The food was also very amazing. They served some complimentary bread with a butter cup for each person at the start of the meal. Entrees: -Cioppino: $42. This one has a bit of everything if you can't decide. The tomato base was great. It's good for dipping the bread. -Pork & duck agnolotti: $32. -Duck breast: $43. Flavor was good. -Black cod: $43. Delicious. 10 out of 10 recommend. -Halibut (special): $45. Great char and crisp on top. Risotto had good flavor too. Dessert: -Panna cotta: $14. The name sounded better than the taste. This was a bit of a let down for me. Too many chia seeds and not enough orange and strawberry. -Ice cream (3 flavors): $14. Mint chip ("world's best"!), brownies & cream, pistachio. The manager who greeted us was warm and welcoming, and the setting feels classic and charming right in the heart of town. Everyone at the table loved their dishes. Such a great spot for a romantic dinner in Mendocino! We were staying in the area for a Valentine's Day getaway and came here for a nice dinner. The restaurant is set in a converted 19th century Victorian farmhouse and the ambiance is really cozy without feeling stuffy. It was a rainy evening but it still felt warm and relaxed inside. We got a bottle of local Trousseau Noir to share. It was a pretty light red and easy to drink which was exactly what we were looking for. We were served complimentary bread and butter to start and then shared the Wild Mendocino Mushroom Gnocchi and Braised Pork Cheeks for our entrees. Both plates were delicious but the pork cheek which was covered in a super rich pork jus stole the show and the sauce was just perfect on the creamy risotto. Service was lovely as well and we really enjoyed just taking our time having dinner inside on a rainy night. A local recommended Cafe Beaujolais, and I'm so glad that we decided to have brunch here! Cafe Beaujolais accepts reservations; however, we didn't have to wait too long for them to set up a table for two. Inside is very cozy, and all the tables have white linen table clothes, which makes the rustic interior feel more elevated. My partner and I ordered the Tour de Mendocino and the Granola & Fruit Bowl with a side of sausage. I was really impressed with the food, and the bowl was packed with seasonal fruits including peaches, cherries, figs, and strawberries. My partner enjoyed the French toast and noted that the scrambled eggs were good too. An excellent choice for an anniversary celebration dinner. All of our selections were top notch in taste, quality, uniqueness, and freshness. Service was superb and attentive. It's rare to have every expectation met on such an important day. Either we're lucky, or Cafe Beaujolais is just that good. Take a look at my photos. Every dish was impressive and our server was so wonderful. The employees here work as a well oiled machine and help each other out to make sure things run smoothly. There's a story about the restaurant origin on the front cover of the menu. Come visit to learn about their cool history. It's a small dining room and they pack a lot of tables. Had a glass of wine at The Waiting Room before I went in here without a reservation, they were very accommodating considering the holidays. They bring you house baked bread first which was average, but a nice touch. Foie gras was as expected, fatty and seasoned. One and done for me as the ducks are treated inhumanely. Not too many places serve it as this particular one was flown in from New York. The black cod was cooked perfectly. Agnolotti under the cod was a bit too al dente, but flavors were great with the beets. Paired with a glass of sauvignon blanc, it was pretty good. My wife and I felt that their flavors were off in essentially all their dishes. I had a lamb shank and my wife had the fish. Both were mediocre with an off taste. A new favorite breakfast spot of mine in Mendocino. So after going to Mendocino a bunch of times we've had to hone in on the breakfast options. After all, breakfast is the wifey's favorite meal. The goal is usually to get to breakfasts spots right when they open so we can avoid peeps but even though this place usually fills up right as they open the doors, I do love the vibe. There is an elegance to it which goes with the name. But yet at the same time it does also have a homey feel like an old mom and pop breakfast spot in the Bay. For some reason out of all the times I've gone, theres always this older gentleman who seems like he's a customer but he's always just walking into the kitchen. Luckily he's never too loud or obnoxious. I just figure he's a regular who is close to the people that work here. Ultimately he always looks like he is having a good time. I mean when you think about it, the food can't be half bad if I continuously see this dude here... But the food is actually really really good. Ive come here a few times and the food always goes above and beyond. I really look forward to the breakfast every-time I go because I know it's always going to be a good meal. That's just how consistent they are. Recently I tried Benedict and I was super impressed. Both of the eggs oozed out the golden goodness when you put the knife through. The Hollandaise sauce was light, lemony and creamy. I loved the amount of Ham they give you too. Potatoes are scrumptious. The portions are pretty solid. Great service too. I don't even like pancakes very much and I so rarely order them but their special had peaches and I'm a sucker for peaches... turns out I'm also a sucker for slightly crispy pancakes and Cafe Beaujolais delivered! Mine were delicious but I also had a bite of a blueberry pancake from a friend and I believe those were somehow even better! The eggs Benedict was so so. Weeknight spontaneous dinner as tourists from the Bay Area. We were lucky to snag a table with about a 15 minute wait. Vibes are romantic old cottage, special occasion dinner type so dress accordingly. We felt a little out of place not as dressed up, but we were hungry after finding out the Italian place next door was completely booked and so here we are. It's a pricey establishment, similar to NYC or more fancier SF restaurants. That kind of set some expectations before any of the dishes arrived. Flavors were above average, and can tell the kitchen staff know what they're doing. Even the walnut financier and berry cake for dessert were yummy and not your average 'i see this everywhere' type of desserts. The walnut flavor was there, and the financier had a slight hard crisp exterior while the inside was heavenly soft and warm. The berry cake was bursting with fresh berries, and was a very out of cookbook berry purple color (not yellow sponge cake layered w/fruit pebble type) so kudos to the dessert chef too! We are in Mendocino for a week, and have eaten out every night. I've already reviewed the other restaurants we visited and some of them were given 5 stars, so if could, I would give Cafe Beaujolais 5.5 stars. The food was the best of all the places we ate at. I got the black cod