Such a nice cozy brunch spot! Very busy but they handle the table turnovers well so the wait isn't too long. The service was really nice and friendly and they were on top of their game. The food came out fast enough and it's all a big portion. Everything tasted good but not great unfortunately, and my table found ourselves adding salt and pepper a lot throughout the meal. I got the veggie skillet and it just tasted like unseasoned hashbrowns with barely boiled vegetables on top and then eggs on top of that. Didn't really get the skillet part so i would recommend ordering something else. The pancakes were really good without being overly sweet too. We got customized sides and didn't even get upcharged for them! And the server did a good job of splitting the bills without too much trouble. I could not believe that I haven't been to this spot until recently! I used to pass by a lot, but never decided to go in until this past weekend. I came here today with a party of 6. When we first walked in I was concerned we'd have a long wait because the place was hopping! Once we saw there was a back area for larger tables I was relieved. They have fresh squeezed OJ that was so tasty- a deep orange color - not light yellow and not watered down. They must use really good oranges. The food was delicious and they had a lot of choices. Ok, first of all. Get a booth, they can be moved enough to accommodate most larger people. If you dare you can sit at one of the tables but I strongly suggest the bar or a booth if you don't want to have a sore arse by the end of your dining. Cafe 14, REPLACE THESE CHAIRS! Each chair is worth $40,000 a month if you run the tables at full turnover. I never see the tables busy because, the seating sucks. Bar seats nice soft and good place to chill talk some business and politics with the folks and chew. Booths nice soft place to chill and eat. Tables? Let's eat and run. (After paying) If this is how you increase turnover you're doing it wrong. Making it so uncomfortable people will never return to the tables is bad. It restricts us in areas usable of the restaurant. Replace The Chairs These things are original to the restaurant I think! Bathrooms are impressively clean (I'm female so didn't check the men's room) The food is as usual the classic Cafe 14 originals The new coffee selection is impressive, lavender honey mocha, yummy. Not strong like usual coffees, extremely smooth and flavorful, hints of the coffee bean are well hidden behind the smoothing honey and milk along with the lavender essence. Definitely a good drink and at this price be prepared to drink two of them as they're economical tasty and come in tons of flavors to experiment with. The crepes require some assembly, and extra asking for ingredients that used to be standard. These things used to come with a gravy boat of whip cream on the side. And often they'd serve it with whip cream across each piece. Now you have to ask for it, but it's still offered. Yum! They probably would done it my way if someone I know was working the kitchen but this is a weekday mid day and we usually hit afternoon or early morning. Hitting for lunch is unusual. So them not having "the usual" for me is excused. Replace the bloody chairs. Then we talk five stars. read more

I got the Southwest Skillet, which comes with avocado, bacon, onion, peppers as well as your choice of either 2 pancakes or toast on the side (i got the pancakes). I really enjoyed my meal and actually decided to save some for later despite having a large appetite because they give you just that much food :) It was also very reasonably priced! I have no complaints about service - everything arrived promptly and our server was helpful. The inside of the restaurant is well decorated with plants. Now we know why the parking lot was not full. Just overall bad experience. We were seated right away. Waited 15 minutes for the server to just come to the table, another 35 minutes for the food to arrive. The winner of dinner ordering was my 6 year old with Mac and cheese. My turkey burger was not edible, from smell, to texture and finally taste. The cream of chicken and rice soup tasted sour, minestrone taste was decent but more like a vegetable bean broth than minestrone. To be as fair as I can, they appeared short staffed, 1 maybe 2 servers, 2 cooks, bus boy, and front of house. Slim down the menu and I feel like it could be better, just stick with a short list of well executed items. Would not recommend for dinner. Their menu during the week has wonderful choices such as my favourite, marscarpone and berries pancakes. For lunch they're burgers, sandwiches, and awesome soups are especially good. I was pleasantly surprised by this lunch location. For some reason I was reluctant to stop by here since moving to the area about 10 yrs ago. My wife convinced me to give it a try the other day and I am glad I did. It is only open for breakfast/lunch hours, but I am able to order lunch anytime of the day. It has been many years since we went to Cafe Fourteen in Palatine. Since we were there, the owner retired and sold the diner to their chef. Except for weekends, they are only open for breakfast and brunch. They are open two nights a week, providing Italian Dining. The ambiance is still "diner." They have counter seating as well as tables and booths. Their menu was nice, providing ample selections for people with food allergies. (As I do.) Initially, they serve bread. There was a combination of Italian Bread and Tomato Bread. These are both off of my diet, but everyone else loved both types. For Dinner, I had Chicken Piccata, the Quinoa Bowl, Minestroni, a House Salad, and mixed vegetables. We also had wine (a white Pino Noir and a red Pinot Noir). I can't say enough about the food. It was well prepared, and it tasted great. The wines were also quite good. The servers were great, but they were a bit understaffed so our server (and the others) had trouble keeping up. Their sense of humor about it was excellent. We also understood the situation and were in no hurry. For a diner known for Breakfast and Brunch, we feel as if this was a nice choice for dinner and are ready to return. read more

My husband and I met some friends for breakfast at Cafe Fourteen. Despite the restaurant being very packed on a Sunday, our group of six were able to be seated right away. Our server was very nice and friendly. I ordered the avocado omlete with fruit and pancakes. The food was delicious. You get a lot of food for the money. The only downside was the wait. It took over twenty minutes to get our food from the time we ordered. Getting boxes and taking care of our checks also took longer than expected. This place is busy during the peak breakfast and brunch hours. You have to wait to be seated. They have a big menu and it has a good variety on it. The items are reasonably priced. In my recent visit, my family and I ordered a couple of omelets with pancakes and a kids meal of eggs overeasy with side of bacon, hash browns and pancakes. We also ordered a cup of regular coffee, pumpkin spice cold coffee that came with whipped cream and toppings and hot chocolate with whipped cream and toppings. The drinks were good. The hot chocolate was PIPING HOT. I mean it was ridiculously hot. Probably the hottest hot chocolate I have seen in a while. The mason jar was super hot and even after putting a few ice cubes in it, a lot of steam was still coming out. Wish our server would have told us how hot this hot chocolate was. The food was tasty. I liked my Greek Omelet and the accompanying pancakes. It had good flavor and was fluffy. The Sunrise Omelet had spinach, onions and sun dried tomatoes. It was nice but a bit bland for my liking. The pancakes were delicious. I like this restaurant for their good food, nice variety and reasonable prices. On certain days they are open for dinner as well. I would like to check that out sometime. I have enjoyed many dishes from Cafe 14. When I'm not feeling 100% of myself, I order a Harvest Salad, it is delightful salad with strawberries and blueberries and blue cheese, and mixed greens. The salad makes me feel myself again. The cheerful wait staff give you a feeling of being at home. Esmeralda one of the hostess's greets you, the surroundings of green plants of all kinds, as you see an assortment of cacti, and house plants I overlook in my busy day. Esmeralda is happy to share her experience and names of cacti and succulent plants and if anyone loves her plants she will let them go home with them. It's a pleasure to hear one of my friends say they bought one and with Esmeralda's help how well it's doing in their home. I love pancakes, Cafe 14's are light and fluffy, they also have gluten-free options. On Friday and Saturday nights, they are open late and change the menus to Italian food, and some other ethnic dishes. I fell in love with the chicken parmesan.
