Charming place for breakfast very good food and service. I would definitely go off-season because it is absolutely packed in the summer.

We stopped in on a beautiful Friday in July on our way to another part of the Cape. (Thank you yelpers for your reviews.) We were pleasantly surprised that there were plenty of open tables inside and outside. What we didn't know is that there is pressure to place your order at the counter because there was about a 40 minute wait for food because the kitchen was switching over and finishing up after breakfast. The staff were friendly but there was a busy vibe and I wouldn't say they were particularly helpful - mostly because of no dedicated spot for lining up to order and the woman behind the counter kept instructing people to move the line back so that the food could get carried through. It felt like the person in charge of directing traffic (and there was a young man in charge of this!) should have been enforcing the spot, the printed menus should be moved to this spot instead of on a post in the middle of the "food carrying zone," and that person should also point patrons in the direction of the many specials boards. As they dubbed themselves, "Sandwich's sandwichery," I ordered the Mother Hen sandwich- I was drawn to the avocado and bacon. It was served on a ciabatta style roll and was very tasty. I ordered my sandwich "light on the herb mayo" as I'm not always a mayo gal. It could have used more. I was also tempted by the GIANT pastries they had on display but didn't want to go overboard on day one of vacation. As we sat waiting for our food, we saw lots of people coming in for take out as well as ordering to eat-in. Families, large groups, couples, and solo diners all seemed accommodated. I noted it would probably be a fun place to grab sandwiches to go and eat at the beach or some other outdoor place. During this time I also noticed several other specials that looked really intriguing but in my panic to get an order in, I missed the signs entirely. After finally getting over the Bourne bridge, we needed an early lunch. When in Sandwich...get a Sandwich! Cafe Chew was switching from breakfast to lunch when we arrived, and the ordering process was really chaotic. The line was not well identified, and in addition to the regular menu, several "specials" were noted on various signs/blackboards at random locations. We were told it might take 40 minutes for our food to be ready, even though there were plenty of tables/seats available. I ordered the Meeting House Melt, which was described as rare roast beef. It wasn't rare at all, but was tender and the multigrain bread - after being pressed - was really good. I would have appreciated more horseradish aioli, as it wasn't detectable at all, and the meat was piled in the middle of the bread instead of being spread crust to crust. Also, the price was listed as $13.95 on the menu, but I was charged $14.95, plus an undisclosed $1.09 "service charge." Driving back to Boston we thought would stop and try a new sandwich shop. Overall, it was fine, but I certainly won't be rushing back. The Customer Service was very friendly and the place is cute with lots of outdoor seating. Unfortunately, the sandwiches were lackluster. Pretzel roll was dense and a bit stale. The multigrain bread was delicious, but don't ask for anything toasted because apparently it's a problem. And the tuna fish, was bland. Popular spot in Ma, sandwich. Half hour wait for to get order. The restaurant specialize in brunch. They have a really pretty out door seating for a nice Sunday brunches but not worth for a quick stop. It takes a while to get the food. Between ordering and getting food, make sure to budget time. The restaurant staff is nice, however because of how popular they are they might miss something on the take out bags and over charge for items that was included in the menus. Nevertheless once getting the food, the it is worth it. From the restaurant I got the breakfast basic with one egg, bread and potatoes. The bread is what I expected. Food - 2/3 of my breakfast was uncooked. Potatoes were warmed. Not cooked. Mushrooms were hard. Uncooked. Toast was asked to be dark. Came back light and unbuttered. There's no true waitstaff that checks on you so if you want to ask a question or get service, you have to get up and find someone. Ambiance is nice. Nothing outstanding. Wow! I've come here a few times for a lunch sandwich or salad, but this was my first breakfast experience and it didn't disappoint in the least! I cannot get over how good their German breakfast sandwich was! I can honestly I never would have thought of doing breakfast on a pretzel, and I'm sad this was a first because it was THAT good! Also, I must say picking a breakfast item was super hard because the entire menu is just top notch. Their coffees are so delicious too! It was hard to pick hot or iced, so I may have gotten one of each. Oops! I do not regret this choice at all! I also had to take some of their freshly baked items home for the remainder of the week. I cannot wait to get my hands on them! This place was packed, but it ran effective! The young man who greeted me was wonderful, the cashier was sweet, the barista was excellent and the owner was the most friendly, and helpful gentleman! Food is great but they are wildly disorganized with front of house. Teenagers running the show with ZERO clue on customer service. Second time this happened. Can't come back again. Such a bummer your place has best food. I waited in line for 15'mins got to register and she wouldn't let me order until I had table. Where is sign? Where is person asking me if I want a table? Had a great lunch at Cafe Chew - my wife is wheat sensitive