Back in Anchorage for a visit and had Sunday breakfast/brunch at Cafe Amsterdam. Great service from the owner and her son. I had the veggie omelette. Fresh peapods, so crunchy, paired well with the more usual mushrooms, tomatoes and avocado. Not fancy, but reliable and delicious. read more

Went here once, and actually wouldn't mind going back, but there are so many places I haven't been yet. The food was the better half of ok, and lots of beer on tap, but as a warning, sodas are NOT free refill. That's bad for me as I will drink a couple with a meal while relaxing. read more

Nice slice of Americana. There is a very odd assortment of brunch places in Anchorage and this is one is good (and not overly strange). The place is decorated very old school, do-dads and nick-nacks everywhere. They have a more German vibe then a Dutch one despite the name. The Salmon Benedict was a typical diner showing. No too greasy, everything was edible, but nothing stood out. Waitstaff was fairly attentive, which for Anchorage is a blessing worthy of at least three stars. read more

I wish they hadn't stopped serving dinner. The best Reuben you will find in Alaska and the German potato salad is without competition. Beer prices are a bit outrageous but they do carry quality beer so it's kindof hard to argue, although the same beers are found in other restaurants at less expensive prices. We found this place through yelp and liked it so much the first day we were in Anchorage that we came back for breakfast day 2. Good eggs, sausage, Bavarian cake ( you better be hungry!) and smoked salmon. Homemade jam! Good service in a clean bright atmosphere. read more

Came for breakfast to try it out after hearing some good things about their pancakes. It was a very short wait and was immediately served. Probably due to the fact it's a Friday morning at 10am. But I'd recommend anyone to order the pancakes although if you go for anything more I can't guarantee the price will make the portion. The taste of my Eggs Benedict seemed as boring as the dinning room decor (luckily hot sauce gave me something to look forward to). Overall I'd give this experience a 3/5 for average food but outstanding beer selection. read more

Bavarian Apple Pancake!!! Been living near Seattle for the past 5 years. Love it here, and miss Alaska, too. One thing I've learned about Anchorage is it's pretty easy to know about the yummy cafes and happenings to catch. Not to complain, but down here there's so much stuff- it's really hard to filter through it all. In FIVE years time, I have not found a match to the amazing Apple Bavarian Pancake at Cafe Amsterdam in Anchorage, Alaska down here! Seattle area has tons of cafes and culture, but that really says something about the yummies in Anchorage. We have friends in Portland area, and we all complain about how much we miss the Bear's Tooth food and movies... They have some conceptual spots like that here, but it does NOT compare. I have been here three times and the food seemed a little hit or miss. This time I decided to try a breakfast item and got the spinach florentine Benedict, it was delicious. The avocado. Spinach and tomato went nicely with the perfectly poached eggs and the sauce was light and flavorful. The cottage potatoes were yummy too, browned on all sides, crispy and not too greasy, I will be back for this dish. I have found the soups to be very good and my husband raves about the Amsterdammer sandwich he gets every time. read more

Stopped in today, St. Patty's day to pick up some Corned beef and Cabbage for dinner. I knew I wasn't going out, and didn't want to cook, and I LOVE CB&C. It was about 1:30 pm and their lunch rush was over. There were maybe 5-6 tables occupied. They just didn't seem that busy. I first asked the bartender / order taker, if there was any way they could line my C/O container with foil, since I wasn't eating it for hours. "No". No explanation, just no. I then waited almost 25 minutes. C'mon, it is corned beef! Takes 3-4 hours to cook, so slice and package? Maybe they cooked the potatoes and carrots to order. Could be he case, as the potatoes were crunchy, and the carrots weren't pealed. The pealing was sliding off the carrot. The corned beef was so tough, well, were I not so hungry by the time I wanted my dinner, I would have tossed it. And no, I didn't reheat it in the microwave. 15 years in Anchorage and this was my very first visit to Cafe Amsterdam. I won't go back. Too many good places to waste my money on not so good. read more

One of the best beer selections in Anchorage with a staff that knows their stuff. You know when you regularly find yourself sitting at the bar next to the brewmasters of some of the best breweries in town, you are in the right place. Can't comment of the food as we have never had more than a cheese plate and desert but look forward to trying the food soon. read more

