    Chicken Satay

Very small menu, but all of the items sounded great. I tried the chicken satay at was fantastic and unique twist of the Thai dish. Friendly staff and good location.

Love: - the location (next to the Artis) - the outdoor seating - the affable waiters - the redic tasty sandwiches and soups If you walk around the Artis for a couple of hours, head to this spot to relax, drink beers and get your grub on. Trust Louis R.

Bitterballen, a must have! Comes with 2 more balls not pictured because they are in my stomach. Only € 4,70!

Our hotel was a few doors down from this wonderful pub so we eventually found ourselves here for a drink and appetizers before setting out for the night. It's right across from the Artis GVB tram station which is great because you can get connected to pretty much anywhere else in town from there. The vibe inside the restaurant was so relaxing in the early evening. Free wifi, good beer, delicious genever, but here is what you should get: You ready? Ok. Here it is: BITTERBALLEN. Holy shit. It has to be one of the best contributions the Dutch have provided to mankind. It's a meat-based, spherical snack that is served with mustard and the perfect thing to eat while drinking. They come out of the kitchen HOT, so be careful. If you haven't had them before, be sure to try them before you leave the country. We didn't have any of the full blown meals, but we did lurk around and saw good stuff being served. If we had more time, I'm sure we would have returned for a meal. 4 bitterbal-shaped stars!

I guess the thing about this cafe was that it was across the road from the zoo, so before going into Micropia I decided to stop by here and have a drink. Well, unlike other parts of Europe, they don't necessarily have table service here, namely because nobody yelled at me when I ordered my beer at the bar. However, like a lot of places they have some pretty good drops on tap. They also have outdoor seating, which is also pretty cool, but you do seem to find a lot of that in the Netherlands as well (though it could have something to do with the smoking laws). Anyway, it was a nice cafe, nothing flash, but nice.

€8 = Ham anf cheese sandwich, a hot beverage and fresh orange juice
    Kanoe A.

I ordered the ham and cheese sandwich that included orange juice and a "hot beverage" all for €8. But because I ordered a hot tea they had to bill everything separate. I know the server just started but they could atlease honor the price. It's not my fault that tea was not included. Service was okay, the server came to our table 3 time. The sandwich could use a little more meat but other than that. You het what you pay for.

This is the Koosje sandwich on whole grain bread. A toasted sandwich with Brie, tomatoes, leek, and fresh basil.

And despite ALL of our meals in Amsterdam being excellent, this one may have been the best. We wanted to try Dutch food, not totally knowing what to expect and were blown away by the combination of flavors and textures we consumed. We started with the pickled herring which was served with onions and pickles- fresh yet bold! I'm still thinking about those little fishies weeks later. Then we each had the sampler-ish plates (I forget what it was called). Hers was the vegetarian version and mine was with sausage. There were 3 kinds of essentially mashed potatoes with veggies mixed in: 1 with spinach I think, 1 with carrots, and 1 with sauerkraut. Mine came with a delightfully rich gravy and my moms came with some kind of lighter yellow sauce (I think mustard based). We tried these same dishes at other Dutch restaurants during our stay, but nothing beat The Pantry. The service in this quaint and cozy spot was also excellent!

Portions are substantial and a very good value in a neighborhood where tourist-markups are the norm. They have a/c, but in order to feel it you'll need to sit closer to the back of the restaurant/near the kitchen, as there is only one wall unit back there, and they leave the front of the restaurant open to the elements (even in 98+ degree heat).

I found it browsing Yelp, and the name alone told me this was going to be a meat-forward kind of night. Fair warning if you're bringing anyone squeamish about restaurant names: The wife wasn't thrilled about it going in, though the food won her over fast. Getting there was its own small adventure. The place sits down a narrow alley, and our Uber couldn't get us all the way to it, which turned into a bit of a hike. That happened to us more than once in Amsterdam, using the exact address didn't always mean the driver could actually reach the door, so budget a few extra minutes if you're headed here. I normally default to steak, but the menu had a burger topped with pulled pork that promised more meat than a straight cut, and I couldn't pass it up. Delicious. Genuinely one of the best burgers I've had. But the wife's flat iron steak might have stolen the night. Flat iron is one of the most underrated cuts out there, and this kitchen proved it. She was still talking about that steak days after we got home, enough that I ended up buying flat irons from Costco just to chase it. The atmosphere is cool and a little edgy, dim lighting, a lot of character, and yes, some genuinely creepy decor scattered around, including an old doll that stares at you like it's judging your order. It ran loud, but not so loud we couldn't hold a conversation across the table. Service was good, just on European time rather than American time. Getting the check took a while, which threw us off at first, but that's the norm across the EU, not a knock on this place specifically. Pricey, but worth every bit of it. We'd go back without hesitation next time we're in Amsterdam.

It was very warm in the place, so keep that in mind if you're traveling in Amsterdam during a heat dome! We had a couple servers who worked with us nd both were kind and friendly. They didn't quite communicate with each other about our need to split the check a specific way, but it worked out in the end. We enjoyed some cocktails and beer (ranging from 9.50 Euro to 12 Euro), as well as the Pork Belly and Pickles to start off (21.50 Euro for 300 grams). Tasty way to start the meal. The three of us shared our mains and enjoyed what we had. The Favorite Ribs (24.50 Euro) were flavorful; the L'Incroyable 300gr (Ribeye; 34.50 Euro) was good, but our least favorite of what we ordered; the Le Cannibale Royale 170gr (burger) was super tasty. We also enjoyed some frites (4.90 Euro) and some delicious Mac n Cheese (6.50 Euros). Good time and good food!

We sat on the patio. Our server brought us complementary bread with butter while we read through the menu. I'm told my meal was authentic Dutch food, but it just seemed like a strange combination. The name slipped my mind, but it was a pile of mashed potatoes with endive, with a meatball on top with brown gravy and then beside that with some type of smoked sausage with a pile of mustard. I've always felt that whatever food you put on a plate should taste good together sausage with the mustard with the meat and the gravy and the mashed potatoes just seem disjointed to me. With that sad, I ate every drop of it and enjoyed it so maybe I learned something from this meal. ‍ My son took the alternative approach and ordered a meal with Indonesian flavors; chicken with peanut sauce was the main entrée and it came with french fries. He definitely enjoyed his meal as well. I'm glad we gave VS a try. It turned out to be a good meal of Dutch food in a touristy area with food from all over the world. I guess I'm old-fashioned because I just wanted a taste of the local cuisine. Cheers!
