This restaurant used to be one of my favourite... generous portions and delicious food! At my last visit I came in hungry... purposely skipping lunch, knowing my dinner would be substantial. I was sorely disappointed... I ordered their famous souvlaki dinner and instead of receiving a plate full of food, there was more "plate" visible than food. There were 2 measly potatoes, may 1/4 cup of rice, a 1/4 cup of salad and 4 tiny pieces of chicken already taken off the stick. This is NOT what I was expecting. Instead of a plate mounded with food - that EVERYONE has come to EXPECT and LOVE, I left the restaurant still hungry. The prices have not changed - I still paid the price of a "full" dinner. This is one DISAPPOINTED customer and I will think twice before returning or recommending this place to anyone. Greek Garden - you could do better.... even just increasing the portion of rice and potatoes...those dinner components are easily the least expensive and there is no excuse for your cutbacks. read more

It's not the heat, it's the humidity...the air has been so super-saturated all week it's felt like Guelph suddenly relocated to the Caribbean. Nothing to do but hide out in the air conditioning all day, venturing out to barbecue in the evening, when the moist air was cool enough to breathe without choking, but still too thick to allow mosquitoes to fly (I did see one learning the back stroke, though). Today, as I was finishing getting another perfect haircut from Kim at Malkim, the sky opened up with a mighty belch of thunder and hit the city with a bucket brigade of water. Suddenly, I felt adventurous. And hungry. Being near that end of town, I decided it was a good time to finally try out Cafe Greek Garden. I'd been meaning to for ages -- honestly -- but location and time constraints had always made the venture just not quite convenient. Today would have to be the day. After all, as president of the Garlic Fan Club, it's a given that I love good Greek food. (Someday I'll write a fitting tribute to Vasili's Greek Restaurant in Santa Cruz, with the terrific souvlaki and the wonderful garlicky skordalia and tzatziki, and Vasili himself, who would occasionally dance with a table in his teeth, and fill up a pot of chicken-garlic soup for me whenever I had a cold.) First, the decor. Elaborate frescoes in conjunction with both fake plants (which I hate) and some very healthy real ones (which I love) did, in fact, give the place a garden feel -- and the outdoor seating, while overlooking a quasi-industrial area and a busy road, looked comfortable and inviting...but very very wet. I opted for indoors and dry. The hostess greeted me with a no-nonsense manner and a heavy Greek accent. Promising! Even more promising when I heard Greek being spoken in the open kitchen, and when someone turned up the music, which was Greek, with traditional folk instruments (which I love -- I cannot stand Muzak'd synthetic "ethnic"-flavored pap). And even better when I heard someone dancing back there. Hurray, authentic! For a starter, I ordered the dolmadakia, the meat version of dolmades -- grape leaves stuffed with rice, lemon juice, olive oil, and spices; dolmades are one of my favorite finger-foods. The dolmadakia were a different beast -- more like meatballs wrapped in grape leaves, and served hot with copious amounts of an unappealing gelid pale translucent gravy-like substance. It wasn't bad, but could have used more garlic and definitely more lemon. I think I'll go for the skordalia (a potato and garlic dip, heavy on the garlic -- did I mention I love garlic?) next time. I don't know if it came as part of the dolmadakia, or is simply served with every meal, but I was also given bread with two dollops of dip: one beige, one pale pink. The pale pink one tasted vaguely of mayonnaise; I decided I didn't like it (it had that "church picnic" flavor), and moved on to the beige dip, which I had correctly surmised was hummus. Good hummus! Plenty of garlic and lemon to complement the chickpeas. Betcha it was homemade. It certainly tasted it. Now I'm a big fan of good souvlaki. I had some options, here: chicken, pork or lamb, and either on a skewer with Greek salad, roast potatoes, rice and tzatziki sauce (that's a lotta starch for me, boyo), or in a pita (served with their "famous Greek salad"). I opted for the latter, in lamb (more traditional, and my favorite red meat). While I'd been willing to be pleased with the dolmadakia, I had no trouble falling -- hard -- for the souvlaki. Yowza! The thick-cut lamb was so succulent and tender I was able to bite through it in a single bite with my incisors alone, and it was flawlessly flavored, with a delicious hint of char. (I must beg them for their secret! I've never had such tender lamb!) They kept the pita fillings simple: generous amounts of delicious tender meat, sliced tomatoes, and some truly excellent tzatziki (for the uninitiated: a creamy tart garlicky sauce made with Greek yogurt, lemon, shredded cucumbers and tons of garlic). The Greek salad was plentiful, and while it was made with iceberg lettuce (which I find worthless), and only had one Kalamata olive and a couple of tomato slices, it did have a generous heap of feta cheese on top. Having filled up on the dolmadakia, I abandoned the salad, after eating the tomatoes with the feta and the single olive. But I sopped up every drip of that tzatziki, and licked my fingers for good measure. I can see this place being terrific for large groups of friends, ordering the saganaki (read: flaming cheese -- totally awesome) and yelling OPA! when the mushroom-cloud of greasy flames launches from the skillet, drinking too much ouzo and staying out too late. (*Sigh.* I wish I could get my friends together for such an evening, here. Truth is, we aren't let off the leash that often. Maybe I can sneak away and borrow some friends from His Goatness.) Final bonus: ouzo candy came with the bill. And all of that food was only $16. read more

I came here for the first time with my family and we really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. We came for dinner on a Tuesday, so it was relatively empty, but apparently, they can get pretty busy at lunch time. We started with the seafood platter, which was AMAZING. Extremely generous portions with perfectly fried calamari and an assortment of pita and dips. The hummus was my favourite. It was a little more garlicky than what I'm normally used it, but as a garlic fan, I really enjoyed it. For mains, we tried the lamb chops, halibut and pork tenderloin. I found the halibut to be slightly overlooked and dry, but the lamb chops and pork tenderloin were both delicious and we have no complaints. Service was quick and the staff were very friendly. The waitress cheerfully answered all of our curious questions (what's this? what's that?). Definitely a great family restaurant! read more

