I heard a lot about this place...and looked forward to going. Underwhelming is how I would describe. If someone wanted to go here, I'd go again. However, it's (not) a place I'm going to choose, to go to again. See that bottle of sauce: it's a different kind of taste...not sure what's in it. But it was decent and (I did) like it. The fried rice: It had a definite sweet note to it. It didn't have a crispy texture at all. But, it was good enough to order. I'd much rather however, have a Chinese or Thai fried rice dish. The pork and black beans. The black beans, were fixed really good and a good taste. The pork, tasted ok....maybe even good. However, it was cut so thin...they cooked to give it grill scald. So, it was well dried out, being so thin. The last dish with the seafood and vegetables. That dish was way sour in flavor. My wife eats sour stuff....that dish made her mouth pucker! Tue old building and interior.... Certainly liked it...and it's great to see the old places survive and be re-purposed. A cozy place with those enclosed booths. This was my second time eating at Cafe Cusco. This time we brought friends and absolutely everything was soooo delicious! Bailey was our server, and she was excellent. They were busy at 7 pm on a Saturday night but we had reservations and we sat immediately. We each ordered a different drink and let me tell you all of them were delicious! If you haven't had a Pisco Sour this is the place to try one! We ordered the Taquenos to start and they were perfect - so much better than a mozzarella stick! We each ordered different entrees so we could taste more of the menu and let me tell you I'm not aorry we did. The flavors in every dish were spot on! Go and enjoy!! read more

I was looking for something soup and seafood and glad I found this place on Yelp. Only 8 minutes drive from my hotel. Thanks to my waitress suggestion, I didn't over order. I wanted the soup and an entree but she told me it was a huge portion so I got the Jalea Mixta for appetizer and the Chupe Grande. The Jalea Mixta is an assortment of fried squid, shrimp and white fish. It comes with two different dipping sauces. The Chupe Grande comes with a side of rice and crackers. The Chupe Grande is a spicy seafood bisque with shrimp, crawfish, calamari, peas and topped with a sunny side up and queso fresco. A perfect meal for this cold weather! Neither my sister nor myself had ever had Peruvian food. Well that changed in Springfield! This restaurant is located in a beautiful old building. The building certainly adds to the charm, but the food is so good! The food is the star. I ordered the Blackfish, my sister ordered Chicken Para Rayos. Both were really good in presentation and flavor, but the chicken was the superior dish. We had leftover chicken and shrimp the next day.. I think it was better the next day.. yum! Ahh-mazing!!! This place is a gem! I am wishing i had more meals or stomach to enjoy more of their menu. I knew I'd be happy because true South American cuisine always has fresh ingredients and full flavors. I spoke to the waitress and she worked with the kitchen to have smaller versions of their mushroom saltado and sweet potato noodle stir fry. Both are absolutely incredible. As a Peruvian I will give my humble opinion. The national dish of Perú is ceviche. I was looking forward to give it a try. The restaurant is beautiful and the atmosphere is great. Service was excellent Miami ceviche was horrible. Fish was overcooked. Leche de tigre was underwhelming. The whole experience looked more like a poorly made Mexican ceviche. I know it has more like a tropical twist with Mango but the fish was not tasty at all. Huancaina had too much cheese that masked the huancaina flavor. Tres leches was dry. What a great find tucked away on a corner in Historic Downtown Springfield. I saw the name and i thought it might be Peruvian food so I asked a group that was leaving what kind of food and they confirmed it was Peruvian and even said it was their favorite restaurant in Springfield. One look at the menu and they had me hooked. I had the Aji de Gallina, and my wife had the Chicken Aji verde which had a unique cilantro sauce. My Peruvian mother was smiling down from heaven. I'm in town for work and knew I wanted something on the healthy side that wasn't far fetch of being too millennial or "hipster" style. Before I came to this restaurant I did only a little bit of research, not because of lack of motivation but instead I knew I had to try Cafe Cusco once I got a glance of their menu. I am a fan of Peruvian food and ceviche with high expectations....Cafe Cusco's Ceviche Miami was AMAZING!!! I only was able to try this ceviche since I was dining alone,!my lack of size, and this appetizer item was not small. It was so good that I was extremely tempted to order another item but wasn't sure if I would be able to eat even half of anything. The staff at Cafe Cusco had wonderful table side manners and helpful with wanting to provide a great experience and keeping customer happy. Like the ambiance, beautiful setting and decor - 5 Service, lukewarm. Our server was a bit short, not on the friendly side and I observed other servers being friendly. 