We went in for a quick bite to eat, and the food was filing and good (had a crepe, cucumber salad and feta fries) but the resturant lets customers smoke and clearly doesn't care about Chicago's anti-smoking ordinance. I stumbled on this place about 6 years ago when I first moved to the city. I am part Serbian so I am extra-critical of Serbian food that is not made by me or someone in my family. This is one of several Serbian/Balkan restaurants I have been to, and it's by FAR the best. First off, the food has always been amazing. The meat is second to none. Get the Beograd special so you can sample several grilled meats - all are delicious. It serves about 4 people if you get some salad and Burek too. You can also get a lot of the meats uncooked in the attached grocery store, which is nice. While I make my own Cevapi, I don't have a way to encase sausage so buying the spicy sausage is incredibly convenient. For those that aren't as amped up about grilled meats, the salads are wonderful, especially the shopska salad, which has cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, onions, and shredded (!) feta cheese. The bread is also delicious -- Make sure you spread some Kajmuk (tastes like a feta/butter/cream cheese combo) on the bread, top it with a ajvar (red pepper spread) and some grilled meat! Now for the Burek. It's like a filo-dough, cheesy pie. I highly recommend the spinach and cheese one, to off set all of the delicious grilled meat you eat. Lastly, the desserts are delicious. The crepes are amazing, especially the nutella and hiprose jam. At this point, you will need to be rolled out of the restaurant, but you'll be so happy it won't matter! Now, a few years ago I may have given Beograd 4 stars, with one star being deducted for atmosphere and service. HOWEVER, in the past 6 years, both have improved dramatically. They have expanded and added a nice room just off of the bar, for more of a restaurant feel (it has a fireplace). The service is not like at Chili's or McDonalds. It's much more laid back, and can seem rude to people not used to going to European restaurants. You can make reservations, which will help avoid the waiting. Basically, don't come here if you are in a rush. When you go to a European restaurant, you should expect the European PACE as well. Also the time it takes to make extremely FRESH food. Enjoy some amazing drinks (especially the Serbian beer!), enjoy your company, and take your time eating. You will not regret it! read more

If you like authentic Eastern European restaurants, then this will be very enjoyable. I went there and everyone was from Serbia. They played Serbian songs from the Belgrade radio station. Many locals were drinking and singing along to the songs. It reminded me of when I spent time in Eastern Europe. The place looks European as well. The waitresses were cute and fast. The Serbian customers are a bit more demanding then Americans. And they do things that might be offensive to American waitresses but common in Europe. I had a large beer from Serbia and pork schnitzel. It came with bread but I didn't eat it because I had enough bread. I also ordered a delicious Serbian salad. Very hardy food and good beer. Beograd is simply delicious! Get the shopska salad and, of course, the cheese burek. The cafe is also attached to a small Serbian deli. So, I stopped in here one time last summer. My boyfriend is from Serbia and I wanted to check out the scene. This is also the location of a Serbian language meetup and I was considering joining the group. I only popped in for coffee but I liked what I saw. If I eventually get to eat here, I will add or remove stars but I liked it. I also would need to bring the expert as I would not feel comfortable judging the food, as I am not 100% sure what it is supposed to taste like. It smelled good in there. I like cevapi. As far as service being inattentive, maybe that's just how they roll but I was fine with it. I tried this place on a Thursday morning because I heard it gets slammed on Saturdays. I ordered a Nescafé (hot) and Nutella banana walnut crepe. It was the best crepe I have ever had. The atmosphere is totally European. "Beograd" is actually the original name of the capital city Belgrade in Serbia, so that's a cool little-known fact! Very cute place and good service. If you are in a rush, you have to ask for the check. Otherwise this is a nice place to relax and enjoy your company. Definitely coming back here. read more

The breakfast here is phenomenal. I got the cheese stuffed burek, which was a huge egg-bread type pastry lined with a salty mozzarella consistency-type cheese. I could eat 1/4 of it. My husband got the sausage omelette, which was really just scrambled eggs with 2 wedges of feta cheese and 2 huge sausages on top. Fantastic. Orangina! Wonderful waitstaff dismantles the stereotype of the swarthy, tempermental Serb, though there was a high incidence of warm-up pants. Love this place!!! read more

I love bosnian food! i'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but i know delicious! the beograde special was great. for $25 three very hungry people can eat and have left overs! we also got the chicago river crepe and that wasn't that good. it wasn't bad, but it was not in the same league as the meat platter. i can't wait to come back. we had the jaffa for dessert and it was huge, however, i didn't really love it. we finished it, but i won't be dreaming of that cake. in short, get the beograde special, everything else is going to disappoint! read more

I had a similar experience to Sean. I live right around the corner, and this place looks very inviting. I have tried it twice and both times felt a little uncomfortable. The first time we walked in and stood around for a minute or two not know if we were supposed to just grab a table on the sidewalk or have someone seat us. No one payed any attention to us so we just grabbed a table for ourselves. After about 10 minutes the waitress came out to get our orders. She didn't speak English well, but this wasn't really a problem. Not being able to communicate seemed to make her very uncomfortable and kept her from being attentive I think. It would have been a 2-star experience, but the food was really good. My friend had a burger that was stuffed with mushrooms and cheese on a really good homemade bun. I had a bean and sausage soup that was also very good. I am tempted to go back a third time just because the food is so good, but I should brush up on my Serbian first. This is one of my most FAVORITE places in Chicago to eat...and I am not even Serbian! Well, my husband is Serbian therefore I was exposed to this amazing cuisine. As a vegetarian, there are so many choices, with my favorite being Spinach and cheese Burek. The salads are also delicious, service great, atmosphere exciting and drink options excellent. This place is always packed with majority being from Serbian but also a good number of Americans who are starting to love Serbian cuisine as well. Being that my husband's family is Serbian - this place is the real deal. Yes, we did notice a lot of locals there and most of the staff if not all, were speaking Serbian. However, you will feel at easy because they do speak English. The cheese burek was great. My coworker and I were on a weekend trip to Chicago before our week of training for work started. Famished from an early morning flight and traffic from the airport, we made this stop our first one in the city for some nourishment, even though it was out of the way from where we were staying. I was delighted that I was surrounded by locals, who occupied many of the tables, eating their own breakfasts and drinking coffee, chatting away in their native languages. You know a place is good when people of the same ethnicity as the food eat there and seem to enjoy it. After perusing the menu, we both decided on the beef goulash. In no time, we were both brought steaming bowls of hearty stewed beef with spices and delicious mashed potatoes, along with a basket of bread, which I did not eat but left to my coworker. I almost finished the whole dish, but I was unable to get through the last few bites due to my stomach not being large enough! There was two of us so we tried the Beograd Special. $25 for a platter full of various meats and some really good bread. Overall, everything was good. What ever they mix into their hamburger patties is fantastic. Very flavorful. When I first saw 'hamburger' on the menu i thought...really? They were great. I would go back just for a burger and beer. Service was less than stellar. Food came out quickly, had to ask for additional drinks once ours were empty and had to ask for the check after being finished for quite some time. So if you are in no rush, and don't demand to be catered to every second you are at a restaurant, I would suggest trying Beograd. it was my fist experience with Serbian food and I will definitely consider stopping in again. read more

Very authentic Serbian/Croatian food. Had dinner with a group so we were able to taste many of the delicious items on the menu. Everything was yummy, the service was friendly, the wine flowed and our tummys were full when we left. Grocery/deli next door sells many of the menu items as well as other Eastern European specialties.
