This is still my favorite breakfast place. The best coffe in Anchorage. Love the owner who remembered me after a two year absence (moved to the lower 48). I always have the Belgian waffles with berries and whipped cream. They are light and fluffy. Boyfriend had an omelette and he said it was one of the best he ever had. Just had lunch a Mexican chicken salad. They used a ready made salad mix , kraft graded cheddar cheese a 2 oz serving of chicken breast. No taste no spice. The dressing was supposed to be ranch it tasted like a Greek dressing had them bring thousand island it tasted just like the ranch. They used the same basic mix & a strange seasoning but it was red in color. My husband had soup & salad. Terrible we both left hungry went to harvest bread to get some good food. What was really bad was the waitress I feel sorry for her she wore a black shirt to small & her midriff was exposed (she is over weight). At least 3 inches hanging out. The bathroom is unisex the toilet seat was up & had not been flushed disgusting. read more

One star for friendly host service and one star for the cute decor like the Dutch shoes hanging from the wall lamps. I also liked that we were given the option of dining in a smaller private area by the windows or with the bigger dining room. However, the rest of the experience was a total meh. I ordered the veggie omelet and asked the waitress to add some chicken in it (I know it sounds weird but I liked the fillings that came in the veggie one) and she said sure! When I asked if I could get a side of french toast she emphatically said "NO" in a bit of a smug attitude and just stared at me without saying anything else. Was a little awkward. When my food arrived, it was super mediocre--omelet was bland (I make better ones at home), the home fries were actually just not good, and the sourdough toast was just low quality. I was asked if I wanted ketchup and jam and I said yes to both. However, waitress forgot and I had to wave her down and she didn't acknowledge that she forgot and I was waiting for her, my food cooling down every second. My friend ordered the belgian waffle and also said it was meh. Disappointing when I really wanted to like this place as I love European breakfast foods. Perhaps it's best to stick to what they're known for and get the benedicts and the apple cake or french toast? Also, this place is pricey for a very mediocre to bad meal--for the my omelet with added chicken and a hot tea, I paid $25!! Wouldn't recommend if you have other choices. Wow. I only wanted egg, bacon, and potatoes. The bacon wasn't done enough for my taste, so I sent it back. They microwaved it. WHAT?!?! That's a crime! When the bill came, there was $1 more than expected. Asked what that was, the server said it was the English muffin. I love the beer selection here and the food is 'decent' but with a side salad that comes with one cherry tomato and one slice of cucumber and a closing time of 3 during the week and 2pm on the weekends it's not my go-to spot. If Your looking for brunch and one beer this is a great spot, but if you want a work lunch there are better places near by. I have given this place so many chances- mainly because it's been here so long. Their service is good for the amount of people that come through, but it's not professional. The hosts, servers, and chefs are all wearing jeans and t-shirts. I've had nearly everything on the food menu and none of it is inspiring anymore. Every once in a while they will have an interesting special, but the prices for the meals don't match up with the taste. Everything has a very distinctive diner-taste to their dishes. It was described to have some form of special kraut....it was no different then any kraut you'd find. Most notably there was very little kraut on the sandwich :-( there was however an enormous amount of cheese...too much cheese. I haven't had breakfast there yet (sounds pretty delicious), but I'm of the mind that the quality of the dinners offered aren't quite worth the "CHA-CHING!" noise you hear in your head as you open the menu. FYI - sandwiches are on the back, and they are much cheaper than the entrees. I had the turkey avocado melt and was very pleased. Now, back to the beer. What a selection! On tap, you've got a wide variety of microbrews from all over the country (possibly the world), including some homegrown Alaskan beers. I believe that they rotate quite frequently. If you're feeling adventurous, the menu is full of bottle listings (much more beer in the menu than food). Their offerings are so wide-ranging that they actually organize their beers by country of origin. These are people that care about beer, and care about sharing it with others. Ask the waiter what he or she recommends, and you will probably find that they are engaged and interested. Great beer selection, decent but unremarkable European-ish food to eat while drinking a fancy beer or six. The beer menu has a lot of big numbers on it, but that's because these are expensive beers rather than because markups are unreasonable. Humpy's has a better selection of American microbrews, but Cafe Amsterdam easily has the best variety of European beers in Alaska (and, to their credit, have more "out there" American microbrews than Humpy's). Leave the PBR-drinking friends and relatives at home. I prefer the egg-centric breakfast menu to the sandwiches lunch/dinner menu but breakfast does have the drawback of not traditionally being a beer-drinking meal. Then again, if there was ever a place to drink a beer for breakfast, Cafe Amsterdam is it (I have done this, and it was awesome). For dinner, the specials are much more interesting than the regular menu. Anyway, go forth and drink. read more

