I guess this place used to be a coffee house, but it's now a charming restaurant/wine bar that's about to celebrate its 3rd anniversary. They don't have a website, if Googled you'll get forwarded to their Instagram page which has links for reservations (Open Table) and their wine club. They're on the LA Times Top 101 Restaurants list, which is how I found out about them. I found photos of the menu on a Yelper's post. I actually cancelled a reservation at highly lauded Providence to try Stir Crazy (I've been to Providence). They're only open Monday to Friday. Located on Melrose a few blocks west of Highland (the corner where Nancy Silverton holds court with her 3 restaurants), Stir Crazy is a cozy spot with 9 tables inside, 3 on the entrance patio and 2 on the sidewalk. The only signage is on the glass door. There are clearly a lot of regular customers! I was maybe the only newbie. The menu has footnotes noting where certain ingredients are sourced from. Here's what I ordered: 1) Leek toast. The LA TImes raved about it, and it was delish. Thick toast topped with chevre, soft leeks and kombu oil. 2) Kohlrabi and spinach salad with apple, walnuts and gouda. Fine, but the vinaigrette was a bit too acidic for me. 3) Poached chicken in green garlic butter with turnips and peas. Simple but fresh and delish. Reminded me of the Chinese or Hainan poached chicken we have in Chinese restaurants, but with the volume turned up a bit. 4) Ice cream sandwich. Another winner. The sandwich cookie is a bread and butter cookie made from the bread they serve with their bread service, so the cookie is not too sweet. Since this is also a wine bar, I did order a glass of wine, even though I rarely partake, so I cannot speak much about it. Their list of bottles seems pretty vast; they store some in the restroom. Overall a very enjoyable neighbourhood spot I'll gladly return to when in the area. read more

A small cafe/ wine bar located on Melrose. When I first learned of this place, it was referred to as a wine bar, but that would be a little misleading as they have a solid menu that is as big as other small restaurants I've been to. There is a pretty extensive wine selection, but I'm just saying - don't sleep on the creative, delicious dishes they offer here. The service is great here with a warm sense of hospitality and overall friendliness. There's no distinct signage (that I saw) at the location on Melrose so I had to double check I was in the right place when I walked in. I was able to get seated within minutes since it was on a weeknight. I ordered the leek toast, ricotta gnudi, and a glass of their own pinot noir from the 'Stir Crazy' estate to wash it down. Without going too much into detail, my meal was just delightful. Everything was delicious with high-quality ingredients. The pricing is such that you can probably go on some casual dinners in the middle of the week especially with groups of two to four. I feel like they update their menu or make tweaks to it at least quite often based on the season. Definitely looking forward to coming back and try more items on the menu with the larger group. read more

Once a month we try a different wine bar in the LA area. Decided to try this place. I'd love to give it 5 stars but I just can't. I have never felt so unwelcomed in a restaurant before. The prices are way too high for what you get. The wine bottle list is extensive and look the food was great! They kept taking all our menus and we wanted to just chill with some wine and order as we go along. One of the servers said you can keep ONE menu. Not one server smiled the whole evening. Pricey, but some solid dishes like leek toast, onion dip, rockfish carpaccio. Poached chicken was egregiously expensive and not that great. Yummy desserts. Chill nice staff. Tables on sidewalk are a little too close to the action of the street. They should probably limit it to the confines of the immediate outside area. Restricted residential parking after 6pm, but can find some free meter street parking or go off Melrose two blocks down. read more

Went to Stir Crazy last night and had an amazing meal. I've been to a lot of the "best" restaurants in LA and Stir Crazy did not disappoint. The atmosphere is intimate and inviting. The meal was 10/10 perfection. Standouts were the leek toast and the cod was the best I've ever had. The chicken was cooked perfectly and insanely delicious with green garlic sauce yum! A super cool, charming "hole-in-the-wall" on Melrose. Food was delightful well executed exotic yet home-cookingish fare (scallops, big eye tuna, pork, black cod, fantastic bread and butter). The staff was attentive and pleasant (you could sense that, as you treated them - they treated you - so try: "please & thank you").... What's more the guests were a pleasant range of boomers through millennials; moms through married gay couples- just plain nice to be around. Place does not have a full bar; wine and beer only) The stemware was simple. Only improvement comment: the table bus- staff should ask if you are done before clearing plates (we were lapping up the wonderful sauces, with the terrific bread left, on the plate after we completed the course at hand - and the bus-person tried to clear it from under us - but that is an easy fix. As this place gets everything dialed in, I can it only see it getting better. As long as they don't get snooty (that SO rarely happens in LA...... :) ). read more

Went on a Friday and it was decently busy. The food portions are small but very well made! I almost forgot it was actually a wine bar. They used to just be a coffee shop but upgraded into this really cool dinner spot that feels like a secret locals spot. Will definitely be back even though the end bill was higher than expected. read more

My family loved the ambience and the homey feel while enjoying elevated fresh ingredients and proteins. The dishes were inventive and very tasty.. Among our favorites were our the pork collar and we loved the roasted cabbage. But overall, every dish stood on its own. I had a really disappointing experience here. When I asked the waiter for a recommendation between two dishes, he was incredibly rude and condescending. The food was so bad it was shocking... we ordered 5 things which were all recommended by the server and they were ALL bad...... which I feel like never happens. Idk how this place has so much buzz. Me and my wife went to this restaurant last night. The food was amazing. The first and second round of service was also really great, but sadly the third person that took care of our table, a tall gentleman that was wearing like a baseball hat, ruined my experience he was oddly aggressive with my wife about what drink orders we were ordering, and made her uncomfortable to the point she was tripping over her words to say what the drink was, and after that felt I felt felt like we were supposed to leave and that we were holding up the restaurant, like they were trying to close. I feel like I can complain cuz I worked 20+ years in the service industry in New Orleans, I don't know if I'll go back that guy was horrible. read more
