On a whim, my wife and I made a reservation at the newly reopened Cafe Stella in Silver Lake, eager to see what it had to offer. We went early, 5:30, and so we were given our choice of seating by a very polite and engaging young hostess, my wife and I opting for a very comfortable and cozy booth in the bar which had the feel of a small salon, the walls covered with posters and art reminiscent of Paris and France. There were also photos and posters of Jefferson Airplane direct from the Summer of Love. Groovy! Remember what the doormouse said! Feed your head... We were not just waited on, but genuinely hosted by A.J., the bar being her warm and wonderful domain. The wait staff, all very friendly and polite. Our pre fixe meal of a super delicious steak, pommes frites, salad and chocolate mousse was simple and simply fantastic! However, A.J. literally took our experience to another level with her attentiveness, kindness and sincere joy in things that others might consider ordinary, like taking the time to help us pick a scotch, and what a great shot of whisky it was! Sweet Lorraine and I so thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. For a few wonderful hours in the bar, it felt like we had escaped back to a small cafe in Paris (with a Los Angeles accent). I'm so happy to see Cafe Stella re-open. We went last night and were surprised that there was only one food option, a set prix fixe menu that they run on mon and tues. So salad, steak and mousse was our order. Odd but fine. The salad was tiny and underdressed but I actually didn't mind it. The steak however was awful. I had to hunt around to find any tiny single bites that didn't have solid chunks of fat or something gross going on in the meat. The cut just wasn't good. The fries were passable but lackluster. The mousse was excellent. We went to Bar Stella afterwards and the service was very slow and very unfriendly, bordering on rude. I'm really rooting for this place to thrive. I'd take down this review if it got better but right now they have some improvements to make. 3 stars for that dinner is me being a bit generous as it is. read more

I used to live near Café Stella years ago and loved it. While it was expensive, the food was always great. Came back last night after the re-opening and saw the prices had gone up even more ($25 appetizers, $40-80 mains). Not surprising, given inflation. But what did surprise me was the lackluster flavors and portions. We got the onion soup, leeks, oysters, burger, spaghetti, steak, and mussels. The only dish that was properly salted and sized was the mussels ("moules frites"). Our waiter was very nice, but the service was quite slow. Took us half an hour to wave him down for the check. Probably the biggest con: there's no valet or lot, so parking is a STRUGGLE on a Saturday. Not sure I'll return to Cafe Stella. That said, Bar Stella - connected and directly next door - did seem like fun. I could see us having cocktails there, if we get lucky with parking. read more

And there's a cute little patio. Very grammable. A good place for small groups or a cocktail date. Cocktails were delicious. Can definitely recommend the Sofia. Cocktails were $18 so a bit on the pricier side. Service was good. Friendly bartenders. There's street meter parking but you'll probably have to walk a block or two. read more

Dinner tonight was my first time visiting here and I regret that I have not been here sooner. I had a really nice experience and aside from a few hiccups it was a really good dinner with a great vibe. Just to start I really like the design, almost an outdoor inside type of feeling. I especially like the lighting since it's very low and resembles candlelight. The live jazz was perhaps the true icing on the cake in terms of what made it an enjoyable setting. The music was not too loud that we could not hear each other talking but loud enough that it drowned out the tables around us. I will admit service was pretty slow at the beginning and we had to wait awhile to get our check after we finished but I don't blame the server at all she was very polite and everyone we saw was working hard I just think they were short staffed tonight. I started off with the beet salad with blue cheese and it was very tasty. Very light and refreshing and was a great start. For my entree I chose the Dover Sole and it was delicious; I finished every bit of it. Overall I would recommend to anyone, especially if you're a fan of bistro style French cuisine. I would say it's a casual setting so it would be ideal for a date or a dinner with friends. Parking can be a pain in the area however they do provide valet. My bf has been mentioning this restaurant to me since the day we started dating 2 years ago, and we were finally able to try it out. I'm giving 4 stars for the food & service, but the atmosphere was not my cup of my tea. ATMOSPHERE 3/5: This French restaurant is located in the heart of SilverLake, surrounding many other lively restaurants and bars. The entrance to the restaurant was sort of hard to find, we ended up walking throughout the entire place, and