Stopped here for an early lunch while visiting this past weekend. My vegan friend suggested from her research and the four of us were all very happy with our experience. To start, the coffee was amazing. I chose the Cafe con Leche and wanted to dive into it was so good. Adorable, artsy and kind of a lo Fi casual feel to this Cafe. After much thought ( lots of great sandwich options here!) I decided on the full Cuban sandwich with the Cafe salad. Both were great. I did opt to no tomato on sandwich which they forgot and added anyhow, it tasted good so I let it go. I probably would ask for light mayo if I ordered again- not a big mayo fan I'll make exceptions for some sandwiches- this one was heavy! Overall, really liked the sandwich, the Cuban bread so fresh and amazing! Side salad was pretty standard, but again fresh and tasty. My veggie friends did the VGT and raved about ( vegan bacon) and the roasted garlic potato soup which the devoured. Great meal and a decent value. Order at the counter and they'll bring out. Bathroom is unisex and literally has no door with commode facing entry way! Edgy! Lol....so you might be advised to go beforehand! Would definitely eat here again. read more

I'm going go go ahead and bump them up to four stars for one specific reason: the VLT. It is quite possibly the best sandwich I've ever eaten. It's so simple, but so darn good. I also love the selection of Kaleisia teas. Sure, there's the hipstery vibe but the staff is generally friendly. I haven't been back for brunch but I'll be back for the VLT. Like a beacon in the night, a diamond in the rough, there's Cafe Hey! Located along a desolate, industrial feeling strip, you'd never expect to find this hip, vegan-friendly cafe. Somehow they hit the vibe just right, a little crunchy, a little trendy, a lot relaxed, and a way lot good food. We stopped in for breakfast while in town for a wedding with two vegans, a vegetarian, an omnivore and a baby in tow- not the easiest crowd I'm sure. We found a perfect spot for a small group near the window and were super impressed with the menu. If you can bring a friend or two and share dishes I'd recommend it, there's just so much great stuff! I've been to Cafe Hey a few times now and have always pleased. The service is prompt and the coffee is good. On my most recent visit I finally had lunch there and ordered the Ham and Swiss sandwich. The sandwich was great with plenty of meet and cheese and on great Cuban bread. My only request next time would be to go a bit lighter on the maple Dijon sauce - it was yum - but I am not a heavy sauce person. The place is a bit small so seating can be limited depending on when you go but other then that it's a great place to frequent just north of downtown Tampa. read more

I was so impressed with this restuarant, it was sooo good. My boyfriend and I are new to the vegetarian world and this place is now our favorite place to go. The flavors are outstanding and our waiter was very kind and knowledgeable of the menu. You must try the jamming burger and there vegan cheese steak. read more

Its Ok. Not great. Its cool to have an Indie theme and alternative foods..but very limited vegan menu and my wife got food poisoning off the vegan mac and cheese. She only ate half before she said she just couldn't force any more in...the taste apparently was horrendous and actually was ill all day from it. My pressed nova sandwich was good at first then the taste of old salmon kept in my mouth throughout the day. Not sure if it was just old or not. Last note is this: if you claim to be all Eco friendly and green, why not use organic everything? Coffee is not organic. The only reason why they got 3 stars from me is because i like their concept, and at least they are trying. read more

Meh, not much to say. Not horrible but nothing worth returning for either. I had the half rebel turkey sandwich and a side of the quinoa salad. The best thing about the sandwich is that its served on la segunda's Cuban bread, but that's about it. The quinoa was lacking flavor and $10 later I left hungry. read more

Cafe Hey is a small hip cafe in the seedy outskirts of downtown Tampa. The cafe is decorated with a bright red door, brick walls, a bright red air duct, and strange art such as a brightly colored painting with a dismembered doll. The art is usually for sale. The cafe offers many vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. You can choose to create your own sandwich or choose from a list of sandwiches. During lunch, I like to order the sandwich and soup combo, which is around nine dollars (tax and tip included). The ingredients are fresh and plentiful, and the soup of the day is always good. This is one of my favorite places in Tampa to relax, study, do research, and hold small forums. With our lecture series and forums, for nearly two years, we used Cafe Hey as the exclusive location. The staff and owner were always great, friendly, professional. We packed the cafe one to tow night a month. The food is truly wonderful, and I see why they have been rated and the top coffee in Tampa to eat at. My favorite in the A-Z Sandwich, and all the goodness it's packed with. It's a sandwich with pressed Cuban bread, turkey, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and American cheese. All of the food is fresh and/or organic and prepared well. The daily special is always special and is not always on the every day menu, so if you like little surprises show up daily and get their special. The only thing you might see as an issue in the pricing of some items, I go for the experience, atmosphere, and the good food, and am willing to pay just whatever to put in front of me because I enjoy it that much. Some of use are more frugal than others so understand there is no $.99 menu, but everything you get is fresh, organic, and enjoyable. I strongly recommend Cafe Hey to everyone living in or visiting Tampa. Buen Provecho! read more

This cute shanty little café is nestled quietly on the outskirts of downtown. Don't let it's "hole in the wall" deceive you, they're delicious made-to-order sandwiches have that home made feel, along with the local bread (which is the best I've had in a long time). And you can't complain that they serve beer! It's a nice little twist to your sandwich café. read more