The food is pretty good here, however overall I will say the place has its ups and downs. In terms of decor, I will say the patio is very nice with the billowy curtains. When it comes to the food I liked the bruschetta and the rice, potatoes and obviously the tzatziki. I had a lamb skewer and although the meat was well flavoured, it was kind of tough which ruined it alittle. Finally, the service was fairly slow even though the restaurant wasn't busy. Our waitress asked us if we wanted a refill on water and then never brought it. I would say I would go back to try more things if I'm craving Greek food, but I would say the restaurant is average everything considered. read more

Not impressed with this restaurant. Came for a birthday for first time recently on a week day. My husband and I both had the pork souvlaki. How can you go wrong right...The Greek Salad was soggy and the feta tasted off. Neither of us could eat it. The pork souvlaki was dry but tasted ok but the rice seemed like it had been sitting and was dried out and hard. The potatoes and tzatziki were quite good though. So points for that. This place has gone WAYYYY downhill. I used to love it here years ago. The past 2 times I have gone, I came home feeling very sick. I had to run to the bathroom! The service has gone down hill and it is so dirty in there. There were flies buzzing around our heads and landing on the food. As a Greek, this place really impressed me with its authentic home cooking. We ordered the Tiropitakia which I could have sworn were cooked by my mother herself - high praise. I've been going the this cafe for many years, I used to live in the Guelph area, but never ate there, till someone suggested it, a friend from Georgetown. I've been hooked since the early 90's I now take a few friends from the GTA out to Guelph and we always dine at the Greek Garden. I love their moussaka, one friend always goes for the stuffed chicken. The decor has improved over the years, it was always a blue and white grecian feel, it's now switched up and it has a warmer feel about it. read more

Food is good. Good flavours, authentic, many hand made options, and good quality meats. Lots of options to choose from and it is easy to find something for everyone on their menu. Prices and portions are good. The service is seriously lacking. It is not an overly friendly place and it is very slow. Avoid a table anywhere near the take out area. Ordered our 20th wedding anniversary dinner May 23, 2020 to take out since dining in is not an option at this time. Unfortunately this was one of the worst meals I've eaten from a restaurant in a long time. My husbands rack of ribs was fatty and the rice and potato dry and tasteless. I ordered the chicken Santorini and it was so terrible I threw the majority of it out. The chicken was dry, the asparagus so overcooked you couldn't pick it up. The shrimp was canned baby shrimp which is disgusting and my side greek salad with no onions actually had no onions, but also came without salad dressing! It was a waste of $56 and the tip I gave them, expecting a good meal. I will not return to dine in or take out and do not recommend this restaurant to anyone! read more

I went here with some friends we had to wait for 5 mins before someone saw us then we were told to seat ourselves and someone would be with us shortly. After 20 mins I got the menus myself and, when we were finally served the salad was brown the food was tasteless and we were served stale toasted pita bread. When the waitress asked how are food was we told her and her reply was "sorry to hear about that, that sucks". We spent over 40 dollars on a meal that no one ate. I will never go back again!!! This was a nice little find for a first outing in Guelph! I love Greek food, LOVE IT! So, I always have a lot to compare new Greek finds to (including some home cooked real authentic personal outings). This will be my new comparison point, many of the items on the menu are homemade and authentic Greek food (not just the regular pita and lamb that all Greek places serve). We started off with calamari; a light breading on succulent pieces of squid, large portion that was packed with flavor. For my main I ordered the seafood platter and was overwhelmed with ocean critters on my plate. I love seafood and was overjoyed to see that so many varieties of fish were offered at such a reasonable (under 20.00) price. The service was great, the waitress was friendly and quick. She was really familiar with the menu and ready to answer questions, with some personal suggestions for a great meal. I will be back, this was just too good to stay away from! read more

The food was good once it got to our table 1 hour after arrival. We were lied to about why the seafood linguine did not have scallops in it. We were told they ran out then when we said that was our deciding factor for choosing that dish scallops appeared. I hate being lied to especially when you pay for it. One of the best kept secrets in Guelph! Great quite little place, very friendly. We went with a group of 8 for one of my friend's birthday, had a reservation, good thing too. It was on a Saturday night so it was kind of busy. I ordered the flaming cheese (highly recommend!) they bring it to your table pour alcohol on it, it creates a huge flame and they say OPA! I also had a lamb slovaki, which came with a Greek salad and potatoes. The portion sizes were fairly big, some of the females at our table could not finish there orders. 2 of the smaller females were able to order off the kids menu they were very kind for allowing that. Very good quality food. The atmosphere was very calm had some background music playing. The service was ok for a group of 8 I felt the waiter could have checked up on us a few more times from the time we got our food. The best thing about the restaurant is if you are a UofG student like us the restaurant does take student meal plan. I came here for the first time for my friend's birthday and my experience overall was good. Firstly, the atmosphere is amazing; the lighting, the colouring and stone walls - a true Greek feel. The atmosphere was a large factor in making up for the unfriendly service. While getting us seated took a while, the waitress was very impatient and not pleasant. I felt like I couldn't ask a question without her getting visibility annoyed and she was not helpful when it came to clarifying menu items. The food came quickly was delicious! The presentation and taste was truly authentic to Greek cuisine, and the portions were generous. While my opinion of the service was pretty low, the waitress did gain points for remembering it was my friend's birthday and brought out a delicious cake slice - on the house. All in all, the atmosphere and food is fantastic but the service definitely needs improvement. read more