then finding the hostess table (it was confusing, the name of the restaurant is on the opposite side of the building of where the hostess table is). They provide both outdoor patio (covered with heaters) & inside seating. They are requiring a vaccine card if you want to sit inside, but the staff last night was not even wearing a mask, so that was an interesting request. The outdoor patio is not truly outdoors, it is covered, heaters are a plus, but I just think the covid rules don't make sense if your staff isn't even following them. We chose the outside patio, I requested to sit nearby a heater, we were sat nowhere near a heater. There was a large plant in the corner that was resting on our heads the entire time, the table area was cramped and small, and people kept bumping into my chair and knocking down my purse. Needless to say, our romantic date was not so romantic. The atmosphere is also very loud. If you plan on coming here for a "date" or intimate gathering, it's not ideal because you'll be saying "huh" a hundred times until you hear what the person said. The bar area was really tiny and cramped as well, again the covid rules for inside are pointless if you're sitting nose to nose with over capacity of patrons. SERVICE 4/5: In the beginning of sitting down, we were approached by 3 different waiters, and asked the same thing, I don't think we had an assigned server yet. We got our waters for the table, and then our real server Maryna, was able to get the rest of our orders. She was truly a gem, she apologized for not getting to us sooner and even offered to give us wine on the house. Maryna was very attentive to us, and she did not miss a beat! If it wasn't for her, I would have left before we even got comfortable. FOOD 5/5: The only thing I truly enjoyed about Cafe Stella was the food. We ordered bread & butter for the table - it's not complimentary, and the butter was practically frozen.. it wouldn't spread or cut with our butter knives. Then, we started off by ordering 2 dozen West Coast Oysters (5/5) (we are big fans; I don't have a picture because we inhaled it). Next, we ordered the Fromage Maison accompanied with the Jambon de Bayonne (5/5) - The assortment of the chefs choice cheeses were absolutely delicious, there was a good amount of both dry & creamy type of cheese. I also thoroughly enjoyed the sweetness of the dried fruit accompaniments. The French ham was also a great choice to pair with the cheese board, truly recommend it. I just wish we knew both plates came with bread, we must have missed it, we were already full even before our entrées came to the table. Next, we ordered the Beef Tartare (4/5) - Can't go wrong with a beef tartare, especially enjoyed the quail egg, but the aioli sauce was a tad bit sour for me, it was making my tongue feel odd. Lastly, our mains were the Steak Frites (5/5) & the Beef Bourguignon (5/5) - both cooked to perfection, we were able to box them up to go, because we were already full up to our necks. Overall, I would not return. Although the service & food were great, the atmosphere was not to my liking. Parking is scarce in Silverlake, I don't know if they have valet, but we decided to Uber. The food is overpriced for what it is but we are willing to pay for the ambiance and live music. Came on a week night. It took 10-15 minutes for our server to acknowledge us. Fine, it's COVID times, we understand. When she arrived, she didn't apologize for the wait.. fine, busy night. We gave her our drink and food orders since we weren't sure when we'd see her again. Food arrived before the drinks. She explained that drinks come from the bar and it's busy in there.. fine once more. I live right up the street and came in for the umpteenth time tonight... Ordered a drink at the bar and had to take a phone call. I left my sunglasses by my beer to signify that there's a human here (thought the place might be safe, my mistake) , and came back after a short phone call to find my beer was moved and my sunglasses were GONE. I asked the bartender and he said "here's your beer but there were no sunglasses"... calling a customer that has been robbed a lier is NOT the thing to do. Being robbed SUCKS but being called wrong afterward stings SO much worse. I have heard really negative things about the clientele as of late and it was confirmed tonight. Please treat customers like the valuable asset they are to your establishment. Not like they don't know what they're talking about or are wrong for bringing up the fact that they have been stolen from by shady customers. My nine dollar beer cost me $230 tonight because I paid nine dollars, tipped one dollar (even though this happened...), and my sunglasses are worth $220. Yay! read more