3 We ordered the vegan tamal and the Palta Frita (fired avocado). The tamal was excellent. A sweet corn and peanut masa and it was served with Huancaina cheese butter that was exceptional. The palta was different experience for us, it was very good, a little crunchy on the outside and creamy inside. We shared the Fryer Rabbit which was tender yet over salted, probably the apple cider vinegar brine. I like rabbit and prefer it with garlic and Herbes de Provence. For dessert we shared Torta de Askinosie (warm chocolate torte) with caramel fudge - it was above average, hit the sweet spot, maybe a bit too sweet. Food 3.5 My Pisco Sour was delicious. Let me start off with saying WOW! This is paradise for all vegetarians and vegans!! I came here for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon, the place wasn't busy a first, but people slowly started occupying tables. There was a street festival across the street and I assume it's generally busier. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating, I chose to sit inside due to the wind. The inside has a bar that makes absolutely amazing cocktails! Their menu is lengthy and they have a completely separate menu for vegans and vegetarians! So many great options to choose from! I started off by ordering a freshly made cocktail, pineapple hacienda and yucca mojo. The yucca mojo was a serving of fried seasoned yucca root tossed in mojo citrus pepper sauce. Absolutely delicious!My main course was their jackfruit escabeche that came with jackfruit sautéed in zesty escabeche sauce with Roma tomatoes, peppers, onion, capers, portobello, Kalamata olives and cilantro with a side of garlic rice. It deserves a review of its own for how well flavors blended together and the smell was mouth watering! Not only was it a perfectly made dish but it also tasted absolutely wonderful! Both dishes were very generous, definitely a great place if, like me, you like to eat a lot! Their service was fast and the staff friendly. Off the street parking is available. The food and decor were wonderful! We ordered the chicharron plate and black bean burger. Both were delicious and served promptly. The highlight however was the chocolate cake for dessert. I'm disappointed this restaurant is in Springfield and not in Kansas City! Found Cafe Cusco via a Yelp search and my sister confirmed on the Fine Me Gluten Free app that they're safe for celiacs and she was excited to try it. Since being diagnosed, dining out has been a complete failure for her in terms of cross contamination and getting sick after ordering supposedly GF items. We've both been to Peru years ago and were excited to try the food again. This restaurant was absolutely PACKED on a Thursday night. We managed to get a booth inside, which is beautifully decorated, but wished we could have sat outside on their nice patio with cute Peruvian decor. We have a couple South American/Peruvian restaurants in Kansas City, but none come close to the extensive menu offered at this restaurant. In a twist, the entire menu is assumed to be gluten-free and the only items that are NOT are marked with 'NGF.' While extremely rushed, the waitress was knowledgeable about celiac and quick to confirm that the kitchen has a dedicated gluten-free fryer and is used to gluten-free requests. My sister was excited to get a sandwich and fries. The bun was so normal-looking and tasting that we feared it actually contained gluten - that's how good it was! We also tried the Lomo Saltado and the Chicken Para Rayos. I loved the chicken, and even though the portions look huge in the photos, they are really right-sized and we left without any leftovers. I only wish we had room for dessert. The drink menu was interesting, but the cocktails too sweet for me. This is an allergy-safe restaurant and it's great to have cuisine options that are very different from the norm. There were rave reviews for the sangria, but it tastes like grape Kool-Aid with no wine flavor. Way too sweet. The biggest disappointment happened at the end of the night and soured the visit. We had all paid our bills and the receipts to sign had just been returned to us. I paid in cash and I had just taken my change off the bill holder. I was holding the cash in my hand and counting out ones to leave for a tip. Another employee - not our waitress, nor the woman who had returned our bills, but a third woman! - swooped by and without making eye contact or anything says "here, let me help you" and snatches the money right out of my hand! She went back behind a partition, followed by the employee who had brought me my change. My family looked at me