This is the perfect confluence of good food, good beer, and good people. We were visiting in and around the Anchorage area for a week before our cruise. Tourists, yes, but trying to avoid the usual tourist places. The great reviews on Yelp actually were what prompted me to come not to Cafe Amsterdam, but to La Bodega, the excellent beer/wine/booze shop a few doors down. I saw Cafe Amsterdam while there, looked up the reviews, and knew this was my next destination! We stopped by for a delicious dinner (homemade pierogi are a win in my book anytime!) , then wound up coming back the next day for breakfast when our original plans fell through. We stopped by just after they closed on a Sunday evening afterward and the owners remembered us and invited us in for a quick round. There followed an hour of great beer and great conversation about the craft beer circuit in Southeastern Alaska and in fact several places in the Lower 48! These folks know their beers and are happy to share their knowledge and chat over some excellent brews. They made us feel very welcome and were one of our best finds in Anchorage! (As a side note: check out the cocktails they make with local meads. I was doubtful, but they were delicious!) read more

The initial interaction is odd in the fact of taking down contact information for contact tracing even though we were vaccinated. Then they were very detailed in their maks requirement and ended with we wanted to be upfront "so you had an out". We had no issues with the rules they set in place so we proceeded and glad we did. Why did it take me so long to come into this place? From the outside it doesn't look too appealing. It's in a strip mall, and looks like a pretty small space. Quite unsuspecting.. (Maybe that's the point) Once inside, you are treated awesome decor and an endless bounty of craft and import beers. It seems they rotate the draft selection quite often, so it's never the same stuff, which I love. The Bartender seemed to know a fair bit about the products as well, which is a dealbreaker for me. I did not eat here, only drank a couple of ales in here while I was waiting out traffic, but i a paroused the menu and it looks great. Mostly breakfast.. which is fine with me. My family and I went to brunch here on a recent Sunday and enjoyed our experience. We didn't have to wait at all and ended up eating the the atrium area. Our server was attentive and our food was very good. I had the moluska eggs benedict (traditional bendict with lox) and while I don't generally order benedicts I thought this was very good and there was a lot of lox. We also ordered an apply pancake for the table and we all enjoyed it. It was very thick and much more like a very fluffy cake than a pancake and the brown sugar cream sauce was very thick. The pancake definitely satisfied my sweet tooth for the day. I would suggest sitting in the atrium as the high ceilings and windows let in a lot of natural light in the morning while the plants and the table umbrellas make it feel more cozy. I was getting a bike repair so thought why not get some beers in me. I believe this is the only establishment that serves in the Metro mall area. The women who was the bartender was really nice and intelligent about the beers being offered. I ordered a half beer half mead drink and though it was amazing. The food looks good, maybe a little high in price, but it sounded authentic. I will for sure return and order some food. I believe they are known for their benedicts and reuben's. I've been here maybe a dozen times. I usually get the Reuben because it is the best I've had anywhere. I did try a burger and it was really tasty, but slightly on the rare side for me. The place is always clean and the wait staff are polite and friendly. As mentioned in another review the dress code seems quite casual with jeans and t-shirts the norm. Every time I've been there the food is hot and fresh. The bread used is always fresh, soft, and flavorful (I don't think they make their own, but it's delivered fresh daily). The have a house blueberry vinegarette dressing that I know they make in house (I asked) that is absolutely wonderful. Prices are a little on the high side ($12-$15 for sandwich and salad), but not bad for an occasional lunch. If you go here you have to get the Reuben, it's definitely the best in town! read more