The vibe here is great! Love the music and comfy couches to sit on. The drinks were absolutely not drinkable and expensive! Started with a French 77. It was more tart than I expected and had very little Elderflower taste. Decided to get a Negroni next. Even worst then the first drink. My fiancé ordered a hot toddy and thought he'd rather be sober! Most of our crew complained the drinks were not good. The space is small, a little difficult to get an order in but the bartenders are friendly! Wow Cafe Stella! We had an unexpected date night here after leaving the Black Cat. It smelled so good that the scent lured us in. Kinda like Pepe Le Pew when he smells his girl skunks aroma. Except this was Cafe Stella smells for us. The ambiance is dope here, we opted to sit at the patio and the lighting was perfect and it had a very romantic atmosphere to it. Didn't want to think at all so we had our server, Alexander, suggest everything and make the decisions for us. Oh boyyy, did he do an awesome job!!! We got some mussels, the halibut, and a burrata. Everything was cooked to perfection and tasted great. The soup the mussels were cooked in tasted excellent. Scooped that soup with the mussels shell and slurped it. The halibut, which I was hesitant on getting, did not taste fishy at all and had an awesome sauce too! They nailed seafood here which isn't an easy thing to do. Burrata was fresh and came with tomatoes and a fried polenta cake. Just yum yum yum!!! Everything was so flavorful, I don't think we stopped for one second to take a breath. Just kept shoving food into our mouths til it was all gone. We were told that we were the speediest eaters ever to come to the restaurant! In and out within 25 min. But that's how we do. Food is pricey here, we decided to splurge ... Three plates, one glass of Chardonnay...$102. Then add tip. But hey sometimes you just do it because you're worth it!!! Thanks Cafe Stella! Came while visiting a friend in LA that raved about the bread and butter. YUP THE BREAD AND BUTTER. The last place I visited before COVID hit was France and let me tell you all I remembered about the trip was the butter. When she told me she never had bread and butter like this I was like... TAKE ME THERE Baguette & butter - The baguette light and airy crispy... the BUTTERRRR was everything. We ordered 2. My friend tried to ask to see where she can get the butter from apparently it is ordered from France. Frisee aux Lardons - Salad with a soft poached egg and bacon. REALLY good big chunks of bacon. Steak Frites - Standard steak frites. and a couple glasses of Rose and sparkling wine ;) Our waitress was really kind and made the experience even better. When we first got to the restaurant we were a bit confused the sign at the entrance told us to wait there to be seating but the hostess station is actually further inside the area. We came here last night (05/10: 8:30pm) for the second time and I think it's safe to say that Cafe Stella is hands down my favorite restaurant in LA. It's such a beautifully decorated place, great lighting and music- perfect for a date- we came for our anniversary. The ambience is wonderful, as is the food- I had the steak and gratin potatoes and my boyfriend had the burger- both were amazing, we shared the escargot too. Our waiter was super attentive and very nice, very patient while we took ages to choose from the menu - as was the host- I didn't catch either of their names sorry! But the host had pink hair and was so lovely and really took care of us- both are a total asset to Cafe Stella Only criticism was the bartender who had a total attitude from the second we sat at the bar while we waited for the table- so unfriendly- we were both totally confused as to why he treated us with such disdain. I wondered if he was just having a rough night but he was pretty nice to the guy sat next to us so not really sure what we did but it wasn't the best introduction to the evening... He left the bar for a while and I waited ages for him to come back so I could pay the tab and go sit at our table, he eventually came back and then went on his phone with his back turned to the bar so I couldn't get his attention from where I was, my boyfriend went over closer to where he was and asked for the check and again the bartender just responded like we were a total inconvenience, literally picked up his phone again before giving him the check... I'm still so confused as to what his problem was... I'm still giving Cafe Stella 5 stars because I don't believe that one arrogant team member is representative of a beautiful restaurant with otherwise lovely staff and amazing food- we will definitely be coming back read more

I dined at Cafe Stella a few weeks ago and accidentally left behind an expensive piece of art. Since I live in San Francisco and my flight was early the next morning, I was panicked to say the least. After several calling several times, the manager finally picked up and assured me that he would ship the art to me. I also promised to reimburse him for any costs incurred. I have now followed up with him several times and rather than just tell me he was going to keep my art and never send it, he has chosen to stop responding. Our first impression was that it would be packed, but it was rather empty? either that in mind, service was kind of slow and it took about 10 mins for them to come and ask us what we wanted to drink. Only other "annoying" thing was parking! Would definitely