Neat little place. I thought the cuban sandwich was a nice variation - fresh and hot and a little different than your regular cuban - and it was pretty darn big, in my opinion. If I hadn't split it with someone I'd have taken half of it home. The banana nut bread was good as well. Wouldn't have normally stopped by but I was there already for an event. This place has a lot of age to it. I don't mean age from people but age look from the condition of inside. This place is not for everyone and you have to maintain a very open mind when coming inside. The food was delicious and the prices were very well maintained. I can appreciate that. I also appreciate the pitcher of water for people less fortune who walk by and would like a free cup of water to quench their thirst. I admire that and appreciate that even more. This is a cool little shop in downtown Tampa that serves up quality sandwiches to complement its extensive coffee and tea menu. I had the Turkey in the Grass on Cuban bread. The sandwich comes with turkey, cream cheese, watercress, cucumbers and balsamic. I really liked the combination of flavors on this one and it was nearly as rich as my boyfriend's Cuban (rich, but quite delicious!). With numerous flavors of coffee, I had to sample one of the Cafe Hey recommendations and went with the Almond Joy, which tasted good but almost bordered on too sweet and would have made a better dessert than coffee to go with my meal. The place is a bit on the smaller side, but I had no trouble getting a table for two at lunchtime on a Sunday. I can see how it could get really crowded in there, especially since there are board games available to play. And, yes, the food comes out a little on the slower side but I think it's worth it. Also, this place is open on Sundays - certainly a plus in downtown Tampa. read more

I love the VLT sandwiches on their menu, all the vegetarian / vegan sandwiches are great. I work nearby near Ybor City and when I'm feeling like a sandwich I find myself going to Cafe Hey. Their hours are random (open until 3-4pm on Weekdays except Thursday), Thursday is their open-mic night and It's a very eclectic experience listening to the local music artists and poets. This is an indie cafe and It's not a normal cafe shop, It feels very 'hip' and it's a very unique cafe near the heart of Downtown Tampa / Edge of Ybor City. I like the random soups (a lot of vegan options) and kale salads. My two biggest knocks are the lack of seating (there's only a few tables and bar stools) and the limited menu options. I find myself only coming here for VLT and soups, I'm sure there are options on the menu that are great I've yet to find them though .. maybe someone can recommend something? read more

I first discovered Cafe Hey at a creative Loafing beer fest. They were the lone vegetarian option. Major props for their pressed VLT (vegetarian version of a BLT). We have since stopped into their shop in the transitional, outer edge of downtown 3 times now (twice this weekend alone as they were the only lunch option for us at the nearby woodworking class). I admittedly have only tried the VLT, but I do enjoy it. My boyfriend is very particular about his Cubans. So he usually gets the turkey with avocado, which he enjoys. Today he did get the Cuban. He said it was good but not his favorite ever. Wait time is on the slow side (made fresh)- be prepared. And they were unfortunately out of cookies both times today. So sad. I definitely need to branch out and explore their menu on our next visit. read more

Just came back from lunch at Cafe Hey. I'm always looking for new places to explore in Tampa, and this one had just been recommended to me as a low key lunch place. It is on the corner of Franklin and Kay, with parking out front or under the over pass. The cafe is small with 5-6 small tables and a couple of pub tables down the hall. It is really more of a dive than a cafe-- i mean that in a good way-- an unassuming mix of tasty real food in an organic, grungy-hip setting. The art changes every couple of weeks. The current exhibit is kitchy portrait photos of Tampa's own Derby Darlins roller derby team (gonna check that out too). The menu offers breakfast --eggs and oatmeal--and lunch selections like shredded kale salad, sandwiches like "Turkey in the Grass"-- turkey, cream cheese, cucumber, watercress and basaltic vinegar on toasted fresh (local) cuban, and the "Ham and Pickle" -- ham, sharp white cheddar, pickles, lettuce, and spicy, garlic chutney. Delicious, simple, clean flavors-- totally satisfying. Ate an awesome chocolate latte cookie still warm from the oven. Washed it all down with iced green tea and my daughter had bottle lemonade. We ate for @$15. By the time we left the place was bustling with college students, local business people and devoted regulars. Thursday nights is open mic night-- I will definitely go back. The only reason I did not give Cafe Hey 5 stars was because the people behind the counter were a pretty brusque (but not rude). A sincere smile would have landed a solid 5 stars. read more

There are so many things about Cafe Hey to love ... the vibe, the type of people, the food - Lots of vegan/vegetarian options, and, seriously, I don't know what it is about their oatmeal but I've been known to drive from Downtown Clearwater to Downtown Tampa just for a bowl of their oatmeal! I only wish Cafe Hey were closer, like in Seminole Heights, then it would be perfect. We need more places like Cafe Hey in the area. Although I've only been a handful of times, each time I've always enjoyed myself at this cozy little spot - plus, free wireless! It's a great place to catch a quick meal, or catch up with friends. Last time I was there they were having a movie screening, which was pretty awesome. Be forewarned: It's tiny, so it's not the best place to bring over a large group of friends. Hey Cafe - as a vegan in Tampa was a good option. I sneaked in for a meal before getting stuck at SMF for a long festival day, and decided on the VLT. As a vegan who likes more plant based foods, I was a little underwhelmed but got what I asked for. The sandwich was good, but not amazing. For me, their bread was just too much. I'm sure this is a great vegan sandwich for many people & I'm not knocking it, rather I just think I was in the mood for green things! I also had a latte with soy milk, which was amazing. The ambiance was great for me: cozy, quaint, a little offbeat and full of art. I couldn't have been happier sitting anywhere else that day. First off, I was super excited when I ran across this cute little cafe while strolling downtown. It's located on a corner lot in an area with light traffic. It's plenty of free street parking and it's a two patio sets outside of the shop. When I walked in shop was totally my style with the exposed brick wall and retro decor. The menu was diverse including vegan meals as well as gluten free options. The prices were slightly on the higher side but the food is well worth it! I had the turkey sandwich($9)which was very delicious but it didn't come with any side items. Not a single pickle, chip, fruit, nothing! The customer service wasn't great at all. I understand we all have our moments but it would have been nice to get at least one person that seemed as if they wanted to be there and actually didn't give an attitude when a question was asked.