Will never go here again. Myself, my husband, and my children came into the restaurant all with masks ON, we were UNkindly greeted by the hostess/server with her mask policy, she then asked if we still wanted to stay. We agreed, she then sat us, and continued to tell us we could not take off our masks for any reason, other then sipping or when actively eating, at this point I realized she had placed a stereotype on my family, maybe because we had kids, we are a younger family? No idea. Then my husband asked if they had a drink menu, she then responded in a snarky voice that he "was looking right at". (It was apparently a page in the menu, he had asked nicely while she replied with disgust). We decided to just have a drink because she obviously didn't want us in the restaurant considering her demeanor. Once we ordered the drinks she told us that we would still have to keep our masks on while we were drinking and then asked if we still wanted to stay? Again we said yes. Once we paid our check and we're leaving she perked up and told us to have a good day, apparently excited to see us go. The menu had some healthy breakfast options, including egg whites and veggie selections, but minimal choices for vegans The food was fair, but the homefries seemed undercooked. First and foremost I think Cafe Amsterdam has the best eggs benedict in Anchorage. With that being said, they are slightly on the pricey side for their food. The eggs benedict was $13.00and the omelet was also $13. The coffee was good, even the decaf. I also ordered the yogurt with berry compote for our son and was surprised when he rejected the second bite. Upon tasting it I figured out that it is plain yogurt, and the berry compote is super tart. Had to use sugar to sweeten it up to make it palatable. Also, the potatoes that accompanied the breakfast could have cooked a little bit longer. The service was okay. Our server was pretty nice. It was pretty obvious that there were a couple waitresses working there that should be banned from working with people, incredibly unfriendly and never cracking a smile. I was grateful they weren't serving us! Over all our experience was okay. I was very happy with the eggs benedict, but the rest was lacking. This is a great place to hang out and enjoy some great beers from around the world. Ken does a great job of bringing in some real gems. Although the menu is limited the beer list is exceptional. As I have mentioned in the past this is the place to go find a great beer and enjoy the afternoon or evening. The people are very knowledgeable of what they have so just let them know what you like and they will set you up with a couple of choices. She is reason this place fails. She talks to her staff as if they are children and treats customers the same. With so many places to eat in Anchorage, it's hard to find some of the gems amongst all the bigger attractions. You may not hear about Café Amsterdam as "the place to go to get (insert food/drink here)" like you would some of the downtown places but that's a good thing. Located in the same plaza as Great Harvest Bread (across from Sears Mall), you've got lots of parking, easy wait times and the beer is fantastic. Did I say the beer is fantastic? I'll say it again because it merits saying again; fantastic. First of all they have an amazing selection of European beers, especially Belgian ones. There are some beers here that I haven't seen anywhere else. With a laid back, true café atmosphere, and new specials; you can expect to something new with every visit. My first trip in was primarily for beer but I had a late breakfast consisting of the Bavarian Apple Pancake I got the large pancake and it was most certainly that, large. I like a big plate of food so this was perfect, even though I couldn't finish all of it. The apples were fresh and the sauce was a perfect compliment; however it could have used some kind of caramelized nut of some kind, like pecans or walnuts. The other items on the menu that I saw others eating looked rather tasty as well, however most of what is on the menu gravitates towards the breakfast side of things (not complaining). The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about their menu, especially the beer. It makes me wonder if they only hire people that are beer drinkers. I love this place! Everyone was so friendly and knowledgeable. My mom and I were on vacation from Cali and wanted a place with good food and a unique ambiance. We found it here! The Ruben on fresh dark rye was delicious, unlike anything I ever had before. I asked for a side of seafood chowder (quite tasty) and cole slaw (crisp and fresh) - both were up to par with exactly what I was looking for. Sitting at the bar made us feel like we were in Europe. One of the most largest and diverse beer menus in Anchorage. A nice bar area separate from the dining portion. The food menu is not too expansive but what they have on it is awesome, especially for breakfast. Yes the food isn't overly complicated but I don't want to make eggs benedict at home, nor can I compare with their amazing hollandaise sauce. The only Dutch dining tradition that I wish they expanded on more is that of the pannekoeken. The apple bake is good, but we need far far more of a selection when it comes to pannekoekens. read more

I rarely go out to eat because of COVID but my son and I were on our own after church today and thought we would grab breakfast. I have eaten here before and although we sometimes get less than stellar service, the food is clean and good. Today however, we walked in wearing our masks and walked slightly towards the checkin desk. Immediately, the woman at the check in desk starts directing us to wait in the corner away from the door. Waving at us with her hands as if to shoo us. We calmly walk backwards to the directed spot and a woman from behind the 'bar' raises her voice at us and tells us they can't help us and that we'll have to wait in the corner until she has time. There are 2 tables in the restaurant with people in them. ?? She continues to raise her voice at us to wait as if we have done something wrong by walking in the front door. We are backed into a corner and I immediately felt uncomfortable. My son is asking me what we did wrong. I am wondering the same thing. We had a mask and walked in. To treat customers so poorly and harass them for walking in your establishment is something I as a business owner do not understand. My son and I took our masks and business elsewhere. This was a great breakfast spot. We came here before leaving for Whittier for our cruise. We enjoyed the fun Dutch ambience, with wooden shoes hanging from light fixtures and Van Gogh paintings. The mushroom and Swiss omelette and the Bavarian Apple Pancake were both delicious and we received great service from the owner who served us. The clientele here is mostly local and some of the friendly locals struck up conversations with us we added to the experience.