suggest walking if you're nearby or ubering. Other than that, the food was great! Recently went on a first date at Cafe Stella! Such incredible ambiance, great food and drinks! The service was also fantastic! However, I want to bring to the management's attention that the restaurant is not in compliance with California Assembly Bill No. 1732: AB 1732 requires single-occupancy restrooms in California businesses, government buildings, and places of public accommodation to be universally accessible to all genders by March 1, 2017. Cafe Stella has two single stall bathrooms that are marked "women" and "men." It was particularly disappointing and shocking given that Café Stella is in the heart of Silverlake, which is known to be a safe part of town for queers. This law is so incredibly important because it cuts down on the fear and harassment trans/non-binary folks face every day. It's also so easy to fix! Cafe Stella, alll you have to do is change the signs! The signs must be changed to "Restroom" or "Gender-Neutral Bathroom" to comply with the current law. My meal the other night would have paid for the signage! Thank you for listening! I don't think I've ever seen a Yelp review be so wrong. Based on the reviews this place would appear to be a subpar restaurant for unsuspecting tourist. Instead it's an absolutely lovely restaurant with incredible food and great drinks. My wife and I (and our five year old daughter) had planned on going to another restaurant, but when we discovered it didn't have indoor seating we decided to take a chance on Cafe Stella and I'm glad we did. The ambiance at the restaurant was dreamy. The candle lit patio and jazz band made for a very relaxing evening. Had I stumbled into this restaurant on a side street in Paris I would have been quite happy. The food was excellent. We had the fennel salad, the braised short rib and the salmon. Everything was flavorful, cooked perfectly and high quality. We are already looking forward to our next meal there. As we were leaving my wife said if money was no object she'd have a standing reservation at Cafe Stella. The only possible drawback could potentially be the prices for the entrées, but in our opinion it was worth every penny for the lovely evening. read more

There was one bartender so it took us for a long time to get our drinks, but he forgot to bring my drink, I told him 3 times tho. The staff also forgot to make our seats, so we basically spend at the bar for 30 min. When we finally got the table, the server was friendly and nice. Cafe Stella is far and away the best French restaurant In Los Angeles. The food is amazing, the staff is wonderful and welcoming and the ambiance is top notch. We have tried the Au Poivre is amazing, the Frisée Salad is the best I've ever had, and the French onion soup is so amazing. The wine selection is wonderful and delicious and the drinks are so tasty. A truly awful meal. Cold frites, tasteless steak, poorly prepared escargot--an insult to french cuisine. It's likely the majority of their patrons don't know any better and are happy to pay inflated costs for sub-par meals. Our server was pleasant, a gentleman who mentioned he was Israeli, and we stressed our dissatisfaction with the food was nothing to do with his service. The service overall could have been more attentive, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt while this whole COVID nonsense continues. No responses from other servers when we complained about the food, just awkward silences. Perhaps training on how to deal with dissatisfied customers might be necessary? Overall, a very poor meal. When spending $600 for three people, I'd expect much better. If you're looking for excellent french cuisine in LA, check out Tesse on the Strip, or Entre Nous in Pasadena. A meal to remember, not for innovation, interpretation, or even uniqueness, but for genuine, French execution of simple, clear flavors and techniques. How refreshing to order something and get the very best version of that dish. Not a modernized version, just the best version. The place itself is just darling, like a true French bistro tucked away in a quiet neighborhood. But in SilverLake right off Sunset. Service was efficient, yet warm. Well I'll start with my food had a long black hair in it. Now the ambience was great we sat on the little patio breezeway and enjoyed the cool breeze on a Sunday morning. Service was fast and everyone was super nice. We ordered drinks...wait no we didn't because the bar didn't open until 11:00am. Beer and wine are okay but you can't have a bloody Mary, greyhound, or screwdriver with your brunch. We ordered the avocado toast to share and it was amazing! Actually I think the avocado toast was the best thing I had. I ordered the chorizo and eggs and it was awesome after they remade it, remember the hair! My wife had the baked eggs, it was okay not great but not bad either. Others ordered the lemon pancakes and I cannot remember the others meal. Overall it was good but 3 stars due to the hair and no compensation, and the bar not being open for brunch! read more