and my husband got the cioppino. Both were very very good. The frangipane tart was excellent too! Our waiter was a bit on the serious side to start with, but seemed to loosen up as the evening progressed. But polite and helpful. The hostess was very professional. We probably would have been labeled "difficult" because we wanted another table that wasn't so tightly placed and in the corner and asked for another table. The others were not occupied but were reserved for other customers. She handled it all very well and didn't blink an eyelid or take it personally. And this is another reason for the 5.5 stars! We ended up waiting in the Waiting Room coffee shop/bar for about 1/2 hour. The bartender was especially friendly and very helpful. Well done, Cafe Beaujolais! I was surprised to see Vietnamese prawn salad and foie gras in the same setting, but it just ensures there's something for everyone here. They were crispy and fluffy. If I could go back, I'd probably order their king salmon tartare appetizer, another special of the day. We had a very nice evening here about 2 weeks ago. There are some important notes that would have made the experience 5 starts vs. 4. Please do not call an entree a "braised short rib" when it truly is not. True short ribs are taken from the plate or chuck section of the cow, but there are lots of different ways to butcher and label beef. Some places, like our experience here, likely used chuck roast (which is more like pot roast) and called it short ribs, yes it was boneless.... At $38, one would think that they were getting a short rib. I'd like to think that there was a lack of care or knowledge but this important point is the fact there IS a difference. The beef was good as a result of the sauce which accompanied but it still tasted like a pot roast. I love pot roast but didn't want that for dinner. Also ordered were the Hokkaido Japanese scallops which served a whopping 3 each at the price of $42. Very good but couldn't you have included one or two more? The wine we had with dinner was a Noceto Sangovese - delicious. We started out with a bottle of Roederer rose and opted to have the pea burrata as an appetizer (it was a main entree) with - that was $25. Very small portion and I would have been disappointed had it been my main meal. The service was friendly and casual. Overall with tip the total bill was around $220. My husband and I made reservations at Cafe Beaujolais to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary. They do get booked up fast so if this is on your list of places to eat and you are going to be in the area, make sure you make reservations in advance. There is limited parking around the restaurant so most people opt for street parking. Depending on how busy it is, you may have to park a few blocks away and walk to the restaurant. We were greeted by the hostess when we got there. Unfortunately as our table was not ready at the time, we waited at the waiting room next door for about 10 minutes before the hostess guided us to our table. We were seated at one of the private rooms in the back of the restaurant. Space was very cramped though intimate. We got the table at the corner of the private room so that allowed us to enjoy the view at sunset. Service was attentive and the waitress checked in on us periodically to fill up our waters. Once ordered, our food didn't take long to arrive. The pace of the dishes were well planned out, giving us a few minutes between each course. For food, we ordered the following: Vietnamese style Dungeness crab cakes (5/5): this was one of the best dishes that night. Each crab cake was fully stuffed with crab. The sauce had a bit of a spicy kink to it. Flavors went well with each other and the crab cakes were deep fried nicely. Spanish seared octopus (3/5): huge portion on the octopus but the dish itself was too salty. Local black cod (2/5): portion size of cod was very small, bok choy was over cooked to the point that it was mostly burnt, the sauce and the duxelles agnolotti were very heavy. For a seafood dish, a lighter sauce would complement it much better because it brings out the freshness of the fish. Liberty farms duck breast (5/5): this was also one of the highlights of this dinner. Portion size was very reasonable. The duck breast was nicely seasoned with the five spices and cooked perfectly, crispy on the outside, tender inside. The sauce and every ingredient in this dish went well with each other. Highly recommend and just this dish alone will motivate us to come back. Coconut cream pie (4/5): just the right amount of sweetness and the perfect way to end a meal. The dessert is filled with fresh coconut pieces, and coconut cream. My husband got a glass of wine, very generous pour and price was reasonable. It went well with the dishes we ordered. I ordered the dungeness crab omelette and it was so buttery and filled with a ton of crab, vegetables and mascarpone cheese. It was so good I want to attempt to recreate it at home! We had champagne and the hand foraged mushroom gratin for a starter (a special) that was unbelievably good. A Reisling and Pinot with duck breast, which was excellent, and wild scallops which were good though nowhere as good as the duck. We tried the a dessert - which I can't remember the name of, which was good though nowhere near as good as the fabulous desserts we had at Trillium Cafe. It is a pricey restaurant - we would absolutely return for the duck and that starter. They were both superb. Got to the restaurant and waited a few minutes for the hostess to seat us. We asked for a specific table in the corner since there was a large group with children in one part of the restaurant and we wanted to be seated away from them. She made it clear that she was quite reluctant to do this but eventually she relinquished and seated us in our desired location. We quickly got water and menus and ordered fairly quickly. We had salads which were large and very nicely prepared. I ordered one of the specials, a pork chop. This arrived completely undercooked in parts to the point it was oozing blood. I asked for it to be taken back and properly cooked. When it came back the server said "I hope this is more to your liking", when really the point was that the pork was undercooked, so it wasn't about wanting it cooked to "my liking" but wanting it not to make me sick! Dessert was a peach tart but was nothing special and was really very dry. Not what I expected for $14. The biggest shock was when the bill came and I discovered my undercooked pork chop was $65. I guess it was my fault for not asking (I was trying not to look cheap), but even though it was (eventually) a nice chop it wasn't particularly large and really wasn't that special. So given that there was no apology for the undercooked food and really everything is way overpriced for what you get. I wouldn't go back, but the restaurant decor and ambience is nice, but next time we'll stick to Trillium and Luna. Better food and better value for money. read more
