Not typical for a spot to maintain after ownership changes but Cafe de Thai has changed ownership several times during the 12-15 years me and my family have been coming here. Despite the frequent ownership changes, the name, the menu and the food has remained the same...go figure? As the name suggests, they offer a menu of Thai options, of which I have ordered the lemongrass chicken, (solid choice), among others. They also have a sushi bar with a large selection of options from nigiri and of course, all of the tasty "Americanized" rolls! My wife is Japanese or else I would have never known. Sushi is always on point!!! (my wife would've never returned). Service - This is also a bit of a conundrum as with the constant turnover we have experienced both good and not so good. Waitstaff is typically average, while the sushi chefs are top shelf! We actually began coming to this spot only after following one of our favorite sushi chefs who had left one of our previous "go-to" joints. They are fantastic and always have fresh fish. My test is to always order saba (mackeral) nigiri. The condition of the saba always tells me if a sushi spot is legit or not. If it looks dry or tastes reel fishy...RUN!!!!! Our family go to order... Wife - Usually a sushi roll or 2 and sometimes the Pad Thai. (excellent). Me - The Kelly Roll and yellow curry with chicken (spicy level - 8) Ya I know. I have not been here that often, my mom wanted to order to go here on Friday for dinner. We waited for a while to get any attention in there. maybe 3 people seemed to be waiting in the lobby. We ordered and I was so shocked to see the price and had to double check it to make sure it was correct. Which it did seem to be. Anyways, while waiting for the food some people came in and had to wait also for any greetings from the staff. It did seem like one family was seated but left right away, not sure if it was because it was clear they were backed up or what happened. Another person got their order, and the hostess had to take everything out to take inventory to ensure the order was correct before the person left. The hostess did explain that something allegedly was down like their computer or something. The experience was not pleasant to say the least and understandable. The food was warm and tasty, and the portion sizes seem fair. If I go again I will try to make it to their HH and earlier to avoid any chaos! read more

This has been my favorite restaurant for both Thai food and sushi for quite a while. I had a bad day and decided to stop for Thai food to brighten my day. There was only one other customer in the restaurant that late in the afternoon. But despite not being busy, after getting the menu, I waited for an exceptionally long time for service. I watched the waitress talking to the other customer for all that time and completely ignoring me. I decided to give her one more minute, then I'd leave. After counting the 60 seconds, I got up and headed for the door. That's when the waitress finally looked at me and hurried over before I reached the door. She said the other customer had questions/issues about the food (which she had already eaten, as there were only empty plates on the table). It had been obvious to me that they were simply having a casual conversation (in Thai) for their dynamics, not an issue. I returned to my table to order an appetizer and a Thai beer. She said they were out of Singha, as well as Kirin; they only had Sapporo (which I don't like). A Thai restaurant out of Thai beer?!! That was the final straw and I left. I decided to try a new Thai restaurant in the area instead - Chiin. Their food was fantastic! (see my review for them). Even better than here. So, while this place will remain my sushi go-to, they've lost all my future business for Thai food. Cafe de Thai & Sushi really dropped the ball today. read more

Dirty! Have been there many times and food was fine. Heard it is under new ownership. Old spoons in sauces delivered to table, flies swarming my food and was charged different prices per plate than what menu listed by several dollars. Complained and was told they were waiting on new menus. Buy a sticker and put the correct price on the menu instead of not being transparent to your customers. Really tough. The food is great. Good portions and lots of variety. The issue is the service. We areived around 4pm, and there were 3-4 other tables. It took over 15min for someone to come and take our drink order. Then it took another 10min for someone to come take our food order (and thats because I waved them down). Overall, we were there for an hour and a half, half of that was waiting on servers to come to us. Most annoying part is as we were sitting there waiting each time, the one(?) server would constantly stop and chat with "regulars" for a long time. They always got the best service, their food came out first, and we were otherwise forgotten about unless we waved someone down. read more

This beautiful gem of a restaurant is superb! The restaurant itself is tastefully decorated and comfortable. I especially love the glass wall with the bamboo design on it in the bar area. They have fabulous friendly customer service, and the food is fresh and delicious in addition to being very reasonably priced. My boyfriend had the waterfall beef salad which was excellent. I had the sweet and sour shrimp. It was served in a bowl made from wonton skins and was absolutely stuffed with delicious grilled shrimp and served with a generous portion of white rice. We have had their sushi before and it is also fresh and delectable! Do not walk, run to this restaurant! You won't be sorry!! Five stars all the way!! read more