I've been here a few times and I cannot complain about the food or the service. I've had above average food each time I have been. What I do not understand is the price structure. $10.50 for two eggs, potatoes, and toast, and a side of meat is $7.00?! It's not that I won't ever come back, but it will be a while as there are far greater values for breakfast and lunch. I have been a fan of Cafe Amsterdam for about 10 years. The Thai Chicken Croissant, Bavarian Apple Cake and Benedict Mollusca (the only things I order) are delicious and the service is great, though a bit slow. Since I don't go very often (maye about 3 times per year), the prices haven't bothered me much. Recently, though, I met a couple of friends and their daughters there for lunch. I was upset that my friend (who is Gluten and Dairy free, so couldn't order most things on the menu) had a $50 bill for the following: a goat cheese and olive platter ($15) had coffee ($2.50 for DRIP!) and a breakfast plate (2 eggs, ham and potatoes, for $12) and her daughter had a sandwich ($14). PLUS a 15% gratuity since there were 6 of us. Sigh. I have been raving about this restaurant for years and she wasn't impressed. Understood, in light of her diet, and I wouldn't have even considered that if it hadn't been for the following: Before my friends arrived, the host seated me. It was a fairly empty dining room: me, a couple to my left and 2 ladies near the wall. While i was waiting, I heard raised voices. when I looked up from the menu, I realized that ALL of the staff were now in the dining room. Even the kitchen staff. Everyone was keeping their voices low and not yelling except one lady. I figured this lady was having a bad day and someone needed to reign her in and make her go to the kitchen or something. This went on for several minutes, with the lady pretty much losing her mind on the rest of the staff. Very unprofessional. I was embarrassed for her. The other customers were just as uncomfortable as I was. Just about the time I started to get out of my chair and tell them that this had to cease, the whole thing just stopped. At that point, i SHOULD have texted my friends and told them to meet me elsewhere, but I didn't. I will forever regret that. Instead, I chatted with my friends. As they arrived, I kept wishing that someone would at least offer us water or coffee or take an appetizer order from us. After several minutes, I had to wave down a staff member just to get some water on the table. I realize that he thought we were waiting on people, but I really wish that he had asked us what we would like to do. During our meal, I asked the staff to see a manager. That never happened. At the end of the meal, when we were paying our bill, I asked again to see a Manager. A very nice young lady, who has been my server before, came over. I said: "Oh, I didn't realize that you were the manager - i would have simply asked for you". She said (sincerely, and with a smile): "I'm the closest thing to a manager you're going to get". I told her what I had witnessed and said that the owner needed to have a talk with that lady who caused all of the commotion. I was actually not surprised when this "manager" said that the woman who caused all of the fuss IS the owner. I told her that I would be willing to speak with the owner. She said "Well, I will tell her that", but from the look on her face, I gathered that there was no way the owner was going to come speak with me. If she had, I doubt it would have gone well. If she was that way in front of cutomers in the Dining Room, what would she have been like one-on-one? Not that I couldn't have handled it, but I'm pretty sure I would have gotten no satisfaction. When I told the "manager" that I hope this kind of thing was an isolated incident, her face fell and I knew the truth. Sad. Here's the thing, folks. Since that day less than a week ago, I have told many people my story. SIX of those people had stories of their own, OR they, or someone they knew, had worked there and quit because of this business owner. That is ABSURD. I am no longer a fan of Cafe Amsterdam. I'd like for other people with similar situations to come forward. This is a small town. Reputation is EVERYTHING. There are far too many good restaurants with excellent leadership, who treat their employees well, for us to frequent this one and encourage poor treatment. This isn't a Third World country, where this is the norm (though it shouldn't happen anywhere). And we vote EVERY day with our dollars. Do NOT go to this restaurant. The owner needs to get a grip. These people aren't making enough money to take this kind of abuse. Why should SHE profit? read more

Been here a few times... The croissant Beatrix is delicious... The customer service blows!!! Only had a 10-15 min wait which was fine. The problem was we had to wait 50 minutes after being seated to get our food. We arrived at 10:50am and was seated by 11-11:05 we ordered our food. We did not get our our food served to us until 11:52 I also don't like the price. It was 40.00 for two people to eat breakfast and I had coffee! The owner is constantly criticizing her employees in front of the customers and she seems to be rather unpleasant all the way around. I don't think I will go back nor recommend them to anyone. Maybe I caught the owner on a bad day? My friend and I had limited time but I wanted to stop by and try the cafe for lunch. My friend had already brought a packed lunch to eat because of our limited schedule but wanted to join me and she was going to order a drink. When the waiter approached our table my friend asked him if it was ok if she ate her salad while I ate my lunch and that she was planning on ordering a drink he said that was fine. When the owner brought out our drinks she looked at my friend and said something to the effect of "oh really, you think that's ok? And pointed to her salad" (which my friend still hadn't even opened). My friend proceeded to explain she had asked the waiter if that was ok and he had said yes. Then the owner said "well you must have a very serious medical reason for that, like cancer and that waiter you asked is my son and he has children he's trying to feed" and she continued on berating us. My friend and I were so completely shocked I immediately said, "alright please cancel our order we are leaving" and she said "yep" and grabbed our drinks and marched away. Really? My friend was prepared to put her salad away had they said they didn't appreciate that, or anything other than the personal attack that lady gave us.
