really fresh and delicious. We did one of the specials to start which was a tomato, truffle, and Burrata dish- which was perfect for a summer dinner. Then we saw that the pastas were quite large so my friend and I ordered one of the Gnocchi with tomato sauce and basil, and split it. It's was absolutely delicious. I honestly wish I could have eaten more of it. The also brought fresh bread and crostini and tapenade to the table. Their drink menu was also quite nice. I stuck with Rose and my friend had a few espresso martinis which she said were very good! It was an incredibly good meal and we ordered two dishes and 6 drinks for less than €95! Highly recommend!

Cafe de Nice was a great option for dinner and was ideal as it was outside of the city center of Nice as well as away from the old section of town where all the tourist restaurants are located. Another benefit was that it wasnt far from my hotel. I had the grilled fish which offered a variety of different fish. It was quite good. Additionally service throughout the meal was attentive and pleasant. I would venture back if I was looking for a solid option for dinner.

The service was bad. The waiter was a brash jerk who felt too hurried and not interested in what we need. HOWEVER, the pesto Gnocchi was FANTASTIC. redeemed the experience! So pillowy and soft and melts in your mouth. Was very tasty and LARGE portion as well. Service - 2/3 Food - HARD 5

The highlight was the local figs, feta and heirloom tomato appetizer. All 3 were amazing, and he covered them in a delicious black-olive olive oil that really came through in a fantastic way. We also got a delicious pesto pasta with homemade pasta and (you guessed it) high end olive oil. This was quite good as well. The owner was extremely kind, the service was fast and pleasant, and he truly looked to enjoy sharing his craft. It's a small homey restaurant on a crowded part of old town, but don't let that scare you away, definitely worth stopping by when you're in Nice!

Pesto spaghetti was cooked perfectly and had a mild flavor. Tiramisu was probably one of the best I have ever had, even better with the olive oil. The olive oil itself was a standout addition. Service- Nadim (owner) was lively and very attentive. A Nice Old Town celebrity chef :) Ambiance- Italian hole in the wall. I would highly recommend this place and I am looking forward to returning. Very small menu and you must make reservations in advance as the place only sits around 10 people. Open for lunch. Euro only.

Make reservations ahead of time (it's easy to do online) because this place will fill up for dinner. They have 4 appetizers to choose from, about 5-6 entrees and about 7-8 desserts to choose from, and the prices are reasonable for dinner: 24€ for plat + entree or plat + dessert, and 29€ for the 3 courses. Entrées: - Velouté de topinambour / Jerusalem artichoke soup - This soup was super, super creamy and buttery. I don't want to know how much cream and/or they put in here - it was good, but very rich. There was a piece or two of bacon, and the soup was tasty. - Trilogie de betteraves / Beets cooked three ways - I was looking for something healthier to eat, and was happy this was on the menu. I wasn't sure what to expect with this dish, other than it was beets cooked three ways. There was one little dish of beet salad with green onions or scallions, a small beet poached or roasted, and a beet purée that went well with the bread. I would recommend this appetizer if you want something on the lighter/healthier side and different. Plats: - Risotto with asparagus and tomatoes - My husband ordered this and it was good but not outstanding. He added the 2 pieces of seared foie gras for 5€ which made the dish better; I think it would have been a bit bland without the foie. The asparagus was very fresh and the risotto was on the lighter side which was nice. - Salmon with Cajun seasoning and leeks - This was different than what you'd normally find in a French restaurant since I've never seen Cajun spiced things before. The salmon was a little on the small side, but it was still good and the caramelized leeks on the side were a really perfect compliment. This dish was tasty and really good, but just a bit on the smaller side compared to all the other main dishes that were meat-based (from what I saw other diners getting) We were full so we skipped dessert, but it looked pretty good - they had things like a chocolate lava cake, a praline crème brûlée, spéculos tiramisu, and financier with a passion fruit center. Overall, a good meal that won't break the bank and that has a good selection of things on the menu. More heavier " comfort food " than lighter fare, and slightly less traditional French. The ambiance was very casual - it almost felt like you were eating in a graffiti park with dim lighting and metal walls, but overall, we had a decent meal at a reasonable price. The waiters here all spoke English well and it seemed most of the clientele were tourists.

We ordered the octopus salad and it was a very generous portion with an incredibly fresh tasting grilled octopus. It was a perfect size to share or you could have it as a light entree. Menu is small but what they do, they do very well. They have both indoor and patio seating. Aside from the tasty food the most memorable thing here was the wonderful service. We were seated right away and had a nice bread bowl with oil and balsamic vinegar to start as well as drink orders placed. This is not the place to order drinks but they do have quite a few non alcoholic drink options -juices, soda, etc. Overall I'd highly recommend checking this place out for lunch or dinner.

I ordered the sole, which was cooked perfectly and tasted wonderful. My friend had what they described as a clam linguini (which was actually more of a spaghetti). I tried some, and we both agreed that the dish came up short because it was missing something - maybe garlic? Despite the lack of favor in my friend's dish, but entrées portions were very generous, and our server recommended a very nice bottle of local red wine which we both very much enjoyed. We also shared a plate of specialty ham, which unfortunately was way too salty for either of us to have more than a few bites. Bottom line: Exceptional service and great prices. We enjoyed our visit enough that we might give them another try the next time we find ourselves in Nice.
