    Breakfast burrito
    David F.

We drove up to Mendocino to visit for a few hours. We got hungry after wandering around for a while and were hoping to find something quick and not too expensive. It turned out that was not an easy objective! But then we stumbled on the Garden Bakery and decided to see if they had anything lunch-worthy. Fortunately, they did. We split a breakfast burrito and then bought a cinnamon roll and two danishes: mango cream cheese and strawberry cream cheese. It's a small interior, pretty much a to-go operation, but there are tables outside in the garden (hence the name). We found a nearby table with nice greenery all around, although the tables and chairs could use a more regular cleaning. Still it was a pretty spot for lunch. The breakfast burrito worked great for lunch - chock-full of scrambled eggs, mozzarella cheese and bacon. Yum! Then we moved onto the sweets - wow, everything was great. The cinnamon roll was to die for and both danishes were marvelous! All in all, two thumbs up for Garden Bakery.

My boyfriend and I came to this bakery/coffee spot while on a weekend getaway. The drinks were decent for their price. I got a hot earl grey tea for $2 and my boyfriend got a 16oz latte. We weren't able to get a bakery items as nothing caught our eye. They did have tacos and burritos if you're hungry. This bakery is on the side, you kind of have to walk into a nice garden pathway. What caught our attention was the Raven that was outside of the bakery. This kind man gave him a piece of bread which he enjoyed. Overall it was an okay spot, nothing too crazy. The customer service was sweet.

Garden Bakery is tucked away in the midst of a backyard garden and is one of few coffee shops open in Mendocino Village (and to its credit, the only one that's open "late" until 4:30 pm). There's minimal seating inside (just 2 stools next to the window), but ample seating in the garden area outside. I stopped by here mid-afternoon and by 3pm, the pastry counter was slim pickings. The bakery offers an interesting mix of traditional pastries and Mexican food (tacos, burritos, and quesadillas). Since I was in the mood for something savory, I got a turkey empanada, which was hearty but honestly not worth $11.50 (the price was suspiciously inconspicuous, so that was on me for blindly buying). FYI: $5 minimum for credit cards. I'd give this place 3.5 stars, but rounding up to 4 stars.

I guess the best part of our encounter with Garden Bakery, was after coming here and having a terrible time, we happened upon the Waiting Room which was incredible and without this bad breakfast, we may not have ever found the Waiting Room! We stopped in here for breakfast during our trip in Mendocino, and even though it was breakfast time, the place was dead. We parked on the street and made our way in. Inside, it was even more dead, and the cases were almost empty. I ordered a Cinnamon Roll ($3.50 I think), a Mango Cream Cheese Danish ($3.50), and was hoping for a tamal but they were out of those, breakfast burritos, and just about everything else. The person helping us behind the counter was really short with us, dismissive, unhelpful, and as soon as we paid, they threw our items at us and walked away. Once to the car, we bit into our baked goods. My Danish, although it looked pretty ok, was super dry like all the butter had baked out of the layers in the dough. There was filling, but it was so sparce and unremarkable, it definitely didn't taste like mango or cream cheese at all. Hubby's cinnamon roll was bland and also dry, and the frosting was grainy and heavy. Overall, a terrible experience with really lackluster baked goods, unfriendly staff, and not somewhere I would return if I were back in the area. Do what we did and give this place the *pass* and head straight to the Waiting Room- you'll be glad you did, trust me.

Stop by for a quick lunch and found the tacos here are simple and delicious. It's so nice to enjoy a good lunch in the beautiful garden.

Delicious find! Little alley way leads to delights! Small selection but delicious! Pic of 1/2 of blueberry cream cheese danish. And reasonable pricing!

Strawberry cream cheese danish and cinnamon roll

We spent the weekend in Mendocino and were craving sweets before heading back to our inn. I found Garden Bakery on Yelp and the mango cream cheese danishes brought us in. But when we arrived around 4pm-ish, they were sold out of almost everything except a few strawberry cream cheese danishes and cinnamon rolls...so we ordered both, and agreed that these were some of theeee *best* pastries we've ever had! The danish pastry was flaky, generously-filled, and flavorful; the cinnamon roll was doughy, crispy around the edges, and delicious. They have an outdoor garden seating area, but the inside is pretty plain; you just walk up to the counter and order. We were surprised to see they had tamales, empanadas, quesadillas, etc so will stop by again next time we're in Mendocino.

    Chili relleno burrito

We stopped by to check out the pastries they have to offer, but most of it was gone by the time we got here around lunch time. We settled for some lunch instead. The lady behind the counter wasn't too friendly, but answered my questions. We ordered the chili relleno burrito ($9.5), three tacos ($8.5) and chicken tamales ($3). They are cash only. The tacos are made right on the grill with onion and cilantro. The burrito is pre-made and she reheats it in the microwave. The tacos are the best! Every meat was grilled to perfection with wonderful flavors and I liked them all in their own way. The salsa that came with was fresh and delicious. The burrito fell short for me. The chili was not spicy and not much flavor. It was cheesy though. The tamale was small, but packed with flavor. I didn't get any chicken, but was a nice bite. Overall, it was a good taco fix. But I probably wouldn't return. I'm always disappointed when my food is reheated in the microwave.

Such a good find! Don't let the look deceived you, it's very simple but their pastries are delicious. Crispy and melting in your mouth at the same time. They are not overly sweet as well which is great, you could eat 10 of them and not feel overwhelmed by it! Honestly just stop there just for the danishes! You are welcome !

The meat in both tacos I ordered was overcooked and tough. I tried a chicken and a pork taco. At $4 each, they were tiny but tasty

I noticed a queue outside of Franny's, so I just got into line and waited, not even knowing what I was waiting for! Let me tell you, this review is coming almost 2 years later because the baked good I discovered here was so delightful and so life changing that it has resulted in an insatiable obsession for me. I went up to the counter finally and, feeling overwhelmed by the selection and display case, asked the cashier what they would recommend. I ended up with a croissant, a cookie, and the cashier-recommended canneles. I didn't even eat the cannele until the following day, and it was pure bliss. Cute little pasty about 2in tall with a crispy, caramelized experiour and moist custardy 'cake' on the inside. I had never eaten anything like it. To this day, I search far and wide for canneles and will go to great lengths to secure them. They are a rare delight simply because of the artistry and precision and expensive tools/ingredients required to make them.