so it was great they had gluten free bread as an option. We both had the Cuban sandwich - amazing - I live in Tampa and have many pressed Cubans and the one was among the best. The pork they use is the difference maker. Bustling, busy place in Sandwich, MA offering a variety of menu items, coffee, bakery items (and really, how can you not get a sandwich in Sandwich????) which is obviously extremely popular spot in this Cape Cod town. We chose to get a tuna melt, a freshly brewed unsweetened green tea, and pastrami sandwich and an apple dirt bomb for take out. Our order was ready pretty quickly and we loved all of it. The staff were all so friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. Parking is in lot shared lot with other businesses and it was packed when we arrived during a low season rainy day in mid April. Ordered the half a avocado chicken salad. Avocado was not fully ripe and could not believe that it wasn't peeled. Incredibly difficult to eat the salad as I had to take the avocado out, peel it, chop it up and then mix it in the salad. Stopped in here on a whim on my way to grab a brew up the street and I'm sure glad that I did. Cute little bakery/breakfast spot that would be easy to miss. Decided to get a sandwich because I had just seen the sandwich police and I was laughing about their name. Ended up with a California blt since the croissant looked good and I can't recall having a sandwich on one before. It was delightfully fresh but not super filling for the price. I really wish I would have splurged an insulin spike on some of their pastry as it looked fantastic! Staff were really friendly, the decor was inviting and everything was clean. The process of where to stand, where to order, where to pay and how to get a table is a bit convoluted but my take is that it's counter service and grab a table once you get your food. Thankfully it wasn't too busy when I was there, but I imagine a Saturday in July would be kind of wild. Cute & bustling cafe in Sandwich with tasty brunch food. The operation was a little bit clunky, though. On Saturday morning, the line was out the door. There was a host, telling us general wait times. But you're supposed to claim your own table? With the permission of the host? & then order at the counter? Or, in our case, we were told to order at the counter first & then hopefully by the time our food was ready, there would be a table available. But other folks were snagging tables when we weren't looking? It was a bit of a mess! The host was visibly stressed, too. So I don't think this operation is working. This place was amazing when Tobin and Bob owned it. It's gone so far down hill that I feel bad even for their legacy. From the food (now sub-par and over priced) to the service (beyond horrendous, really rude older servers working year round). I'd suggest going to the breakfast and lunch spot in Barnstable that's about 15 mins away (Buttercup Cafe), or the breakfast/coffee/donuts/lunch food trucks almost next door (Off the Grid), or Cafe Riverview, which is up the road in East Sandwich and serves Bfast and lunch all day. Greeted with a sign that says "STOP! WAIT until we call you up", I immediately felt unwelcome at this place. After then being totally confused by their process of finding a server (who doesn't take your order), being seated, and then having to order at the counter, the guy behind the register (who I believe is the owner) was incredibly rude to my wife as she tried to order a basic turkey & Swiss sandwich for me, heated and pressed panini style. When my wife returned to our table she was upset with the way the guy spoke to her. Once the food arrived, my sandwich was cold and not pressed. It was as if the guy completely ignored our order. I'm all for supporting local businesses. And as a resident of Sandwich, I hate to say that we'll never be back. Rule number 1 in business- treat the customer with dignity & respect. Stopped by for lunch today and surprised that it wasn't so busy. I had the special Tuna Melt and my wife had the basic chicken salad. Our food arrived in a few minutes and was amazing. We easily could have split a sandwich and been satisfied. My tuna was fresh and the perfect temperature to melt the cheese I asked for a little red onion which made it perfect. My wife loved her sandwich and brought half home. The Chew has been our go to for a quick lunch treat. The new owner has done a great job keeping the food quality and selection top notch. We are so glad we stopped in here - and have driven by the road it's off of numerous times, without ever stopping in until this week. They hand you a sign when you walk in, you pick a table, review the menu, and then order from the counter, and they bring it out to you. Our sandwiches came out fairly quickly after we ordered them. My husband had one of the specialty black board sandwiches - the Godfather (wine cured salami, imported Italian ham, lettuce, heirloom tomato, fresh mozzarella, and pesto on a ciabatta) - it's apparently pretty popular, and I can see why, it was delicious! I went with a panini - the Umbrian (imported salami, ham, fresh mozzarella, tomatoes and herb mayo). Both came with a pickle, and of course, cape cod potato chips. Both sandwiches were outstanding. What a great surprise! We stopped by on a whim and are all glad we did. Excellent food, reasonable prices, and wonderful people. Chicken salad was freshly made and tasty. Lettuce, tomato, and a little extra mayo made it even better. The bread was the star, though. Their Bahn MI special was an amazing find as well. Crisp picked cukes and onions highlighted tender slices of pork. Their sassy sauce was like a creamy slaw dressing and held everything together well.