Food: Had tomyum soup, crab roll, and my husband had the ultimate asparagus. I also had the hurricane and mango sticky rice for dessert. Tomyum soup was a little too sweet for me. I would have preferred the more authentic spicy and sour tomyum soup. But overall not bad. My tomyum soup had rice noodles cabbage, mushrooms and pork. And glorious cilantro. My husband's ultimate asparagus looked wonderful. Meat tasted good and asparagus was well cooked. My husband said he expected more flavour out of this dish- a little nland for him. That said he was comparing with his idea of a Thai dish with lots of flavour like in Thailand. Crab roll is wonderful as always. Hurricane was delicious for me. And well presented with a slice of lemon and cherry with a little umbrella. Mango sticky rice: Delicious taste was wonderful. The presentation I felt was a little lacking. We came to this place for a first time and it was so delicious! Wish we would've taken photos but got too excited to eat. We got the fresh spring rolls for an appetizer. For the entrees, I got the Pad Thai w/spice lvl 3 and my partner got the Pa-Nang Curry w/spice lvl 5. Everything was amazing and we finished all of it! I know some on here might say that the servers were asking if they were ready more than once, but I just feel like they're eager to take our orders, we never took it negatively! And once we told our server we weren't ready, he gave us plenty of time til we were. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place if you're looking for some good and flavorful food! Thai food review only. We didn't order any sushi items. I once believed that Thai food was the hardest to mess up. Nearly every Thai place we went to in San Diego was always decent, even if not great. I was warned Thai food isn't good in Oside, but I figured there are so many to choose from, one of them has to be good. Tonight the search continues after yet another disappointment. The crab fried rice is stringy. The drunken noodles were a broken, clumpy mess, mixed with chunks of chewy beef. The garlic chicken was very dry, and the best part of the meal was the steamed broccoli and cabbage that came in the garlic chicken. Fantastic dinner, first time here. I took my date out for early Valentine's dinner. We sat near the bar. We ordered the combo tempura. The "popsicle" roll which is not on the menu but my date had ordered it before. And another roll with salmon, crab meat, and more. Warm sake! And shared a large beer. I've lived in Oside for many years now (long enough for my residency to graduate from high school at this point). I ate at Cafe de Thai and Sushi long long ago and the food was good. Not super memorable but was good. I didn't go back until last night to be honest mainly because there are so many food options in Oside now to choose from that I really go back to the ones that stand out. For Friday Night Dinner, my daughter wanted "Asian" food. Hey...they have two different Asian countries in one restaurant here so why not??? Hmmm... Well I can tell you that I LURVES me some pad Thai so that is always my go to. We took my fiancé that has never had Thai food before and I talked him into getting the shrimp pad Thai. My daughter got the Japanese ramen. Oh Loooordt. What did we do that for. My wonderful, loving fiancé no longer trusts me and now our future is hanging in the balance haha! My daughter was super hungry, so we ordered an appetizer so that we wouldn't have to wait TOO long to get something to eat. It took quite some time for us to get our food. I understand most restaurants nowadays are low on staffing so that's ok. I expect it now and totally get it. After quite some time (I hesitate in saying exactly how long because I only have a close estimate and not an exact time so I don't want to seem dishonest) our food came out. I asked what happened to the appetizer and she said it was taking longer. Isn't that the point of the appetizer to come out first unless it's ordered AS your main dish? I explained how we expected to get the appetizer first and she probably should have explained that it would take longer so that we could have ordered accordingly. Nope. She still wasn't getting it. That's ok no big deal. Now as I said before, I LOVE pad Thai. This pad Thai? A travesty. The chicken was so dried out it was like leather and inedible. I'm not sure WHAT happened with the sauce, but it tasted like they added ketchup. I said nothing to my fiancé and looked for his expression. You could see it in his face as he chewed repeatedly on his rubbery shrimp and smiled that he was questioning his life decisions and thinking of a nice, gentle way to ask me for the ring back now that all trust was gone. My daughter's food was ok. Just ok. So now the dessert. Maybe there was redemption in sticky, sweet mango rice? The mango slices were hard. Like as in totally unripe hard and the rice...I felt like I was going to lose a tooth with how hard some of the kernels were. At that point I was done. I asked for boxes and when I got home started to question MY life choices as in why I thought it would be any better the next day. I dumped it all in the trash. I would have honestly have given only 1 star but my daughters food wasn't horrible. I've been to Cafe de Thai & Sushi a handful of times specifically during the lunch hours as there's not that many Thai options around the area. For lunch you get a soup (miso or coconut), salad, and entree with a veggie egg roll and a slice of orange. I usually get the coconut soup. It's a Thai style soup and is creamy with a little sour taste. Inside you'll find some green onions and mushrooms. The salad is just okay. It's one of those mass produced salads that looks like it comes from a bag. However, I like their dressing - it's a sweet sesame/peanut dressing. For the entrees, I've tried the pad see ew, yellow curry, and pad thai. All the entrees come with your selection of protein. My go to is the pad thai. It comes with a few slices of tofu and your protein. It tastes like regular pad thai - kinda tangy, sweet, sour, and salty. The pad see ew is also very good and has a sweet soy flavor to go with. The yellow curry is also good however, the potatoes were a little too hard for my taste. In addition to the entree, you get a veggie egg roll and a slice of orange. The veggie roll seems like it's prepackaged as some parts of the inside of the egg roll was soggy although the outside was crispy. All in all, Cafe de Thai and sushi is a good lunch place. With the lack of asian food in the area, Thai and sushi isn't a bad place for the area if you're craving Thai food. read more

The restaurant was not full, but the sushi bar area was packed. There were maybe 4 tables with people in the main restaurant. We ordered: spicy garlic edamame (tasty) lemon drop sushi roll (very small pieces of salmon on top) Ni-na roll (had to repeatedly ask for it & finally tried to cancel it because we were finished w/dinner, but they were just bringing it out) Pad Thai noodles (taste was ok) Teriyaki chicken (lot of veggies, very little chicken that was too chewy) Green curry (nicely spiced & tasty) Sizzling pepper beef (meat too tough) Mixed tempura (no green beans, lots of kombucha, asparagus & broccoli .. all was slightly over-browned) Asked to leave out green onions for the miso soup, but they still added green onions). Service was pretty bad - had to ask multiple times for big plates & they were lax in keeping water glasses full. Used to be a great place to eat, but don't think we'll be back. The restaurant is next door to a pizza place. Doesn't look like much from the street but has a lot of space inside. Dining area and sushi bar. We happen to be there for happy hour. Had some appetizers, beer and wine. Ordered and food came out pretty quick. Very tasty. Good size portions. Service was great. Olivia was our server and she was great. Very upbeat. She Alda is she would see us soon when we were leaving. That was a genuinely nice thing to say. Definitely will be back again for lunch on the weekend. Menu looks really good.