and was like "was that your change?" "Did she just take your money?" "What's happening?" It was so weird and unsettling. I had already paid and she just grabbed all my change and left. The original woman came back a few minutes later and handed me money. This woman had taken all the ones away and replaced them with fives! I can only assume she was attempting to pad the tip by only leaving me with larger bills in the hopes that I wouldn't tip too low. It always annoys me when servers give you fives and tens for your change and I was glad the first woman had given me ones. I was PISSED by how rude this woman was to literally rip money out of my hands. It wasn't even her table. Honestly, I should have left ZERO tip after that. I'm sure many people would have. I was already planning to tip at least five dollars so I still left a five. After all, it wasn't even our waitress who did this, but I ONLY left a five and maybe I would have left more but I was so shocked by how rude she was. The service already wasn't great because the restaurant was so crowded. I wanted to purchase a couple bottles of their house hot sauce, but left without spending more money because I was so annoyed. What would have been a 5-star review is now a 3. I took one star off for the flavor (mostly the drinks) that didn't live up to the menu description, and another star for the unprecedented rudeness by some unknown employee. read more

I'm from Peru, I was very excited about this restaurant because I was surprised to find a restaurant here, I ordered three meals and two drinks, pilsen beer (very good and traditional from my city CALLAO), pisco sour (they don't use Peruvian pisco and they use Chilean pisco, I felt offended as a Peruvian), ceviche (the real ceviche doesn't use cucumber and the taste is not authentic), tuna tiradero (the fusion was good, but it's not an original dish from Peru), Amazon fried rice (it was good, but I repeat that food was not and did not have the taste of Peruvian food) the decoration of the place is very beautiful and I like every detail of the place, the service was very nice, as a Peruvian I recommend this place for the experience and the good service, but if you are looking for authentic Peruvian food, that is not the right place. read more

This spot emanates coziness + warmth while offering a special south-of-the-border dining experience. Service staff was kind and knowledgeable. They offer tasty food at reasonable prices with a South American flare. All this to say, it's an especially fun date night spot or great anytime spot. Happy Hour (HH) is Sunday-Thursday 3p to 5:30p. They have some great deals--$4 draft beer, sangria + house red + white wine. $5 select cocktails. HH food deals start at $1 and go up to $6. We shared the $2 for 2 fried cheese sticks from the HH menu (Two Tequenos)--they were really great. I enjoyed my Colorado skewers: marinated chicken smothered in a chipotle + pepper sauce over a bed of mashed potatoes--yes, ma'am! It packed a LOT of flavor. It wasn't too spicy, just flavorful. I also got to try chicken para rayos dish. It was good, but didn't quite pack enough of a punch of flavor for my liking. I liked the Colorado skewers better. Cafe Cusco serves Peruvian (fusion) food, but they serve Chilean pisco **GASP** in a "Peruvian" restaurant. So, for me, they can claim to be South American inspired, but no Peruvian would ever serve Chilean pisco. Needless to say, we were quite heartbroken at this discovery and my Peruvian won't order a pisco sour made with Chilean pisco--like not a chance. So we left really bummed about that. Another notable missing menu item was the Peruvian dish called causa. It's probably in my top 3 favorite Peruvian dishes of all time (when done well). I was really hoping they'd offer it on their menu as an appetizer maybe. It seems like they have all the ingredients from what I could piece together from other menu items. They are open Sunday-Thursday 11a to 9p and Fridays and Saturdays they stay open until 10p. All & all they are a great little spot. I'd go back. We enjoyed our time here despite some Peruvian specific misses. They do a good job bringing the spirit of Peru to Springfield, MO. Thanks for having us. We will be back. Been to a Peruvian restaurant? No? Here's your chance and you'll be happy for the experience. Latino music fills the space but this is no Mexican spin-off. It's truly unique, providing South American recipes that are a bit familiar but distinctly different. My Chupe de Rio soup, for example, had a little Nawlins feel with crawfish, onion, potato, and corn mixed into a tomato base. But the queso and cilantro were reminders I was (well south) of the border. And the whole menu continues this theme on being adventurous but familiar. There are plenty of dishes with chicken, steak, trout--all with Latin American influences. Then, your eye hits a dish with duck, goat or even rabbit.
